Ram Pickup
DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
A permanent magnet wiper motor is used for low, high or
intermittent (delay) wiper functions. Base intermittent (delay) wipe\
r
function provides a .5-18 second delay mode. On high-line models,
delay function is speed sensitive. At vehicle speeds greater than 10
MPH, delay mode range is 1/2-18 seconds. At vehicle speeds less than
10 MPH, delay mode doubles to 1-36 seconds.
Delay function is controlled by Central Timer Module (CTM),
located under passenger side of instrument panel, outboard of glove
box. CTM switches an intermittent wiper relay, located in Power
Distribution Center (PDC). On high line models, CTM is connected to
Chrysler Collision Detection (CCD) data bus network to receive vehicle\
speed information for delay function.
Washer system consists of rubber hoses and nozzles, an
electric pump, sealed motor, low washer fluid indicator (if equipped)
and reservoir.
ADJUSTMENTS
WIPER BLADES
With wiper arms removed, cycle wiper motor into PARK
position. Mount arms on pivot shafts, and ensure distances are as
specified. See Fig. 1. Operate wiper blades, and check whether they
return to proper position. If wiper blades do not return to this
position, check linkage and pivot assembly for wear and binding.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

MOTOR WILL NOT RUN
Check for blown fuse. Check voltage at motor. Check wiper
switch, ground circuit and wiring.
MOTOR RUNS, BLADES DO NOT MOVE
Check for loose motor crank, disconnected linkage or loose
arms on pivot shaft. Check for faulty wiper motor.
BLADES DO NOT PARK PROPERLY
Check for improperly installed wiper arms. Check for faulty
linkage. Check for faulty wiring, wiper switch or wiper motor.
WIPER KNOCK NOISE
Check for improperly installed wiper arms. Check for faulty
linkage or wiper motor.
BLADES CHATTER
Check for foreign substance on blades or glass. Check for
twisted arm holding blade at wrong angle to glass. Check for bent or
damaged blades.
WASHERS DO NOT OPERATE
Check for low washer fluid level. Check for contaminated
washer fluid. Check for leaking or improperly routed hoses. Check for
faulty wiring, wiper switch or washer pump.
COMPONENT TESTS
INTERMITTENT WIPER RELAY
1) Remove relay. See INTERMITTENT WIPER RELAY under REMOVAL &
INSTALLATION. Check continuity between relay terminals No. 30 and 87A.
Continuity should exist. Check continuity between relay terminals No.
30 and 87. Continuity should not exist. Check resistance between relay
terminals No. 85 and 86. Resistance should be 70-80 ohms.
2) Connect battery voltage between relay terminals No. 85 and
86. Check continuity between relay terminals No. 30 and 87A.
Continuity should not exist. Check continuity between relay terminals
No. 30 and 87. Continuity should exist. Replace relay if continuity or
resistance is not as specified.
WIPER/WASHER SWITCH
NOTE: Wiper/washer switch is part of multifunction steering column
switch. If wiper/washer switch fails, entire multifunction
switch must be replaced.
Disconnect wiper/washer switch connector. Check continuity
between appropriate switch terminals with switch in specified
position. See WIPER/WASHER CONTINUITY TEST table. See Fig. 2. Replace
multifunction switch if continuity is not as specified.

( 1) - At maximum delay position, resistance should be 270-330 k/ohms
between all terminal pairs listed. At minimum delay position,
resistance should be zero when ohmmeter is set on high ohm scale
between all terminal pairs listed.

SYSTEM TESTS
WARNING: All vehicles are equipped with air bag restraint systems. See
appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article before
servicing steering wheel or column. Use extreme caution to
avoid personal injury and vehicle damage.
NOTE: If problem occurs in electronic components, wiring, wiper
switch or wiper motor, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will
be stored in BCM. For testing procedures, see appropriate
BODY CONTROL COMPUTER TESTS article.
WASHER
NOTE: Following testing applies when pump does not operate. If pump
operates, see TROUBLE SHOOTING.
1) Turn ignition on. Turn wiper switch on. If wipers operate,
go to next step. If wipers do not operate, diagnose wiper problem
first. See WIPER.

2) Turn wiper switch off. Depress washer switch. Washer pump
and wipers should operate while switch is depressed. Wipers should
operate about 3 sweeps after switch is released. If wipers are okay
but washer is not, go to next step. If washer is okay but wipers are
not, go to step 5).
3) Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable.
Disconnect washer pump harness connector. Check resistance between
washer pump harness connector Black wire terminal and ground. If
resistance is more than zero ohms, repair open in Black wire. If
resistance is zero ohms, go to next step.
4) Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. While
depressing washer switch, check voltage at washer pump harness
connector Brown wire terminal. If battery voltage exists, replace
pump. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Brown wire.
5) Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable.
Access CTM and disconnect CTM harness connector. Connect negative
battery cable. Turn ignition on. With washer switch depressed, check
voltage at CTM 14-pin harness connector terminal No. 10 (Brown wire).
See Fig. 3 . If battery voltage exists, check intermittent relay. See
INTERMITTENT WIPER RELAY under COMPONENT TESTS. If battery voltage
does not exist, repair open in Brown wire.

