TEST NTC-8ACHECKING FUEL TEMPERATURE SENSOR CALIBRATION
Perform TEST NTC-1A Before Proceeding
*Perform Verification TEST VER-2A. **Check connectors - Clean / repair as necessary.
KEY ON, ENGINE START AND IDLE THE
START TEST OFF. USING THE ENGINE UNTIL
NTC-8A. DRB, MONITOR THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE
ECT SENSOR INPUT. REACHES 70*C
(160*F).
NOTE: IF ENGINE TEMP USING THE DRB, IS THE FUEL
IS ABOVE 70*C READ THE FUEL TEMPERATURE NO REPLACE THE FUEL
(160*F), ALLOW THE TEMPERATURE SENSOR BETWEEN INJECTION PUMP
ENGINE TO COOL DOWN INPUT. 20*C (70*F) AND ASSEMBLY.*
TO 70*C (160*F). 50*C (120*F)?
YES
COMPARE THE ECT START THE ENGINE DOES THE FUEL TEMP
AND FUEL AND ALLOW IT TO SENSOR READING NO REPLACE THE FUEL
TEMPERATURE SENSOR REACH OPERATING INCREASE STEADILY INJECTION PUMP
INPUTS IN THE TEMPERATURE OF TO 38-60*C ASSEMBLY.*
FOLLOWING STEP. 80*C (195*F). (100-140*F)?

TEST NTC-12ACHECKING THE ENGINE MECHANICAL SYSTEMS
Perform TEST NTC-1A Before Proceeding
At this point in the diagnostic test procedure, you have determined that all of theengine electrical
systemsare operating as designed; therefore, theyare not the cause of the driveability problem.
The following additional items should be checked as possible mechanical causes of the problem.
1. ENGINE VALVE TIMING- must be within specifications
2. ENGINE COMPRESSION- must be within specifications
3. CAMSHAFT LOBES- check for abnormal wear
4. ENGINE SPEED SENSOR PICK-UP- check flywheel slots for debris/deterioration
5. ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM- must be free of any restrictions
6. ENGINE DRIVE SPROCKET- must be properly positioned
7. POWER BRAKE BOOSTER- no internal vacuum leaks
8. FUEL- must be free of contamination
9. FUEL INJECTOR- plugged or restricted injector
10. FUEL INJECTION PUMP- must be properly timed
NOTE:Always look for any Technical Service Bulletins that may relate to the problem.

TEST NS-SELNO START SELECTION MENU
NOTE:The battery must be fully charged before performing any test in this manual.
NOTE:If the engine will not crank or cranks but will not run, be sure to check the Sentry Key
Immobilizer Module (SKIM) for proper communication and trouble codes.
NOTE:With the DRB, attempt to read ECM trouble codes. If the DRB is unable to communicate with
the ECM, perform test NS-2A. If there are any trouble codes present they must be repaired before
continuing with the No Start Symptom diagnostics.
Below you will find a recommended procedure to correct a No Start Problem by symptom. They
should be performed in the order that they are listed.
Repairing a No Crank Condition..............................................NS-1A
Repairing a No Response Condition...........................................NS-2A
Repairing a No Start Condition................................................NS-3A
Repairing a Start and Stall Condition...........................................NS-4A
Checking the Engine Mechanical Systems......................................NS-5A
NOTE:A failed engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor can cause a cranks but will not run or an
extended cranking before starting condition. This occurs when the ECT sensor calibration fails
(sensor indicates engine temp is warmer than actual engine temp) and the ECM cannot command
proper fuel quantity to the injection pump.
