is to be serviced, slowly loosen inlet side of fuel fill tube fitting
at check valve. It is normal for approximately 25 psi of residual
natural gas pressure to flow from loosened fitting. At this point, all
fuel tubes are purged of natural gas between fuel cylinders and
engine. It is now okay to open fuel system.
WARNING: Fuel cylinders still contain high-pressure fuel.
Compressed Natural Gas Fuel Cylinder Purging (5.2L)
1) Open manual shutoff valve. Open only fuel control valve(s)\
(counterclockwise) on fuel cylinder(s) to be serviced. Close all oth\
er
control valve(s) (clockwise) on fuel cylinder(s) not being service\
d.
2) Start and operate engine until it runs out of fuel.
Attempt 3 more engine starts. At this point, all fuel tubes and opened
cylinders are purged of natural gas between fuel cylinders and engine.
It is now okay to open fuel system.
WARNING: Fuel cylinders not being serviced still contain high-pressure
fuel.
FUEL LINE DISCONNECT FITTINGS
Removal & Installation (Tab Type Fitting)
1) Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Ensure area around fuel line and
disconnect fitting is clean. Place shop towel around fuel line.
2) On 2-tab connectors, squeeze retainer tabs together and
pull fuel tube/quick-connect fitting assembly off of fuel tube nipple.
On single-tab connectors, use screwdriver to pry up pull tab. See
Fig. 1 . Raise pull tab until it separates from quick-connect fitting.
Discard old pull tab. Disconnect quick-connect fitting from fuel line.
CAUTION: DO NOT install a quick-connect fitting without retainer being
either in fuel tube or already in quick-connect fitting.
After installing fuel line in disconnect fitting, pull on
fuel line and disconnect fitting to ensure fuel line is
locked in place.
3) To install, coat fuel tube nipple with clean 30W engine
oil. Insert quick-connect fitting into fuel tube until stop on fuel
tube rests against back of quick-connect fitting.
4) On single-tab connectors, obtain NEW pull tab. Push tab
down until it locks into quick-connect fitting. On 2-tab connectors,
firmly pull on fuel tube and fitting to ensure retainer and quick-
connect fitting are locked.
Removal & Installation (Retainer Type Fitting)
1) Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Ensure area around fuel line and
disconnect fitting is clean. Place shop towel around fuel line.
2) Pull backward on disconnect fitting while depressing
plastic ring into disconnect fitting. See Fig. 2. Separate fuel line
from disconnect fitting.
NOTE: Plastic retainer ring must be pressed squarely into fitting
body. If retainer is cocked during removal, it may be
difficult to disconnect fitting. Use open-end wrench on
shoulder of plastic retainer to ease disconnection.
3) To install, ensure plastic ring is in outward position
(away from disconnect fitting). If plastic ring is in inward position
(toward disconnect fitting), disconnect fitting must be replaced.
4) Lubricate end of fuel line with 30W engine oil. Insert

Engine pre-oiling can be done using pressure oiler (if
available). Connect pressure oiler to cylinder block oil passage
such as oil pressure sending unit. Operate pressure oiler long enough
to ensure correct amount of oil has filled crankcase. Check oil level
while pre-oiling.
If pressure oiler is not available, disconnect ignition
system. Remove oil pressure sending unit and replace with oil pressure
test gauge. Using starter motor, rotate engine starter until gauge
shows normal oil pressure for several seconds. DO NOT crank engine
for more than 30 seconds to avoid starter motor damage.
Ensure oil pressure has reached the most distant point from
the oil pump. Reinstall oil pressure sending unit. Reconnect ignition
system.
INITIAL START-UP
Start the engine and operate engine at low speed while
checking for coolant, fuel and oil leaks. Stop engine. Recheck coolant
and oil level. Adjust if necessary.
CAMSHAFT
Break-in procedure is required when a new or reground
camshaft has been installed. Operate and maintain engine speed between
1500-2500 RPM for approximately 30 minutes. Procedure may vary due to
manufacturers recommendations.
PISTON RINGS
Piston rings require a break-in procedure to ensure seating
of rings to cylinder walls. Serious damage may occur to rings if
correct procedures are not followed.
Extremely high piston ring temperatures are produced obtained
during break-in process. If rings are exposed to excessively high RPM
or high cylinder pressures, ring damage can occur. Follow piston ring
manufacturer's recommended break-in procedure.
FINAL ADJUSTMENTS
Check or adjust ignition timing and dwell (if applicable).
Adjust valves (if necessary). Adjust carburetion or injection idle
speed and mixture. Retighten cylinder heads (if required). If
cylinder head or block is aluminum, retighten bolts when engine is
cold. Follow the engine manufacturer's recommended break-in procedure
and maintenance schedule for new engines.
NOTE: Some manufacturer's require that head bolts be retightened
after specified amount of operation. This must be done to
prevent head gasket failure.

