Speed Limit Assist
qFunction of Speed Limit Assist
Speed Limit Assist detects speed limits with multi- function camera and displays them in the driver display and optionally in the head-up display. Thecamera also detects speed limits with a restric-
tion indicated by an additional sign (e.g. when wet). The system detects stop signs, thereby pre-
venting the engine from being switched oM by the
ECO start/stop function.
Observe the notes on driving systems and your responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognisedangers ( page 189).
Warning when the maximum permissible speed is
exceeded
The system can warn you if you unintentionally exceed the maximum permissible speed. To do
this, you can specify in the multimedia system by how much the maximum permissible speed can
be exceeded before a warning is issued. You can specify whether the warning is to be just a visualwarning or an acoustic one as well ( page 221).
Messages on the driver display1Permissible speed2Permissible speed when there is a restriction3Additional sign with restriction%TraPc signs which have an impact on the
maximum permissible speed, e.g. signs indi-
cating the beginning or end of dual carriage-
ways, can also be detected.
If Speed Limit Assist cannot determine the cur- rent maximum permissible speed (e.g. due tomissing signs), the following display appears in
the driver display:
This is displayed continuously if the vehicle is in a
country where Speed Limit Assist is not suppor-
ted. Speed Limit Assist is not available in all coun-
tries.
System limits
The system may be impaired or may not function
particularly in the following situations:
= If visibility is poor, e.g. due to insuPcient illu-
mination of the road, highly variable shade
conditions, rain, snow, fog, swirling dust or
heavy spray.
= If there is glare, e.g. from oncoming traPc,
direct sunlight or reOections.
= If the windscreen in the area of the multifunc-
tion camera is dirty, or if the camera is misted
up, damaged or covered.
= If traPc signs are diPcult to detect, e.g. due
to dirt, snow, ice, insuPcient lighting or driving
too close to the vehicle in front, or because

they are covered, faded, damaged, badly posi-
tioned or twisted.
= Digital LED traPc signs may not be detected
correctly or at all due to technical factors, such as transmission frequency.
= If signs or the road layout is ambiguous, e.g.
traPc signs in roadworks, at exits and ramps,
in neighbouring lanes or parallel roads.
= If signs do not conform to the standard.
= If signs or road layouts are speciNc to the
country, for example, at or beyond construc- tion sites.
= Aser sharp turns and tight bends, when traPc
signs are outside the camera's Neld of vision.
= If you overtake vehicles with traPc signs
which are aPxed or attached to them.
= If you are using transport equipment secured
with a trailer coupling, such as a bicycle rack,
the system may react to restrictions for car/ trailer combinations.q Setting Speed Limit Assist

Further information ( page 203).TraPc Sign Assist
qFunction of TraPc Sign Assist
TraPc Sign Assist detects traPc signs with the
multifunction camera and compares this with information in the digital navigation map. It assists
you by displaying detected speed limits and over-
taking restrictions in the driver display and in the
head-up display. The system can issue a warning
when you exceed the maximum permissible
speed.
Vehicles with the Driving Assistance Package: in
some countries, the system can provide you with further functions and can warn you when you are
approaching pedestrian crossings or when you are about to drive past stop signs or red lights
unintentionally.
The camera also detects and analyses traPc
signs with a restriction indicated by an additional sign (e.g. when wet).
TraPc Sign Assist only visualises selected signs in
the driver display. Actual traPc signs and speed
limits have priority over traPc signs and speed
limits shown in the driver display.
Driving and parking221

Also observe the following information:
= select a speed adapted to the traPc, sur-
roundings and weather conditions
= observe actual traPc signs
= observe applicable traPc rules and regula-
tions
Observe the notes on driving systems and your responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognise dangers ( page 189).Messages in the driver display1Permissible speed2Permissible speed when there is a restriction3Additional sign with restriction
The system can show up to two traPc signs in the
driver display simultaneously. The system always prioritises displaying speed limits. Up to one traf-
Nc sign with a maximum permissible speed can be
shown in the head-up display. If two speed signs are shown in the driver display, for example, when
speed limits are detected, the value of les-hand
speed limit 1 is transmitted to the limiter, cruise
control or Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC for adoption and is shown in the head-up display.
Examples of traPc signs which can be displayed
TraPc Sign Assist can detect and display following
traPc signs 1:
= speed limits
= end of the speed limit
= overtaking restrictions
= play streets
= signs showing the start or end of motorways
= signs showing the start or end of dual carria-
geways
222Driving and parking

