Depending on the selected recuperation le vel,the
electric mo tors are operated as an alternator
when in overrun mode and during braking in order to
charge the high-voltage battery while driving.
As soon as youta ke your foot o. the accelerator
pedal when theve hicle is in motion and in trans-
mission position h,recuperation in overrun
mode is initiated.
The higher there cuperation, the more sharply the
ve hicle is braked when coasting and the more
electrical energy is fed into the high-voltage bat-
te ry.
The recuperative brake system has thefo llowing
ch aracteristics:
R supports braking with elect ronically cont rolled
brake forc e boosting
R con verts th e kinetic energy of theve hicle into
elect ric energy
% Ifyo u brake hard, the mechanical brake is
also used. This means that the maximum
re cuperative energy cannot be reco vered. The
more you drive and brake in an anticipatory
manner, the more e1cient lyenergy can be

The braking e.ect of the electric mo tor during
re cuperation in overrun mode may be reduced or
may not be available at all in thefo llowing situa-
tions:
R when the high-voltage battery charge level
increases
R ifth e high-voltage battery is not yet at a nor-
mal operating temp erature
In these cases, the desired deceleration is set by
th e brake control system.

When theve hicle nears an event, ECO Assist will
calculate the optimal speed for minimal energy
consum ption based on the distance and speed.
"Foot o. the accelerator" recommendation 3will
appear on the inst rument displa y. If
yo uta ke your foot o. the accelerator pedal in
good time, there maining segments on the display
will successively turn green until theev ent shown
is reached. The driv etra in will be set for minimal
energy consum ption. The vehicle will recuperate
autonomously and thus charge the high-voltage
batter y.
% You can also manually increase or reduce
re cuperation. Ho wever, ECO Assist is availa-
ble only in thehà setting (/ page 158).
If th ere is no response to"Foot o. the accelera-
to r" recommendation 3,the segments will
re main white.
The event will be shown for a short time aTer it
has been passed.
If th eev ent in volves a vehicle in front, the symbol
will be shown in green as soon as there is a
re sponse to"Foot o. the accelerator" prom pt3 .
If th e system does not inter vene during theev ent
ahead, no thing will be displa yed. The system will

ECO Assist can function even more precisely if
th ero ute is adhered towhen route guidance is
active. The basic function is also available without
active route guidance. Not all information and
tra1c situations can be fore seen. The quality
depends on theav ailable map data.
ECO Assist is only an aid. The driver is responsible
fo rke eping a safe distance from theve hicle in
front, forve hicle speed and for braking in good
time. You must be ready tobrake at all times ir re-
specti veof whe ther the system is active.
The system may be impaired or may not function
in thefo llowing situations:
R If visibility is poor, e.g. due toinsu1cient illu-
mination of thero ad, highly variable shade
conditions, rain, sno w,fog or heavy spr ay.
R Ifth ere is glare, e.g. from oncoming tra1c,
direct sunlight or re0ections.
R Ifth ere is dirt on the windscreen in the area of
th e multifunction camera or the camera is

nomical driving style.
R When theElectric Intelligence route option is
switched on and route guidance is active, a

driver's ownre sponsibility tocomply with

The maximum limit speed set bythe /r stpoint
of resis tance is 140 km/h.
The limit speed set bythe /rst point of resis tance
will be sh own on the speedome ter. The segments
between the cur rently driven speed and the limit
speed will light up in green. For e1ciency rea-
sons, small deviations between the cur rently
driven speed and the limit speed are permitted.
If yo u depress the accelerator pedal be yond the
/r st point of resis tance, the limit speed will be
deactivated. The green segments on the speed-
ome ter will not be shown. When the accelerator
pedal is before the /r stpoint of resis tance again,
th e limit speed will be reactivated, thus making
sure that the maximum permissible speed is main-
ta ined again. If a
vehicle in front is de tected, the speed will be
re duced in order tofollow theve hicle in front at
an adjusted dis tance.
If th eve hicle de tects road and tra1c conditions
th at requ ire deceleration, theve hicle will no lon-
ge r be propelled and will coast. Tocause theve hi-
cle todecelerate, release the accelerator pedal.
How much theve hicle will decelerate automati-
cally when the accelerator pedal is released
depends on the set recuperation le vel
( / page 158). In hÃ, deceleration will be
automatic where there are vehicles in front, tra1c
signs, roundabouts and bends. In all other recu-
peration le vels, a permanently de/ned overrun
to rque will be set. If the situation calls for it, you
must also depress the brake pedal rega rdless of
th e selected recuperation le vel.
If yo u activate Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
or cruise control in drive prog ram Í, the limit
speed will be deactivated bythe /rst point of
re sis tance. If you deactivate the function again,
th e limit speed set bythe point of resis tance will
be switched on again. 162

The 0exible all-wheel distribution of the 4MATIC
means the drive is alw ays ideal lydist ributed
between bo thaxles. Depending on the situation,
only the front axle or only there ar axle can be
driven, or the drive can be distributed continu-
ously between bo thaxles.
This means that recuperation can be used even
more e.ectively and thera nge of theve hicle can
be increased (/ page 158).

and 4ETS, 4MATIC impr oves
th e traction of your vehicle whene ver a driven
wheel spins due toinsu1cient traction.
If yo ufa ilto adapt your driving style, 4MATIC can
neither reduce therisk of an accident nor override

result of its basic characteristics, the
storage capacity of, and the amount of energy
av ailable from, the high-voltage battery
decreases over the course of its life. As a
re sult, the maximum electrical range that can
be achie vedby theve hicle is reduced and its
maximum electrical output can be impaired.
The following factors could accelerate the age-
ing of the high-voltage batter y:
R frequently fully charging (char gelevel
100%) the high-voltage batter y,especially
when this process is not directly follo wed
by a jou rney
R frequent rapid charging with direct cur rent
(mode 4) R
leaving theve hicle idle for lengt hyperiods
at high ambient temp eratures #

when handling the high-voltage batter y. Re

R Every six months, when the outside temp era-
ture is abo ve10 °C, park theve hicle overnight
with a charge leve l below 20%.
R Only charge the high-voltage battery with
direct cur rent (mode 4) if necessar y.
R Char gethe high-voltage battery on average to
a ch arge leve l of 80%. Be yond a charge leve l of
80%, thech arging time is considerably pro-
lon ged.
R If leaving theve hicle idle for lengt hyperiods,
park up theve hicle with a high- voltage battery
ch arge leve l between 30% and 50%. Do not
ke ep the high-voltage battery continuously
