Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the
battery replaced at a qualiNed specialist work-
shop.Remove the emergency key element
(  page 68).Press release knob 2 down fully and slide
cover 1 in the direction of the arrow.Fold out cover 1 in the direction of the arrow
and remove.Remove battery compartment 3 and take
out the discharged battery.Insert the new battery into battery compart-
ment 3. Observe the positive pole marking inthe battery compartment and on the battery
when doing this.Push in battery compartment 3.Re-attach cover 1 and push it until it
engages.
Problems with the SmartKey, troubleshooting
You can no longer lock or unlock the vehicle
Possible causes: = The SmartKey battery is weak or discharged.
Check the battery using the indicator lamp
(  page 66).Replace the SmartKey battery, if necessary
(  page 68).Use the replacement key.Use the emergency key to lock or unlock
(  page 73).Have the SmartKey checked at a qualiNed spe-
cialist workshop.There is interference from a powerful radio signal
source
Possible causes if the function of the SmartKey is impaired:
= high voltage power lines
= mobile phones
= electronic devices (notebooks, tablets)
= shielding due to metallic objects or induction
loops for electrical gate systems or automatic
barriersMake sure that there is suPcient distance
between the SmartKey and the potential
source of interference.
You have lost a SmartKey.
Have the SmartKey deactivated at a qualiNed
specialist workshop.If necessary, have the mechanical lock
replaced as well.Opening and closing69

Doors
Unlocking/opening the doors from the inside
To unlock and open a front door: pull door
handle 2.
Locking pin 1 pops up when the door is
unlocked.To unlock a rear door: pull the rear door han-
dle.
The locking pin pops up when the rear door is
unlocked.To open a rear door: pull the rear door handle
again.
Centrally locking and unlocking the vehicle from the inside
To unlock: press button 1.To lock: press button 2.\bThe buttons are also on the front passenger
door.
This does not lock or unlock the fuel Nller Oap.
The vehicle will not be unlocked: = if you have locked the vehicle using the key
= if you have locked the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO
Locking/unlocking the vehicle with KEYLESS-GO
Requirements
= The SmartKey is outside the vehicle.
= The distance between the SmartKey and the
vehicle does not exceed 3 s (1 m).
= The driver\bs door and the door on which the
door handle is operated are closed.

Deactivate the function of the SmartKey
in these situations.
or
Make sure that the SmartKey is at a min-
imum distance of 10 s (3 m) away from
the vehicle.
Observe the notes:
= on washing the vehicle in a car wash
(  page 287)
= on using a high-pressure cleaner
(  page 288)
To unlock the vehicle: touch the inner surface
of the door handle.To lock the vehicle: touch sensor surface 1
or 2 .Convenience closing: touch recessed sensor
surface 2 until the closing process has been
completed.\bFurther information on convenience closing (  page 81).
If you open the trunk lid from outside, the trunk
lid is automatically unlocked.
Problems with KEYLESS-GO, troubleshooting
You can no longer lock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-GO
Possible causes: = The function of the SmartKey has been deacti-
vated.
= The SmartKey battery is weak or discharged.
Activate the function of the SmartKey
(  page 67).Check the battery using the indicator lamp
(  page 66).Replace the SmartKey battery, if necessary
(  page 68).Use the replacement SmartKey.Use the emergency key to lock or unlock

Possible causes if the function of KEYLESS-GO is
impaired:

barriers
Make sure that there is suPcient distance
between the SmartKey and the potential
source of interference.
Activating/deactivating the automatic locking fea- ture
The vehicle is locked automatically when the vehi-
cle is switched on and the wheels are turning
faster than walking pace.
To activate: press and hold button 2 for
approximately Nve seconds until an acoustic
signal sounds.To deactivate: press and hold button 1 for
approximately Nve seconds until an acoustic
signal sounds.In the following situations, there is a danger of
being locked out when the function is activated:
= while the vehicle is being tow-started or
pushed
= if the vehicle is being tested on a roller dyna-
mometer
Power closing function
&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when
the doors close automatically
Body parts or objects can become trapped, causing injuries.
Ensure that no body parts or objects are
in the closing area.Automatic closing of the doors can be
canceled by pulling the outer or inner
door handle.
If you push the door into the lock to the Nrst
detent position, the power closing function will
automatically pull the door into the lock.

