Vehicle Damage Warnings
Also, in this manual you will nd these notices:
Notice:These mean there is something
that could damage your vehicle.
A notice tells about something that can damage
the vehicle. Many times, this damage would not
be covered by your vehicle’s warranty, and it
could be costly. But the notice will tell what to
do to help avoid the damage.
When you read other manuals, you might see
CAUTION and NOTICE warnings in different
colors or in different words.
There are also warning labels on the vehicle.
They use the same words, CAUTION or NOTICE.
Vehicle Symbols
The vehicle has components and labels that use
symbols instead of text. Symbols are shown
along with the text describing the operation or
information relating to a specic component,
control, message, gage, or indicator.
If you need help guring out a specic name of
a component, gage, or indicator, reference
the following topics:

/(Remote Start):Press and release the lock
button and then press and hold the remote
start button to start the vehicle.
To start the vehicle using the remote start feature,
do the following:
1. Aim the transmitter at the vehicle.
2. Press and release the transmitter’s lock
button, then immediately press and hold
the transmitter’s remote start button until the
turn signal lights ash. If you cannot see
the vehicle’s lights, press and hold the remote
start button for at least four seconds. The
vehicle’s doors will lock. Pressing the remote
start button again after the vehicle has
started will turn off the ignition.
When the vehicle starts, the parking lamps
will turn on and remain on while the vehicle
is running.
3. If it is the rst remote start since the vehicle
has been driven, repeat these steps, while
the engine is still running, to extend the engine
running time by 10 minutes. Remote start
can be extended one time. After entering the vehicle during a remote start,
insert and turn the key to RUN to drive the vehicle.
If the vehicle is left running it will automatically
shut off after 10 minutes unless a time extension
has been done.
To manually shut off a remote start, do any of the
following:
Aim the RKE transmitter at the vehicle and
press the remote start button until the
parking lamps turn off.
Turn on the hazards warning ashers.
Turn the ignition switch on and then off.
The vehicle can be remote started two separate
times between driving sequences. The engine will
run for 10 minutes after each remote start.
Or, you can extend the engine run time by another
10 minutes within the rst 10 minute remote
start time frame, and before the engine stops.
For example, if the lock button and then the
remote start buttons are pressed again after
the vehicle has been running for ve minutes,
10 minutes are added, allowing the engine to
run for 15 minutes.

2(Headlamps):Turn the control to this
position to turn on the headlamps together
with the following lamps listed below.
When the headlamps are turned on while the
vehicle is on, the headlamps will turn off
automatically 10 minutes after the ignition is
turned off. When the headlamps are turned
on while the vehicle is off, the headlamps will
continue to stay on. Turn the control to the
off position to turn the headlamps off or the
battery will be drained.
A warning chime will sound if you open the
driver’s door when the ignition switch is off
and the headlamps are on.
Parking Lamps
Instrument Panel Lights
Taillamps
License Plate Lamps
You can switch your headlamps from low to high
beam by pushing the turn signal/multifunction
lever toward the instrument panel.
Headlamps on Reminder
If a door is open, a reminder chime will sound
when your headlamps or parking lamps are
manually turned on and your key is out of the
ignition. To turn off the chime, turn the headlamp
switch to off or AUTO and then back on, or
close and re-open the door. In the AUTO mode,
the headlamps turn off once the ignition is in
LOCK or may remain on until the headlamp delay
ends (if enabled in the DIC). See “Exit Lighting”
underDIC Vehicle Customization (With DIC
Buttons) on page 278.
Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)
Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) can make it easier
for others to see the front of your vehicle during
the day. DRL can be helpful in many different
driving conditions, but they can be especially
helpful in the short periods after dawn and before
sunset. Fully functional daytime running lamps
are required on all vehicles rst sold in Canada.

Warning Lights, Gages,
and Indicators
This part describes the warning lights and gages
on your vehicle. The pictures will help you
locate them.
Warning lights and gages can signal that
something is wrong before it becomes serious
enough to cause an expensive repair or
replacement. Paying attention to your warning
lights and gages could also save you or others
from injury.
Warning lights come on when there may be or
is a problem with one of your vehicle’s functions.
As you will see in the details on the next few
pages, some warning lights come on briey when
you start the engine just to let you know they
are working. If you are familiar with this section,
you should not be alarmed when this happens.Gages can indicate when there may be or is a
problem with one of your vehicle’s functions.
Often gages and warning lights work together
to let you know when there is a problem with your
vehicle.
When one of the warning lights comes on and
stays on when you are driving, or when one of
the gages shows there may be a problem, check
the section that tells you what to do about it.
Please follow this manual’s advice. Waiting to
do repairs can be costly — and even dangerous.
So please get to know your warning lights and
gages. They are a big help.
Your vehicle also has a Driver Information
Center (DIC) that works along with warning lights
and gages. SeeDIC Warnings and Messages
on page 267.