TraPc Sign Assist can detect following additional
signs 3 and, if necessary, analyse the relevance
of the restrictions using other vehicle sensors:
= when wet
= slippery road surfaces
= in fog
= temporary restrictions
= exits
= restrictions for car/trailer combinations
TraPc Sign Assist also uses data from the digital
street map in the navigation system. When you
leave or enter a municipality or change roads, on
a motorway exit or slip road for example, or aser
you turn at a junction, the display in the driver dis- play can thus be updated without a traPc sign
having been detected.
In addition, the system can display speed limits ahead on the driver display and the head-up dis-
play. The driver display can also show the dis-
tance to an upcoming lower limit speed. For this purpose, information from the digital road map ofthe navigation system is used. Depending on thecurrent situation and the assumed route, the dis-play message is shown up to 350 m in advance.
The Assistance menu can also display a dynamic
visualisation of the speed limits ahead.
If TraPc Sign Assist cannot determine the cur-
rently applicable maximum permissible speed
(e.g. due to missing signs), the following display appears in the driver display:
TraPc Sign Assist is not available in all countries.
If the vehicle is in a country where TraPc Sign
Assist is not supported, this is displayed continu-
ously.
%Also observe the information on display mes- sages in TraPc Sign Assist ( page 463).
Warning when the maximum permissible speed is
exceeded
The system can warn you if you unintentionally exceed the maximum permissible speed. To do
this, you can specify in the multimedia system by how much the maximum permissible speed can
be exceeded before a warning is issued. You can
set the warning to visual only (the traPc sign
Oashes three times in the driver display) or visual
and acoustic, including a warning tone.
Additional functions of TraPc Sign Assist (coun-
try-speciNc)
Warning for no-entry signs: TraPc Sign Assist can
warn you if you drive the wrong way down a sec-
tion of road, for example on motorway slip roads or one-way streets.
Warning at pedestrian crossings (vehicles with
the Driving Assistance Package): if you approach
pedestrian crossings, provided that pedestrians
are in the danger zone or are moving towards it,
TraPc Sign Assist can warn you up to a speed of
approximately 70 km/h.
Warning at stop signs (vehicles with the Driving
Assistance Package): TraPc Sign Assist can warn
you up to a speed of approximately 70 km/h if you are about to drive past a stop sign uninten-
tionally. For this to be possible, the signs must be clear, for example if the system detects more thanone stop sign, or a stop sign can be conNrmed
using the digital navigation map. No warning canDriving and parking223

be issued if several diMerent signs with diMering
information have been detected.
Warning at red lights (vehicles with the Driving
Assistance Package): TraPc Sign Assist can warn
you up to a speed of approximately 70 km/h if you are about to drive through a red light uninten-
tionally.
The following conditions must be fulNlled
= Several traPc lights have been detected.
= All traPc lights detected are red.
= At least one of the red traPc lights detected is
on the front passenger side beside the vehi-
cle's own lane.
= The traPc lights are in the following sequence
(from top to bottom): red, yellow, green.%If the function is available, you can activate or deactivate the warnings at pedestrian cross- ings, stop signs and red lights in the TraPc
Sign Assist menu under Further warnings
( page 224).System limits
The system may be impaired or may not function
particularly in the following situations:
= If visibility is poor, e.g. due to insuPcient illu-
mination of the road, highly variable shade conditions, rain, snow, fog, swirling dust or
heavy spray.
= If there is glare, e.g. from oncoming traPc,
direct sunlight or reOections.
= If the windscreen in the area of the multifunc-
tion camera is dirty, or if the camera is misted
up, damaged or covered.
= If traPc signs are diPcult to detect, e.g.
because they are dirty, covered, faded, cov-
ered with ice, damaged, badly positioned,
poorly lit or twisted.
= Active traPc signs with LED displays may not
be detected correctly or at all due to technical
factors, such as transmission frequency.
= If the information on the navigation system's
digital map is incorrect, incomplete or out of
date.= If signs or the road layout is ambiguous, e.g.
traPc signs in roadworks, at exits and ramps,
in neighbouring lanes or parallel roads.
= If signs do not conform to the standard.
= If signs or road layouts are speciNc to the
country and deviate from the route guidance
in the navigation system, e.g. at or beyond construction sites.
= Aser sharp turns and tight bends, when traPc
signs are outside the camera's Neld of vision.
= If you overtake vehicles with traPc signs
which are aPxed or attached to them.
= If you are using transport equipment secured
to the vehicle with a trailer coupling, such as a bicycle rack, restrictions for car/trailer combi-
nations may be considered valid if applicable.

