they could, in particular:
= open doors, thereby endangering other
persons or road users.
= get out and be struck by oncoming traPc.
= operate vehicle equipment and become
trapped, for example.
In addition, the children could also set the
vehicle in motion by, for example:
= releasing the parking brake.
= changing the transmission position.
= starting the vehicle. 
Never leave children unattended in the

ehicle. 
When leaving the vehicle, always take the

ey with you and lock the vehicle. 
Keep the vehicle key out of the reach of
c
hildren. Use the DIRECT SELECT lever to switch the trans-
mission position. The cur
rent transmission posi-
tion will be shown on the instrument display. j

switched on, push the selector lever up or
down for several seconds to the Nrst point of
resistance.
Subsequently releasing the brake pedal will allow

ou to move the vehicle freely, e.g. to push it or
tow it away.
Proceed as follows if you want the automatic
transmission to remain in neutral i even if the
vehicle is switched oM or the driver's door is
opened: 
Depress the brake pedal and engage neutral

When the transmission position display shows
j, the park position is engaged. If the trans- mission position display
j does no
t appear,
apply the parking brake and secure the vehicle
to prevent it from rolling away.
% Depending on the situation, it may take a
shor
t time until j is engaged. Therefore,
always pay attention to the transmission posi-
tion display.
Park position j is eng
aged automatically if one
of the following conditions is met:
= You switch the stationary vehicle oM in trans-
mission position h or k.
= You open the driver's door when the vehicle is
at a standstill in transmission position h or
k.
= When the vehicle is rolling, you switch if oM in
transmission position h or k and bring it to
a standstill.
= You switch oM the engine, bring the vehicle to
a standstill and open the driver's door when
the vehicle is stationary or when the vehicle is
rolling and the transmission position is i.
= Engaging park position j automatically is
required by the vehicle. %
Park position j can be eng
aged automati-
cally when the vehicle is rolling very slowly.
% To manoeuvre with an open driver's door,
open t

he driver's door while at a standstill and
engage transmission position h or k again.
% At very low outside temperatures below
appr
ox. -20 °C, it may not be possible to shis
the transmission from j to another trans-
mission position when the vehicle is switched
oM. If this is the case, change the transmis-
sion position only while the vehicle is
switched on.

resistance.
When the automatic transmission is in transmis-
sion position h, it will shis g

ears automatically.
This depends, among other things, on the follow-
ing factors:
= The selected drive program
= The position of the accelerator pedal

Problems with the transmission
The transmission has a faulty gear
shis
P ossible cause:
= the transmission is losing oil. 
Have the transmission checked at a q
ualiNed
specialist workshop immediately.
The acceleration characteristics get worse, and
t
he transmission no longer shiss.
Possible cause:
= the transmission is in emergency operation
mode. 
Stop the vehicle in accordance with the tr
aPc
conditions.

he vehicle. 
Wait at least ten seconds. 
Start the vehicle again.

For plug-in hybrids, observe the information

egarding the regenerative brake system
(  page 169). When the automatic transmission is
shised t
o
position h, you can manually shis it with the
steering wheel gearshis paddle. If permitted, the
automatic transmission will shis to a higher orlower gear depending on the steering wheel gear-
shis paddle being pulled.

ou have two options for manually shising the
automatic transmission:
= Temporary setting
= Permanent setting
The gears will shis automatically when manual
shising is deactivated.
Temporary setting: 
To activate: pull s
teering wheel gearshis pad-
dle 1 or 2.
Manual shising will be activated for a short
time. The transmission position display will
show p and the current gear.
% How long manual shising s

depends on various factors.
Manual shising can be deactivated automati-
cally in the following cases:
= When the drive program is changed
= When the vehicle is restarted
= When transmission position h is engaged

dangers. With an anticipatory driving style, Glide mode
helps y

ou to reduce fuel consumption.
Glide mode is characterised by the following: = The combustion engine is disconnected from
the drivetrain and continues to run in neutral.
= The transmission position display h is shown
in green.
Glide mode is activated if the following conditions
are met:
= Drive program  is selected .
= The speed is within a suitable range.
= The road's course is suitable, e.g. no steep
uphill or downhill inclines or tight bends.
= There is no trailer hitched up to the trailer
hitch, and no bicycle rack Ntted.182

