ments and technical events or malfunctions.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, the follow-
ing data are stored:
= operating status of system components, such
as Nll levels, tire pressure or battery status
= malfunctions or faults in important system
components, such as lights or brakes
= system reactions in special driving situations,
such as air bag deployment or the intervention of stability control systems
= information on events leading to vehicle dam-
age
In certain cases, it may be required to store data
that would have otherwise been used only tempo-
rarily. This may be the case if the vehicle has detected a malfunction, for example.
If you use services, such as repair services and
maintenance work, stored operational data as well as the vehicle identiNcation number can be
read out and used. They can be read out by
service network employees, such as workshops and manufacturers or third parties, such as break-down services. The same is true in the case ofwarranty claims and quality assurance measures.
In general, the readout is performed via the legally
prescribed port for the diagnostics connection in
the vehicle. The operational data that are read out document technical states of the vehicle or ofindividual components and assist in the diagnosisof malfunctions, compliance with warranty obliga-
tions and quality improvement. To that end, these
data, in particular information about component loads, technical events, malfunctions and otherfaults may be transmitted along with the vehicleidentiNcation number to the manufacturer. Fur-
thermore, the manufacturer is subject to product
liability. For this reason the manufacturer also
uses operational data from the vehicle, for exam-
ple, for recalls. These data can also be used to
examine the customer\bs warranty and guarantee
claims.
Malfunction memories in the vehicle can be reset
by a service outlet or at your request as part of
repair or maintenance work.Convenience and infotainment functions
You can store convenience settings and individual
settings in the vehicle and change or reset them at any time.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, this
includes the following settings, for example:
= seat and steering wheel positions
= suspension and climate control settings
= individual settings, such as interior lighting
Depending on the selected equipment, you can
import data into vehicle infotainment functions
yourself.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, this
includes the following data, for example:
= multimedia data, such as music, Nlms or pho-
tos for playback in an integrated multimedia system
= address book data for use in connection with
an integrated hands-free system or an integra-
ted navigation system
= entered navigation destinations
= data about the use of Internet servicesGeneral notes29

These data for convenience and infotainment
functions may be saved locally in the vehicle or
they may be located on a device which you have
connected to the vehicle, such as a smartphone,
USB Oash drive or MP3 player. If you have entered
these data yourself, you can delete them at any time.
This data is transmitted from the vehicle to third
parties only at your request. This applies, in par-
ticular, when you use online services in accord-
ance with the settings that you have selected.
Smartphone integration (e.g. Android Auto or Apple CarPlay n
)
If your vehicle is accordingly equipped, you can connect your smartphone or another mobile end
device to the vehicle. You can then control them by means of the control elements integrated in
the vehicle. Images and audio from the smart-
phone can be output via the multimedia system. Certain information is simultaneously transferred
to your smartphone. Depending on the type and integration, this includes position data, day/night
mode and other general vehicle statuses. For more information please consult the Operator\bsManual of the vehicle/infotainment system.This integration allows the use of selected smart-phone apps, such as navigation or music playerapps. There is no further interaction between the
smartphone and the vehicle; in particular, vehicle
data is not directly accessible. The type of addi- tional data processing is determined by the pro-vider of the app being used. Which settings youcan make, if any, depends on the speciNc app and
the operating system of your smartphone.
Online services
Wireless network connection
If your vehicle has a wireless network connection, it enables data to be exchanged between yourvehicle and additional systems. The wireless net-
work connection is made possible by the vehicle\bs own transmitter and receiver or by a mobile enddevice that you have brought into the vehicle, for
example, a smartphone. Online functions can be
used via the wireless network connection. This
includes online services and applications/apps
provided to you by the manufacturer or by other
providers.
Manufacturer\bs services
Regarding the manufacturer\bs online services, the
individual functions are described by the manu- facturer in a suitable place, for example, in theOperator\bs Manual or on the manufacturer\bs web-
site, where the relevant data protection informa-
tion is also given. Personal data may be used for
the provision of online services. Data is
exchanged via a secure connection, such as the manufacturer\bs designated IT systems. Any per-
sonal data which is collected, processed and
used, other than for the provision of services, is
done so exclusively on the basis of legal permis-
sion. This is the case, for example, for a legally prescribed emergency call system, a contractualagreement or when consent has been given.
You can have services and functions, some ofwhich are subject to a fee, activated or deactiva-
ted. This excludes legally prescribed functions and
services, such as an emergency call system.
Third-party servicesIf you use online services from other providers (third parties), these services are the responsibil-
ity of the provider in question and subject to that provider\bs data protection conditions and terms of30General notes

