Beginner driver mode\bThis function is an on-demand feature
( page 27).Activate or deactivate the function.
If beginner driver mode is activated, an indica-
tor lamp in the driver\bs display lights up.\bAlternatively, beginner driver mode can be
activated or deactivated via the Mercedes me
connect app.Further information on Mercedes me connect ( page 333)\bBeginner driver mode is protected from deac-
tivation by third parties only in combination
with Mercedes me connect. If the vehicle is

proNle that activated the mode or the estab-
lished main user can deactivate it again.\bBeginner driver mode remains active even fol-
lowing a change of proNle or aser the vehicle
is switched on or oM, and must be deliberately
deactivated by the authorized user.
ATTENTION ASSIST
q Function of ATTENTION ASSIST
ATTENTION ASSIST assists you on long, monoto-
nous journeys, e.g. on highways and trunk roads.
If indicators of fatigue or increasing lapses in con- centration on the part of the driver are detected,
the system will suggest taking a break.
ATTENTION ASSIST is only an aid. It cannot
always detect fatigue or lapses in concentration in
time. The system is not a substitute for a well-res-
ted and attentive driver. On long journeys, take
regular breaks in good time that allow for ade-
quate recuperation.
You can choose between two settings:
= Standard: normal system sensitivity.
= Sensitive: higher system sensitivity. The driver
will be warned earlier and the attention level detected by ATTENTION ASSIST will be adap-
ted accordingly.
If fatigue or increasing inattention is detected, the
warning appears on the driver display: ATTEN-
TION ASSIST Take a Break! . you can acknowl-
edge the message and take a break if necessary. If you do not take a break and ATTENTION ASSIST
continues to detect increasing lapses in concen-
tration, you will be warned again aser a minimum
of 15 minutes.Driving and parking219

The following information will be displayed on the
driver\bs display:
= The length of the journey since the last break
= The attention level determined by ATTENTION
ASSIST:
- The more segments 1 of the circle dis-
played, the higher the detected attention level.
- Fewer segments 1 will be displayed in
the circle as the attention level decreases.
If ATTENTION ASSIST is unable to calculate the attention level and cannot issue a warning, the
System Suspended message will appear.
If the driver display shows a warning, a rest area
search will be oMered in the multimedia system.
You can select a rest area and start navigation to this rest area.
When you restart the vehicle, ATTENTION ASSIST will automatically be switched on. The last selec-
ted sensitivity level will remain stored.
System limits
ATTENTION ASSIST is active in the 37 mph
(60 km/h) to 124 mph (200 km/h) speed range.
Particularly in the following situations, ATTENTION ASSIST will function only in a restricted mannerand warnings may be delayed or not occur:
= If you have been driving for less than approx-
imately 30 minutes.
= If the road condition is poor (uneven road sur-
face or potholes).
= If there is a strong side wind.
= If you adopt a sporty driving style (high corner-
ing speeds or high rates of acceleration).
= If the Steering Assist function of Active Dis-
tance Assist DISTRONIC is active.
= If the clock is set to the incorrect time.=If you change lanes and vary your speed fre-
quently in active driving situations.
Also observe any information regarding display
messages that can be displayed on the driver\bs
display.
The ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness or alertness
assessment will be reset and restarted when you continue the journey in the following situations:
= If you switch oM the vehicle.
= If you unfasten your seat belt and open the
driver\bs door (e.g. to change drivers or take a break).

Speed control cruise control
qFunction of cruise control
Cruise control regulates the speed to the value
selected by the driver.
If you accelerate to overtake, forexample, the
stored speed is not deleted. If you remove your foot from the accelerator pedal aser overtaking,
cruise control will resume speed regulation back to the stored speed.
You can store any speed above 15 mph
(20 km/h) up to the maximum design speed, or up to the speed recommended by Range Assis-
tant.
Observe the notes on driving systems and your responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognizedangers ( page 211).