Y ou do not depress the accelerator or brake
pedal (except for light brake applications).
% Glide mode can also be activated if you have
select
ed the "Eco" setting for the drive in the
drive program .
Glide mode will be deactivated again if one of the
conditions is no long
er met.
Vehicles with Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC:
When Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is active,
the glide mode function will not be available.
Glide mode can also be prevented by the following
parameters:
= Incline
= Downhill gradient
= Temperature
= Height
= Speed
= Operating status of the engine
= TraPc situation
% You can end glide mode by operating a steer-
ing wheel g

earshis paddle ( page 181). Function of 4MATIC
4MA
TIC ensures that all four wheels are driven.
Together with ESP n
and 4ETS, 4MATIC improves
the traction of your vehicle whenever a driven
wheel spins due to insuPcient traction.
If you fail to adapt your driving style, 4MATIC can
neither reduce the risk of an accident nor override
the laws of physics. 4MATIC cannot take account
of road, weather and traPc conditions. 4MATIC is
only an aid. You are responsible especially for
maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in
front, for vehicle speed, for braking in good time
and for staying in lane.
% In wintry road conditions, the maximum eMect
of 4MA
TIC can be achieved only if you use
winter tyres (M+S tyres), with snow chains if
necessary. Refuelling

Electrostatic charge can ignite fuel vapour. 
Before you open the fuel Nller cap or

ake hold of the pump nozzle, touch the
metallic vehicle body. 
To avoid creating another electrostatic

harge, do not get into the vehicle again
during the refuelling process. &

e from fuel mixture
Vehicles with a diesel engine:
If y
ou mix diesel fuel with petrol, the Oash
point of the fuel mixture is lower than that of
pure diesel fuel.
While the vehicle is running, component parts
in the exhaust system may overheat without
warning. 
Never refuel using petrol. 
Never mix petrol with diesel fuel. *

e caused by the wrong fuel Vehicles with a petrol engine:

en small amounts of the wrong fuel could
result in damage to the fuel system, the
engine and the emission control system. 
Only refuel using unleaded, sulphur-free
spar
k-ignition engine fuel that conforms to European EN 228, or an equivalent
speciNcation.
Fuel of this speciNcation ma
y contain up to
10% ethanol. Your vehicle is suitable for use
with E10 fuel.
Never refuel with one of the following fuels:
= Diesel
= Regular petrol with an octane number
lower than 91 RON
= Petrol with more than 10% ethanol by vol-
ume, e.g. E15, E20, E85, E100
= Petrol with more than 3% methanol by vol-
ume, e.g. M15, M30
= Petrol with additives containing metal
If you have accidentally refuelled with the
wrong fuel: 
Do not switch on the vehicle.

= Marine diesel
= Heating oil
= Pure bio-diesel or vegetable oil
= ParaPn or kerosene
If you have accidentally refuelled with the

pumps.
Your vehicle is equipped with an incorrect
fuelling protector to prevent Nlling up with the
wrong fuel. This function may be deactivated
in some countries due to local circumstances.

Benz service centre.
% Vehicles with a diesel engine: when t
he fuel
tank is completely empty, top up with at least
5 litres of diesel. 186

Vehicles with a diesel engine: use a Nller nec k
with a large diameter for vehicles with a diesel
engine when topping up fuel from a fuel can.
Otherwise, the Nller neck cannot slide into the
tank.
Your vehicle is equipped with an incorrect
fuelling protector to prevent Nlling up with the
wrong fuel. This function may be deactivated
in some countries due to local circumstances.
For more information, consult a Mercedes-
Benz service centre. 
Replace the cap on the Nller nec
k and turn
clockwise until it engages audibly. 
Close fuel Nller Oap 1. Depressurising the fuel tank (plug-in hybrid with
