Problem
Possible causes/consequences and P Solutions
The engine is not running
smoothly and is misfir-
ing. There is a malfunction in the engine electronics or in a mechanical
component of the engine management system. X
Only depress the accelerator pedal slightly.
Otherwise, non-combusted fuel may get into the catalytic converter
and damage it. X
Have the cause rectified immediately at a qualified specialist work-
shop.
The coolant temperature
gauge shows a value
above 248 ‡ (120 †). The coolant level is too low. The coolant is too hot and the engine is no
longer being cooled sufficiently. X
Stop as soon as possible and allow the engine and the coolant to
cool down. X
Check the coolant level ( Y
page 268). Observe the warning notes
as you do so and add coolant if necessary.
Automatic transmission
Important safety notes
G WARNING
If the engine speed is above the idling speed
and you engage transmission position D or R ,
the vehicle could pull away suddenly. There is
a risk of an accident.
When engaging transmission position D or R ,
always firmly depress the brake pedal and do
not simultaneously accelerate.
G WARNING
The automatic transmission switches to neu-
tral position N when you switch off the engine.
The vehicle may roll away. There is a risk of an
accident.
After switching off the engine, always switch
to parking position P . Prevent the parked vehi-
cle from rolling away by applying the parking
brake. Selector lever (Mercedes-AMG vehi-
cles)

Certain component s in th e engin e compart-
ment, suc h as th e engine, radiato r and part s
of th e exhaust system, can become ver y hot .
Working in th e engin e compartmen t poses a
ris k of injury.
Wher e possible, let th e engin e cool down and
touch only th e component s described in th e
following.
G WARNIN G
The engin e compartmen t contain s moving
components. Certain components, suc h as
th e radiato r fan , may continu e to run or start
again suddenly when th e ignition is off . There
is a ris k of injury.
If you need to do any wor k inside th e engin e
compartment: R
switch off th e ignitionR
never reac h int o th e area wher e there is a
ris k of danger from moving components,

ple, away from moving part s
G WARNIN G
The coolin g system is pressurized, particularly
when th e motor is warm . If you open th e cap ,
you could be scalded if hot coolan t sprays out .
There is a ris k of injury.
Let th e engin e cool down before you open th e
cap . Wear gloves and eye protection . Slowly
open th e cap to reliev e pressure.
G WARNIN G
Opening th e hoo d when th e engin e is over-
heated or when there is a fir e in th e engin e
compartmen t could expos e you to hot gase s
or other servic e products . There is a ris k of
injury. Let an overheate d engin e cool down before
opening th e hood. If there is a fir e in th e
engin e compartment, keep th e hoo d closed
and contact th e fir e department.
Checking coolant level
Exampl e X
Park th e vehicl e on a level surface.
Only chec k th e coolan t level when th e vehicl e
is on a level surfac e and th e engin e has cooled
down . X
Turn th e SmartKey to position 2 in th e ignition
loc k ( Y
page 123).
or X
On vehicles wit h KEYLESS-GO , press th e
Start/Sto p butto n twice ( Y

X
If necessary, add coolant that has been tested
and approved by Mercedes-Benz. X
Replace cap C and turn it clockwise as far as
it will go.
For further information on coolant, see
( Y
page 326).
Adding washer fluid to the windshield
washer system/headlamp cleaning
system
G WARNING
Windshield washer concentrate could ignite if
it comes into contact with hot engine compo-
nents or the exhaust system. There is a risk of
fire and injury.
Make sure that no windshield washer con-
centrate is spilled next to the filler neck.
Example X
To open: pull cap C upwards by the tab.X
Add the premixed washer fluid. X
To close: press cap C onto the filler neck
until it engages.
If the washer fluid level drops below the recom-
mended minimum fluid level of 1.1 US qt
(1.0 liter), a message appears in the multifunc-
tion display prompting you to add washer fluid
( Y
page 225).
Further information on washer fluid
( Y
page 327). Maintenance
ASSYST PLUS
Service messages The ASSYST PLUS service interval display
informs you of the next service due date.
Information on the type of service and service
intervals (see the separate Maintenance Book-
let).
You can obtain further information from an
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center or at
http://www.mbusa.com (USA only).
The ASSYST PLUS service interval display does
not show any information on the engine oil level.
Observe the notes on the engine oil level
( Y
page 267).
The multifunction display shows a service mes-
sage for several seconds, e.g.: R
Service A in .. Days R
Service A Due R
Service A Overdue by .. Days
Depending on the operating conditions of the
vehicle, the remaining time or distance until the
next service due date is displayed.
The letter A or B , possibly in connection with a
number or another letter, shows the type of ser-
vice. A stands for a minor service and B for a
major service.
You can obtain further information from an
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
The ASSYST PLUS service interval display does
not take into account any periods of time during
which the battery is disconnected.
Maintaining the time-dependent service sched-
ule: X
Note down the service due date displayed in
the multifunction display before disconnect-
ing the battery.
or X
After reconnecting the battery, subtract the
battery disconnection periods from the ser-
vice date shown on the display.
Hiding a service message X

The coolant is a mixture of water and anti-
freeze/corrosion inhibitor. It performs the fol-
lowing tasks: R
Anti-corrosion protection R
Antifreeze protection R
Raising the boiling point
If the coolant has antifreeze protection down to
-35 ‡ (-37 †), the boiling point of the coolant
during operation is approximately 266 ‡
(130 †).
The antifreeze concentrate/corrosion inhibitor
concentration in the engine cooling system
should: R
be at least 50%. This will protect the engine
cooling system against freezing down to
approximately -35 ‡ (-37 †). R
not exceed 55% (antifreeze protection down
to -49 ‡[ -45 †]) . Otherwise , hea t will no t be
dissipated as effectively.
Mercedes-Ben z recommends an antifreeze/
corrosion inhibitor concentrat e in accordance
wit h MB Specification s fo r Servic e Products
310.1.
i Whe n th e vehicle is first delivered, it is filled
wit h a coolan t mixture that ensures adequat e
antifreez e an d anti-corrosio n protection .
i The coolan t is checke d wit h ever y mainte-
nanc e interval at a qualifie d specialis t work-
shop.
