Information on the permanent limiter
If t
he vehicle should never exceed a speciNc
speed (e.g. for driving in winter tyre mode), you
can set this speed with the permanent limiter.
You do this by limiting the speed between
160 km/h and 240 km/h in the multimedia sys-
tem ( page 239).
Shortly before the set speed is reached, it
appears in the driver's display. When you conNrm
the message, display messages no longer appear
until you switch oM the vehicle. The speed will
only be displayed again once the vehicle has been
restarted or if the set speed is changed.
The permanent limiter does not switch to passive
mode even during kickdown and the driven speed
remains below the set speed. Setting the speed limit for winter tyres

Function of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
DIS
TRONIC Active Distance Assist maintains the
set speed when driving freely. If vehicles are
detected ahead, the set distance is maintained, if
necessary until the vehicle comes to a standstill.
The vehicle accelerates or brakes depending on
the distance to the vehicle in front and the set
speed. The speed and distance to the vehicle in
front are set and saved using the steering wheel.

Assis
tance Package: if Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC has braked the vehicle to a standstill,
it can automatically follow the vehicle in front
when driving oM again within 30 seconds. If a criti-
cal situation is detected in the surrounding area
when driving oM, such as a person in the vehicle
path, a visual and acoustic warning is given indi-
cating that the driver must now take control of the
vehicle. The vehicle is not accelerated any further.

Adjust the driving speed to suit current
tr
aPc and weather conditions. Function of route-based speed adaptation
When A

ctive Distance Assist DISTRONIC is activa-
ted, the vehicle speed will be adapted accordingly
to the route events ahead. Depending on the drive
program selected, the vehicle negotiates a route
event ahead in a fuel-saving, comfortable or
dynamic manner. When the route event has been
passed, the vehicle accelerates again to the
stored speed. The set distance to the vehicle in front, vehicles detected ahead and speed restric-
tions ahead ar
e taken into account.
Route-based speed adaptation can be activated in
the multimedia system ( page 246).
The following route events are taken into account:= Bends
= Roundabouts
= T-junctions
= Turns and exits
= TraPc jams ahead (only with Live TraPc )
Also, the speed is reduced if the turn signal indi-
cator is switched on and one of the following sit-
uations is detected:
= Turning at junctions
= Driving on slowing-down lanes
= Driving on lanes adjacent to slowing-down
lanes
The driver is responsible for choosing the right
speed and observing other road users. This
applies in particular to junctions, roundabouts and traPc
lights, as r oute-based speed adaptation
does not brake the vehicle to a standstill.
If a corresponding route event is detected while
route guidance is active, the Nrst speed adjust-
ment is carried out automatically. If the turn signal
indicator is switched on, the selected route is
conNrmed and further speed adjustment is activa-
ted.
Speed adaptation is cancelled in the following
cases:
= If the turn signal indicator is switched oM
before the route event and it is therefore
assumed that the route event is not relevant
to the driver.
= If the driver depresses the accelerator or
brake pedal during the process.
System limits
Route-based speed adaptation does not take right
of way regulations into account. The driver is
responsible for complying with road traPc regula-
tions and driving at a suitable speed. Driving and parking

In diPcult
conditions, t he speed selection made
by the system may not always be suitable. This
applies to the following situations, forexample:
= the road's course not clearly visible
= Road narrowing
= varying maximum permissible speeds in indi-
vidual lanes, forexample at toll stations
= wet road surfaces, snow or ice
= If transport equipment, forexample a trailer or
bicycle rack, is attached to the trailer hitch
and the electrical connection has been cor-
rectly established.
In these situations the driver must intervene
accordingly. &

Active Stop-and-Go Assist requires you, as the
driver, to keep your hands on the steering wheel
at all times so that you are able to intervene at
any time to correct the course of the vehicle and
keep it in lane.
Observe the notes on driving systems and your
responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognise
dangers ( page 227).
Active Stop-and-Go Assist activates automatically
when all of the following conditions are met:
