EssEntial information
fuEl pump shut-off switch – this device stops the electric fuel pump from sending fuel to
the engine when your vehicle has had a substantial jolt. after an accident, if you find that the
engine cranks, but does not start, this switch may have been activated. the fuel pump shut-off
switch is located in the front passenger’s footwell, behind a flip-up cover, by the kick panel
access cover.
location of sparE tirE – Your vehicle is equipped with a temporary spare tire located under
the vehicle, just forward of the rear bumper. the temporary spare tire is designed for emergency
use only and should be replaced as soon as possible. the jack and tools are located under the
carpeted floor panel in the rear cargo area. for complete details on how to change your tire,
refer to the roadside Emergencies chapter in your owner’s Guide.
t ir E p r Essur E – Your tire pressure is properly set at the dealership according to the recommended
specifications found on the safety compliance certification label or tire label located on the
B- pillar or the edge of the driver’s door. check your tire pressure at least once a month and before
long trips (including spare). as an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure warning light

in the message center when one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. improperly
inflated tires can affect vehicle h andling and can fail suddenly, possibly resulting in loss of vehicle
control. refer to the tires, wheels and loading chapter in your owner’s Guide for more details
and safety information.
EasY fuEl™ ‘no cap’ fuEl sYstEm – Your vehicle has a ‘no cap’ fuel system which allows you
to simply open the fuel filler door, insert the nozzle and start fueling. wait about five seconds
before pulling out the nozzle in order to allow any residual fuel to drain into the tank. the Easy
fuel™ system is self-sealing and therefore protected against dust, dirt, water, snow and ice. if
you need to fill your fuel tank with a portable fuel container, use the fuel funnel which is located
inside the rear passenger side cargo compartment access door. slowly insert the funnel into the
Easy fuel™ system and fill the tank with fuel from the container. when done, clean the funnel
or properly dispose of it. Extra funnels can be purchased from your authorized dealer. Do not use
aftermarket funnels as they will not work with the Easy fuel™ system and may cause damage.
fuEl tank capacitY/fuEl info – Your vehicle has a fuel tank capacity of 17.5 gallons (66.2l). if
you have a V6 engine, you have a flex fuel vehicle. flex fuel vehicles have a yellow ring around
the top of the fuel filler inlet (tube) and can use either regular unleaded fuel, E85 Ethanol
fuel or any mixture of the two. if you do not have a flex fuel vehicle, then only use “regular”
unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87. Do not use E85 fuels because your vehicle was
not designed to run on fuels with more than 10% ethanol.
sos post-crash alErt sYstEm™ – Your vehicle is equipped with the sos post-crash alert
system™. this system provides audible and visual alarms in the event of a crash which causes the
deployment of airbags or the activation of the safety belt pretensioners. the turn signals will
flash and the horn will sound. to deactivate the system, press the hazard flasher control
, or
you can press the
button on your remote transmitter.
roaDsiDE assistancE – Your new ford Escape comes with the assurance and support of
24-hour emergency roadside assistance. roadside assistance includes such services as: lockout
assistance, limited fuel delivery, battery jump starts, changing a flat tire, towing, and winch out.

automatic DimminG intErior rEar ViEw mirror – (if equipped) Your vehicle may be
equipped with an interior rear view mirror which has an auto-dimming feature. when the
mirror detects bright lights behind the vehicle, it automatically darkens the image to help
minimize glare. the mirror will automatically return to its normal state when the vehicle is
in reverse (r) to ensure that you have a clear view while backing up.
intEGratED kEYhEaD transmittEr (ikt) rEmotE EntrY fEaturEs

unlock the doors as well as open the liftgate without a key. Ensure that you have
your five digit factory code located on your owner’s wallet card in the glove box.
• To unlock the driver’s door, enter your five digit factory code.
• To unlock all doors, enter your five digit factory code and, within five seconds, press 3-4.
• To open the liftgate, enter your five digit factory code and, within five seconds, press 5-6.
• To lock all vehicle doors, press 7-8 and 9-0 at the same time (you do not need to enter your
factory code first).
moon roof – (if equipped) the moon roof is equipped with an automatic, one-touch, opening,
closing and venting feature. to open, press and release the rear portion of the control located
in the overhead console. to stop motion at any time during the one-touch opening, press the
control a second time. to close, press and release the front portion of the control until the
glass stops moving. to open the moon roof to the vent position, press the front portion of the
control. to close, press and hold the rear portion of the control until the glass stops moving.
amBiEnt liGhtinG – (if equipped) Your vehicle may be equipped with an ambient lighting
feature which, when activated, illuminates the footwells, cup holders and console bin with
a choice of several colors. ambient lighting is operational when the ignition is on or in the
accessory position. press
on the center console repeatedly to turn on, cycle through your
color choices, and turn off.