NOTE: This testing applies to base model Ram Pickup. For high line
Ram Pickup testing, see appropriate BODY CONTROL COMPUTER
TESTS article.
NOTE: Wiper system utilizes a Central Timer Module (CTM) to control\
intermittent functions of wiper system. If problem is only
pulse wipe or wipe-after-wash, see WASHER.
1) Check fuse No. 6 (25-amp) in junction block. If fuse is
blown, replace fuse and repair short as necessary. If fuse is okay, go
to next step.
2) Turn ignition on. Check for battery voltage at fuse. If
battery voltage does not exist, repair open circuit between fuse and
ignition switch as necessary. If battery voltage exists, go to next
step.
3) Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable.
Disconnect multifunction switch harness connector. Connect negative
battery cable. Turn ignition on. Check for battery voltage at
multifunction switch harness connector terminal No. 4 (Dark Blue
wire). See Fig. 2. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If
battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Dark Blue wire between
fuse and multifunction switch.
4) If problem is intermittent wipe feature only, go to next
step. If problem is with all wiper modes or only HI and/or LO speed
modes, go to step 7).
5) Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable.
Disconnect CTM 14-pin harness connector. Check continuity between
multifunction switch harness connector terminal No. 1 (White/Dark Blue
wire) and CTM 14-pin harness connector terminal No. 12 (White/Dark
Blue wire). See Fig. 3. If continuity does not exist, repair open in
White/Dark Blue wire. If continuity exists, go to next step.
6) Check continuity between multifunction switch harness
connector terminal No. 2 (Violet wire) and CTM 14-pin harness
connector terminal No. 3 (Violet wire). If continuity does not exist,
repair open in Violet wire. If continuity exists, check intermittent
relay. See INTERMITTENT WIPER RELAY under COMPONENT TESTS.
7) Check continuity between multifunction switch harness
connector terminals No. 6 (Brown/White wire) and No. 9 (Brown/White
wire). If continuity does not exist, repair open in Brown/White wire.
If continuity exists, go to next step.
8) Check multifunction (wiper/washer) switch. See
WIPER/WASHER SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If switch tests okay,
connect switch and go to next step. If switch does not test okay,
replace multifunction switch.
9) Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable.
Access wiper motor harness connector. Check resistance between wiper
motor harness connector Black wire terminal and ground. If resistance
is more than zero ohms, repair open in Black wire. If resistance is
zero ohms, go to next step.
10) Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. Check
voltage by backprobing at wiper motor harness connector terminals
listed with multifunction switch in appropriate position. See SWITCH
POSITION VOLTAGE TEST table. If battery voltage exists at each
terminal, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist at any
terminal, repair open in appropriate wire.

11) Check voltage by backprobing wiper motor connector
terminal No. 2 (Dark Green wire) with multifunction switch in LO or HI\
position, then move switch to OFF. Voltage should vary between battery
voltage and zero volts while wiper motor is cycling. Battery voltage
should be present when switch is turned off, and zero volts when
wipers return to park position. If voltage is not as specified,
replace wiper motor.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
WARNING: For all vehicles equipped with air bag restraint systems, see
appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article before
servicing steering wheel or column. Use extreme caution to
avoid personal injury and vehicle damage.
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory
systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist
until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See
COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION
before disconnecting battery.
CENTRAL TIMER MODULE (CTM)
NOTE: When installing new high line CTM, use scan tool to determine
customer preferred settings before replacement. Settings must
be enabled/disabled using scan tool.
Removal & Installation
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver's side knee

bolster. Remove CTM from bracket on inboard side of instrument panel
steering column opening. Disconnect harness connectors. To install,
reverse removal procedure.
INTERMITTENT WIPER RELAY
Removal & Installation
Intermittent wiper relay is located in Power Distribution
Center (PDC) in engine compartment. Remove cover and remove relay. To
install, reverse removal procedures
WIPER ARMS
Removal & Installation
Open hood. Lift wiper and slide latch to hold wiper off of
windshield. With a rocking motion, remove wiper arm. To install,
ensure wiper motor is in park position. Slide wiper arm on shaft.
Align wiper arms. See WIPER BLADES under ADJUSTMENTS.
WIPER MOTOR
NOTE: Wiper linkage and motor module is replaced as a unit.
Removal & Installation
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove wiper arms. See
WIPER ARMS. Remove weatherstrip along front edge of cowl. Release
plastic anchor screws. Lift cowl grille from vehicle. Remove washer
hose from "Y" fitting. Set grille aside.
2) Remove wiper linkage mounting bolts. Turn linkage over and
disconnect harness connector from wiper motor. Remove wiper linkage
and motor module. To install, reverse removal procedure. Align wiper
arms. See WIPER BLADES under ADJUSTMENTS.
WIPER/WASHER SWITCH
NOTE: Wiper/washer switch is part of multifunction steering column
switch. If wiper/washer switch fails, entire multifunction
switch must be replaced.
Removal & Installation
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove tilt lever (if
equipped). Remove steering column upper and lower covers to access
switch connector. Remove switch connector. Remove multifunction switch
tamperproof screws.
2) Gently pull switch away from column and loosen connector
screw (screw remains in connector). Remove switch. To install, reverse\
removal procedure. Tighten screws and nuts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure switch is functioning properly.
WASHER RESERVOIR
Removal & Installation
Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system.
Disconnect upper radiator hose from radiator. Disconnect harness
connectors from washer pump and washer fluid level sensor. Remove
washer supply hose from washer pump and drain washer fluid. While
pulling reservoir away from fan shroud, lift reservoir upward to
disengage mounting tabs from fan shroud. Remove washer reservoir. To
install, reverse removal procedure.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove hose from washer
pump. Drain fluid from reservoir. Disconnect harness connectors from
washer pump. Pry pump away from reservoir, being careful not to
puncture reservoir. Remove and discard grommet. To install, reverse
removal procedure. Use a NEW rubber grommet.
