High Beam Control System (HBC) *
The High Beam Control System (HBC) determines the conditions in front of the vehicle
using the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) while driving in darkness to automatically switch
the headlights between high and low beams.
Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on page 4-18 .
While driving the vehicle at a speed of about 30 km/h (19 mph) or more, the headlights are
switched to high beams when there are no vehicles ahead or approaching in the opposite
direction.
The system switches the headlights to low beams when one of the following occurs:
 


y The system detects a vehicle or the headlights/lights of a vehicle approaching in the
opposite direction.
 


y The vehicle is driven on roads lined with streetlamps or on roads in well-lit cities and
towns.
 


y The vehicle is driven at less than about 20 km/h (12 mph).

Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) The recognition distance of the
Forward Sensing Camera (FSC)
varies according to the
surrounding conditions.

The warning light turns on when the system has a malfunction.
Refer to Warning Indication/Warning Lights on page 4-26 .
CAUTION
 


¾ Do not adjust the vehicle height, modify the headlight units, or remove the camera,
otherwise the system will not operate normally.
 


¾ Do not rely excessively on the High Beam Control System (HBC) and drive the vehicle while
paying suffi cient attention to safety. Switch the headlights between the high beams and
low beams manually if necessary.

N O T E
The timing in which the system switches the headlights changes under the following
conditions. If the system does not switch the headlights appropriately, manually switch
between high and low beams according to the visibility as well as road and traf¿ c
conditions.
 


y When there are sources of light in the area such as street lamps, illuminated signboards,
and traf¿ c signals.




y When there are reÀ ective objects in the surrounding area such as reÀ ective plates and
signs.
 


y When visibility is reduced under rain, snow and foggy conditions.



y When driving on roads with sharp turn or hilly terrain.



y When the headlights/rear lamps of vehicles in front of you or in the opposite lane are dim
or not illuminated.
 


y When there is suf¿ cient darkness such as at dawn or dusk.



y When the luggage compartment is loaded with heavy objects.



y When visibility is reduced due to a vehicle in front of you spraying water from its tires
onto your windshield.

To Operate the System
The High Beam Control System (HBC)
operates to switch the headlights
automatically between high and low
beams after the ignition is switched ON
and the headlight switch is in the AUTO
and high beam position.
The High Beam Control System (HBC)
determines that it is dark based on the
brightness of the surrounding area. At the
same time, the High Beam Control System
(HBC) indicator light (green) in the
instrument cluster illuminates.



N O T E
 y When the vehicle speed is about 30
km/h (19 mph) or more, the headlights
automatically switch to high beams
when there are no vehicles ahead or
approaching in the opposite direction.

 When the vehicle speed is less than
about 20 km/h (12 mph), the High Beam
Control System (HBC) switches the
headlights to low beams.
 


y The low beams may not switch to high
beams when cornering.
 


y Operation of the High Beam Control
System (HBC) function can be disabled.

y Under the following conditions, the LDWS may not be able to detect white or yellow lines
correctly and the LDWS may not operate correctly.
 


y If an object placed on the dashboard is reÀ ected in the windshield and picked up by the
camera.
 


y Heavy luggage is loaded in the luggage compartment the vehicle is inclined.



y The tire pressures are not adjusted to the speci¿ ed pressure.



y When the vehicle is driven on the entry and exit to or from the rest area or tollgate of a
highway.
 


y The white or yellow lines are less visible because of dirt or paint À aking.



y The vehicle ahead is running near a white or yellow line and the line is less visible.



y A white or yellow line is less visible because of bad weather (rain, fog, or snow).



y The vehicle is driven on a temporary lane or section with a closed lane due to
construction.
 


y A misleading line is picked up on the road such as a temporary line for construction,
or because of shade, lingering snow, or grooves ¿ lled with water.




y The surrounding brightness suddenly changes such as when entering or exiting a
tunnel.
 


y The illumination of the headlights is weakened because of dirt or the optical axis is
deviated.
 


y The windshield is dirty or foggy.



y Back-light is reÀ ecting from the road surface.



y The road surface is wet and shiny after rain, or there are puddles on the road.



y The shade of a guardrail parallel to a white or yellow line is on the road.



y The width of a lane is excessively narrow or wide.



y The road is excessively uneven.



y The vehicle is shaken after hitting a road bump.



y There are two or more adjacent white or yellow lines.



y There are various road markings or lane markings of various shapes near an
intersection.

y In the following cases, the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) cannot detect target objects
correctly, and each system may be unable to operate normally.
 


y The height of the vehicle ahead is low.



y You drive your vehicle at the same speed as the vehicle ahead.



y Headlights are not turned on during the night or when going through a tunnel. 



y In the following cases, the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) may not be able to detect
target objects correctly.
 


y When driving next to walls with no patterning (including fences and longitudinally
striped walls).
 


y The taillights of the vehicle ahead are turned off.



y A vehicle is outside the illumination range of the headlights.



y The vehicle is making a sharp turn, or ascending or descending a steep slope.



y Entering or exiting a tunnel.



y Heavy luggage is loaded causing the vehicle to tilt.



y Strong light is shone at the front of the vehicle (back light or high-beam light from on-
coming vehicles).
 


y There are many light emitters on the vehicle ahead.



y When the vehicle ahead is not equipped with taillights or the taillights are turned off at
nighttime.
 y The vehicle ahead has a special shape. For example, a vehicle towing a trailer house
or a boat, or a vehicle carrier carrying a vehicle with its front pointed rearward.

When removing the lens or lamp unit
using a fl athead screwdriver, make
sure that the fl athead screwdriver does
not contact the interior terminal. If
the fl athead screwdriver contacts the
terminal, a short circuit may occur.

y To replace the bulb, contact an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.
 


y Use the protective cover and carton for
the replacement bulb to dispose of the
old bulb promptly and out of the reach
of children.

Replacing Exterior Light Bulbs
Headlights, Daytime running lights
(LED type), Parking lights, High-mount
brake light, Brake lights, Taillights
The LED bulb cannot be replaced as a
single unit because it is an integrated unit.
The LED bulb has to be replaced with the
unit. We recommend an Authorized Mazda
Dealer when the replacement is necessary.
Daytime running lights (Bulb type)
1. Make sure the ignition is switched off,
and the headlight switch is off.
2. Pull the center of each plastic retainer
and remove the retainers.

3. Turn the screw counterclockwise and
remove it, and then partially peel back
the mudguard.



4. Turn the socket and bulb assembly
counterclockwise and remove it.

Replacing the fuses under the hood
If the headlights or other electrical
components do not work and the fuses
in the cabin are normal, inspect the fuse
block under the hood. If a fuse is blown, it
must be replaced. Follow these steps:


1. Make sure the ignition is switched off,
and other switches are off.
2. Remove the fuse block cover.
N O T E
If the lock is forcefully opened, the fuse
block cover may come in contact with the
frame when it is removed and become
scratched.
When removing the cover, remove it slowly
according to the following procedure.

1. Disengage the rear lock by pressing
down on the front tab with your
¿ ngers.
2. Remove the front tab while slightly
lifting the front of the cover.

3. Remove the cover while lifting it and
sliding it to the rear.


3. If any fuse but the MAIN fuse is
blown, replace it with a new one of the
same amperage rating .

WARNING
Do not replace the main fuse and
multiplex slow blow fuse by yourself.
Have an Authorized Mazda Dealer
perform the replacement:
Replacing these fuses by yourself is
dangerous because they are high
current fuses. Incorrect replacement
could cause an electrical shock or a
short circuit resulting in a fi re.

4. Reinstall the cover and make sure that
it is securely installed.
