Good driving practices
• Never move the shift lever from P(Park) or N (Neutral) to any other
position with the accelerator pedal
depressed.
• Never move the shift lever into P (Park) when the vehicle is in
motion.
Be sure the vehicle is completely
stopped before you attempt to shift
into R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
• Do not move the shift lever to N (Neutral) when driving. Doing so
may result in an accident because
of a loss of engine braking and the
transaxle could be damaged.
• Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake pedal. Even light\b but
consistent pedal pressure can
result in the brakes overheating\b
brake wear and possibly even
brake failure.
• Depressing both accelerator and brake pedals at the same time can
trigger logic for engine power
reduction to assure vehicle decel
eration. Vehicle acceleration willresume after the brake pedal is
released. • When driving in Manual shift mode\b
slow down before shifting to a
lower gear. Otherwise\b the lower
gear may not be engaged if the
engine rpms are outside of the
allowable range.
• Always apply the parking brake when leaving the vehicle. Do not
depend on placing the transmis
sion in P (Park) to keep the vehicle
from moving.
• Exercise extreme caution when driving on a slippery surface. Be
especially careful when braking\b
accelerating or shifting gears. On a
slippery surface\b an abrupt change
in vehicle speed can cause the
drive wheels to lose traction and
may cause loss of vehicle control
resulting in an accident
• Optimum vehicle performance and economy is obtained by smoothly
depressing and releasing the
accelerator.

Power brakes
Your vehicle has powerassisted
brakes that adjust automatically
through normal usage.
If the engine is not running or is
turned off while driving\b the power
assist for the brakes will not work.
You can still stop your vehicle by
applying greater force to the brake
pedal than typical. The stopping dis
tance\b however\b will be longer than
with power brakes.
When the engine is not running\b the
reser ve brake power is par tially
depleted each time the brake pedal
is applied. Do not pump the brake
pedal when the power assist has
been interrupted.
Pump the brake pedal only when
necessary to maintain steering con
trol on slippery surfaces.

Take the following precautions:
•Do not drive with your foot rest
ing on the brake pedal. This will
create abnormal high brake tem
peratures\b excessive brake lin
ing and pad wear\b and
increased stopping distances.
•When descending a long or
steep hill\b shift to a lower gear
and avoid continuous applica
tion of the brakes. Applying the
brakes continuously will cause
the brakes to overheat and
could result in a temporary
loss
of braking performance.

•Wet brakes may impair the vehi
cle’s ability to safely slow down;
the vehicle may also pull to one
side when the brakes are
applied. Applying the brakes
lightly will indicate whether they
have been affected in this way.
Always test your brakes in this
fashion after driving through
deep water. To dry the brakes\b
lightly tap the brake pedal to
heat up the brakes while main
taining a safe forward speed
until brak
e performance returns
to normal. Avoid driving at high
speeds until the brakes function
correctly.

Hazardous driving conditions
When hazardous driving conditions
are encountered such as water\b
snow\b ice\b mud or sand:
Drive cautiously and allow extra dis
tance for braking.
Avoid sudden movements in braking
or steering.
If stuck in snow\b mud\b or sand\b use
second gear. Accelerate slowly to
avoid spinning the drive wheels.
Use sand\b rock salt\b or other nonslip
material under the drive wheels to
provide traction when stalled in ice\b
snow\b or mud.
Rocking the vehicle
If it is necessary to rock the vehicle
to free it from snow\b sand\b or mud\b
first turn the steering wheel right and
left to clear the area around your
front wheels. Then\b shift back and
forth between 1st and R (Reverse\b
for Manual Transaxle vehicle) or R
(Reverse) and a forward gear (for
Automatic Transaxle/Continuously
Variable Transaxle vehicle). Try to
avoid spinning the wheels\b and do
not race the engine.
To prevent transaxle wear\b wait until
the wheels stop spinning before
shifting gears. Release the accelera
tor pedal while shifting\b and press
lightly on the accelerator pedal while
the transaxle is in gear. Slowly spin
ning the wheels in forward and
reverse directions causes a rocking
motion that may free the vehicle. If the tires spin at high speed the
tires can explode\b and you or others
may be injured. Do not attempt this
procedure if people or objects are
anywhere near the vehicle.
The vehicle can overheat causing an
engine compartment fire or other
damage. Spin the wheels as little as
possible and avoid spinning the
wheels at speeds over 5
6 k
m/h (35
mph) as indicated on the speedome
ter.
If you are still stuck after rocking the
vehicle a few times\b have the vehicle
pulled out by a tow vehicle to avoid
engine overheating\b possible dam
age to the transaxle\b and tire dam
age. See “Towing” in chapter 6.

NOTICE
Downshifting with an Automatic
Transaxle/ Continuously Variable
Transaxle\b while driving on slippery
surfaces can cause an accident.
The sudden change in tire speed
could cause the tires to skid. Be
careful when downshifting on slip
pery surfaces.
WARNING

