Starting the diesel engine
To start the diesel engine when the
engine is cold\b it has to be preheat
ed before starting the engine and
then have to be warmed up before
starting to drive.
Vehicle with manual transaxle:
1.Make sure the parking brake isapplied.
2.Make sure the shift lever is in neu tral.
3.Depress the clutch and brake ped als.
4.Turn the ignition switch to the ON position to preheat the engine.
The glow indicator light ( ) will
illuminate.
5.When the glow indicator light ( ) goes out\b turn the key ignition
switch to the START position. Hold
the key (maximum of 1\f seconds)
until the engine starts and release
it. Information
If the engine does not start within 10
seconds after preheating is completed,
turn the ignition switch once more to
the LOCK position and wait for 10
seconds\b Then turn the ignition switch
to the ON position in order to preheat
the engine again\b
Starting and stopping the engine
for turbocharger intercooler
1.Do not race or accelerate the engine immediately after starting
the engine.
If the engine is cold\b idle for sever
al seconds before sufficient lubri
cation is ensured in the turbo
charger unit.
2.After high speed or extended driv ing that requires heavy engine
load\b idle the engine about one
minute before turning the engine
off.
This idle time will allow the tur
bocharger to cool prior to shutting
the engine off.
Do not turn off the engine immedi
ately after it has been subjected to a
heavy load. Doing so may cause
severe damage to the engine or
turbo charger unit.

To prevent damage to the vehicle:
• Do not hold the ignition key in theSTART position for more than 1\f
seconds. Wait 5 to 1\f seconds
before trying again.
• Do not turn the ignition switch to the START position with the
engine running. It may damage the
starter.
• If traffic and road conditions per mit\b you may put the shift lever in
the N (Neutral) position while the
vehicle is still moving and turn the
ignition s
witch to the START posi
tion in an attempt to restart the
engine.
• Do not push or tow your vehicle to start the engine.
Engine Start/Stop button
(if equipped)
Whenever the front door is opened\b
the Engine Start/Stop button will illu
minate and will go off 3\f seconds
after the door is closed.

any person who is unfamiliar with
the vehicle to touch the Engine
Start/Stop button or related parts.
Unexpected and sudden vehicle
movement can occur.
WARNING

The indicator in the instrument clus
ter displays the shift lever position
when the ignition switch is in the ON
position.
P (Park)
Always come to a complete stop
before shifting into P (Park).
The shift lever must be in P (Park)
before turning the engine off.
Information
The RPM (revolutions per minute)
may increase or decrease when per
forming the CVT selfdiagnosis\b

•ALWAYS check the surrounding
areas near your vehicle for peo
ple\b especially children\b before
shifting a vehicle into D (Drive)
or R (Reverse).
•Before leaving the driver’s seat\b
always make sure the shift lever
is in the P (Park) position\b then
set the parking brake\b and place
the ignition switch in the
LOCK/OFF position.
Unexpected and sudden vehicle
movement can oc
cur if these
precautions are not followed.
•Do not use engine braking (shift
ing from a high gear to lower
gear) rapidly on slippery roads.
The vehicle may slip causing an
accident.

WARNING

Shiftlock release
If the shift lever cannot be moved
from the P (Park) position into R
(Reverse) position with the brake
pedal depressed\b continue depress
ing the brake\b and then do the follow
ing:1. Press the shiftlock release button.
2. Press and hold the lock release button on the shift lever.
3. Move the shift lever.
4. Have your vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer
immediately
Parking
Always come to a complete stop and
continue to depress the brake pedal.
Move the shift lever into the P (Park)
position\b apply the parking brake\b
and place the ignition switch in the

Good driving practices
• Never move the shift lever from P(Park) or N (Neutral) to any other
position with the accelerator pedal
depressed.
• Never move the shift lever into P (Park) when the vehicle is in
motion.
Be sure the vehicle is completely
stopped before you attempt to shift
into R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
• Do not move the shift lever to N (Neutral) when driving. Doing so
may result in an accident because
of a loss of engine braking and the
transaxle could be damaged.
• Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. Even light\b but
consistent pedal pressure can
result in the brakes overheating\b
brake wear and possibly even
brake failure.
• Depressing both accelerator and brake pedals at the same time can
trigger logic for engine power
reduction to assure vehicle decel
eration. Vehicle acceleration willresume after the brake pedal is
released. • When driving in Manual shift mode\b
slow down before shifting to a
lower gear. Otherwise\b the lower
gear may not be engaged if the
engine rpms are outside of the
allowable range.
• Always apply the parking brake when leaving the vehicle. Do not
depend on placing the transmis
sion in P (Park) to keep the vehicle
from moving.
• Exercise extreme caution when driving on a slippery surface. Be
especially careful when braking\b
accelerating or shifting gears. On a
slippery surface\b an abrupt change
in vehicle speed can cause the
drive wheels to lose traction and
may cause loss of vehicle control
resulting in an accident
• Optimum vehicle performance and economy is obtained by smoothly
depressing and releasing the
accelerator.
When you stay in the vehicle with
the engine running\b be careful not
to depress the accelerator pedal
for a long period of time. The
engine or exhaust system may

