4-2. Driving procedures
in the following conditions:
●The driver’s door is not closed.
●The driver is not wearing the seat belt.
●“EPB Activation Stopped Incompletely” or “EPB Malfunction Visit Your dealer” is displayed on the multi-information dis-
play.
If any of the conditions above are detected
when the brake hold system is enabled, the system will turn off and the brake hold standby indicator light will go off. In addi-
tion, if any of the conditions are detected while the system is holding the brake, a warning buzzer will sound and a message
will be shown on the multi-information dis- play. The parking brake will then be set automatically.
■Brake hold function
●If the brake pedal is left released for a period of about 3 minutes after the sys-
tem has started holding the brake, the parking brake will be set automatically. In this case, a warning buzzer sounds and a
message is shown on the multi-informa- tion display.
●To turn the system off while the system is holding the brake, firmly depress the
brake pedal and press the button again.
●The brake hold function may not hold the
vehicle when the vehicle is on a steep incline. In this situation, it may be neces-sary for the driver to apply the brakes. A
warning buzzer will sound and the multi- information display will inform the driver of this situation. ( P.378)
■When the parking brake is set automati-
cally while the system is holding the brakes
The parking brake will not be released auto- matically. Perform one of the following pro-cedures to release the parking brake and
confirm that the parking brake indicator light turns off. ( P.187)
●With the brake pedal depressed, operate the parking brake switch.
●Fasten your seat belt, check that the shift position is in either D or R and slowly depress the accelerator pedal.
■If “Brake Hold Unavailable” is shown on the multi-information display
The brake hold system cannot be used. The reason the brake hold system is not avail-able (the driver’s door opens, the driver’s
seat belt is unfasten, or the hood or trunk opens) may be displayed. Use the brake hold system when it becomes available.
■Warning message and buzzers
Warning messages and buzzers are used to indicate a system malfunction or to inform
the driver of the need for caution. ( P.378)
WARNING
■When the vehicle is on a steep incline
When using the brake hold system on a
steep incline exercise caution. The brake hold function may not hold the vehicle in such a situation.
■When the vehicle is stopped on a slip-
pery road
The system cannot stop the vehicle when
the gripping ability of the tires has been exceeded. Do not use the system when the vehicle is stopped on a slippery road.
NOTICE
■When parking the vehicle
The brake hold system is not designed for use when parking the vehicle for a
long period of time. Turning the engine switch <power switch > off while the sys- tem is holding the brake may release the
brake, which would cause the vehicle to move. When operating the engine switch <power switch>, depress the brake pedal,
set the parking brake and shift the shift position to P.

●Vehicle speed is at or above approxi-
mately 50 km/h (30 mph). However, when a preceding vehicle is detected, the dynamic radar cruise con-
trol with full-speed range can be set even if the vehicle speed is below approxi-mately 50 km/h (30 mph).
■Accelerating after setting the vehicle
speed
The vehicle can accelerate by operating the
accelerator pedal. After accelerating, the set speed resumes. Ho wever, during vehi- cle-to-vehicle distance control mode, the
vehicle speed may decrease below the set speed in order to maintain the distance to the preceding vehicle.
■When the vehicle stops while follow-up
cruising
●Pressing the +/RES switch while the vehi-
cle ahead stops will resume follow-up cruising if the vehicle ahead starts off within approximately 3 seconds after the
switch is pressed.
●If the vehicle ahead starts off within 3 sec-
onds after your vehicle stops, follow-up cruising will be resumed.
■Automatic cancelation of vehicle-to-
vehicle distance control mode
Vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode is
automatically canceled in the following situ- ations.
●Actual vehicle speed falls below approxi-mately 40 km/h (25 mph) when there are no vehicles ahead.
●The preceding vehicle leaves the lane when your vehicle is following at a vehicle
speed below approximately 40 km/h (25 mph). Otherwise, the sensor can not properly detect the vehicle. (“CRUISE
NOT AVAILABLE No Preceding Vehi- cles” is displayed on the multi-information display.)
●VSC is activated.
●TRC is activated for a period of time.
●When the VSC or TRC system is turned
off.
●When snow mode is set.
●The sensor cannot detect correctly
because it is covered in some way.
●Pre-collision brakin g is activated.
●The parking brake is operated.
●The vehicle is stopped by system control on a steep incline.
●The following are detected when the vehicle has been stopped by system con-trol:
• The driver is not wearing a seat belt. • The driver’s door is opened.• The vehicle has been stopped for about 3
minutes
If vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode
is automatically canceled for any other rea-
son, there may be a malfunction in the sys-
tem. Contact any authorized Lexus retailer
or Lexus authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.
■Automatic cancelation of constant speed control mode
Constant speed control mode is automati- cally canceled in the following situations:

●Please drive safely. The function of this system is to assist
you in making the Emergency Call in case of accidents as traffic accidents or sudden medical emergencies, and it
does not protect the driver or the pas- sengers in any way. Please drive safely and fasten your seatbelts at all times
for your safety.
●In case of an emergency, make lives the top priority.
●If you smell anything burning or another unusual smell, do not stay
inside the vehicle and evacuate to a safe area immediately.
●Since the system detects shocks, the automatic reporting may not always
occur synchronized with the operation of the airbag system. (If the vehicle is bumped from behind, etc.)
●The airbag may not inflate even in case
of an accident, if it does not involve high impact. In such cases, the system may not make emergency calls auto-
matically. The system may also not make automatic emergency calls even if the airbag has been inflated. If any of
these should occur, please report to the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) by operating the “SOS” but-
ton.
●For safety, do not make the Emergency Call while driving.
Making calls during driving may cause mishandling of th e steering wheel, which may lead to unexpected acci-
dents. Stop the vehicle and confirm the safety of the area before making the Emer-
gency Call.
●When changing fuses, please use fuses that correspond to the described stan-dard.
If you use fuses other than those described, it may cause ignition or smoke in the circuit and may lead to a
fire.
●Using the system while there is smoke or an unusual smell may cause a fire. Stop using the system immediately and
consult any authorized Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
NOTICE
■To prevent damage
Do not pour any liquid on to the “SOS”
button panel etc. and make any impact to it.

6-1. Maintenance and care
Maintenance and care
Remove dirt and dust using a vac-
uum cleaner. Wipe dirty surfaces
with a cloth dampened with luke-
warm water.
 If dirt cannot be removed, wipe it off
with a soft cloth dampened with
neutral detergent diluted to approx-
imately 1%.
Wring out any excess water from
the cloth and thoroughly wipe off
remaining traces of detergent and
water.
■Shampooing the carpets
There are several commercial foaming-type cleaners available. Use a sponge or brush to apply the foam. Rub in overlapping cir-
cles. Do not use water. Wipe dirty surfaces and let them dry. Excellent results are obtained by keeping the carpet as dry as
possible.
■Handling the seat belts
Clean with mild soap and lukewarm water
using a cloth or sponge. Also check the belts periodically for excessive wear, fraying or cuts.
■When cleaning the carpeted portions of
the glove box, console box, etc.
If a strong adhesive tape is used, there is a
possibility that the surface of the carpet could be damaged.
NOTICE
■When using a high-pressure car wash
●When washing the vehicle, do not let
water from the high-pressure washer directly hit the camera, the area around the camera or inside of the out-
side door handles. Due to the shock from high-pressure water, it is possible that the device may not operate nor-
mally.
●Do not bring the nozzle tip close to boots (rubber or resin manufactured cover), connectors or the following
parts. The parts may be damaged if they come into contact with high-pres-sure water.
• Traction related parts
• Steering parts
• Suspension parts
• Brake parts
●LC500h: Do not wash the underside of the vehicle using a high pressure car
washer.

