Driving your vehicle
1. Press the shiftlock release button.
2. Press and hold the lock release button on the shift lever.
3. Move the shift lever.
4. Have your vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer immediately
Parking
Always come to a complete stop and
continue to depress the brake pedal.
Move the shift lever into the P (Park)
position, apply the parking brake,
and place the ignition switch in the
LOCK/OFF position. Take the Key
with you when exiting the vehicle.
Good driving practices
• Never move the shift lever from P(Park) or N (Neutral) to any other
position with the accelerator pedaldepressed.
• Never move the shift lever into P (Park) when the vehicle is in
motion.
Be sure the vehicle is completely
stopped before you attempt to shift
into R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
• Do not move the shift lever to N (Neutral) when driving. Doing so
may result in an accident because
of a loss of engine braking and the
transaxle could be damaged.
• Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. Even light, but
consistent pedal pressure can
result in the brakes overheating,
brake wear and possibly even
brake failure.
• Depressing both accelerator and brake pedals at the same time can
trigger logic for engine power
reduction to assure vehicle decel
eration. Vehicle acceleration will
resume after the brake pedal isreleased.
When you stay in the vehicle with
the engine running, be careful not
to depress the accelerator pedal
for a long period of time. The
engine or exhaust system may
overheat and start a fire.
The exhaust gas and the exhaust
system are very hot. Keep away
from the exhaust system compo
nents.
Do not stop or park over flamma
ble materials, such as dry grass,
paper or leaves. They may ignite
and cause a fire.

ESC OFF condition
This vehicle has 2 kinds of
ESC off states.
If the engine stops when
ESC is off, ESC remains off.
Upon restarting the engine,
the ESC will automatically
turn on again. To cancel ESC operation :
• State 1
Press the ESC OFF button shortly
(ESC OFF indicator light and mes
sage illuminates). At this state, the
engine control function does not
operate. The traction control function
does not operate but only the brake
control function operates.
• State 2
Press the ESC OFF button for more
than 3 seconds. ESC OFF indicator
light will illuminate.
At this state, the engine control func
tion and brake control function does
not operate. The vehicle stability con
trol function does not operate any
more.
Indicator lights
When the ignition switch is pressed
to the ON position, the ESC indicator
light illuminates, then goes off if the
ESC system is operating normally.
The ESC indicator light blinks when
ever the ESC is operating.
If ESC indicator light stays on, your
vehicle may have a malfunction with
the ESC system. When this warning
light illuminates we recommend that
the vehicle be checked by an author
ized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as
possible.

VSM OFF condition
To cancel VSM operation, press the
ESC OFF button. ESC OFF indicator
light ( ) will illuminate.
To turn on VSM, press the ESC OFF
button again. The ESC OFF indicator
light will go out. Driving with wheels and tires with dif
ferent sizes may cause the ESC sys
tem to malfunction. Before replacing
tires, make sure all four tires and
wheels are the same size. Never
drive the vehicle with different sized
tires and wheels installed.
HillStart Assist Control (HAC)
(if equipped)
A vehicle has the tendency to slide
backwards on a steep slope, before
depressing the accelerator after a
stop. The HAC prevents the vehicle
from sliding backwards by automati
cally operating the brake systems for
about 2 seconds. The brake systems
are automatically released, when the
accelerator pedal is depressed
Information
• The HAC does not operate when the shift lever is in P (Park) or N
(Neutral)
• The HAC activates even when the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) is
off. However, it does not activate,
when the ESC does not normallyoperate.i

If ESC indicator light () or EPS
warning light () stays on, your
vehicle may have a malfunction
with the VSM system. When the
warning light illuminates we rec
ommend that the vehicle be
checked by an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer as soon as pos
sible.
WARNING
The HAC is activated only for
about 2 seconds, so always
depress the accelerator pedal to
begin driving upwards after a stop.

If the engine stalls while driving
• Reduce your speed gradually, keeping a straight line. Move cau
tiously off the road to a safe place.
• Turn on your hazard warning flash er.
• Try to start the engine again. If your vehicle will not start, we recom
mend that you contact an author
ized HYUNDAI dealer.
If the engine stalls at a cross
road or crossing
If the engine stalls at a crossroad or
crossing, if safe to do so, move the
shift lever to the N (Neutral) position
and then push the vehicle to a safelocation.
• If your vehicle has a manualtransaxle not equipped with a igni
tion lock switch, the vehicle can
move forward by shifting to the
2(second) or 3(third) gear and then
turning the starter without depress
ing the clutch pedal.
If you have a flat tire while driv
ing
If a tire goes flat while you are driv ing:
• Take your foot off the accelerator pedal and let the vehicle slow
down while driving straight ahead.
Do not apply the brakes immedi
ately or attempt to pull off the road
as this may cause loss of vehicle
control resulting in an accident.
When the vehicle has slowed to
such a speed that it is safe to do
so, brake carefully and pull off the
road. Drive off the road as far as
possible and park on firm, level
ground. If you are on a divided
highway, do not park in the median
area between the two traffic lanes.
• When the vehicle is stopped, press the hazard warning flasher button,
move the shift lever into P (Park,
for automatic transaxle vehicle) or
neutral (for manual transaxle vehi
cle), apply the parking brake, and
place the ignition switch in theLOCK/OFF position. • Have all passengers get out of the
vehicle. Be sure they all get out on
the side of the vehicle that is away
from traffic.
• When changing a flat tire, follow the instructions provided later in
this chapter.
