System malfunction
If the rear view camera is not operational, the
System Inoperative message appears in the
media display.
System limits
The rear view camera will not function or will func-
tion only partially in the following situations:
= The trunk lid is open.
= The weather conditions are poor, e.g. heavy
rain, snow, fog, storm or spray.
= The ambient light is poor, e.g. at night.
=Cameras, or vehicle components in which the
cameras are installed, are damaged, dirty or
covered. Observe the information on vehicle
sensors and cameras (  page 171).\bDo not use the rear view camera in these
types of situations. You could otherwise injure
others or collide with objects when parking
the vehicle.\bThe contrast of the display may be impaired
by direct sunlight or by other light sources, e.g. when driving out of a garage. In this case,
pay particular attention.\bHave the display repaired or replaced if, forexample, pixel errors considerably restrict
its use.
360° camera

q Function of the 360° Camera
The 360° Camera is a system that consists of
four cameras that cover the immediate surround- ings of the vehicle. The system assists you whenyou are parking or at exits with reduced visibility,forexample.
The views of the 360° Camera are always availa-ble when the vehicle is being driven forwards up
to a speed of approx. 10 mph (16 km/h) and when it is being backed up.
The 360° Camera is only an aid and may show a
distorted view of obstacles, show them incorrectly
or not show them at all. It is not a substitute for
your attention to the surroundings. Responsibility
for safe maneuvering and parking remains with you. Make sure that there are no persons, animals
or objects etc., in the maneuvering area while
maneuvering and parking.
The system evaluates images from the following
cameras:
= Rear view camera
= Front camera

Function of the guide lines
Guide lines are also displayed in the camera
images of the top views. These are based on the
current steering angle and show the distance to
objects and other vehicles.1Guide lines at a distance of approximately 1.6 s (0.5 m), 3.3 s (1.0 m), 5 s (1.5 m) and

The guide lines show the distances to your
vehicle. The distances apply to road level.
In all views, the Parking Assist PARKTRONIC warn-
ing display is also shown (  page 212).
The color of warning display changes dynamically and is based on the distance to the detected
obstacle:
= Blue: no obstacles detected at a distance less
than 3.3 s (1.0 m)
= Yellow: obstacles at a distance between
approximately 2.3 s (0.7 m) and 3.3 s (1.0 m)
= Orange: obstacles at a distance between
approximately 1.3 s (0.4 m) and 2.3 s (0.7 m)
= Red: obstacles at a very short distance of
approximately 1.3 s (0.4 m) or less

seen in this view.
System limits
If the system is not ready for operation, the Sys-
tem Inoperative message appears in the media
display.
The 360° Camera will not function or will function
only partially in the following situations:
= You are driving forwards at a speed greater
than approximately 10 mph (16 km/h).
= The doors are open.
= An outside mirror is not completely folded out.
= The trunk lid is open.
= The weather conditions are poor, e.g. heavy
rain, snow, fog, storm or spray.

=The ambient light is poor, e.g. at night.
= The camera lens is obstructed, dirty or fogged
up.
= If cameras or vehicle components in which the
cameras are installed are damaged. In this event, have the cameras, their positions andtheir setting checked at a qualiNed specialist
workshop.\bDo not use the 360° Camera under such cir-
cumstances. You could otherwise injure oth-
ers or collide with objects when parking the vehicle.
For technical reasons, the standard height of thevehicle may be altered if the vehicle is carrying a
heavy load and can result in inaccuracies in the
guide lines and in the display of the generated
images.
The Neld of vision and other functions of the cam-
era system may be restricted due to additional attachments on the vehicle (e.g. license plate
bracket, bicycle rack).
\bThe contrast of the display may be impaired
by abrupt, direct sunlight or by other lightsources, e.g. when you are driving out of a
garage. In this case, pay particular attention.\bHave the display repaired or replaced if, forexample, pixel errors considerably restrict
its use.

Engage reverse gear.Select the desired view in the multimedia sys- tem (  page 209).If the image from the rear view camera is not
shown aser reverse gear is engaged: switch
oM the vehicle, press and hold the E but-
ton, switch on the vehicle and engage reverse gear again.

qFunction of Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is an electronic park-
ing assistance system that monitors the area sur-
rounding your vehicle and shows you the distance
between the vehicle and a detected obstacle visu-
ally and audibly.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is only an aid. It is
not a substitute for your attention to the surround- ings. The responsibility for safe maneuvering andparking remains with you. Make sure that there
are no persons, animals or objects in the maneu- vering area while maneuvering and parking.

The passive side impact protection also warns you
of obstacles to the side. During the parking proce- dure or maneuvering, obstacles are detected as
the vehicle drives past. If you steer in the direc- tion of a detected obstacle and there is a risk of a
lateral collision, a warning is issued. In order for an object on the side to be detected, the sensorsin the front or rear bumper must Nrst detect the
object as you are driving past it.
In order for front or rear obstacles to the side to be displayed, the vehicle must Nrst travel a dis-
tance of at least half a vehicle length. Once the vehicle has traveled one vehicle length, obstacles
on all sides can be shown.Displays on the media display

As soon as Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is opera-

The color of the display changes depending on the distance to the detected obstacle:
= Blue: > 3.3 s (1 m) (no obstacles detected)
= Yellow: approximately 3.3 s (1 m) - 2.3 s
(0.7 m)
= Orange: approximately 2.3 s (0.7 m) - 1.2 s
(0.4 m)
= Red: < 1.2 s (0.4 m)
Vehicles with 360° camera: the boundary line
shiss dynamically depending on the position and
distance of the obstacles detected.
Depending on the distance to the obstacle detec-
ted, an intermittent warning tone also sounds. You
can set the timing of the warnings in the multime-
dia system (  page 216).