communications and entertainment system with special phone and media

designed to improve fuel economy by reducing fuel usage during coasting or while decelerating.
this may be perceived as a light to medium braking sensation when removing your foot from

mYkEY™ – (if equipped) allows you to program certain driving restrictions on any standard key
in order to promote good driving habits. when mykey™ is programmed:
• Belt-Minder® cannot be disabled and will sound continuously and the audio will be muted
until the safety belt is buckled.
• Audible and visual low fuel warnings are provided.
• Certain features cannot be turned off such as the reverse sensing system.
• Audio volume can be limited.
• Vehicle speed can be limited.
• Audible and visual speed warnings can be configured at preselected speeds.
• AdvanceTrac
® can be programmed so that it cannot be turned off.

intEGratED BlinD spot mirrors – Your outside mirrors have an integrated convex mirror in
the upper corner. this increases visibility alongside the vehicle; thereby helping you see a vehicle
which may be in your blind spot. as the vehicle approaches, its image will transition from the
main mirror to the blind spot mirror in the upper corner. refer to your owner’s Guide for
more information.
rEarViEw camEra – (if equipped) this system provides a visual display of the area behind the
vehicle. the display automatically appears in the rearview mirror or on the navigation screen
(if equipped) when the vehicle is in reverse (r) and uses colors (green, yellow and red) to alert
you of your proximity to objects. Note: Visibility aids do not replace the need to watch where
the vehicle is moving. refer to your owner’s Guide for safety information, more detail
and limitations.
uniVErsal GaraGE Door opEnEr – (if equipped) Your vehicle may be equipped with the
car2u
® system located in the driver’s visor. the car2u® home automation system is a universal
transmitter that provides a way of opening your garage door and also for remotely activating
some devices within your home. the system works by learning the frequency codes that operate
garage doors and certain devices within the home. for more information, refer to the Driver
controls chapter in your owner’s Guide.

1. hEaDlamp controls –
: turns the headlamps off.
: turns on parking, instrument panel, license plate and tail lamps.
: turns on low beam headlamps.
:
autolamps (if equipped) automatically turns the exterior lamps on/off based on
available daylight.
: turns on fog lamps (if equipped) by pulling the control towards you.
2. multi-function lEVEr – rotate the end of the control up/down to increase/decrease the
speed of the wipers.
push the end of the stalk:
• quickly for a single swipe without fluid.
• and hold briefly for three swipes with washer fluid.
• and hold for a longer wash cycle. To operate your rear window wiper, turn the rear wiper control to 1 (intermittent speed),
2 (normal speed) or
o (off). for a rear wash cycle, rotate and hold the rear wiper control to
either
position.
Note: for optimal wiper performance, clean your blades and glass regularly. refer to your
owner’s Guide for more information.
3. panEl DimmEr control – rotate the control up or down to adjust the brightness of the
instrument panel when the headlamps and parking lamps are on. rotate to the full upright
position, past the detent to turn on the interior lights. rotate down past the detent to keep the
interior lights from illuminating when the doors are opened.
4. stEErinG whEEl controls – to set the speed:
1. press on.
2. accelerate to the desired speed.
3. press sEt + and take your foot off the accelerator.
instrumEnt panEl• To set a higher speed, press and hold SET + or press SET + repeatedly until the desired
speed is reached.
• To set a lower speed, press and hold SET – or press SET – repeatedly until the desired speed
is reached.
• To return to a previously set speed, press RES.
• To turn off, depress the brake pedal or press OFF.
VOL +/- : press to increase/decrease volume levels.
: press to access the previous/next radio station, cD track or preset satellite radio channel.
MEDIA: press repeatedly to access all possible media sources.
: press to access voice recognition, if equipped.
: press to access sYnc® phone features, if equipped.
5. sErVicE EnGinE soon liGht –
the service engine soon light illuminates briefly when the
ignition is turned on. if it remains on or is blinking after the engine is started, the on Board
Diagnostics system (oBD-ii) has detected a malfunction. Drive in a moderate fashion and contact
your authorized dealer as soon as possible.
6. mEssaGE cEntEr – (if equipped) the message center, displays important information through
a constant monitoring of vehicle systems. the system will also notify you of potential vehicle
problems with a display of system warnings followed by a long indicator chime. for more
information, please refer to your owner’s Guide.
7. hazarD flashEr
8. aBs warninG liGht – the aBs light
illuminates briefly when the ignition is turned on.
if the aBs light remains on or continues to flash, a malfunction has been detected. contact your
authorized dealer as soon as possible. normal braking (less aBs) is still functional unless the
brake warning light
is also illuminated.
9. aDV ancEtrac
® with roll sta Bilit Y c ontrol™ ( rsc®) sta Bilit Y Enhanc Em Ent s Yst Em –
advancetrac® helps you maintain stability and steerability of your vehicle during a variety of
road conditions. if your vehicle becomes stuck in the snow, mud or sand, try turning off the
advancetrac
® system to allow wheel spin and help increase momentum to dig the vehicle
out. the system defaults to on and the control will illuminate when turned off. refer to your
owner’s Guide for safety information and more details.
10. passEnGEr airBaG off – the passenger airbag off indicator light will illuminate when the
passenger’s front airbag is off. for additional information, please see your owner’s Guide for
safety information and more details.
11. actiVE park assist – (if equipped) the active park assist system can detect an available
parallel parking space and automatically steer the vehicle into that space. the system instructs
the driver with visual and/or audible instructions with regard to braking, accelerating and
shifting gears in order to safely park the vehicle. to initiate active park assist, press the auto
p control and follow the system instructions as prompted by the message center. to stop
the parking procedure, grab the steering wheel or press the control again. for complete
information, please refer to active park assist in the Driving chapter of your owner’s Guide.
12. usB port – (if equipped) the usB port allows you to plug in media playing devices, memory
sticks, and also to charge devices if they support this feature. for more information, please refer
to your sYnc
® supplement or the sYnc® section in your navigation supplement (if equipped). 13.
auxiliarY input Jack – the auxiliary input jack provides a way to connect your portable
music player to the in-vehicle audio system. this allows the audio from a portable music
player to be played through the vehicle speakers. for more information, please see your
owner’s Guide.
rEVErsE sEnsinG – (if equipped) the reverse sensing system may warn you if there is an object
behind the vehicle. the system will sound a warning tone that increases in frequency as the
object gets closer and will sound continuously when the object is less than 10 inches away. the
system is active when the vehicle is in r (reverse) and traveling less than 3 mph (5 km/h). Note:
Visibility aids do not replace the need to watch where the vehicle is moving. refer to your
owner’s Guide for safety information, more details and limitations.
oVErDriVE control/cancEl with GraDE assist – (if equipped) Drive with the vehicle in
overdrive (D) for the best fuel economy. You can deactivate overdrive by pressing the
transmission control switch on the side of the shift handle. Your vehicle is equipped with a
special grade assist feature which is automatically activated when overdrive is turned off. Grade
assist helps to provide optimal gear selection and additional engine braking on hilly terrain. it
is recommended that you return to/D (overdrive) once you return to flat terrain. to return to
overdrive, simply press the transmission control switch again.
powEr siDE ViEw mirrors – rotate the control clockwise to adjust the right mirror, and
counterclockwise to adjust the left mirror. then move the control in the direction you wish to
tilt the mirror. return to the center position to lock the mirror in place.
four-whEEl DriVE (4wD) sYstEm – (if equipped) Your vehicle may be equipped with an
intelligent 4wD system that continuously monitors vehicle conditions and automatically adjusts
the power distribution between the front and rear wheels. the 4wD system is always active,
requires no input and is capable of handling many road conditions, including street and highway
driving as well as off-road and winter driving.