1) Connect a vacuum gauge in line with Black heater vacuum
supply hose (located at tee near power brake booster, in engine
compartment). Position gauge so it can be viewed from passenger
compartment.
2) Start engine. While observing vacuum gauge, rotate mode
control knob to each mode position (one position at a time). Pause
after each selection. Vacuum gauge should drop then return to 8 in. Hg
shortly after each selection is made. If vacuum gauge reading is as
specified, go to next step. If gauge reading is not as specified,
check for vacuum leak in vacuum lines or heater control panel.
3) Move temperature control knob quickly to full hot and full
cold positions. A distinct sound of blend-air door hitting its stops
should be heard. No spring-back of knob should exist.
4) If temperature control knob operates as specified,
temperature control system is okay. If temperature control knob does
not operate as specified, check condition, routing, installation and
adjustment of temperature control cable. See
TEMPERATURE CONTROL CABLE ADJUSTMENT.
HEATER OUTPUT
1) Start engine. Allow engine to reach normal operating
temperature. With engine at idle, set controls to maximum heat, floor
and high blower positions. Using a thermometer, check air temperature
coming from floor vents. See HEATER OUTPUT TEMPERATURE table.
2) If floor outlet air temperature is lower than specified,
check cooling system and electric cooling fan. See ELECTRIC COOLING
FAN article.
3) Check that both return and supply heater hoses are hot. If
coolant return hose is much cooler than supply hose, repair coolant
obstruction in heater system. Check for air flow obstruction in heater
system. Check blend air door for proper operation.

2) If no DTCs appear, cluster will start a walking segment
test. First, all segments will be illuminated, then each segment in
sequence. If any segment does not illuminate, repeat test to confirm
and replace instrument cluster. When walking segment test is complete,
bulb check will start.
3) If any bulb does not light, remove instrument cluster and
check bulb and bulb holder. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL &
INSTALLATION. Ensure bulb holder is properly installed in cluster. If
bulb and bulb holder are okay, replace instrument cluster. If LED does
not light, replace instrument cluster. When bulb check is complete,
gauge actuator test will start.
4) Each gauge needle should stop at 3 calibration points,
then return to relaxed position. If any gauge does not perform as
specified, remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect all connections between printed
circuit board and gauge terminals, repair as necessary. If connections
are okay, replace instrument cluster. Instrument cluster will
automatically exit self-diagnostics when test is complete.
SYSTEM TESTS
NOTE: There are 2 instrument cluster connectors. These connectors
look identical. Identify connector by wire color. See WIRING
DIAGRAMS.
BRAKE WARNING LIGHT INOPERATIVE
1) Ensure parking brake is released. Turn ignition on. If
brake warning light stays on, check and repair hydraulic brake system
as necessary. See appropriate DISC & DRUM article in BRAKES section.
2) If brake warning light does not illuminate when ignition
is on, check fuse No. 17 (10-amp) on Ram Pickup or fuse No. 11 (10-
amp) on Ram Van and Ram Wagon in junction block. Junction block is
located at left end cover of instrument panel. If fuse is okay, go to
next step. If fuse is blown, locate and repair cause of blown fuse.
Install new fuse and recheck system operation.
3) Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and power
side of fuse No. 17 on Ram Pickup or fuse No. 11 on Ram Van and Ram
Wagon. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery
voltage is not present, locate and repair open circuit between to

RADIATOR FAN
WARNING: Keep hands away from radiator fan.
STARTING FLUID USE (TURBO DIESEL)
WARNING: DO NOT USE starting fluids (ether) or flammable liquids to
aid the starting of a Cummins Turbo-Diesel. NEVER pour diesel
fuel, flammable liquids or starting fluids into the air
cleaner canister, air intake or turbocharger housing in an
attempt to start the vehicle. A flash fire may result causing
personal injury.
TIRE CHAINS
CAUTION: Do NOT install tire chains or traction devices on front
wheels of 4x4 models with tires larger than P215/75R15. Do
NOT install tire chains or traction devices on rear wheels of
4x4 models with tires larger than P235/75R15. These tires are
too large for sufficient body clearance with chains or other
traction devices. Tire chains are not allowed on 4x2 vehicles
equipped with P235/70R15 tires or 4x4 vehicles equipped with
31 x 10.50R15 tires.
CAUTION: Do NOT drive for a prolonged period of time on dry pavement.
TURBOCHARGED MODELS (TURBO-DIESEL)
CAUTION: Do not race engine immediately after starting. When
stopping engine, allow engine to idle for approximately 60
seconds before shutting it off. Failure to do so may cause
turbocharger damage due to lack of oil flowing to
the turbocharger bearings.

and the variety of after-market extended warranties
available, please refer to the warranty package that came
with the vehicle to verify all warranty options.