Standard setting:= Front and sides: < 1.2 s (0.4 m)
= Rear: < 3.3 s (1 m)

A continuous warning tone sounds from a dis-
tance of approximately 0.7 s (0.2 m), regardless
of the selected setting.

If an obstacle is detected in the vehicle\bs path andthe Camera & Parking menu is not open on the
media display, pop-up window 1 will appear:
= Vehicles without Active Parking Assist: at
speeds below 8 mph (12 km/h)
= Vehicles with Active Parking Assist: at speeds
below 11 mph (18 km/h)Optionally, obstacles detected by Parking Assist
PARKTRONIC from a distance of approximately 3.3 s (1.0 m) in front 2 and 2.3 s (0.7 m) at the
sides 3 can also be displayed on the head-up
display.
System limits
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC does not necessarily
take into account the following obstacles:
= Obstacles below the detection range, e.g. per-
sons, animals or objects.
= Obstacles above the detection range, e.g.
overhanging loads, overhangs or loading
ramps of trucks.

=Pedestrians or animals approaching the vehi-
cle from the side.
= Objects placed next to the vehicle
Obstacles on the sides are not shown in the fol- lowing situations, for example:
= You park the vehicle and switch it oM.
= You open the doors.
Aser an engine start, obstacles must be detected
again by driving past them before a warning can be issued.
Observe the information on vehicle sensors and
cameras; the system may otherwise not function

Active Parking Assist

qFunction of Active Parking Assist
Active Parking Assist is an electronic parking
assistance system, which uses ultrasound with the assistance of the rear view camera and 360°
camera. When you are driving forwards up to
approximately 22 mph (35 km/h), the system
automatically measures parking spaces on both
sides of the vehicle.
Active Parking Assist oMers the following func-
tions:
Vehicles with rear view camera
= Parking in parking spaces parallel to the road
Vehicles with 360° Camera
= Parking in parking spaces parallel to the road
= Parking in parking spaces perpendicular to the
road (optionally either forwards or reverse)
= Parking in parking spaces that can only be
detected as such due to markings (forexample
at the roadside)
= Exiting parking spaces if you have parked
using Active Parking Assist
As soon as all requirements are met for searching for parking spaces, the Ç display appears in
the Instrument Display.
When Active Parking Assist has detected parking
spaces, the È display appears in the Instru-
ment Display. The arrows show on which side of
the road detected parking spaces are located.
They are then shown in the media display.
Vehicles with rear view camera: the parking space
can be selected as desired. The vehicle is parked in reverse.
Vehicles with 360° Camera: the parking space
can be selected as desired. Depending on the location of the parking space, the parking direc-
tion (rearwards or forwards) can also be selected
as desired.When Active Parking Assist is activated, the turn signal indicators are activated based on the calcu-
lated path of your vehicle.
The parking procedure is assisted by accelerating,braking, steering and gear changes.
Active Parking Assist is only an aid. It is not a sub- stitute for your attention to the surroundings. The
responsibility for safe maneuvering and parking
remains with you. Make sure that no persons, ani- mals or objects etc. are in the maneuvering range.
Active Parking Assist will be canceled in the fol- lowing situations:
= Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is deactivated.
= You begin steering.
= You engage transmission position ].
= ESP n
intervenes.
= You open the driver\bs door.
= Aser activating Active Parking Assist, you
press the E button again (  page 218).Driving and parking217

If the exterior lighting is malfunctioning, Active Parking Assist is not available.
Objects located above or below the detection
range of the sensors, e.g. overhanging loads,
overhangs or loading ramps of goods vehicles, or the borders of parking spaces, are not detected
during measurement of the parking space. These
are also then not taken into account when calcu-
lating the parking procedure. In some circumstan-
ces, Active Parking Assist may therefore guide you into the parking space incorrectly.&WARNING Risk of accident due to objects
located above or below the detection range of Active Parking Assist
If there are objects above or below the detec-
tion range, the following situations may arise:
= Active Parking Assist may steer too early.
= The vehicle may not stop in front of these
objects.
There is a danger of collision!
In these situations, do not use Active Parking Assist.
Extreme weather conditions, suchas snow or heavy rain, may lead to a parking space beingmeasured inaccurately. Parking spaces that are
partially occupied by trailer drawbars might not be
identiNed as such or be measured incorrectly.
Only use Active Parking Assist on level, high-grip
ground.
Do not use Active Parking Assist in the following
situations:
= In extreme weather conditions suchas ice,
packed snow or in heavy rain.
= When transporting a load that protrudes
beyond the vehicle.
= On steep uphill or downhill gradients of more
than approximately 15 %.
= When snow chains are installed.
= Directly aser a tire change or when spare tires
are installed.
= If the tire pressure is too low or too high.
=If the suspension is out of alignment, e.g. aser
bottoming out on a curb.
Active Parking Assist may also display parking
spaces that are not suitable for parking, suchas:
= Parking spaces where parking is prohibited.
= Parking spaces on unsuitable surfaces.
