\bYBRID OP ER AT IONTh e Ford Escape \bybrid isawhole newkind ofSUV that
co m bines electric and gasol ine propulsi onwithout compromise, toprovide breakthrough
perfor manc eand efficienc y.It requires nospecial fuelsandnever hastobe plugged in.
Familiarizing yourself with these unique characteristics willhelp ensure optimal performance
from your newvehicle.
NORM A\fVE\bIC\fE OPERATION
St ar ting –Tur nthe igniti onkey to the START position while thevehicle isin P(Park). Thegas
engine will tur non, acco mpani edbythe green “ready indicator” light.Yourengine mayshut off
shortly after star ting, dependi ngontemperature andbattery chargelevel.Thisisanatural part
ofthe Escape \bybrid’s fuelsavingfeatures. The“ready indicator” light willstay onand youdo
notneed tores tart the vehic le.Note: Youmay notice higher engine speedsuponstartup. This
temporarycondi tion isnor mal an dnecessary toheat upthe cabin foroccupant comfort.
Driving –The gasengine automatically startsandstops toprovide powerwhenit’sneeded and
tosave fuel when it’snot. Whilecoasting atlow speeds, coming toastop orstanding, thegas
engine normally shuts downand thevehicle operates inelectriconly mode.Conditionsthat
cau se the engine tostar tup orre mai nrunning include:
Driver reques tfor moderat eto rapid acceleration
Vehicle speed above 40mph (65 km/h)
Ascending ahill
EC ON mode notselected (whil ethe climat econtrol ison)
Selec tion ofclim ate contr oldefrost modeordefrost/floor mode
Charge level ofhigh voltage battery is low
Ver yhigh orlow outsi detem perature (toprovide systemcooling/heating)
Stopping –The gasengi nemay shut offasyou come toastop toconserve fuel.Restarting the
vehicle isnot required. Sim plyste pon the accelerator whenyouareready todrive.
Trans mission Operati on–Due tothe technologically advanced, electronically controlled
Continuous lyVar iable Trans axle (eCVT) youwillnotfeel shiftchanges likethose ofanonhybrid
veh icle. Your FordEscape \bybr id’s transmission isdesigned todo itswork seamlessly. Sinc eyour
en gine speed iscontrolle dby the transmission, itmay seem elevated attimes. Thisisnormal
hyb rid oper ation and helps del ive rfuel efficiency andperformance.
Neutral –It is not recommended toidle inN(Neutral) forextended periodsoftime because this
willdischar geyour highvoltage battery anddecrease fueleconomy. Also, theengine cannot
provide power to the hybr id sys tem inN.
\fow Gear –(\f) \fow gear is desi gned tomimic theenhanced enginebraking available innon
hyb rid vehic les.On long downhillgrades, \fowgear mayresult inhigh engine speedstoprovide
nec essar yengine braking. Thisis normal andwillnotdamage yourvehicle. Response during
acceler ation should bethe sam eas in (D) Drive position.
Rever se –(R) Reverse Gearvehicle speed islimited to22 mph (35km/h).
UNIQUE \bYBRIDOPERATING C\b ARACTERISTICS
Yo ur For dEs cape \bybrid ,w it h its new technology, behavesdiffe rentl ycompared toanonhybrid
veh icle. Ades cription ofthe major differences follows:Battery–Your FordEscape \bybrid isequipped withahigh voltage batterycooling systeminthe
rear ofthe vehicle. Acool battery ensures batterylifeand provides the best po ss ib le perf o rm anc e.
Your hybrid highvoltage batterymayperiodicall yrec ondi tion itsel fto ensure maximum
effic ienc y.You may notic eslight changes indrivability duringthisproc ess, butit’sanimportant
part ofyour FordEscape \bybrid’s highvoltage batteryopti mizati onfeatures. Youmay hear a
series ofclic ks from thecargo areawhen youfirst turn thekey in the ig nition. Thissound isthe
hig h voltage contac torsclosing toallow youtostart yourhybrid.
In addition, youmay hear fannoiseand aslight tappingsound fromtherear asthe vent door
operates. Thisfan may conti nuetooperate forshort durati onsafter thevehicle hasbeen turned
off. These noises are acustomary partofhybrid operati onand donot require service.
En gine –The engine speedin your hybrid isnot direc tly tied toyour vehicle speed.Yourvehicle’s
en gine and transmission aredesigned todeli ver the power youneed atthe most efficient
en gine speed. During heavyaccel erations, yourhybrid mayreachhigh engine speeds (upto
6000 RPM ).This isacharac teristic ofthe Atkinson cycleengine technol ogyhelping tomaximize
yo ur hybrid’s fueleconomy. Inprolonged mountainousdriving, you mayalso seethe engine
tachometer changing withoutyourinput. Thisisinte ntional andmaintains thebattery charge
level. Youmay alsonotic eduring extendeddownhill driving that your engine continues torun
in stead ofshutting off.During this“engi nebraking ,” the engi nestays on, but it’snot using any
fuel. You may alsohear asli ght whine orwhistle whenoperati ngyour vehicle. Thisisthe normal
operation ofthe electricgenerator inthe hybrid system.
Braking –Your hybrid is equipped withstandard hydraulicbraking andregenerative braking.
Reg enerative brakingisperformed byyour transmission andit captures brakeenergy andstores
it in the high voltage battery. Youmay hear apumpin gsound whenyouunlock orenter the
veh icle and aventing soundafew minutes aftershutting offthe vehi cle. This isthe hydraulic
portion ofyour regenerative brakingsystemcharging anddischargi ng.
Driving toOptimize FuelEconomy –Your fueleconomy shouldimprove throughout your
hyb rid’s breakin period.Aswith anyvehicle, fueleconomy can besignificantly impactedbyyour
driving habits andaccessory usage. Forbest results, keepin mi nd these tips:
Tire inflati on–Keep tires properl yinfl ated and useonly therecommen dedsize.
Climate Control –Your hybrid isequipped withanECO Nbutton thatoffers amore fueleffic ient
operation ofyour automatic temperature controlsystem. Whenactivated, theECON feature
allo ws the engine toshut down atlow speeds orwhe nyour vehicle is stopped. Ifcooler
tem perature isdesired, theECON button canbeturn edoff, forbetter interior coolingbutlower
fuel economy. ECONmodeturnsitselfoffwhen yousel ect defrost ordefrost/floor mode.
Driver \babits –Aggressive driving increases theamou ntof energy required tomove your
veh icle. In general, betterfueleconomy is achieved with mild to moder ateacceleration and
dec eleration. Moderate brakingisparticularly importantsinceit al lows youtomaximize the
en ergy captured bythe regenerative brakingsystem.Note:\bavingyour engine running isnot
alw ays anindic ation ofineffic iency–in some casesitis ac tual ly more efficient thandriving in
elec tric mode.
Additional Tips –
Do not carry extra loads.
Be mindful ofadding external accessories thatmay inc rease aerodyna micdrag.
Observe posted speedlimits.
Perform allscheduled maintenanc e.
Th ere isno need towait foryour engine to"warm up.
" The vehicle is ready todrive
im mediately afterstarting.

9. B ATTERY GAUGE–The battery gaugeprovides information aboutyourvehicle’s energy usage.
When the pointer isdirected atASSIST, thismeans thebattery isproviding extrapower toboost
th e vehicle’s acceleration. Whenit’spointing toC\bARGE, extraenergy isbeing stored inthe
battery whileidling, coasting orslowing down.Whenyoupress thebrake pedal, thepointer