use. As a general rule, the manufacturer has no
inOuence on the content exchanged.
For this reason, when services are provided by third parties, please ask the service provider in question for information about the type, extent
and purpose of the collection and use of personal data.
Data protection rights
Depending on your country or the equipment and
range of functions of your vehicle as well as the services you use and the services on oMer, you
are entitled to diMerent data protection rights.
Further information on data protection and your
data protection rights can either be found on the
manufacturer\bs website or you will receive this information as part of the various services andservice oMers. There you will also Nnd the contact
information for the manufacturer and its data pro-
tection oPcers.
At a workshop, for example, with the support of a
specialist and possibly for a fee, you can have
data read out which is stored only locally in the
vehicle.
MBUX multimedia system/Mercedes me connect
If the vehicle is equipped with the MBUX multime- dia system or Mercedes me connect, additional
data about the vehicle\bs operation, the use of the
vehicle in certain situations, and the location of
the vehicle may be compiled by the MBUX multi- media system or Mercedes me connect.
For additional information, please refer to the
"MBUX multimedia system" section and/or the Mercedes me connect Terms and Conditions.
Event Data Recorder
USA only:
This vehicle is equipped with an event data
recorder (EDR). The main purpose of an EDR is to
record, in certain crash or crash-like situations, such as an air bag deployment or hitting a roadobstacle, data that will assist in understandinghow a vehicle\bs systems performed. The EDR isdesigned to record data related to vehicle dynam-
ics and safety systems for a short period of time,
typically 30 seconds or less.
The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such
data as:
= How various systems in your vehicle were
operating;
= Whether or not the driver and front passenger
seat belts were buckled/fastened
= How far (if at all) the driver was depressing the
accelerator and/or brake pedal; and,
= How fast the vehicle was traveling.
This data can help provide a better understanding
of the circumstances in which crashes and inju-
ries occur. NOTE: EDR data is recorded by your vehicle only if a non-trivial crash situation occurs;no data is recorded by the EDR under normal driv-
ing conditions and no personal data (e.g. name,
gender, age and accident location) is recorded.
However, other parties, such as law enforcement, could combine EDR data with the type of person-
ally identifying data routinely acquired during a
crash investigation.
Access to the vehicle and/or the EDR is needed
to read data that is recorded by the EDR, and spe- cial equipment is required. In addition to the vehi-
cle manufacturer, other parties that have the spe-General notes31

cial equipment, such as law enforcement, can
read the information by accessing the vehicle or the EDR.
EDR data may be used in civil and criminal mat-
ters as a tool in accident reconstruction, accident claims and vehicle safety. Since the Crash Data
Retrieval (CDR) tool that is used to extract data
from the EDR is commercially available,
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC ("MBUSA") expressly
disclaims any and all liability arising from the extraction of this information by unauthorized
Mercedes-Benz personnel.
MBUSA will not share EDR data with others with- out the consent of the vehicle owner or, if the
vehicle is leased, without the consent of the les- see. Exceptions to this representation includeresponses to subpoenas by law enforcement; by federal, state or local government; in connection
with or arising out of litigation involving MBUSA or its subsidiaries and aPliates; or, as required by
law.
Warning: the EDR is a component of the Restraint System Module. Tampering with, altering, modify-
ing or removing the EDR component may result ina malfunction of the Restraint System Module and other systems.
State laws or regulations regarding EDRs that conOict with federal regulation are pre-empted.
This means that in the event of such conOict, the
federal regulation governs. As of December 2016,
17 states have enacted laws relating to EDRs.

Restraint system
Protection provided by the restraint system
The restraint system includes the following com-
ponents:
= Seat belt system
= Air bags
= Child restraint system
= Child seat anchors
The restraint system can help prevent the vehicle
occupants from coming into contact with parts of
the vehicle interior in the event of an accident. In
the event of an accident, the restraint system can also reduce the forces to which the vehicle occu-
pants are subjected.
A seat belt can only provide the best level of pro-
tection if it is worn correctly. Depending on the
detected accident situation, Emergency Tension-
ing Devices and/or air bags supplement the pro- tection oMered by a correctly worn seat belt.
Emergency Tensioning Devices and/or air bags are not deployed in every accident.
In order for the restraint system to provide the
intended level of protection, each vehicle occu-
pant must observe the following information:
= Fasten seat belts correctly.
= Sit in an almost upright seat position with their
back against the seat backrest.
= Sit with their feet resting on the Ooor, if possi-
ble.
= Always secure persons under 5 s (1.50 m) tall
in an additional restraint system suitable for
Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
However, no system available today can com-
pletely eliminate injuries and fatalities in every
accident situation. In particular, the seat belt and
air bag generally do not protect against objects penetrating the vehicle from the outside. It is alsonot possible to completely rule out the risk of
injury caused by the air bag deploying.Limitations of the protection provided by the
restraint system&WARNING Risk of injury or death due to
modiNcations to the restraint system
Vehicle occupants may no longer be protected
as intended if alterations are made to the
restraint system.
Never alter the parts of the restraint sys- tem.Never tamper with the wiring or any elec-
tronic component parts or their sos-
ware.If it is necessary to modify the vehicle to accom- modate a person with disabilities, contact an
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for details.

