SymbolPossible causeThere is a flat tire or a major loss in
tire inflation pressure.
No reset was performed for the sysj tem. The system issues a warning
based on the tire inflation pressures
stored during the last reset.
Measure
Reduce your speed and stop cautiously. Avoid
sudden braking and steering maneuvers.
Actionsintheeventofaflattire
1.Identify the damaged tire.
To do this, check the air pressure in all four
tires, for instance using the tire pressure gage of a flat tire kit.
If the tire inflation pressure in all four tires
is correct, the Tire Pressure Monitor may
not have been reset. In this case, perform the reset.
If identification of flat tire damage is not possible, please contact a dealerss service
center or another qualified service center
or repair shop.2.Repair the flat tire, e.g., with a flat tire kit or
by changing the wheel.
Use of sealant, for instance from the flat tire kit, may damage the TPM wheel electronics. In
this case, have the electronics checked and rej
placed at the next opportunity.
Systemlimits
Temperature
The tire inflation pressure depends on the
tire's temperature.
Driving or exposure to the sun will increase the
tire's temperature, thus increasing the tire inj flation pressure.
The tire inflation pressure is reduced when the
tire temperature falls again.
These circumstances may cause a warning
when temperatures fall very sharply.
Suddentirepressureloss The system cannot indicate sudden serious
tire damage caused by external circumstances.
Failuretoperformareset
The system does not function properly if a rej
set has not been carried out, for instance a flat
tire is reported though tire inflation pressures
are correct.
Malfunction The yellow warning light flashes and is
then illuminated continuously. A Check
Control message is displayed. It may
not be possible to identify tire pressure losses.
Examples and recommendations in the followj
ing situations:'yA wheel without TPM wheel electronics,
for instance an emergency wheel, is
mounted: have it checked by a dealerss
service center or another qualified service
center or repair shop as needed.'yMalfunction: have system checked by a
dealerss service center or another qualified service center or repair shop.'yThe system was unable to complete the
reset. Perform a system reset again.'yInterference caused by systems or devices
with the same radio frequency: after leavj
ing the area of the interference, the system automatically becomes active again.

System
Each tire, including the spare (if provided)should be checked monthly when cold and injflated to the inflation pressure recommendedby the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicleplacard or tire inflation pressure label. (If your

vehicle has tires of a different size than the sizeindicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation
pressure label, you should determine the
proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.)
As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring
system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire presj
sure telltale when one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when
the low tire pressure telltale illuminates, you
should stop and check your tires as soon as
possible, and inflate them to the proper presj
sure. Driving on a significantly under-inflated
tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to
tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efj ficiency and tire tread life, and may affect the
vehicle's handling and stopping ability. Please
note that the TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire maintenance, and it is the driver's
responsibility to maintain correct tire pressure,
even if under-inflation has not reached the
level to trigger illumination of the TPMS low
tire pressure telltale. Your vehicle has also
been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indij
cator to indicate when the system is not operj
ating properly. The TPMS malfunction indicaj
tor is combined with the low tire pressure
telltale. When the system detects a malfuncj
tion, the telltale will flash for approximately one
minute and then remain continuously illumij
nated. This sequence will continue upon subj
sequent vehicle start-ups as long as the malj
function exists. When the malfunction indicator
is illuminated, the system may not be able to
detect or signal low tire pressure as intended.
TPMS malfunctions may occur for a variety of
reasons, including the installation of replacej
ment or alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle
that prevent the TPMS from functioning propj
erly. Always check the TPMS malfunction tellj
tale after replacing one or more tires or wheels
on your vehicle to ensure that the replacement
or alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS
to continue to function properly.FTMFlatTireMonitor
Concept
The system detects tire inflation pressure loss
on the basis of rotation speed differences bej
tween the individual wheels while driving.
In the event of a tire inflation pressure loss, the
diameter and therefore the rotational speed of
the corresponding wheel changes. The differj
ence will be detected and reported as a flat
tire.
The system does not measure the actual inflaj
tion pressure in the tires.
Functionalrequirements
The following conditions must be met for the
system; otherwise, reliable flagging of a loss of tire inflation pressure is not assured:'yAfter a tire or wheel replacement, an initialj
ization was performed with the correct tire
inflation pressure.'yAfter the tire inflation pressure was adj
justed to a new value, an initialization was performed.
Statusdisplay
The current status of the flat tire monitor canbe displayed, for instance whether the RPA isactive.
Using iDrive:
1."Vehicle info"2."Vehicle status"3. "Flat Tire Monitor (FTM)"
The status is displayed.
Initializationrequired
An initialization must be performed in the folj lowing situations:
'yAfter the tire inflation pressure has been
adjusted.'yAfter a tire or wheel replacement.Seite 122ControlsSafety122