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
q Function of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist maintains the
set speed on free-Oowing roads. If vehicles are
detected ahead, the set distance will be main- tained until the vehicle comes to a standstill if
necessary. The vehicle will accelerate or brake
depending on the distance to the vehicle in front
and the set speed. The speed and distance to thevehicle in front are set and saved using the steer-ing wheel.
Available speed range: = Vehicles without Driving Assistance Package:
15 mph (20 km/h) - 100 mph (160 km/h)
= Vehicles with Driving Assistance Package:
15 mph (20 km/h) - 130 mph (210 km/h)
\bThe adjustable set speed may diMer if a limit
speed (e.g. winter tire limit) is stored.\bIf Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is active
and the range monitor recommends a lower driving speed, this will automatically be adop-
ted as the new set speed. If necessary, the setting speed can be increased again man-ually.
Other features of Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC:
= Adjusts the driving style depending on the
selected drive program (energy-saving, com- fortable or dynamic) ( page 184)
= Initiates acceleration to the stored speed if the
turn signal indicator is switched on to change
to the overtaking lane
= Vehicles with Driving Assistance Package:
- Reacts to stationary vehicles detected in
urban speed ranges (except bicycles and
motorcycles)
- Takes one-sided overtaking restrictions
into account on highways or on multi-lane
divided highways (country-dependent)
\bOn the DYNAMIC SELECT menu, it is possible
to set the driving mode of Active DistanceAssist DISTRONIC. Depending on which drive
program is selected, the driving characteris- tics can be geared towards energy economy, comfort or dynamic performance. On the
Active Distance Assist menu, the driving style can be permanently set to Comfort or
Dynamic ( page 229).
Vehicles with Active Parking Assist and Driving
Assistance Package: if Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC has braked the vehicle to a standstill,
the vehicle can automatically follow the vehicle in
front if it drives oM again within 30 seconds. If a
critical situation is detected in the surrounding
area when the vehicle drives oM, such as a person
in the vehicle path, a visual and acoustic warning
will be issued indicating that the driver must now take control of the vehicle. The vehicle will not be
accelerated any further.
Observe the notes on driving systems and your responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognizedangers ( page 211).

&WARNING Risk of accident from accelera-
tion or braking by Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC may accel-
erate or brake in the following cases, for
example:
= If the vehicle pulls away using Active Dis-
tance Assist DISTRONIC.
= If the stored speed is called up and is con-
siderably faster or slower than the cur-
rently driven speed.
= If Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC no
longer detects a vehicle in front or does
not react to relevant objects.
Always carefully observe the traPc con-
ditions and be ready to brake at all
times.Take into account the traPc situation
before calling up the stored speed.&WARNING Risk of accident due to insuP-
cient deceleration by Active Distance
Assist DISTRONIC
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC brakes your vehicle with up to 50% of the possible deceler-
ation. If this deceleration is not suPcient,
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC alerts you with a visual and acoustic warning.
Adjust your speed and maintain a suita-
ble distance from the vehicle in front.Brake the vehicle yourself and/or take
evasive action.&WARNING Risk of accident if detection
function of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is impaired
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC does not
react or has a limited reaction:
= when driving on a diMerent lane or when
changing lanes
= to pedestrians, animals, bicycles or sta-
tionary vehicles, or unexpected obstacles
= to complex traPc conditions
= to oncoming vehicles and crossing traPc
As a result, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC may neither give warnings nor intervene in
such situations.Always observe the traPc conditions
carefully and react accordingly.

If Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC has been put
into passive mode by pressing the accelerator pedal, only speed limits which are higher than theset speed are adopted.
The maximum permissible speed does not take
the road condition and current weather and traPc
conditions into account. Adjust your speed accordingly, when necessary.
Observe the notes on driving systems and yourresponsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognizedangers ( page 211).
System limits
The system limits of TraPc Sign Assist apply to
the detection of traPc signs ( page 241).
Speed limits below 12 mph (20 km/h) are not automatically adopted by the system as the stored speed. Temporary speed restrictions (e.g. for a
certain time or due to weather conditions) cannot
be properly detected by the system. The maxi- mum permissible speed applying to a vehicle witha trailer is not detected by the system.
Adjust the speed in these situations.&WARNING Risk of accident due to Active
Speed Limit Assist adapting the vehicle\bs speed
The speed adopted by Active Speed Limit
Assist may be too high or incorrect in some
individual cases, such as:
= at speed limits below 12 mph (20 km/h)
= in wet conditions or in fog
= when towing a trailer
Ensure that the driven speed complies
with traPc regulations.Adjust the driving speed to suit current
traPc and weather conditions.
qFunction of route-based speed adaptation
When Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is activa-
ted, the vehicle speed will be adapted according
to the route events ahead. Depending on the drive program selected, the vehicle will negotiate aroute event ahead in an energy-saving, comforta-
ble or dynamic manner. When the route event has
been passed, the vehicle will accelerate again to the stored speed. The set distance to the vehicle
in front, vehicles detected ahead and speed
restrictions ahead will be taken into account.
Route-based speed adaptation can be activated inthe multimedia system ( page 229).
The following route events are taken into account: = Bends
= TraPc circles
= T-intersections
= Turns and exits
= TraPc jams ahead (only with Live TraPc )
Also, the speed is reduced if the turn signal indi- cator is switched on and one of the following sit-
uations is detected:
= Turning at intersections
= Driving on slowing-down lanes
= Driving on lanes adjacent to slowing-down
lanes
The driver is responsible for choosing the right
speed and observing other road users. This applies in particular to intersections, traPc circles228Driving and parking