Restraint system functionality
When the vehicle is switched on, a self-test is per-
formed, during which the restraint system warning lamp u lights up. It goes out no later than a
few seconds aser the vehicle is started. The com-
ponents of the restraint system are then func-
tional.
Malfunctioning restraint system
A malfunction has occurred in the restraint sys-
tem if:
= The u restraint system warning lamp does
not light up when the vehicle is switched on
= The u restraint system warning lamp lights
up continuously or repeatedly during a journey
&WARNING Risk of injury due to malfunc-
tions in the restraint system
Components in the restraint system may be activated unintentionally or not deploy as plan-
ned in an accident.
Have the restraint system checked and
repaired immediately at a qualiNed spe-
cialist workshop.
Function of the restraint system in an accident
How the restraint system works depends on the
severity of the impact detected and the apparent type of accident:
= Frontal impact
= Rear impact
= Side impact
= Rollover
The activation thresholds for the components of
the restraint system are determined based on the
evaluation of the sensor values measured at vari-
ous points in the vehicle. This process is pre-emp-
tive in nature. The restraint system components must be triggered/deployed in good time at the
start of the collision.
Factors that can only be seen or measured aser a
collision has occurred cannot play a decisive role
in air bag deployment. Nor do they provide an indication of air bag deployment.
The vehicle may be deformed signiNcantly without
an air bag being deployed. This is the case if only
parts that are relatively easily deformed are aMec-
ted and the rate of vehicle deceleration is not
high. Conversely, an air bag may have been
deployed even though the vehicle has suMered
only minor deformation. If very rigid vehicle parts
such as longitudinal members are hit, for exam-
ple, this may result in suPciently high levels of
vehicle deceleration.
Depending on the detected deployment situation, the components of the restraint system can beactivated or deployed independently of one
another:
= Emergency Tensioning Device: frontal impact,
rear impact, side impact, rollover
= Driver\bs air bag, front passenger air bag: fron-
tal impact
= Knee air bag: frontal impact
= Side air bag: side impact
= Window air bag: side impact, rollover, frontal

The front passenger air bag can only be deployed in an accident if the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFFindicator lamp is oM. If the front passenger seat is
occupied, make sure, both before and during the journey, that the status of the front passenger air
bag is correct (  page 44).&WARNING Risk of burns from hot air bag
components
The air bag parts are hot aser an air bag has
been deployed.
Do not touch the air bag parts.Have a deployed air bag replaced at a
qualiNed specialist workshop as soon as
possible.Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the
vehicle towed to a qualiNed specialist workshop
aser an accident. Take this into account espe-
cially if a Emergency Tensioning Device was trig-
gered or an air bag was deployed.If the Emergency Tensioning Devices are triggered
or an air bag is deployed, you will hear a bang,
and a small amount of powder may also be
released:
= The bang will not generally aMect your hearing.
= In general, the powder released is not hazard-
ous to health but may cause short-term breathing diPculties to persons suMering from
asthma or other pulmonary conditions.
Provided it is safe to do so, leave the vehicle
immediately or open the window in order to
prevent breathing diPculties.
Air bags and pyrotechnic Emergency Tensioning
Devices contain perchlorate material, which may require special handling or environmental protec-
tion measures. National guidelines regarding waste disposal must be observed. In California,

Protection provided by the seat belt
Always fasten your seat belt correctly before
starting a journey. A seat belt can provide the
best level of protection only if it is worn correctly.
&WARNING Risk of injury or death due to
incorrectly fastened seat belt
If the seat belt is not worn correctly, it cannot
perform its intended protective function.
In addition, an incorrectly fastened seat belt
can also cause injuries, for example, in the
event of an accident or when braking or
changing direction suddenly.
Always ensure that all vehicle occupants
have their seat belts fastened correctly
and are sitting properly.
Always observe the instructions about the correct
driver\bs seat position and adjusting the seat (  page 89).