If a vehicle is detected in the monitoring range,
the red warning lamp lights up in the correspond- ing outside mirror.
If a vehicle occupant pulls the door handle on the side of the warning, a warning tone sounds twice
and the ambient lighting in the respective door
and the warning lamps in the corresponding out-
side mirror Oash red.%Vehicles with ambient lighting: the Warning
assistance of the ambient lighting can be
activated and deactivated ( page 137).%The warning assistance can diMer depending
on the equipment and may vary according to
the setting.
The exit warning is only available when Blind Spot
Assist is activated and up to a maximum of three
minutes aser the ignition has been switched oM.
The exit warning is no longer available once the warning lamp in the outside mirror Oashes three
times.
The exit warning is only an aid and not a substi- tute for the attention of vehicle occupants. Theresponsibility for opening and closing the doors
and for leaving the vehicle remains with the vehi- cle occupants.
System limits
Blind Spot Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist may be limited in the following situations, in particular:
= if there is dirt on the sensors or the sensors
are obscured
= in poor visibility, e.g. due to fog, heavy rain or
snow
= if there are narrow vehicles, e.g. bicycles or
motorbikes
= if the road has very wide or narrow lanes
= if vehicles are not driving in the middle of their
lane
Warnings may be issued in error when driving
close to crash barriers or similar continuous lane borders. Always make sure that there is suPcient
distance to the side for other traPc or obstacles.
Warnings may be interrupted when driving along-
side long vehicles, for example lorries, for a pro-
longed time.Blind Spot Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist are not operational when reverse gear is engaged.
Blind Spot Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist are
not operational if transport equipment, for exam-
ple a trailer or bicycle rack, is attached to the trailer hitch and the electrical connection has
been correctly established.
Additionally, the exit warning may be limited in the
following situations:
= when the sensors are covered by adjacent
vehicles in narrow parking spaces
= when people approach the vehicle
= in the event of stationary or slowly moving
objects
q Function of the brake application of Active
Blind Spot Assist%The brake application function is only availa-
ble for vehicles with a Driving Assistance
Package.
If Active Blind Spot Assist detects a risk of a side
impact in the monitoring range, a course-correct- ing brake application is carried out. This isdesigned to help you avoid a collision.
Driving and parking227

The course-correcting brake application is availa-ble in the speed range between approximately30 km/h and 200 km/h.&WARNING Risk of accident despite brake
application of Active Blind Spot Assist
A course-correcting brake application cannot
always prevent a collision.
Always steer, brake or accelerate your- self, especially if Active Blind Spot Assist
warns you or makes a course-correcting
brake application.Always maintain a safe distance at the
sides.&WARNING Risk of accident despite Active
Blind Spot Assist
Active Blind Spot Assist does not react in the following situations:
= If you overtake vehicles at a high speed.
= If vehicles approach and overtake you at a
greatly diMerent speed.
Active Blind Spot Assist may not give warnings
or intervene in such situations.Always pay careful attention to the traPc
situation and maintain a safe distance at
the side of the vehicle.
If a course-correcting brake application occurs, the red warning lamp Oashes in the outside mirror
and a warning tone sounds. In addition, a display 1 indicating the danger of a side collision
appears in the driver's display.
In rare cases, the system may make an inappro- priate brake application. This brake application
may be interrupted at any time if you steer slightly
in the opposite direction or accelerate.
System limits
Either a course-correcting brake application
appropriate to the driving situation, or none at all,
may occur especially in the following situations:
= Vehicles or obstacles, e.g. crash barriers, are
located on both sides of your vehicle.
= A vehicle approaches too closely on the side.
= You have adopted a sporty driving style with
high cornering speeds.
= You brake or accelerate signiNcantly.
= A driving safety system intervenes, e.g. ESP n
or Active Brake Assist.
= ESP n
is deactivated.
= A loss of tyre pressure or a defective tyre is
detected.
= Transport equipment, for example a trailer or
bicycle rack, is attached to the trailer hitch and the electrical connection has been cor-
rectly established.228Driving and parking