To keep locks from freezing
To keep the locks from freezing\b
squirt an approved deicer fluid or
glycerine into the key opening. If a
lock is covered with ice\b squirt it with
an approved deicing fluid to remove
the ice. If the lock is frozen internally\b
you may be able to thaw it out by
using a heated key. Handle the heat
ed key with care to avoid injury.
Use approved window washerantifreeze in system
To keep the water in the window
washer system from freezing\b add an
approved window washer antifreeze
solution in accordance with instruc
tions on the container. Window wash
er antifreeze is available from an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer and
most auto parts outlets. Do not use
engine coolant or other types of anti
freeze as these may damage the
paint finish.
Don't let your parking brake freeze
Under some conditions your parking
brake can freeze in the engaged
position. This is most likely to hap
pen when there is an accumulation
of snow or ice around or near the
rear brakes or if the brakes are wet.
If there is a risk the parking brake
may freeze\b apply it only temporarily
while you put the shift lever in P (for
Automatic Transaxle/Continuously
Variable Transaxle) or in first or
reverse gear (for Manual Transaxle)
and block the rear wheels so the
vehicle cannot roll. Then release the
parking brake.
Don't let ice and snow accumulate underneath
Under some conditions\b snow and
ice can build up under the fenders
and interfere with the steering. When
driving in severe winter conditions
where this may happen\b you should
periodically check underneath the
car to be sure the movement of the
front wheels and the steering com
ponents is not obstructed.
Carry emergency equipment
Depending on the severity of the
weather\b you should carry appropri
ate emergency equipment. Some of
the items you may want to carry
include tire chains\b tow straps or
chains\b flashlight\b emergency flares\b
sand\b shovel\b jumper cables\b window
scraper\b gloves\b ground cloth\b cover
alls\b blanket\b etc.
Don't place foreign objects or materials in the engine compartment
Placement of foreign objects or
materials which prevent cooling of
the engine\b in the engine compart
ment\b may cause a failure or com
bustion. The manufacturer is not
responsible for the damage caused
by such placement.

EEmergency towing If towing is necessary, we recom-
mend you have it done by an author-
ized HYUNDAI dealer or a commer-
cial tow truck service. If towing service is not available in an
emergency, your vehicle may be
temporarily towed using a cable or
chain secured to the emergency tow-
ing hook at the front (or rear) of the
vehicle.
Use extreme caution when towing
the vehicle with a cable or chain. A
driver must be in the vehicle to steer
it and operate the brakes.
Towing in this manner may be done
only on hard-surfaced roads for a
short distance and at low speeds.
Also, the wheels, axles, power train,
steering and brakes must all be in
good condition. Always follow these emergency tow-
ing precautions:
• Place the ignition switch in the
ACC position so the steering
wheel is not locked.
• Place the shift lever in N (Neutral).
• Release the parking brake.
• Depress the brake pedal with more force than normal since you will
have reduced braking perform-
ance.
• More steering effort will be required because the power steer-
ing system will be disabled.
• Use a vehicle heavier than your own to tow your vehicle.
• The drivers of both vehicles should communicate with each other fre-
quently.
• Before emergency towing, check that the hook is not broken or dam-
aged.
• Fasten the towing cable or chain securely to the hook.
• Do not jerk the hook. Apply steady and even force.

to help ensure safe, dependable
operation of your vehicle.
Any adverse conditions should be
brought to the attention of your deal-
er as soon as possible.
These Owner Maintenance Checks
are generally not covered by war-
ranties and you may be charged for
labor, parts and lubricants used.
Owner maintenance schedule When you stop for fuel:• Check the engine oil level.
• Check the coolant level in coolant
reservoir.
• Check the windshield washer fluid level.
• Look for low or under-inflated tires.
• Check the radiator and condenser. Check if the front of the radiator
and condenser are clean and not
blocked with leaves, dirt or insects
etc.
If any of the above parts areextremely dirty or you are not sure
of their condition, we recommend
that you contact an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer.
While operating your vehicle:• Note any changes in the sound of the exhaust or any smell of
exhaust fumes in the vehicle.
• Check for vibrations in the steering wheel. Notice any increased steer-
ing effort or looseness in the steer-
ing wheel, or change in its straight-
ahead position.
• Notice if your vehicle constantly turns slightly or "pulls" to one side
when traveling on smooth, level
road.
• When stopping, listen and check for unusual sounds, pulling to one
side, increased brake pedal travel
or "hard-to-push" brake pedal.
• If any slipping or changes in the operation of your transaxle occurs,
check the transaxle fluid level.
• Check Continuously Variable Transaxle P (Park) function.
• Check the parking brake.
• Check for fluid leaks under your vehicle (water dripping from the air
conditioning system during or after
use is normal).

Be careful when checking your
engine coolant level when the
engine is hot. Scalding hot coolant
and stea m may blow out under
pressure. This could cause burns
or other serious injury.

including the parking brake pedal
and cables. Brake discs, pads, calipers and
rotorsCheck the pads for excessive wear,
discs for run out and wear, and

Steering gear box, linkage &

With the vehicle stopped and engine
off, check for excessive free-play in
the steering wheel.
Check the linkage for bends or dam-
age. Check the dust boots and ball
joints for deterioration, cracks, or damage. Replace any damaged
parts.
Drive shafts and bootsCheck the drive shafts, boots and
clamps for cracks, deterioration, or
damage. Replace any damaged
parts and, if necessary, repack the
grease.Air conditioning refrigerant

WWheel alignment and tire bal-
ance The wheels on your vehicle were
aligned and balanced carefully at the
factory to give you the longest tire life
and best overall performance.
In most cases, you will not need to
have your wheels aligned again.
However, if you notice unusual tire
wear or your vehicle pulling one way
or the other, the alignment may need
to be reset.
If you notice your vehicle vibrating
when driving on a smooth road, your
wheels may need to be rebalanced.Improper wheel weights can damage
your vehicle's aluminum wheels. Use
only approved wheel weights.
Tire replacementIf the tire is worn evenly, a tread wear
indicator will appear as a solid band
across the tread. This shows there is
less than 1.6 mm (1/16 inch) of tread
left on the tire. Replace the tire when
this happens.
Do not wait for the band to appear
across the entire tread before replac-
ing the tire.
When replacing the tires, recheck
and tighten the wheel nuts after driv-
ing about 1,000 km (620miles). If the
steering wheel shakes or the vehicle
vibrates while driving, the tire is out
of balance. Align t he tire balance. If
the problem is not solved, we recom- mend that you contact an authorizedHYUNDAI dealer.NOTICE

Replacing tires