6-3. Do-it-yourself maintenance
Maintenance and care
WARNING
The engine compartment contains many mechanisms and fluids that may move suddenly, become hot, or become elec-
trically energized. To avoid death or seri- ous injury, observe the following precautions.
■When working on the engine com-
partment
●LC500h: Make sure that the “IGNI-
TION ON” on the multi-information display and the “READY” indicator are both off.
●Keep hands, clothing and tools away
from the moving fan and engine drive belt.
●LC500: Be careful not to touch the engine, radiator, exhaust manifold, etc.
right after driving as they may be hot. Oil and other fluids may also be hot.LC500h: Be careful not to touch the
engine, power control unit, radiator, exhaust manifold, etc. right after driv-ing as they may be hot. Oil and other
fluids may also be hot.
●Do not leave anything that may burn easily, such as paper and rags, in the engine compartment.
●Do not smoke, cause sparks or expose
an open flame to fuel. Fuel fumes are flammable.
●Take care because brake fluid can harm your hands or eyes and damage
painted surfaces. If fluid gets on your hands or in your eyes, flush the affected area with clean water imme-
diately. If you still experience discomfort, con-sult a doctor.
■When working near the electric cool-ing fan or radiator grille
Be sure the engine switch <power switch> is off.
With the engine switch <power switch> in IGNITION ON mode <ON mode>, the electric cooling fan may automatically
start to run if the air conditioning is on and/or the coolant temperature is high. ( P.323)
■Safety glasses
Wear safety glasses to prevent flying or falling material, fluid spray, etc. from get-
ting in your eyes.
NOTICE
■If you remove the air cleaner filter
Driving with the air cleaner filter
removed may cause excessive engine wear due to dirt in the air.
■If the fluid level is low or high
It is normal for the brake fluid level to go down slightly as the brake pads wear or when the fluid level in the accumulator is
high. If the reservoir needs frequent refilling, it may indicate a serious problem.

6-3. Do-it-yourself maintenance
■When to replace your vehicle’s tires
Tires should be replaced if:
●The treadwear indicators are showing on a tire.
●You have tire damage such as cuts, splits, cracks deep enough to expose the fabric,
and bulges indicating internal damage
●A tire goes flat repeatedly or cannot be
properly repaired due to the size or loca- tion of a cut or other damage
If you are not sure, consult any authorized Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
■Tire life
Any tire over 6 years old must be checked by a qualified technician even if it has sel-
dom or never been used or damage is not obvious.
■Low profile tires (21-inch tires)
Generally, low profile tires will wear more rapidly and tire grip performance will be reduced on snowy and/or icy roads when
compared to standard tires. Be sure to use snow tires on snowy and/or icy roads and drive carefully at a speed appropriate for
road and weather conditions.
■If the tread on snow tires wears down below 4 mm (0.16 in.)
The effectiveness of the tires as snow tires is lost.
Rotate the tires in the order shown.
WARNING
■When inspecting or replacing tires
Observe the following precautions to
prevent accidents. Failure to do so may cause damage to parts of the drivetrain as well as danger-
ous handling characteristics, which may lead to an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
●Do not mix tires of different makes,
models or tread patterns. Also, do not mix tires of remarkably different treadwear.
●Do not use tire sizes other than those recommended by Lexus.
●Do not mix differently constructed
tires (radial, bias-belted or bias-ply tires).
●Do not mix summer, all season and snow tires.
●Do not use tires that have been used
on another vehicle. Do not use tires if you do not know how they were used previously.
NOTICE
■Driving on rough roads
Take particular care when driving on roads with loose surfaces or potholes.
These conditions may cause losses in tire inflation pressure, reducing the cushion-ing ability of the tires. In addition, driving
on rough roads may cause damage to the tires themselves, as well as the vehi-cle’s wheels and body.
■Low profile tires (21-inch tires)
Low profile tires may cause greater dam- age than usual to the tire wheel when
sustaining impact from the road surface. Therefore, pay attention to the following:
●Be sure to use proper tire inflation pressure. If tires are under-inflated,
they may be damaged more severely.
●Avoid potholes, uneven pavement, curbs and other road hazards. Failure to do so may lead to severe tire and
wheel damage.
■If tire inflation pressure of each tire becomes low while driving
Do not continue driving, or your tires and/or wheels may be ruined.