a. on/off/Vol – press to turn on or off.
turn to increase or decrease the volume.
B. DirEct – press DirEct and then, using the
memory presets (0-9), enter in the numbers
of the desired station, track, mp3 folder (if

activate/deactivate full automatic operation.
the system will automatically determine fan
speed, airflow distribution, a/c on or off and
either outside or recirculated air to heat or
cool the vehicle to reach the desired temperature.
turn to increase/decrease the temperature
on the driver side of the vehicle. Note: this
control will also determine the temperature
for the entire vehicle cabin when the
passenger temperature control (pass tEmp)
is not engaged.
B. floor anD DEfrost
– Distributes
air through the windshield defroster vents,
demister vents, floor vents and rear seat
floor vents.
c. DEfrost – Distributes outside air
through the windshield defroster vents and
demister vents. can be used to clear the
windshield of fog and thin ice.
D. DriVEr hEatED sEat
– press to activate
or deactivate the driver heated seat.
E. rEar DEfrostEr
– press to clear the
rear window of thin ice and fog. press again
to deactivate. the rear window defroster will
turn off automatically after a predetermined
amount of time, if a low battery condition is
detected, or when the ignition is turned off
or to the accessory position.
f. a/c – press to activate/deactivate air
conditioning. use with recirculated air
to
improve cooling performance and efficiency. G.
max a/c – press to distribute recirculated
air through the instrument panel vents to cool
the vehicle. this mode is more economical
and efficient. press again to return to normal
a/c operation.
h. rEcirculatED air
– press to
activate/deactivate air circulatiosee
loofereithern inside the vehicle cabin.
recirculated air may reduce
the amount of time needed to cool down
the vehicle and may also help reduce
undesirable odors from entering the vehicle.
recirculated air engages automatically when
max a/c is selected.

again to deactivate (the driver side settings
will then determine the temperature for the
entire vehicle cabin).