Locking/unlocking the driver\bs door with the
emergency key\bIf you wish to lock the vehicle entirely using
the emergency key, Nrst press the button for
locking from the inside while the driver\bs door is open. Then proceed to lock the driver\bs
door using the emergency key.\bIf you unlock and open the driver\bs door with the emergency key, this triggers the burglar
alarm system.Remove the emergency key (  page 68).Insert the emergency key as far as it will go
into opening 1 in the cover.Pull and hold the door handle.Pull the cover on the emergency key as
straight as possible away from the vehicle until
it releases.Release the door handle.To unlock: turn the emergency key counter-
clockwise to position G.To lock: turn the emergency key clockwise to
position G.Carefully press the cover onto the lock cylin-
der until it engages and is seated Nrmly.Opening and closing73

Trunk
Opening the trunk lid
&DANGER Risk of exhaust gas poisoning
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the trunk
lid is open when the engine is running, espe-
cially if the vehicle is in motion.
Always switch oM the engine before
opening the trunk lid.Never drive with the trunk lid open.*NOTE Damage to the trunk lid by obsta-
cles above the vehicle
The trunk lid swings upwards when it is
opened.
Therefore, make sure that there is suP-
cient clearance above the trunk lid.Pull the trunk lid handle.Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS: Make a
kicking movement with your foot below the
bumper (  page 77).
Vehicles with trunk lid convenience closing
Pull remote operating switch 1 until the
trunk lid opens.

There is a risk of injury, particularly in the
event of sudden braking or a sudden change
in direction.Always stow objects in such a way that
they cannot be thrown around.Before the journey, secure objects, lug-
gage or loads against slipping or tipping
over.Observe the notes on loading the vehicle.
Notes on closing the trunk lid: your vehicle is
equipped with automatic SmartKey recognition. If
a SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is detected in
the vehicle, the trunk lid will not be locked and will pop open again.
Note that the trunk lid will not be locked if the fol- lowing situation occurs:
= You have locked the vehicle and close the
trunk lid while a SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is inside the vehicle.
and
= A second SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is
not detected outside the vehicle.
Automatic SmartKey recognition is only an aidand is not a substitute for your attentiveness.Before locking, ensure that at least one
SmartKey belonging to the vehicle is outside the vehicle.To close the trunk lid: pull the trunk lid down-
wards using the handle recess and push it
closed.
Vehicles with trunk lid convenience closing
&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped dur-
ing automatic closing of the trunk lid
Parts of the body could become trapped.
There may be people in the closing area.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the closing area during the closing
process.Use one of the following options to stop
the closing process:
= Press the

Push remote operating switch 1 until the
trunk lid is fully closed.Press closing button 1 on the trunk lid.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO
Press locking button 2 on the trunk lid.
If a SmartKey is detected outside the vehicle,
the trunk lid will close and the vehicle will be
locked.With the trunk lid completely open, press and hold the

In these situations in particular, the reversing
function cannot prevent someone being trap-
ped.Ensure that no body parts are in the closing area.If someone is trapped, use one of the fol-
lowing options:
= Press the

Make sure that the SmartKey is at a min-
imum distance of 10 s (3 m) away from
the vehicle.
When making the kicking movement, make sure
that you are standing Nrmly on the ground. You
could otherwise lose your balance, e.g. on ice.
Observe the following notes: = The key is behind the vehicle.
= Stand at least 12 in (30 cm) away from the
vehicle while performing the kicking move-ment.
= Do not come into contact with the bumper
while making the kicking movement.
= Do not carry out the kicking movement too
slowly.
= The kicking movement must be towards the
vehicle and back again.
1Detection range of the sensors
If several consecutive kicking movements are not
successful, wait ten seconds.
System limits
The system may be impaired or may not function
in the following cases:
= The sensors are dirty, e.g. due to road salt or
snow.
= The kicking movement is made using a pros-
thetic leg.
The trunk lid could be opened or closed uninten- tionally, in the following situations:
= A person\bs arms or legs are moving in the sen-
sor detection range, e.g. when polishing the
vehicle or picking up objects.
= Objects are moved or placed behind the vehi-
cle, e.g. the hose of a fuel dispenser, a charg-ing cable or luggage
= Clamping straps, tarp or other coverings are
pulled over the bumper.
= A protective mat with a length reaching over
the trunk sill down into the detection range of the sensors is used.
= The protective mat is not secured correctly.
Deactivate the function of the key (  page 67) or
do not carry the key about your person in such situations.
Switching separate trunk locking on or oM
If you centrally unlock the vehicle while separate
locking is activated, the trunk will remain locked.
