will stop the tailgate. The automatic blockage
detection function is only an aid. It is not a substi-
tute for your attentiveness.
Closing the tailgate
&WARNING Risk of injury from unsecured
items in the vehicle
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured suPciently, they could slip, tip
over or be thrown around and thereby hit vehi-
cle occupants.
There is a risk of injury, particularly in the
event of sudden braking or a sudden change
in direction.
Always stow objects in such a way that
they cannot be thrown around.Before the journey, secure objects, lug-
gage or loads against slipping or tipping
over.Observe the notes on loading the vehicle.
Notes on closing the tailgate: your vehicle is
equipped with automatic key recognition. If a key
belonging to the vehicle is detected in the vehicle, the tailgate will not be locked.
Note that the tailgate will not be locked in the fol- lowing situation:
=
You have locked the vehicle and close the tail-
gate while a key belonging to the vehicle is inside the vehicle.
and
=
A second key belonging to the vehicle is not
detected outside the vehicle.
Automatic key recognition is only an aid and is not
a substitute for your attentiveness.
Before locking, ensure that at least one key
belonging to the vehicle is outside the vehicle.To close the tailgate: pull the tailgate down-
wards slightly. Release it as soon as it begins
to close.&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped dur-
ing automatic closing of the tailgate
Parts of the body could become trapped.
There may be people in the closing area.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the closing area during the closing
process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
= Press the - button on the key.
= Press or pull the remote operating switch
on the driver's door.
= Press the closing or locking button on the
tailgate.
= Pull the tailgate handle.
Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS: it is also
possible to stop the closing process by making a
kicking movement below the rear bumper.

Switch on the power supply or the ignition.Press remote operating switch 1 for the tail-
gate.Press closing button 1 on the tailgate.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO
Press locking button 2 on the tailgate.
If a key is detected outside the vehicle, the
tailgate will close and the vehicle will be
locked.Press and hold the - button on the key.
The key must be in the vicinity of the vehicle.Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESSMake a kicking movement with your foot
below the bumper (  page 81).
Automatic reversing function for the tailgate
The tailgate is equipped with automatic blockage
detection with a reversing function. If an obstacle
obstructs the tailgate during the automatic closing
process, it will automatically open again slightly.
Automatic blockage detection with the reversing function is only an aid and is not a substitute for
your attentiveness.
During the closing process, make sure that no
body parts are in the closing area.&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped
despite reversing function
The reversing function will not react:
= to sos, light and thin objects, e.g. Nngers.
= towards the end of the closing procedure.
In these situations in particular, the reversing
function cannot prevent someone being trap-
ped.

Make sure that no body parts are in the
closing area.
If someone is trapped, either:
= Press the - button on the key.
= Press or pull the remote operating switch
on the driver's door.
= Press the closing or locking button on the
tailgate.
= Pull the tailgate handle.
HANDS-FREE ACCESS function
With HANDS-FREE ACCESS you can open, close
or stop the closing process of the tailgate by per-
forming a kicking movement under the rear
bumper.
The kicking movement triggers the opening or
closing process alternately.
Observe the notes when opening (  page 78)
and closing (  page 79) the tailgate.%Two warning tones sound when the tailgate is
opening or closing.&WARNING Risk of burns caused by a hot
exhaust system
The vehicle exhaust system can become very hot. If you use HANDS-FREE ACCESS, you
could burn yourself by touching the exhaust
system.
Always ensure that you only make a kick-
ing movement within the detection range
of the sensors.*NOTE Vehicle damage due to uninten-
tional opening of the tailgate
= when using an automatic car wash
= when using a high pressure cleaner
Deactivate the function of the key in
these situations.
or
Make sure that the key is at a minimum
distance of 3 m away from the vehicle.
When making the kicking movement, make sure
that you are standing Nrmly on the ground. You
could otherwise lose your balance, e.g. on ice.
Observe the following notes: = The key is behind the vehicle.
= Stand at least 30 cm away from the vehicle
while performing the kicking movement.
= Do not come into contact with the bumper
while making the kicking movement.
= Do not carry out the kicking movement too
slowly.

=The kicking movement must be towards the
vehicle and back again.1Detection range of the sensors
If several consecutive kicking movements are not
successful, wait ten seconds.
System limits
The system may be impaired or may not function
in the following cases:
= The sensors are dirty, e.g. due to road salt or
snow.
= The kicking movement is made using a pros-
thetic leg.
The tailgate can open or close unintentionally in the following situations:
= A person's arms or legs are moving in the sen-
sor detection range, e.g. when polishing the
vehicle or picking up objects.
= Objects are moved or placed behind the vehi-
cle, e.g. tensioning straps or luggage.
= Clamping straps, tarpaulins or other coverings
are pulled over the bumper.
= A protective mat with a length reaching over
the boot sill down into the detection range of
the sensors is used.
= The protective mat is not secured correctly.
= Work is being done on the trailer hitch, trailers
or rear bicycle racks.
Deactivate the function of the key (  page 71) or
do not carry the key about your person in such situations.Limiting the opening angle of the tailgate
Activating the opening angle limiterYou can limit the opening angle of the tailgate in
the top half of its opening range up to a point
shortly before the end position.
Stop the opening procedure of the tailgate at
the desired position.Press and hold the closing button on the tail-
gate until you hear a short acoustic signal.
The opening angle limiter will be activated. The tailgate will then stop in the stored position
when opened.
To open the tailgate fully, pull the handle on the outside of the tailgate again aser it has stopped
automatically.
Deactivating the opening angle limiter
Press and hold the closing button on the tail-
gate until two short acoustic signals sound.82Opening and closing

