Approval categories for child restraint systems
Only use approved child restraint systems
Onl y child restraint systems that meet the follow-
ing UNECE standards are permitted for use in the
vehicle:
= UN-R44
= UN-R129 (i-Size child restraint systems)
*dentiNcation on the child restraint system
Information about the approval category, weight
category and approval number, forexample, is on
the approval label on the child restraint system.
There may be further information suchas the ISO-
FIX size categories, depending on the approval
category of the child restraint system. Approval categories in accordance with UN-R44
Example of an approval label
= U
niversal: child restraint systems in the "Uni-
versal" category are approved for installation
in vehicles. They can be used, in accordance
with overviews of the suitability of seats for
securing child restraint systems, on seats
labelled U, UF or IUF. The identiNcation
IUF r
efers to ISOFIX child
restraint systems in the "Universal" category.
These child restraint systems must also be
secured using Top Tether or support points.
= Semi-Universal: child restraint systems in the
"Semi-Universal" category may only be used if
the vehicle and vehicle seat are listed in the
child restraint system manufacturer's vehicle
model list.
= Vehicle-speciNc: child restraint systems in the
vehicle-speciNc category may only be used if
the vehicle and vehicle seat are listed in the
child restraint system manufacturer's vehicle

1 Adjust the seat cushion inclination so that the front edge of the
seat cushion is in t he highest position and the rear edge of the seat
cushion is in the lowest position.

are not engaged
The rear bench seat, rear seat and seat back-
r
est may fold forwards, even while the vehicle
is in motion.
= As a result, the vehicle occupant will be
pressed into the seat belt with increased
force. The seat belt will not be able to pro-
tect as intended and could cause addi-
tional injury.
= Objects or loads in the boot or load com-
partment cannot be restrained by the seat
backrest. 
Make sure that the rear bench seat, the
r
ear seat and the seat backrest are
engaged before every trip. If the rear seat backrest is not engaged and
loc

ked in place, the red lock veriNcation indicator
will be visible. When Ntting
a belt-secur
ed child restraint system,
observe the following:
s Always comply with the manufacturer's
ins

tallation and operating instructions for the
child restraint system used.
s For a child restraint system in the "Universal"
or "Semi-U
niversal" category, make sure that
the system has been approved for the vehicle
seat.
Observe the notes under "Suitability of seats
for attaching belt-secured child restraint sys-
tems" ( page 75).
s When using a weight category 0/0+ baby
car seat and a w
eight category I rearward-
facing child restraint system on a rear seat:
adjust the front seat so that the seat does
not touch the child restraint system.
s When using a weight category I forward-
f
acing child restraint system: remove the
head restraint from the respective seat, if
possible.
Aser the child restraint system has been
removed, replace the head restraint immedi-
ately and adjust all head restraints correctly. Occupant safety
