Activating/deactivating the hazard warning lights

Press button 1.
The hazard warning lights will switch on automati-
call y if:
= the airbag has been deployed.
= the vehicle is braked heavily from a speed of
more than 70 km/h to a standstill. When you pull away again, the hazard warning
light sy

stem will switch oM automatically at
approximately 10 km/h. You can also switch oM
the hazard warning light system using the warning
lamp button. Adaptive functions of the DIGITAL LIGHT
Intelligent Light System function
In t

his system, the headlamps adapt to the driving
and weather situation. It also provides extended
functions for improved illumination of the road.
The system comprises the following functions: = Active headlamps ( page 138)
= Cornering light ( page 139)
= Motorway mode ( page 139)
= Enhanced fog light function ( page 139)
= Bad weather light ( page 140)
= City lighting ( page 140)
= Topographical compensation ( page 140)
The system is active only when it is dark. Active headlamps function
=
The headlam
ps follow the steering move-
ments.
= Relevant areas are better illuminated during a
journey.
The functions are active when the low beam is
switched on.
Depending on the vehicle's equipment, the course
of the lane in which you are driving will also be
evaluated and the active headlamps function will
adjust the light in advance. 138

Cornering light function
The cornering light improves the illumination of
t
he carriageway over a wide angle in the turning
direction, enabling better visibility on tight bends,
for example. The cornering light is activated only
when the low beam is switched on.
The function is active in the following cases:
= At speeds below 40 km/h when the turn sig-
nal light is switched on or the steering wheel
is turned
= At speeds between 40 km/h and 70 km/h
and when the steering wheel is turned Roundabout and junction function:
t
he cornering
light will be activated on both sides based on an
evaluation of the vehicle's current navigation posi-
tion. It will remain active until aser the vehicle has
les the roundabout or the junction.
Motorway mode function
Motorway mode increases the range and bright-
ness of the cone of light, enabling better visibility. The function will be active if a motorway journey
is de

tected by means of:
= the vehicle's speed
= the multifunction camera
= the navigation system The function is not active in the following cases:
= at speeds belo

w 80 km/h
Enhanced fog light function
The enhanced fog light function reduces self-daz-
zling and improves the illumination of the edge of
the carriageway. The function is automatically activated under the
f
ollowing conditions:
= At speeds below 70 km/h and when the rear
fog light is switched on. Light and sight
139

The function is automatically deactivated under
t he following conditions:
= When speeds greater than 100 km/h are
reached.
= When the rear fog light is switched oM.
Function of the bad weather light
The bad weather light reduces reOections in rainy
conditions by dimming individual areas of the
headlamps. The driver and other road users are
dazzled less as a result.
The city lighting function
City lighting improves the illumination of roadsides
in urban areas using a broad distribution of light.
The function is active in the following cases:
= At low speeds
= In illuminated parts of urban areas
Function of the topographical compensation
Based on available map data, the lighting system
responds pre-emptively to diMerent road heights.
This means that the headlamp range remains vir-
tually constant when you are driving on uphill or
downhill gradients. %
Only vehicles with a multimedia system with
na vigation have this function.
Assistance functions of the DIGITAL LIGHT
DIGIT
AL LIGHT visually expands on the driver
assistance systems by projecting the assistant
displays in front of the vehicle while it is in
motion. DIGITAL LIGHT can therefore help the
driver in critical situations.
% The availability of the functions is dependent
on t
he country.
% The assistance functions of the DIGITAL
LIGHT ar

e available on-demand ( page 22).
The system is active in the following cases:
= The light switc

h is in the X position.
= The high beam is switched on.
% Depending on the country in which you are
cur
rently driving, certain functions may be
disabled due to diMerent legal requirements,
even if they are enabled in the multimedia
system. When a border is crossed, the vehicle
will automatically adapt to the valid require-
ments. Spotlight
The spotlight function runs in the background and
Oashes t

he headlamps at detected persons within
the lane markings in four short bursts. The driver
is also made aware of the position of the person
by a symbol projection.
The function is active under the following condi-
tions:
= You are driving outside illuminated areas.
= The system detects a lane marking. 140

Warnings
If TraPc
Sign Assist detects a corresponding sit-
uation, a triangle will be projected onto the road
in the following situations at speeds of at least
30 km/h:
= You are driving in the opposite direction to the
permissible direction of travel, e.g. on a
motorway slip road.
= You are driving towards a stop sign without
reducing your speed.
= You are driving towards a red traPc light with-
out reducing your speed. Observe the system limitations of
T
raPc Sign
Assist ( page 259).
Notes If T
raPc
Sign Assist detects a roadworks zone,
the system will provide support as follows:
= A corresponding symbol will be projected onto
the road when you enter a roadworks zone.
= When you drive through a roadworks zone,
guide lines will be projected onto the road that
roughly match the width of the vehicle. The
guide lines will be suppressed for a while on
tight bends. Observe the system limitations of
T
raPc Sign
Assist ( page 259).
Collision warning Light and sight

If you fall below the safe distance at speeds of at
leas t 30 km/h, a collision warning symbol will be
projected onto the road.
Observe the system limitations of Active Brake
Assist ( page 253).
Lane change warning During assisted lane changes at speeds of at least
30 km/h

, the course of the lane change will be
brightened. This enables you to identify possible
dangers in the new lane at an early stage.
Observe the system limitations of Active Lane
Change Assist ( page 251). Lane keeping and blind spot warning
At speeds of at least 30 km/h, a triangle that indi-
cat

es a lane correction and its direction will be
projected onto the road in the following cases:
= The lane is les unintentionally.
Observe the system limitations of Active Lane
Keeping Assist ( page 266).
= You switch on the turn signal light while an
object or obstacle is in your blind spot.

WARNING Risk of accident despit
e Adap-
tive Highbeam Assist
Adaptive Highbeam Assist does not react to:
= r

oad users without lights, e.g. pedestrians
= road users with poor lighting, e.g. cyclists
= road users whose lighting is obstructed,
e.g. by a barrier
On very rare occasions, Adaptive Highbeam
Assist may fail to recognise other road users
with their own lighting, or may recognise them
too late. In these, or in similar situations, the automatic
high beam will no

t be deactivated or will be
activated despite the presence of other road
users.
Always observe the road and tr
aPc con-
ditions carefully and switch oM the high
beam in good time. Adaptive Highbeam Assist cannot take into
account r

oad, weather or traPc conditions.
Detection may be restricted in the following
cases:
= in poor visibility, e.g. fog, heavy rain or snow
= if there is dirt on the sensors or the sensors
are obscured
Adaptive Highbeam Assist is only an aid. You are
responsible for adjusting the vehicle's lighting to
the prevailing light, visibility and traPc conditions.
% Adaptive Highbeam Assist is available on
demand

( page 22). Adaptive Highbeam Assist automatically switches
be

tween the following types of light:

users in the high beam area. It does not dazzle
them but enables full high beam illumination for
the driver apart from the excluded vehicles. Highly
reOective signs are also illuminated with reduced
brightness.
At speeds below 25 km/h or when there is suP-
cient street lighting:
