g
er available in the following situations:
= the vehicle is switched oM.
= the brake system or power steering system
is malfunctioning.
= the energy supply or the on-board electri-
cal system is malfunctioning.
When your vehicle is towed away, signiNcantly
more eMort may be required to steer and
brake than is normally required.
Use a tow bar.
Make sure that the steering wheel can
mo

ve freely before towing the vehicle
away. *
NOTE Damag

power If you pull away sharply, the tractive power
ma

y be too high and the vehicles could be
damaged.

amperage. *
NOTE Damag
e due to incorrect fuses Using incorrect fuses can result in damage to
electr
ical components or systems or their
functions being considerably restricted.
Use only fuses approved for Mercedes-
Benz wit

h the respective speciNed fuse
rating. Blown fuses must be replaced with fuses of the
same r

ating, which you can recognise by the col-
our and the label. The fuse ratings and further
information to be observed can be found in the
fuse assignment diagram.

t

hat no moisture can enter the fuse box.
When closing the fuse box, make sure
t

hat the seal of the lid is positioned cor-
rectly on the fuse box. If the newly inserted fuse also blows, have the
cause tr
aced and rectiNed at a qualiNed specialist
workshop.

Notes on noise or unusual handling characteris-
tics
Mak
e sure there are no vibrations, noises or
unusual handling characteristics when the vehicle
is in motion. This may indicate that the wheels or
tyres are damaged. Hidden tyre damage could
also be causing the unusual handling characteris-
tics.
If you suspect that a tyre is defective, reduce your
speed immediately and have the tyres and wheels
checked at a qualiNed specialist workshop. Notes on regularly inspecting wheels and tyres
&
WARNING Risk of injur
y due to damaged
tyres
Damaged tyres can cause tyre pressure loss.
Check the tyres regularly for signs of
damag
e and replace any damaged tyres
immediately. &
WARNING Risk of aq
uaplaning due to
insuPcient tyre tread
*nsuPcient tyr
e tread will result in reduced
tyre grip.
The risk of aquaplaning is increased on wet
roads, especially when the speed of the vehi-
cle is not adapted to suit the conditions.
Thus, you should regularly check the
tr

ead depth and the condition of the
tread across the entire width of all tyres.
Minimum tread depth for:
= Summer tyr

es: 3 mm
= M+S tyres: 4 mm
For safety reasons, replace the tyres
bef
ore the legally-prescribed limit for the
minimum tread depth is reached. Carry out the following checks on all wheels regu-
lar
ly, at least once a month or as required, for
example, prior to a long journey or driving oM-
road:
= Check the tyre pressure ( page 375).=
V
isually inspect wheels and tyres for damage.
= Check the valve caps.
= Visual check of the tyre tread depth and the
tyre contact surface across the entire width.
The minimum tread depth for summer tyres is
3 mm and for winter tyres 4 mm. Notes on snow chains
&
WARNING Risk of accident due t
o incor-
rectly Ntted snow chains
If you have Ntt
ed snow chains to the rear
wheels, they may drag against the vehicle
body or chassis components.
Never Nt sno
w chains on the rear
wheels.
Only Nt sno
w chains on the front wheels
in pairs. 374
Wheels and tyres

*
NOTE Damag e to vehicle body or suspen-
sion components caused by Ntted snow
chains On 4MATIC vehicles, if you
Nt sno
w chains on
the rear wheels, you can damage vehicle body
or suspension components.
On 4MATIC vehicles, only Nt sno
w chains
on the front wheels. *
NOTE Damag
e to the wheel trim from Nt-
ted snow chains If snow chains are
Ntt
ed to steel wheels, the
wheel trims can be damaged.
Remove the wheel trims of steel wheels
bef
ore Ntting snow chains. Observe the following notes when using snow
c

hains:
= Snow chains are only permissible for certain
wheel/tyre combinations. You can obtain
information about this from a Mercedes-Benz
Service Centre. =
F
or safety reasons, only use snow chains that
have been speciNcally approved for your vehi-
cle by Mercedes-Benz, or snow chains with
the same quality standard.
= If snow chains are Ntted, the maximum per-
missible speed is 50 km/h.
= Vehicles with Active Parking Assist: do not use
Active Parking Assist when snow chains are
Ntted.
% You can permanently limit the maximum
speed f

or driving with winter tyres
( page 235).
% You can deactivate ESP n
t
o pull away
( page 227). This allows the wheels to spin,
achieving an increased driving force. Tyre pressure
Notes on tyre pressure
&
WARNING Risk of accident due t
o insuP-
cient or excessive tyre pressure
UnderinOated or o
verinOated tyres pose in par-
ticular the following risks:
= The tyres can burst.
= The tyres can wear excessively and/or
unevenly.
= The driving characteristics as well as the
steering and braking characteristics may
be greatly impaired.
Comply with the recommended tyre
pr

essure and check the tyre pressure of
all tyres, including the spare wheel, regu-
larly:
= mont
hly
= when the load changes
= before embarking on a longer journey Wheels and tyres
375

=
if oper ating conditions change, e.g. oM-
road driving
Adjust the tyre pressure, if necessary. Tyre pressure which is too high or too low can:
= Shor

ten the service life of the tyres.
= Cause increased tyre damage.
= Adversely aMect driving characteristics and
thus driving safety, e.g. due to aquaplaning. &
WARNING Risk of accident due t
o repea-
ted pressure drop in the tyres
The wheels, valves or tyres could be damaged.
T
oo low a tyre pressure can lead to the tyres
bursting.
Examine the tyres for foreign objects.
Check whether the tyre has a puncture
or t

he valve has a leak.
If you are unable to rectify the damage,
cont

act a qualiNed specialist workshop. Information on the recommended tyre pressure
f

or the vehicle's factory-Ntted tyres can be found
on the tyre pressure table on the inside of the fuel
Nller Oap ( page 376).
Use a suitable pressure gauge to check the tyre
pressure. The outer appearance of a tyre does not
permit any reliable conclusion about the tyre pres-
sure.
Only correct tyre pressures when the tyres are
cold. Conditions for cold tyres:
= The vehicle has been parked with the tyres out
of direct sunlight for at least three hours.
= The vehicle has travelled less than 1.6 km.
The vehicle's tyres heat up when driving. As the
temperature of the tyres increases, so too does
the tyre pressure.
Vehicles with a tyre pressure monitoring system:
you can also check the tyre pressure using the
on-board computer ( page 377).
Notes on trailer operation
Always inOate the rear axle tyres to the recom-
mended tyre pressures on the tyre pressure table
for increased load. Tyre pressure table
The tyre pressure table is on the inside of the fuel
Nller Oap. The tyre pressure table shows the recommended
tyr

e pressure for all tyres approved for this vehi-
cle. The recommended tyre pressures apply for
cold tyres under various operating conditions, i.e.
loading and/or speed of the vehicle. 376