Unlocking the tailgate with the emergency key
Requirements: = The rear seat backrest has been folded
forward.
= The load compartment cover has been
removed.
Remove the emergency key (  page 72).Insert emergency key 2 into opening 1 in
the trim and push it in. The tailgate will be unlocked.
Side windows
Opening and closing the side windows
&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when
opening a side window
When you open a side window, parts of the
body could be drawn in or become trapped
between the side window and window frame.
When opening, make sure that nobody is
touching the side window.If someone is trapped, release the but- ton immediately or pull it in order to
close the side window again.&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when
closing a side window
When closing a side window, body parts could
be trapped in the closing area in the process.
When closing, make sure that no body
parts are in the closing area.If someone is trapped, release the but- ton immediately or press the button in
order to reopen the side window.&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when
children operate the side windows
Children could become trapped if they operate
the side windows, particularly when unatten- ded.
Activate the child safety lock for the rear
side windows.When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle.Never leave children unattended in thevehicle.
Requirements: = The power supply or the ignition is switched
on.

The buttons on the driver's door take precedence.
To start automatic operation: press the 0062
button beyond the point of resistance or pull
and release it.To interrupt automatic operation: press or pull
the 0062 button again.When the vehicle is switched oM, you can con-
tinue to operate the side windows.
This function is available for around four minutes or until a front door is opened.
Automatic reversing function of the side windows
If an obstacle impedes a side window during the closing process, the side window will open againautomatically. The automatic reversing function is
only an aid and is not a substitute for your atten- tiveness.During the closing process, make sure that no
body parts are in the closing area.&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped
despite there being reversing protection
on the side window
The reversing function does not react:
= to sos, light and thin objects, e.g. Nngers.
= during resetting.
The reversing function cannot prevent some-
one from becoming trapped in these situa- tions.
During the closing process, make sure
that no body parts are in the closing
area.If someone becomes trapped, press the
0062 button to open the side window
again.
Automatic function of the side windows
In the following cases, the side windows will be
closed automatically when the vehicle is switched
oM
= if it starts to rain
Rain is detected by a rain sensor on the wind-
screen.
= in extreme temperatures
= aser a certain time (depending on the on-
board electrical system voltage)
= if there is a malfunction in the power supply
The side windows will be closed as far as the ven- tilation position.

Vehicles with a sliding sunroof: the side windows
will be closed completely if the sliding sunroof is open.
If the side windows are obstructed during auto-
matic closing, the side window concerned will
open again slightly. The automatic function for the sliding sunroof and the side windows will then bedeactivated.
Convenience opening (ventilating the vehicle
before starting a journey)
&WARNING Risk of entrapment when open-
ing a side window
When opening a side window, parts of the
body could be drawn in or become trapped
between the side window and window frame.
When opening, make sure that nobody is
touching the side window.Release the button immediately if some-
body becomes trapped.Press and hold the

To continue convenience closing: press and
hold the U button again.%Convenience closing also functions with KEY-
LESS-GO (  page 75).
Resolving problems with the side windows
&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped or
fatally injured if reversing protection is not
activated
If you close a side window again immediately aser it has been blocked, the side window will
close with increased or maximum force. The
reversing function is then not active and body
parts may become trapped.
Make sure that no parts of the body are
in the closing area.To stop the closing process, release the
button or press the button again to
reopen the side window.A side window cannot be closed and you cannot see the cause.Check to see whether any objects are in the
window guide.Adjust the side windows.
Adjusting the side windows
If a side window is obstructed during closing and
reopens again immediately:
Immediately aser this, pull and hold the corre-
sponding button again until the side window
has closed and hold the button for at least one
more second (re-adjustment).
The side window will be closed without the automatic reversing function.
If the side window is obstructed again and
reopens again immediately:
Immediately aser this, pull and hold the corre-
sponding button again until the side window
has closed and hold the button for at least one
more second (follow-up adjustment).
The side window will be closed without the
automatic reversing function.The side windows cannot be opened or closed
using the convenience opening feature.
Possible causes: = The key battery is weak or discharged.Check the battery using the indicator lamp
(  page 70).Replace the key battery, if necessary
(  page 72).
Sliding sunroof
Opening and closing the sliding sunroof
%The term "sliding sunroof" also refers to the
panorama sliding sunroof.&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when
the sliding sunroof is being opened and
closed
Body parts may become trapped in the range
of movement.

make sure that no body parts are in the
sweep of the sliding sunroof.If someone is trapped, release the con-
trol panel immediately.

ing sunroof is operated by children
Children operating the sliding sunroof could
get caught in the moving parts, particularly if
unattended.
Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle.&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when
the roller sunblind is being opened and
closed
Body parts may become trapped between the
roller sunblind and frame or sliding roof.
During the opening or closing process,
make sure that no body parts are in the
roller sunblind's range of movement.If someone is trapped, release the con-
trol panel immediately.

Touch the control panel during automatic
operation.
The opening/closing process will be stopped.*NOTE Malfunction due to snow and ice
Snow and ice may cause the sliding sunroof to
malfunction.
Open the sliding sunroof only if it is free
of snow and ice.*NOTE Damage caused by protruding
objects
Objects that protrude from the sliding sunroof
may damage the sealing strips.
Do not allow anything to protrude from
the sliding sunroof.*NOTE Damage to the panorama sliding
sunroof due to non-approved roof luggage
racks
The panorama sliding sunroof may be dam-
aged by the roof luggage rack if you attempt to
open it when using a roof luggage rack not
tested and approved for Mercedes-Benz.
When a roof luggage rack is Ntted, open
the panorama sliding sunroof only if this
has been tested and approved for
Mercedes-Benz.
The panorama sliding sunroof may be raised
to allow ventilation of the vehicle interior.

The sliding sunroof and the roller sunblind areoperated using control panel 1.

To open: swipe backwards across control