If, after several seconds, all status indicator lights
remain on, or if there are no lights at all, there
may be a problem with the lights or the passenger
sensing system. See your dealer for service.
{CAUTION:
If the off indicator and the airbag
readiness light ever come on together,
it means that something may be wrong
with the airbag system. If this ever
happens, have the vehicle serviced
promptly, because an adult-size person
sitting in the right front passenger seat
may not have the protection of the frontal
airbag. SeeAirbag Readiness Light
on page 242.
Charging System Light
The charging system
light will come on briey
when you turn on the
ignition, but the engine is
not running, as a check
to show you it is working.
It should go out once the engine is running. If it
stays on, or comes on while you are driving, you
may have a problem with the charging system.
It could indicate that you have problems with the
generator, the generator drive belt, or another
electrical problem. Have it checked right away.
Driving while this light is on could drain your battery.
When this light comes on, the Driver Information
Center (DIC) will also display the SERVICE
BATTERY NOT CHARGING SYSTEM message.
SeeDIC Warnings and Messages on page 267
for more information.
If you must drive a short distance with the light
on, be certain to turn off all your accessories,
such as the radio and air conditioner, to reduce
the drain on your battery.

Anti-Lock Brake System
Warning Light
With the Anti-Lock Brake
System (ABS), this light
will come on when
you start your engine
and may stay on for
several seconds.
That is normal. If the light does not come on then,
have it xed so it will be ready to warn you if
there is a problem.
If the light stays on, or comes on when you are
driving, your vehicle needs service. A chime
will sound when the light stays on. If the regular
brake system warning light is not on, you still
have brakes, but you do not have ABS.If the regular brake system warning light is
also on you do not have ABS and there is a
problem with your regular brakes. In addition to
both lights, you will also hear a chime sound
on the rst occurrence of a problem and each
time the vehicle is shut off and then restarted.
SeeBrake System Warning Light on page 246.
The ABS warning light should come on briey
when you turn the ignition key to RUN. If the light
does not come on then, have it xed so it will
be ready to warn you if there is a problem.
StabiliTrak®Indicator Light
This warning light
should come on
briey when the
engine is started.

Avoid needless heavy braking. Some people drive
in spurts — heavy acceleration followed by heavy
braking — rather than keeping pace with traffic.
This is a mistake. The brakes may not have time to
cool between hard stops. The brakes will wear out
much faster if you do a lot of heavy braking. If you
keep pace with the traffic and allow realistic
following distances, you will eliminate a lot of
unnecessary braking. That means better braking
and longer brake life.
If your vehicle’s engine ever stops while you are
driving, brake normally but do not pump the
brakes. If you do, the pedal may get harder to
push down. If the engine stops, you will still have
some power brake assist. But you will use it
when you brake. Once the power assist is used
up, it may take longer to stop and the brake pedal
will be harder to push.
Adding non-GM accessories can affect your
vehicle’s performance. SeeAccessories and
Modications on page 433.Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)
Your vehicle has the Anti-Lock Brake System
(ABS), an advanced electronic braking system that
will help prevent a braking skid.
When you start your engine and begin to drive
away, ABS will check itself. You may hear a
momentary motor or clicking noise while this test
is going on. This is normal.
If there is a problem
with ABS, this warning
light will stay on.
SeeAnti-Lock Brake
System Warning
Light on page 248.
Along with ABS, your vehicle has a Dynamic Rear
Proportioning (DRP) system. If there is a DRP
problem, both the brake and ABS warning lights
will come on accompanied by a 10-second
chime. The lights and chime will come on each
time the ignition is turned on until the problem is
repaired. See your dealer for service.

Traction Control Operation
The traction control system is part of the
StabiliTrak®system. Traction control limits wheel
spin by reducing engine power to the wheels
(engine speed management) and by applying
brakes to each individual wheel (brake-traction
control) as necessary.
The traction control system is enabled automatically
when you start your vehicle. It will activate and
the StabiliTrak
®light will ash if it senses that any
of the wheels are spinning or beginning to lose
traction while driving. If you turn off traction control,
only the brake-traction control portion of traction
control will work. The engine speed management
will be disabled. In this mode, engine power is not
reduced automatically and the driven wheels can
spin more freely. This can cause the brake-traction
control to activate constantly.
Notice:If you allow the wheel(s) of one axle
to spin excessively while the StabiliTrak
®,
ABS and brake warning lights and the
SERVICE STABILITRAK message are
displayed, you could damage the transfer case. The repairs would not be covered by your
warranty. Reduce engine power and do
not spin the wheel(s) excessively while these
lights and this message are displayed.
The traction control system may activate on dry
or rough roads or under conditions such as
heavy acceleration while turning or abrupt
upshifts/downshifts of the transmission. When
this happens, you may notice a reduction in
acceleration, or may hear a noise or vibration.
This is normal.
If your vehicle is in cruise control when the system
activates, the StabiliTrak
®light will ash and
the cruise control will automatically disengage.
When road conditions allow you to use cruise
again, you may re-engage the cruise control.
SeeCruise Control on page 212.
StabiliTrak
®may also turn off automatically if it
determines that a problem exists with the system.
If the problem does not clear itself after restarting
the vehicle, you should see your dealer for
service.
