Charge the battery.
Observe the notes inthe operating
instructions foryour battery charge r.
6 Refit the charge d battery.
To do so, follow the steps described
under "Removing the battery" in the
re ve rse order.
! Always conne ctthe battery in the order de-
scribed below. Never swap the terminal clamps.
You could otherwise damage the vehicle's elec-
tronics.
6 Switch off all electrical consumers.
6 Connect the positive terminal and
secure the cover.
6 Connect the negative terminal. 6
Connect the breather hose.
Make sure that the battery is fitted with
a stopper opposite the breather hose.
i If the power supply tothe battery has been
interrupted (e. g.it has been reconnected), you
must carry out the following tasks:

Risk of acid burns During the charging process, there is a risk
of acid burns due to the gases escaping
from th ebattery. Do not lean over the bat-

Jump-starting
If the battery is discharged, the engine can
be started from another vehicle using jump
leads. Forim proved accessibility, your ve-
hicle has been fitted with a positive and
negative contact in the eng ine compart-
ment.
Please note:
! Jump-starting must only be performed
when the engine and catalytic convert-
er are cold.
! Do not start the engine if the battery
has frozen. Let th ebattery thaw out
fir st.
! Jump-starting may only be performed
from batteries with the sam enominal
vol tage.
! Use jump leads for jump -starti ng.You
can obtain further information from a
qualified speci alistw orkshop, e.g. a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre. !
Avoid repeated and lengthy starting
at tem pts.
Never start the vehicle using a rapid battery
charger.
6 Make sure thatthe two vehicles do not
touch.
6 Switch off all electri cal consumers. 1

6 Run the donor vehicle's engine at idling
speed.
6 Connect negative terminal 4of the
donor battery to negative contact 3of
your vehicle using the jump lead. Start
wi th the donor battery.
6 Start the engine.
6 You can now switch electrical consum-

Practical advice
Towing
Comply with national regulations when
towing.
Having the vehicle carried away on a trans-
porter or trailer is pre ferable to towing it
away. We recommend the use of a rigid
towbar if towing is nec essary.
You may on lytow the vehicle a maximum
of 50 km. A maximum towing speed of
50 km /hmust not be exceeded. i
Deactivate the automatic locking while driv-
in gfunction when towi ng. You could otherwise
beco me locked out when pushi ngortowing the
vehicle.
! Vehicles wit hautomatic transmission
must not be tow-started.
! If th eengine does not start, try jump-
starting it ( =page 379).
! If the vehicle does not start after
jump-starting, have it towed to a quali-
fied specialist work shop, e.g. to a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.
! If the vehicle is to be towed for a longer
distance, only tow it with the rear axle
raised. !
If the vehicle has suffere dtransmission
damage, only tow it with the propeller
shaft disconnected.
! Before tow ing the vehicle, make sure
the battery isconnected and charged.
Otherwise, you will not be able to
switch on the ignition and will have
no steering and braki ngassistance.
! Shift the transmission to position N. Opening the front cover
The fixing points for the bolt-on towing eye
are located in the bumpers. They are locat-
ed under the cover on the right-hand side
when
viewed in the direction of travel both
at the front and the rear.
! Only secure the tow cable or towbar to the
towing eye.The vehicle could otherwi sebe
damaged. Towing
G
Risk of accident Tow the vehicle using a rigid
towbar if:
! the engine will not start
! there is a malfunction in the power sup-
ply or the vehicle's electrical sy stem
There is no power assistance for the steer-
ing when the engine is not running. Signifi-
ca ntly greater force is then needed to steer
the vehicle and to brake.
When towing or tow-starting another vehi-
cle, its weight should not be greater than the
permissible gross weight of your ve hicle. Po
ints to bear in mind Fitting the towing eye209en_d2.boo Seite

Fuses
The electrical fuses in your vehicle inter-
rupt the power supply to the equipment in
the event of a malfunction. This prevents
damage to the rest of the on-board
electri cs.
The following are available for changing
fuses ( =page 385):
! Fuse allocation chart
! Spare fuses
! Fuse extractor !
Only use fuses wi th thespec ifie d amperage
fo r the system inques tion, and which have been
ap proved for Mercede s-Be nz.Electrical parts or
sys tems could otherwise bedamaged.
Do not attempt to repair or bridge faul tyfuses.
Have the cause traced and recti fied at a qualified
specialist workshop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz Serv-
ic e Centre.
The electrical fuses are located in different
fus eboxes:
! Main fuse box onthe left of the dash-
boa rd (
=page 386).
! Fuse box in the engine compartment
on the left (
=page 386).
! Fuse box in the boot on the left
(
= page 387). Fuse allocation chart
The fuse allocation chart is located in the
cover of the main fuse box on the dash-
board (
=page 386) .The amperage of the
fuses is also given there. Spare fuses
Spare fuses can be found in the vehicle
tool kit (=
page 276). Fuse extractor
Coupé
The fuse extractor can be found in the cov-
er of the fuse box
inthe boot (
=page 387).
Cabriolet
The fuse extractor can be found in the ve-
hicle tool kit ( =pa ge 276). Fuses
