The vehicle is locked after the tailgate has been closed. To do this, the driver's door
must be closed and the remote control
must be outside the vehicle in the vicinity
of the tailgate.

Opening
Pull the lever and swivel the tailgate down.
The open tailgate can withstand a load of up to 250 kg, 550 lb.
Closing Swivel the tailgate up and press it closed.
Malfunction
Safetyinstructions BMW X5 M:
WARNING
Risk of trapping when folding down the
rear backrest. Danger of injury or damage to
property. Before folding down, make sure that
the movement area of the rear backrest and
the head restraint is clear.'

With an electrical fault.1.Fold the rear-seat backrest forward.2.In the lower tailgate, undo the cover by means of the on-board toolkit or a suitable
object and remove.3.Pull the loop in the direction of the interior.
The tailgate is unlocked.4.Open the upper tailgate, press the loop back in.5.Put the cover in and close.
The tailgate is locked again as soon as it is
closed.
Manualoperation Operate the unlocked tailgate manually slowly
and without a sudden movement.
Only light pressure is required to fully close the
tailgate. The actual closing operation is autoj
matic.
SoftCloseAutomatic Safetynote WARNING
Operating the doors can lead to parts of
the body becoming trapped. Danger of injury.
When opening and closing, make sure that the area of movement of the doors is free.'

Settings
Settings for the following systems and funcjtions are saved in the active profile. The extent
of settings that can be saved depends on the
country and equipment.

Profilemanagement
Callingupprofiles Independently of the remote control that is
used, another profile can be called up. This enj
ables the personal vehicle settings to be called
up, even if the vehicle was not unlocked with
the driver's own remote control.

Following functions are carried out:
'yThe settings saved in the called-up profile are made automatically.'yThe profile called up is assigned to the rej
mote control currently used.'yIf the profile has already been allocated to
another remote control, this profile applies to both remote controls.

With the guest profile, individual settings canbe made that are not saved in any of the three
personal profiles.

The guest profile cannot be renamed. It is not allocated to the current remote control.

To avoid mixing up the profiles, each profile can be given a personal name.

driver is not always possible in the following
cases, for example.
'yThe front passenger unlocks the vehicle
with their remote control, but another perj
son drives.'yThe driver unlocks the vehicle using Comj
fort Access and is carrying a number of rej
mote controls.'yIf there is a change of driver without the vej
hicle being locked and unlocked.'yIf a number of remote controls are located
in the area outside of the vehicle.

country variant.

When the vehicle is unlocked, the last set posij
tions of the driver's seat, exterior mirrors and
steering wheel are set.
Alarmsystem General The alarm system responds to the followingchanges when the vehicle is locked:
'yUnauthorised opening of a door, the bonj net or the tailgate.'yThere are movements inside the vehicle.'yThe vehicle's incline changes, for instance
if an attempt is made to jack it up and steal
the wheels or to raise it prior to towing away.'yThere is an interruption in the power supj
ply from the battery.'yImproper use of the socket for on-board dij agnosis.
The alarm system indicates these changes visj
ually and audibly:
'yAudible alarm.
Depending on local regulations, the acousj
tic alarm may be suppressed.'ySwitching on the hazard warning lights.
Switchingonandoff
At the same time as unlocking and locking the
vehicle by remote control or using the Comfort Access the alarm system is switched on andoff.

The alarm system is triggered on opening a
door if the door has been unlocked using the integrated key in the door lock.
Switch off the alarm, see page 48.

The tailgate can be opened even with the
alarm system switched on.
On closing the tailgate, it is locked again and monitored, as long as the doors are locked.
The hazard warning lights flash once.
Indicatorlampontherear-viewmirror'yIndicator lamp flashes every 2 seconds:
The alarm system is switched on.'yIndicator lamp flashes for approximately
10 seconds before it flashes every 2 secj onds:
Interior movement detector and tilt alarm
sensor are not active because doors, bonj
net or tailgate are not closed correctly.
Correctly closed access points are sej
cured.
If the access points that are still open are closed then the interior protection and tilt
alarm sensor are switched on.'yThe indicator lamp no longer illuminates after the vehicle has been unlocked:
No attempt has been made to tamper with
the vehicle.'yThe indicator lamp flashes after unlocking
until the ignition is switched on, but for no longer than approximately five minutes:
The alarm has been triggered.
Tiltalarmsensor The incline of the vehicle is monitored.
Alarm system responds, for example, when
there is an attempt to steal a wheel or when
towing away.
Interiormovementdetector
To ensure perfect functioning, the windows
and Glass Roof must be closed.
Avoidingfalsealarms
General
The tilt alarm sensor and the interior protection
may trigger an alarm without any unauthorised
activity taking place.
Possible situations for an unwanted alarm:
'yIn washing bays or car washes.'yIn two-level garages.'yDuring transport via motorail, car ferry or trailer.'yWhen there are animals in the vehicle.
The tilt alarm sensor and interior protection
can be switched off for such situations.
Switchingoffthetiltalarmsensorand
interiormovementdetector
Press the button on the remote control
again within 10 seconds, as soon as the
vehicle is locked.
The indicator lamp illuminates for approxij
mately 2 seconds and then flashes again.
The tilt alarm sensor and the interior movejment detector are switched off until the nexttime the vehicle is locked.

cessories in the area of movement of the windows.'
