AUTOMATIC ENGINE STOP (IF EQUIPPED)
WHAT IS AUTOMATIC ENGINE STOP
Automatic engine stop is a feature thatswitches the engine off if it has been idlingfor an extended period to help you save fuel.
HOW DOES AUTOMATIC ENGINESTOP WORK
Automatic engine stop turns the engine off.The ignition also turns off in order to savebattery power. Before the engine shutsdown, a message appears in the informationdisplay showing a timer counting down. Ifyou do not intervene within 30 seconds, theengine shuts down. Another messageappears in the information display to informyou that the engine has shut down in orderto save fuel. Start your vehicle as younormally do.
SWITCHING AUTOMATIC ENGINESTOP ON AND OFF
1.Press the menu button on the steeringwheel to enter the information displaymain menu.
2.Select Settings.
3.Switch Auto Engine Off or 30min MaxIdle on or off.
Note: You cannot permanently switch offthe automatic shutdown. If you switch it off,it turns on each time you switch the ignitionon.
OVERRIDING AUTOMATIC ENGINESTOP
You can stop the engine shutdown, or resetthe timer, at any point before the 30-secondcountdown has expired by doing any of thefollowing:
•Pressing the brake pedal or acceleratorpedal.
•Pressing the OK or RESET button duringthe countdown.
Note: You cannot permanently switch offthe automatic engine shutdown feature. When you switch it off temporarily, it turnson at the next ignition cycle.
ACCESSING THE PASSIVE KEY
BACKUP POSITION
If you are unable to start the engine, do thefollowing:
1.Open the floor console storagecompartment lid.

2.With the buttons facing upward and theunlock button facing the front of yourvehicle, place the passive key into thebackup slot.
3.With the key in this position, press thebrake pedal then press the push buttonignition switch to switch the ignition onand start your vehicle.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp
If it illuminates when the engine isrunning, the on-board diagnosticssystem is detecting a malfunctionof the vehicle emission control system.
If it flashes, engine misfire could beoccurring. Increased exhaust gastemperatures could damage the catalyticconverter or other vehicle components.Avoid heavy acceleration and deceleration,and have your vehicle checked as soon aspossible.
Powertrain Warning Lamp
If it illuminates when the engine isrunning, this indicates a powertrainor four-wheel drive fault. If itflashes when you are driving, immediatelyreduce the vehicle speed. Avoid heavyacceleration and deceleration, and have yourvehicle checked as soon as possible.
If both lamps illuminate when the engine isrunning, stop your vehicle as soon as it issafe to do so. Continuing to drive yourvehicle could cause reduced power or theengine to stop. Switch the ignition off andattempt to restart the engine. Have yourvehicle checked as soon as possible.

Why is the engine idle speed high when Iam starting the engine?
The speed at which the engine idlesimmediately after starting is optimizedto minimize vehicle emissions andmaximize cabin comfort and fueleconomy.
Why does the engine not crank?
You can only attempt to start the enginefor a limited amount of time before thestarting system temporarily disables. Ifyou exceed the starting time limit, amessage may appear and you cannotattempt to start the engine for at least15 minutes.
Why do I experience different drivingcharacteristics?
If you disconnect the battery, yourvehicle may exhibit some unusualdriving characteristics for approximately5 mi (8 km) after you reconnect it. Thisis because the engine managementsystem must realign itself with theengine. You can disregard any unusualdriving characteristics during this period.
Why can I not start the engine?
If you cannot start the engine after 3attempts, wait 10 seconds and do thefollowing:
1.Fully press the brake pedal.
Note:Make sure that the parking brake isapplied.
Note:Make sure that the transmission is inpark (P) or neutral (N).
2.Fully press the accelerator pedal andhold it there.
3.Press the push button ignition switch.
Note:The engine cranks for a short periodof time and then it stops.
4.Release the accelerator pedal.
5.Press the push button ignition switch.
Why does the system not detect a passivekey?
If the system does not detect a passivekey and you are unable to start theengine, insert the passive key into thebackup position and press the pushbutton ignition switch to start theengine. See Accessing the Passive KeyBackup Position (page 196).

WHAT IS AUTO-START-STOP
The system is designed to help reduce fuelconsumption and CO2 emissions by stopping
the engine when it is idling, for example attraffic lights.
AUTO-START-STOP PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: Apply the parking brake,shift into park (P), switch the ignition offand remove the key before you leave yourvehicle. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.

SWITCHING AUTO-START-STOP
ON AND OFF
Press the driver assistance button on theinstrument panel to access theAuto-Start-Stop feature on the touchscreen.Use the touchscreen to deactivate thefeature. Deactivating the feature lasts onlyone key cycle. Use the touchscreen torestore Auto-Start-Stop function.
STOPPING THE ENGINE
Stop your vehicle, keep your foot on thebrake pedal and the transmission in drive(D).
Note:Power assist steering turns off whenthe engine stops.
RESTARTING THE ENGINE
Release the brake pedal or press theaccelerator pedal.
A message appears in the instrument clusterdisplay if the system requires you to takeaction.
AUTO-START-STOP INDICATORS
WARNING: The system may requirethe engine to automatically restart whenthe auto-start-stop indicator illuminatesgreen or flashes amber. Failure to followthis instruction could result in personalinjury.

POST-CRASH ALERT SYSTEMLIMITATIONS
Depending on applicable laws in the countryyour vehicle was built for, the horn does notsound in the event of a serious impact.
SWITCHING THE POST-CRASH ALERTSYSTEM OFF
Press the hazard flasher switch, the unlockbutton on the remote control, the panicbutton on the remote control or cycle theignition to switch the system off.
Note:The alert turns off when the vehiclebattery runs out of charge.
AUTOMATIC CRASH SHUTOFF
WHAT IS AUTOMATIC CRASHSHUTOFF
The automatic crash shutoff is designed tostop the fuel going to the engine in the eventof a moderate or severe crash.
Note:Not every impact causes a shutoff.

WARNING: If your vehicle has beeninvolved in a crash, have the fuel systemchecked. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in fire, personal injury or death.