In order for the correctly worn seat belt to provide
the intended level of protection, each vehicle
occupant must observe the following information:
= The seat belt must not be twisted and must Nt
tightly and snugly across the body.
= The seat belt must be routed across the cen-
ter of the shoulder and as low down acrossthe hips as possible.
= The shoulder section of the seat belt should
not touch your neck nor be routed under your arm or behind your back.
= Avoid wearing bulky clothing, e.g. a winter
coat.
= Push the lap belt down as far as possible
across your hips and pull tight with the shoul- der section of the belt. Never route the lap
belt across your abdomen.
Pregnant women must also take particular
care with this.
= Never route the seat belt across sharp, poin-
ted, abrasive or fragile objects.
= Only one person should use each seat belt at
any one time.= Never secure objects with a seat belt if the
seat belt is also being used by one of the vehi-
cle\bs occupants.
Also ensure that no objects, e.g. a cushion, are ever placed between a person and theseat.
The seat belts on the following seats are equipped with a special seat belt retractor:
= Front passenger seat
= Rear passenger compartment seats
Activate or deactivate the special seat belt retrac-
tor of the seat belt (  page 53).
If children are traveling in the vehicle, be sure to observe the instructions and safety notes on
"Children in the vehicle" (  page 49).
Always observe the instructions for loading the vehicle when securing objects, luggage or loads
(  page 106).Limitations of the protection provided by the seat
belt&WARNING Risk of injury or death due to
an incorrect seat position
The seat belt does not oMer the intended level
of protection if you have not moved the seat backrest to an almost vertical position.
In particular, you could slip beneath the seat- belt and become injured.
Adjust the seat properly before begin-
ning your journey.Always ensure that the seat backrest is
in an almost vertical position and that
the shoulder belt is routed across the
center of your shoulder.&WARNING Risk of injury or death when
additional restraint systems are not used
for persons with a smaller stature
Persons under 5 s (1.50 m ) tall cannot wear
the seat belt correctly without a suitable addi-
tional restraint system.

to blocked seat belt anchorage
The restraint eMect of the seat belt is impaired
if objects between the front seat and the door
are blocking the movable seat belt anchorage
on the front seat.
Before starting a journey, make sure that
there are no objects between the front
seat and the door.&WARNING Risk of injury or death due to
damaged or modiNed seat belts
Seat belts cannot provide protection in the fol-
lowing situations:
= The seat belt is damaged, has been modi-
Ned, is extremely dirty, bleached or dyed
=
The seat belt buckle is damaged or
extremely dirty
= ModiNcations have been made to the
Emergency Tensioning Device, seat belt
anchorage or seat belt retractor
Seat belts may sustain non-visible damage in
an accident, e.g. due to glass splinters.
ModiNed or damaged seat belts could tear or
fail in the event of an accident, for example.
ModiNed Emergency Tensioning Devices could
accidentally trigger or fail to function as inten- ded.Never modify the seat belt system, for
example the seat belt, seat belt buckle,
Emergency Tensioning Device, seat belt
anchorage and seat belt retractor.Make sure that the seat belts are undam-
aged, not worn and clean.Always have the seat belts checked immediately aser an accident at a quali-
Ned specialist workshop.Only use seat belts which have been approved for

deployed pyrotechnic Emergency Tension-
ing Devices
Pyrotechnic Emergency Tensioning Devices
that have been deployed are no longer opera-
tional and are unable to perform their inten-
ded protective function.
Therefore, have deployed pyrotechnic
Emergency Tensioning Devices immedi-
ately replaced at a qualiNed specialist
workshop.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the
vehicle towed to a qualiNed specialist workshop
aser an accident.

*NOTE Damage caused by trapping the
seat belt
If an unused seat belt is not fully retracted, it
may become trapped in the door or in the seat
mechanism.
Always ensure that an unused seat belt
is fully retracted.
Fastening and adjusting seat belts
If the seat belt is pulled quickly or sharply, the seat belt retractor locks. The seat belt strap can-
not be pulled out any further.
Always engage seat belt tongue 1 of the seat
belt into seat belt buckle 2 of the corre-
sponding seat.To adjust the seat belt height: press button 3
on the seat belt outlet and slide the seat belt outlet to the desired position.To engage the seat belt outlet: release button
3 and ensure that the seat belt outlet
engages.\bA seat belt can only provide the best level of
protection if it is worn correctly. Observe the notes on fastening the seat belt (  page 35).*NOTE Deployment of components of the
restraint system when the front passenger
seat is unoccupied and a seat belt is
buckled
When the front passenger seat is unoccupied
and the seat belt tongue of the seat belt is
engaged in the seat belt buckle, components
of the restraint system may deploy unnecessa-
rily on the front passenger side, e.g. the Emer-
gency Tensioning Device.
Only buckle the seat belts as intended.\bObserve the notes on stowage areas
(  page 106).
