Ignoring the following precautions could cause lead to accumulate on the catalyst inside the
converter or cause the converter to get very hot. Either condition will damage the converter
and cause poor performance.
¾Do not drive your Mazda with any sign of engine malfunction.
¾Do not coast with the ignition switched
off.
¾Do not descend steep grades in gear with the ignition switched off.
¾Do not operate the engine at high idle for more than 2 minutes.
¾Do not tamper with the emission control system. All inspections and adjustments must be
made by a qualified technician.
¾Do not push-start or pull-start this vehicle.

Do not drive your vehicle if you smell exhaust gas inside the vehicle:
Engine exhaust gas is dangerous. This gas contains carbon monoxide (CO), which is
colourless, odourless, and poisonous. When inhaled, it can cause loss of consciousness and
death. If you smell exhaust gas inside the vehicle, keep all windows fully open and contact an
expert repairer (we recommend an Authorised Mazda Repairer) immediately.
Do not run the engine when inside an enclosed area:
Running the engine inside an enclosed area, such as a garage, is dangerous. Exhaust gas,
which contains poisonous carbon monoxide, could easily enter the cabin. Loss of
consciousness or even death could occur.
Open the windows or adjust the heating or cooling system to draw fresh air when idling the
engine:
Exhaust gas is dangerous. When the vehicle is stopped with the windows closed and the
engine running for a long time even in an open area, exhaust gas, which contains poisonous
carbon monoxide, could enter the cabin. Loss of consciousness or even death could occur.
Clear snow from underneath and around your vehicle, particularly the tail pipe, before
starting the engine:
Running the engine when a vehicle is stopped in deep snow is dangerous. The exhaust pipe
could be blocked by the snow, allowing exhaust gas to enter the cabin. Because exhaust gas
contains poisonous carbon monoxide, it could cause loss of consciousness or even death to
occupants in the cabin.

¾After driving at freeway speeds or up a long hill, trailer towing for a long time, idle the
engine at least 30 seconds before stopping it. Otherwise, the turbocharger could be
damaged. However, when i-stop operates, idling is unnecessary.
¾Racing or over-revving the engine, particularly after it's just been started, can damage the
turbocharger.
¾To protect the engine from damage, the engine is designed so that it cannot be raced just
after starting it in extremely cold weather.

Do not stop the engine while the vehicle is
moving:
Stopping the engine while the vehicle is

NOTE
Under the following conditions, a period of time is required to stop engine idling
xThe battery power is depleted for some reasons such as the vehicle has not been driven
for a long period.
xThe ambient temperature is high or low.
xAfter the battery terminals are disconnected for some reasons such as for battery
replacement.
x(SKYACTIV-D 1.5)
After PM removal is performed by the diesel particulate filter (DPF).
Engine does not restart
If the following operations are performed while the idling is stopped, the engine will not
restart for safety reasons. In such cases, start the engine using the normal method.
xThe bonnet is opened.
x(European model)
x(Without M Hybrid)
The driver's seat belt is unfastened and the driver's door is opened.
x(With M Hybrid)
The driver's door is opened.
x(Except European model)
x(Manual transaxle)
With the shift lever in a position other than neutral, the driver's seat belt is unfastened
and the driver's door is opened.
x(Automatic transaxle)
With the selector lever in the D or M (not in second gear fixed mode), the driver's seat
belt is unfastened and the driver's door is opened.
Engine-stop period is short or time until next engine idle stop is long
xThe ambient temperature is high or low.

Engine restarts automatically while engine idling is stopped
Under the following conditions, the engine restarts automatically.
xThe i-stop OFF switch is pressed until the beep sounds.
xThe air conditioner is operated with the airflow mode dial in the position.
x(Automatic air-conditioning)
xThe temperature setting dial of the air conditioner is set to the maximum heating/
maximum cooling (A/C ON).
xThe cabin temperature is largely different from the set temperature of the air
conditioner.
xThe brakes are released slightly on a slope and the vehicle begins to move.
xTwo minutes have elapsed since the idling was stopped.
xThe battery power is depleted.
x(Manual transaxle (With M Hybrid))
xThe shift lever is shifted to the R position.
xThe brake pedal is depressed with the shift lever in the neutral position.
xThe accelerator pedal is depressed.
xThe shift lever is shifted to a position other than neutral with the brake pedal released
and the clutch pedal depressed.
xThe driver's seat belt is unfastened.
x(Automatic transaxle)
xThe accelerator pedal is depressed with the selector lever in the D or M (not in second
gear fixed mode) position.
xThe selector lever is shifted to the R position.
xThe selector lever is shifted from N or P position to D or M (not in second gear fixed
mode) position.
xThe steering wheel is operated with the selector lever in the D or M (not in second gear
fixed mode) position.
xThe selector lever is in the M position and the second gear fixed mode is selected.
x(Except European model)

Selector lever is operated while engine idling is stopped (automatic transaxle)
If the selector lever is shifted from D or M (not in second gear fixed mode) position to N or
P position while engine idling is stopped, the engine does not restart even when the brake
pedal is released. The engine will restart if the brake pedal is depressed again or the
selector lever is shifted to the D, M (not in second gear fixed mode), or R position. (For the
purposes of safety, always keep the brake pedal depressed when shifting the selector lever
while engine idling is stopped.)
x(European model)
If the selector lever is shifted from the D or M (not in second gear fixed mode) position to
the N or P position, and the driver's seat belt is unfastened and the driver's door is
opened, the engine does not restart. Start the engine using the normal method.
x(Except European model)
If the selector lever is shifted from the D or M (not in second gear fixed mode) to the N or
P position, and the driver's seat belt is unfastened and the driver's door is opened, the
engine restarts.
Battery terminals are disconnected
Engine idling may not stop right after the battery terminals are disconnected. In addition, if
the battery is replaced, the i-stop functions must be verified. Consult an expert repairer (we
recommend an Authorised Mazda Repairer).
