When to Inspect the Engine
Air Cleaner/Filter
Inspect the air cleaner/lter at the MaintenanceII
intervals and replace it at the rst oil change
after each 50,000 mile (85 000 km) interval.

more information. If you are driving in dusty/dirty
conditions, inspect the lter at each engine oil
change.
How to Inspect the Engine
Air Cleaner/Filter
2.2L and 2.4L L4 Engines
To inspect the air cleaner/lter remove the lter
from the vehicle and lightly shake the lter to
release loose dust and dirt. If the lter remains
caked with dirt, a new lter is required. Never use
compressed air to clean the lter.To inspect or replace the lter, remove the screws
that hold the cover on and lift off the cover.
Be sure to reinstall the cover tightly.
2.0L L4 Supercharged Engine
There is a special procedure for inspecting and
replacing the lter. Because this procedure is
difficult, you should have it done at your dealer
service department. Contact your dealer for
additional information, or the procedure can be
found in the service manual. To purchase a service

{CAUTION:
Operating the engine with the air
cleaner/lter off can cause you or others
to be burned. The air cleaner not only
cleans the air; it helps to stop ames
if the engine backres. If it is not there
and the engine backres, you could be
burned. Do not drive with it off, and be
careful working on the engine with the
air cleaner/lter off.
Notice:If the air cleaner/lter is off, a backre
can cause a damaging engine re. And, dirt
can easily get into your engine, which will
damage it. Always have the air cleaner/lter
in place when you are driving.
Automatic Transaxle Fluid
It is not necessary to check the transaxle uid
level. A transaxle uid leak is the only reason for
uid loss. If a leak occurs, take your vehicle to
the dealership service department and have
it repaired as soon as possible.
Change the uid and lter at the intervals listed
inAdditional Required Services on page 398,
and be sure to use the transaxle uid listed in
Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page 406.
Notice:Use of the incorrect automatic
transaxle uid may damage your vehicle,
and the damages may not be covered by
your warranty. Always use the automatic
transaxle uid listed inRecommended Fluids
and Lubricants on page 406.
Manual Transaxle Fluid
It is not necessary to check the transaxle uid
level. A transaxle uid leak is the only reason for
uid loss. If a leak occurs, take the vehicle to the
dealer and have it repaired as soon as possible.

Be sure any necessary repairs are completed at
once. Whenever any uids or lubricants are added
to your vehicle, make sure they are the proper
ones, as shown inRecommended Fluids and
Lubricants on page 406.
At Each Fuel Fill
It is important to perform these underhood checks
at each fuel ll.
Engine Oil Level Check
Check the engine oil level and add the proper
oil if necessary. SeeEngine Oil on page 293for
further details.Notice:It is important to check the engine oil
regularly and keep it at the proper level.
Failure to keep the engine oil at the proper
level can cause damage to the engine not
covered by your warranty.
Engine Coolant Level Check
Check the engine coolant level and add
DEX-COOL®coolant mixture if necessary. See
Engine Coolant on page 302for further details.
Intercooler Coolant Level Check
(2.0L Supercharged Engine)
Check the coolant level and add DEX-COOL®
coolant mixture if necessary. SeeEngine Coolant
on page 302for further details.
Windshield Washer Fluid Level Check
Check the windshield washer uid level in
the windshield washer uid reservoir and add the
proper uid if necessary.