INTERMITTENT PARASITIC LOAD PROBLEMS
Intermittent parasitic lad can occur because of a memory
device that does not power down with ignition off. With an
intermittent parasitic load, battery draw can be greater than 1.0 amp.
To find and intermittent problem requires that an ammeter and
Disconnect Tool (J-38758) test switch be connected and left in the
circuit. See Fig. 1. Road test vehicle. After road test, turn ignition
off and remove key.
Monitor the milliamps scale for 15-20 minutes after ignition
is turned off. This allows monitoring memory devices to determine if
they time out and stop drawing memory current. The test switch is
needed to protect ammeter when the vehicles is started.

Procedure For Programming PCM & Clearing DTCs From ABS & SRS
Modules
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is
located under left side of instrument panel. Using scan tool, enter
correct VIN and mileage into PCM. Using scan tool manufacturer's
instructions, clear DTCs from ABS and SRS modules.
Procedure For Updating Secret Key Data
1) Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is
located under left side of instrument panel.
2) Go to ENGINE and then MISC menus on scan tool. Place the
SKIM in SECURED ACCESS MODE by using the appropriate Personal
Identification Number (PIN) for this vehicle. PIN may be obtained from\
the owner, vehicle's invoice, or from the manufacturer. Select UPDATE
THE SECRET KEY DATA. The data will be transferred from Smart Key
Immobilizer Module (SKIM) to the PCM, allowing the vehicle to start.
NOTE: On Ram Van and Ram Wagon, if 3 attempts are made to enter the
SECURED ACCESS MODE using the incorrect Personal
Identification Number (PIN), the SECURED ACCESS MODE will be
locked out for one hour. To exit this locked out mode, leave
ignition switch in the ON position for one hour with all
accessories turned off. It may be necessary to monitor
battery state and connect a battery charger if necessary.
ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES
BATTERY TEMPERATURE SENSOR
Removal & Installation
Battery temperature sensor is snapped into center of battery
tray, directly below the battery. Remove battery. Disconnect
electrical connector for battery temperature sensor. Pry battery
temperature sensor straight upward from battery tray. To install,
reverse removal procedure.
BRAKE SWITCH
NOTE: Brake switch may also be referred to as brakelight switch or
stoplight switch.
Removal (Dakota, Durango & Ram Pickup)
1) Brake switch is located near top of brake pedal. Remove
lower instrument panel cover for access to brake switch if necessary.
Disconnect electrical connector from brake switch. Depress and hold
brake pedal downward.
2) Rotate brake switch counterclockwise approximately 30
degrees so alignment tab on brake switch aligns with opening on
mounting bracket. Pull brake switch rearward from mounting bracket.
NOTE: Before installing brake switch, plunger on brake switch must
be pulled outward to fully extended position and then pushed
inward 4 detent positions to ensure proper brake switch
adjustment.
Installation
1) Pull plunger on brake switch outward to the fully extended
position. Push plunger on brake switch inward 4 detent positions. The
brake switch will click at each detent position when pushing plunger
inward.
2) Install electrical connector on brake switch. Depress
brake pedal as far as possible. Install brake switch in mounting

NOTE: Before testing, check fluid level, belt tension, pump pulley,
tire pressure and engine idle speed.
HYDRAULIC SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST
NOTE: Replacement fittings are required on Pressure Test Gauge(C
-3309E) for adapting to "O" ring type hose tube ends.
Idle Pressure Test
1) Remove high pressure hose at steering pump and connect a
spare hose to pump fitting. Connect opposite end of spare hose to
Pressure Test Gauge (C-3309E). Connect pressure hose from valve side
of steering gear to valve side of gauge. Valve must be installed on
outlet side of gauge. See Fig. 2.
2) Fully open shutoff valve on test gauge. With a thermometer
in fluid reservoir, start engine and warm fluid to 150-170
F (66-
77 C). Turning wheels from stop-to-stop will aid in warming fluid. DO
NOT hold wheels against stop.
3) With engine at idle and gauge valve open, check initial
pressure. See POWER STEERING PUMP PRESSURE TEST SPECIFICATIONS table.
If pressure is greater than 125 psi (8.8 kg/cm
), check for restricted
hoses or crimped lines.