To release:
Firmly depress the brake pedal.
Slightly pull up the parking brake
lever.
While pressing the release button
(1)\b lower the parking brake (2).
If the parking brake does not release
or does not release all the way\b we
recommend that the system be
checked by an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer. • Do not apply the accelerator pedal
while the parking brake is
engaged. If you depress the accel
erator pedal with the parking brake
engaged\b warning will sound.
Damage to the parking brake may
occur.
• Driving with the parking brake on can overheat the braking system
and cause premature wear or
damage to brake parts. Make sure
the parking brake is released and
the Brake Warning Light is off
before driving.

•Whenever leaving the vehicle or
parking\b always come to a com
plete stop and continue to
depress the brake pedal. Move
the shift lever into the 1st gear
(for Manual Transaxle vehicle)
or P (Park) position (for
Automatic Transaxle/

the parking brake\b and place the
ignition switch in the LOCK/OFF
position.
Vehicles with the parking brake
not fully engaged are at ris
k for
moving inadvertently and caus
ing injury to yourself or others.
•NEVER allow anyone who is
unfamiliar with the vehicle to
touch the parking brake. If the
parking brake is released unin
tentionally\b serious injury may
occur.
•Only release the parking brake
when you are seated inside the
vehicle with your foot firmly on
the brake pedal.

Brake Warning Light by
placing the ignition
switch to the ON posi
tion (do not start the
engine).
This light will be illuminated when the
parking brake is applied with the igni
tion switch in the START or ON posi
tion.
Before driving\b be sure the parking
brake is released and the Brake
Warning Light is OFF. If the Parking Brake Warning Light
remains on after the parking brake is
released while engine is running\b
there may be a malfunction in the
brake system. Immediate attention is
necessary.
If at all possible\b cease driving the
vehicle immediately. If that is not pos
sible\b use extreme caution while
operating the vehicle and only con
tinue to drive the vehicle until you
can reach a safe location.

When using tire chains:
• Wrong size chains or improperlyinstalled chains can damage your
vehicle's brake lines\b suspension\b
body and wheels.
• Use SAE “S” class or wire chains.
• If you hear noise caused by chains contacting the body\b retighten the
chain to prevent contact with the
vehicle body.
• To prevent body damage\b retighten the chains after driving \f.5~1.\f km
(\f.3~\f.6 miles).
• Do not use tire chains on vehic
les
equipped with aluminum wheels. If
unavoidable\b use a wire type
chain.
• Use wire chains less than 15 mm (\f.59 in) wide to prevent damage
to the chain’s connection.
Winter precautions
Use high quality ethylene glycolcoolant
Your vehicle is delivered with high
quality ethylene glycol coolant in the
cooling system. It is the only type of
coolant that should be used because
it helps prevent corrosion in the cool
ing system\b lubricates the water
pump and prevents freezing. Be sure
to replace or replenish your coolant
in accordance with the maintenance
schedule in chapter 7. Before winter\b
have your coolant tested to assure
that its freezing point is sufficient for
the temperatures anticipated during
the winter.
Check battery and cables
Winter puts additional burdens on
the battery system. Visually inspect
the battery and cables as described
in chapter 7. The level of charge in
your battery can be checked by an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer or a
service station.
Change to "winter weight" oil if necessary
In some climates it is recommended
that a lower viscosity "winter weight"
oil be used during cold weather. See
chapter 8 for recommendations. If
you aren't sure what weight oil you
should use\b we recommend that you
consult with an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer.
Check spark plugs and ignition system
Inspect your spark plugs as
described in chapter 7 and replace
them if necessary. Also check all
ignition wiring and components to be
sure they are not cracked\b worn or
damaged in any way.

The hazard warning flasher serves
as a warning to other drivers to exer-
cise extreme caution when
approaching, overtaking, or passing
your vehicle.
It should be used whenever emer-
gency repairs are being made or
when the vehicle is stopped near the
edge of a roadway.
To turn the hazard warning flasher
on or off, press the hazard warning
flasher button with the ignition switch
in any position. The button is located
in the center console switch panel. All turn signal lights will flash simul-
taneously.
• The hazard warning flasher oper-
ates whether your vehicle is run-
ning or not.
• The turn signals do not work when the hazard flasher is on.""
