240 Operation
The first 1,500 km
You will find detailed information about
operating, maintaining and caring for your
vehicle in the "Operation" section. If you treat the engine with sufficient care
from the very start, it will reward you with
excellent performance for a very long peri-
od afterwards.
! You should therefore drive at varying
road and engine speeds for the first
1,50 0km.
! Avoid heavy loads during this time, e.g.
driving at full throttle. Do not exceed
2
/ 3 of the permissible maximum engine
speed for each gear (red area in the rev
cou nter).
! Change gea rin good time.
! Donot change down a gea rmanua lly in
order to brake.
Ve hic les wit hau tomatic transmission*
! Only use rang es 3,2or 1for slow driv-
ing, e.g. in mountainous terrain.
! It is best to use drive program Cfor
comfort mode. Vehicles wit
hautomatic transmission*
! Tryt o avoid depressing the accelerator
pedal beyond the pressure point (kick-
down).
After 1,500 km you may gradually bring
the veh icle up to full road and engine
speeds.
Additional driving tips for AM Gveh icles
! Do not exceed 140 km /hduring the
first 1,500 km.
! Only bring the engine up to the maxi-
mum engine speed of 4,50 0rpm for
sh ort periods.
i Theseguidelines also apply if a new engine
or rear-axle differential has bee nfitted to your
vehicle. Th

6 Replace the fuel filler cap. Close it by
turning it clockwise.
The fuel filler cap engages audibly.
6 Close the fuel filler flap. The catch en-

fill ing station attendant.
CLK 200 Kompressor, CLK 240, CLK 320,
CLK 500:
Premium unleaded petrol with a minimum
octane rating of 95 RO N/85 MON.
i As a very temporary meas ure, you may
also use regular un leaded petrol, 91 RON /
82.5 MON. This may reduce power and increase
petrol consumption. Avoid the use of full throttle. Refuelling

Risk ofinjury Fuel is highly flammable. Fire, naked flames
and smoking are prohibited when fuel is be-
ing handled.

! The following mayle ad to increased wear or
engine damage:
! The use ofpetrol which does not com ply with

! The useof fuel additives
The use offue lsand /orfuel addit iveswhich
have not been approved may result inlimitation
of warrant yrights. Leaded petrol
You may fill up
with leaded petrol incoun-
tries where unleaded petrol is not availa-
ble. This shortens the interval for replacing
spark pl ugs to 20,000 km.
6 Consult a Mercedes-Benz Service
Centre before using leaded petrol.
! Leaded petrol damages the catalytic con-
verter and the Lambda probe.
If you exceed theinte rval for replacing the spark
plu gs, this ma y cause increased wear and engine
damage.
You may obtain furthe rinformation from any
Mercede s-Be nz Service Centre. i
You will generally find inf ormation about the
diesel grade on the filling pump. If not, askth e
filling station attenda nt.
We recommend having the engine oil
change devery 7,500 km in countries
where only diesel fuel with a sulphur con-
tent exceeding 0.5 percent by weight is
available.
! Use of the following may lead toincreased
we ar or engine damage:
! Diesel which does not compl ywith EN 590
! Marine diesel fuel
! Heating oil
! Vegetable oil methyl ester (VOME)
! Fuel additives ("b iodiesel", FAME fue ls)

Low outside temperatures
To prevent operating problems, diesel with
improved cold flow qualities is available
dur ing the winter months.
You can use winter diesel at temperatures
down to about –20 °C without problems.
To improve flow properties, it is possible to
mix diesel with kerosene and flow improv-
er.
The mixing ratio depends on the type of
diesel and the outside temperature. How-
ever, it should be kept as low as possible.
! Do not mix diesel with petrol. This would
dam aget he fuel system. 6
Add a maximum of 50% kerosene or
flow improver to the diesel.
6 Only mix diesel with kerosene in a con-
tainer that has been approved for hold-
ing fuels; do not mix them in the fuel
tank.
6 Put the kerosene into the container
first, then add the diesel.
After a few minutes' driving, the mix-
ture spreads to all parts of the fuel
system. G

which carries a high voltage. For this reason,
you must ne ver tou chanyign ition sy stem

Operation
Engine compartment
There is no need for you to check the oil
level in the autom atictransmission. In the
event of oil loss or problems with gear
shifts, have the automatic tr ansmiss ion
checked at a qualified specialist workshop,
e.g. at a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.
Coolant is a mixture of water, antifreeze
and corrosion inhibitor. Only check the
coolant level when the vehicle is standing
on a level surface and the engine has
cooled down.
The expansion tank is located in the engine
compartment on the right-hand side when
vi ewed inthe direction of travel. 1
Expans ion tank
6 Slowly unscrew the cap by about one
half turn and allow exc esspr essure to
escape.
6 Then continue to unscrew the cap and
rem ove it.
6 The coolant level is correct if:
! when the coolant is cold, it reaches
the mark inthe expansion tank filler
neck
! when the coolant is hot, it reaches
approximately 1.5 cm higher 6
Top up the coolant in the filler neck if
necessary.
6 Rep lace th e cap by tur ningitt o the
