Childrestraints
General
In accordance with ADR 34/02, provisions
have been made to allow installation of a child
restraint at each rear seating position.
The anchoring hooks which belong to the upjper restraining strap of the child restraint - AS1754, can be applied immediately to the relej
vant mounting.
Please refer strictly to the installation instrucj tions supplied with the child restraint system.
Each seating position is fitted with a head rest.
Safetyinstructions WARNING
Child restraint anchorages are designed
to withstand only those loads imposed by corj
rectly fitted child restraints. Under no circumj
stances are they to be used for adult seat
belts, harnesses or for attaching other items or
equipment to the vehicle. After using the child
restraints, the anchor fittings may need to be
folded down.'

DrivingVehicleequipment
This chapter describes all standard, national
and special equipment provided in the model
series. Equipment not available in the vehicle is
therefore also described, for example the sej lected special equipment or country variant.This also applies to safety-relevant functions
and systems. Comply with the relevant laws and regulations when using the corresponding
functions and systems.
Start/stopbutton
Principle The ignition is switched on or off
and the engine is started by pressing the start/stop button.
Pressing the start/stop buttonwhile the brake is pressed starts
the engine.
Ignitionon Press the start/stop button, but do not press
the brake.
All systems are operational.
Most of the indicator and warning lamps in the instrument cluster are illuminated for differentlengths of time.
To save battery power when the engine is off, switch off the ignition and any unnecessary
electronic systems.
Ignitionoff Press the start/stop button again, but do notpress the brake.
All indicator lamps in the instrument cluster exj
tinguish.To save battery power when the engine is off,
switch off the ignition and any unnecessary

Safetymeasures
When the ignition is switched off, transmission
position P will be automatically engaged, if sej lector lever position D or R is engaged.
With the vehicle stationary and the engine shut
down, the ignition is switched off automatically under the following circumstances:'yWhen locking, even with the low-beamheadlights switched on.'yShortly before the battery is discharged so
that an engine start remains possible.'yWhen opening or closing the driver's door,
if the driver's belt is unfastened and the
low-beam headlights are switched off.'yWhen the driver's belt is unfastened, if the
driver's door is opened and the low-beam headlights switched off.'yWhen opening the front doors, if there isno other person on the front seats.
After some minutes without further operation,
the low-beam headlights are changed over to side lights.
Radioreadystate
General
In the radio ready state, individual current conj
sumers remain ready for operation.
ActivatingWhen the engine is running, press the start/
stop button.
If engine is switched off and the ignition is
switched on: the system automatically actij vates radio ready state when the door is

opened if the lights are switched off or the dayjtime driving lights are switched on.
Radio ready state remains active when ignition
is switched off automatically, such as for
following reasons:'yOpening or closing driver's door.'yUnfastening driver's seat belt.'yWhen low-beam headlights are automatij cally changed to side lights.
Switchingoffautomatically
The radio ready sate is automatically switchedoff in the following situations:
'yIf the driver's or front passenger door isopened when exiting the vehicle, with the
engine stopped manually.'yIf the ignition is switched off manually with
the start/stop button.'yAfter approximately eight minutes.'yWhen locking via the central locking sysj
tem.'yShortly before the battery is discharged so
that an engine start remains possible.
Enginestart
Safetyinstructions DANGER
A blocked exhaust pipe or inadequate
ventilation can allow harmful exhaust fumes to
penetrate the vehicle. The exhaust fumes conj
tain pollutants which are colourless and odourj
less. In enclosed spaces, the exhaust fumes can also build up outside the vehicle. Danger of
fatal injury. Keep the exhaust pipe clear and
ensure sufficient ventilation.'

Risk of accident or injury. Do not leave children
or animals unsupervised in the vehicle. When leaving the vehicle, take the remote control
with you and lock the vehicle.'

Enginestart
For driving off, the engine automatically startsunder the following conditions:
'yWith activated Automatic Hold: press theaccelerator pedal.
After starting the engine, accelerate as normal.
Safetyfunction After an automatic shut down, the engine willnot restart automatically if one of the following
conditions is satisfied:
'yDriver's seat belt unbuckled and driver's
door open.'yBonnet has been unlocked.
Several indicator lamps illuminate for various
lengths of time.
The engine can only be started using the start/ stop button.
Restrictionsofthefunction
Even if you do not want to drive off, the engine
restarts automatically in the following situaj tions:
'yVery high temperature in the interior, if thecooling function is switched on.'yThe driver applies lock to the steeringwheel.'yShift from selector lever position D to N, R
or D/S.'yPress the accelerator and the brake at the
same time.'yCondensation when the automatic air conj ditioning is switched on.'yVehicle battery is heavily discharged.'yVery low temperature in the interior, if the
heating is switched on.
Preventingautomaticenginestop
Principle To enable the vehicle to move off particularly
swiftly, for example at a junction, the automatic
engine stop can be actively prevented.
Preventingautomaticenginestop
usingthebrakepedal
The engine stop can be actively prevented
within a second of the vehicle coming to a
standstill:
'yPress the brake pedal down firmly as soon as the vehicle has come to a standstill.'yThen immediately brake again with normalbraking force.

During an automatic engine stop, the enjgine is started.
The engine can be started or stopped only by means of the start/stop button.'yLED goes out: Auto Start Stop function isactivated.
Parkingthevehicleduringautomatic

With automatic engine stop, the vehicle can be
parked safely, for example in order to leave it.
1.Press the start/stop button. The ignition is
switched off. The Auto Start Stop function
is deactivated.
Selector lever position P is automatically
engaged.2.Apply the parking brake.
Start engine as usual, using the start/stop butj
ton.
Automaticdeactivation
In certain situations the Auto Start Stop funcj tion is deactivated automatically for safety'ssake, for example if the absence of the driver isdetected.
Malfunction
The Auto Start Stop function no longer shuts down the engine automatically. A Check Conj trol message is shown. It is possible to keepdriving. Have the system checked by a ServicePartner of the manufacturer or another qualijfied Service Partner or a specialist workshop.
Parkingbrake PrincipleThe parking brake is used to prevent the vehij
cle from rolling when it is parked.
Safetyinstructions
WARNING
An unsecured vehicle can start moving
and rolling away. Danger of accidents. Before
leaving the vehicle, secure it to prevent rolling away.
Observe the following to ensure that the vehij cle is secured against rolling away:'yApply the parking brake.'yTurn the front wheels into the direction of
the kerb on upward or downward gradij ents.'yAdditionally secure the vehicle on upwardor downward gradients, for example using
a wedge.'

Engaging
Whenvehicleisstationary Pull switch.
LED is illuminated.
The indicator lamp illuminates red. Theparking brake is engaged.
Duringthejourney Use during the journey serves as an emerjgency brake:
Pull and hold the switch. Vehicle brakes strongly for as long as the switch is pulled.
The indicator lamp illuminates red, a
signal sounds and the brake lights illuj
minate.
A Check Control message is shown.
If the vehicle is braked to approximately
3 km/h, 2 mph, the parking brake is engaged.
Releasing
Releasingmanually1.Switch on ignition.2. Press switch with foot brake pressed.
LED and indicator lamp turn off.
Parking brake is released.
Automaticrelease Operate the accelerator pedal to automatically
release.
LED and indicator light turn off. Under the following conditions, the parking brake is automatically released by operatingthe accelerator pedal.
'yEngine on.'yDrive position engaged.'yDriver belted in and door closed.
AutomaticHold
Principle This system automatically applies and releases
the brake, for example in stop-start traffic.
The vehicle is automatically held at a standstill.On upward inclines, rolling back is prevented
when driving off.
General Under the following conditions, Automatic
Hold is automatically disabled and the parking brake is engaged:
'yThe engine is switched off.'yA door is opened when stationary and the
seat belt of the driver is unfastened.'yThe parking brake is used to brake to a standstill during the journey.
Indicator lamp changes from green to
red and the lettering AUTO H is deactij vated.
Safetyinstructions WARNING