Performinginitialization
When initializing, the set tire inflation presj sures serve as reference values in order to dej
tect a flat tire. Initialization is started by conj
firming the tire inflation pressures.
Do not initialize the system when driving with
snow chains.
Using iDrive:1."Vehicle info"2."Vehicle status"3. "Perform reset"4.Start the engine but do not drive off.5.Start the initialization with "Perform reset".6.Drive away.
The initialization is completed while driving, which can be interrupted at any time.
The initialization automatically continues when
driving resumes.

Warningwithbrakingfunction
Display
A warning symbol appears in the instrument
cluster and in the Head-up Display if a collision with a detected vehicle is imminent.SymbolMeasureSymbol lights up red: prewarning.
Brake and increase distance.Symbol flashes red and an acoustic signal sounds: acute warning.
Brake and make an evasive maneuj ver, if necessary.
Prewarning
This warning is issued, e.g., when there is the impending danger of a collision or the distanceto the vehicle ahead is too small.
The driver must intervene actively when there
is a prewarning.
Acutewarningwithbrakingfunction
Acute warning is displayed in case of the immij nent danger of a collision when the vehicle apj
proaches another object at a high differential
speed.
The driver must intervene actively when there
is an acute warning. If necessary, the driver is
assisted by a minor automatic braking interj
vention in a possible risk of collision.
Acute warnings can also be triggered without
previous forewarning.
Brakingintervention
The warning prompts the driver himself/herself
to react. During a warning, the maximum brakj
ing force is used. Prerequisite for the brake
booster is sufficiently quick and hard stepping on the brake pedal. The system can assist with
some braking intervention if there is a risk of a collision. At low speeds vehicles may thus
come to a complete stop.

Detectionrange
The detection potential of the camera is limj
ited.
Thus, a warning might not be issued or be isj
sued late.
E.g., the following situations may not be dej

32 in/80 cm.
Functionallimitations
The system may not be fully functional or may
not be available in the following situations:
'yIn heavy fog, wet conditions, or snowfall.'yIn tight curves.'yIf the driving stability control systems are deactivated, for instance DSC OFF.'yIf the field of view of the camera or the
windshield are dirty or covered.'yUp to 10 seconds after the start of the enj gine via the Start/Stop button.'yDuring calibration of the camera immedijately after vehicle delivery.'yIf there are constant blinding effects bej
cause of oncoming light, for instance from
the sun low in the sky.'yWhen it is dark outside.
NightVisionwithPedestrian
andAnimalDetection
Concept
Night Vision with pedestrian and animal detecj tion is a night vision system.
An infrared camera scans the area in front of
the vehicle and issues a warning if it detects
pedestrians and animals on the street. Warm
objects that are similar in shape to human bej
ings or animals are detected by the system. If necessary, the thermal image can be displayed
on the Control Display.
Thermalimage
The image shows the heat radiated by objects in the field of view of the camera.
Warm objects have a light appearance and cold objects a dark appearance.
The ability to detect an object depends on the
temperature difference between the object
and the background and on the level of heat radiation emitted by the object. Objects that
are similar in temperature to the environment
or that radiate very little heat are difficult to dej
tect.
For safety reasons, when driving at speeds above approx. 3 mph/5 km/h and in low ambij ent light, the image is only displayed when thelow beams are switched on.
A still image is displayed at regular intervals for a fraction of a second.
