Canceling a brake application of Active Brake
Assist
You can cancel a brake application of Active
Brake Assist at any time by:
= Fully depressing the accelerator pedal or with
kickdown.
= Releasing the brake pedal.
Active Brake Assist may cancel the brake applica-
tion when one of the following conditions is fulNl-
led:
= You maneuver to avoid the obstacle.Driving and parking239

=There is no longer a risk of collision.
= An obstacle is no longer detected in front of
your vehicle.
Reaction to oncoming road users (only vehicles
with Driving Assistance Package)
Active Brake Assist can also react to detected
oncoming road users:
= Reaction up to speeds of approximately
62 mph (100 km/h)
= Warning for oncoming road users through
acoustic warning and warning lamp
= Autonomous braking application in order to
reduce the severity of an accident
Evasive Steering Assist&WARNING Risk of accident despite Eva-
sive Steering Assist
Evasive Steering Assist cannot always recog-
nize objects or complex traPc situations
clearly.
Moreover, the steering support provided by
Evasive Steering Assist is not suPcient to
avoid a collision.Always pay careful attention to the traPc
situation; do not rely on Evasive Steering
Assist alone.Be prepared to brake or swerve if neces-
sary.End the support by actively steering in non-critical situations.Drive at an appropriate speed if there
are pedestrians close to the path of your
vehicle.
Evasive Steering Assist has the following charac-
teristics:
= Detection of pedestrians, cyclists and vehi-
cles.
= Assistance through power-assisted steering if
it detects a swerving maneuver.
= Activation by an abrupt steering movement
during a swerving maneuver.
= Assistance during swerving and straightening
of the vehicle.
= Reaction from a speed of approximately
12 mph (20 km/h) up to a speed of approx-
imately 68 mph (110 km/h).
The steering support of Evasive Steering Assist
can be canceled at any time by counter steering.

limits have priority over traPc signs and speed
limits shown on the driver\bs display.
Also observe the following information:
= select a speed adapted to the traPc, sur-
roundings and weather conditions
= observe actual traPc signs
= observe applicable traPc rules and regula-
tions
Observe the notes on driving systems and your responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognize dangers ( page 211).Displays on the driver\bs display1Permissible speed2Permissible speed when there is a restriction3Additional sign with restriction
The system can show up to two traPc signs on
the driver\bs display simultaneously. The system
always prioritizes displaying speed limits. Only
one traPc sign with a maximum permissible
speed can be shown on the head-up display. If
two speed signs are shown on the driver\bs display, e.g. when restrictions are detected, the value ofles-hand speed limit 1 is always transmitted to
the cruise control or Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC for adoption and is shown on the head-up display.
Examples of traPc signs that can be displayed
TraPc Sign Assist can detect and display the fol-
lowing traPc signs 1:
= speed limits
= end of the speed limit
= overtaking restrictions
= play streets
= recommended speeds
242Driving and parking

TraPc Sign Assist can detect the following addi-
tional signs 3 and, if necessary, analyze the rele-
vance of the restrictions using other vehicle sen- sors:
= wet conditions
= slippery road surfaces
= fog
= temporary restrictions
= exits
= restrictions for car/trailer combinations
TraPc Sign Assist also uses data from the digital
street map in the navigation system. When you
leave or enter a municipality or change roads, e.g.
on a freeway exit or slip road, or aser you turn at
an intersection, the display on the driver\bs display can thus be updated without a traPc sign having
been detected.
Depending on vehicle equipment and the country
you are in, the system can also display speed
restrictions ahead on the driver\bs display and on the head-up display. The driver\bs display can alsoshow the distance to an upcoming lower limit
speed. For this purpose, information from the digi-tal road map of the navigation system is used. The
Assistance menu can also display a dynamic visu-
alization of the speed limits ahead.
If TraPc Sign Assist cannot determine the cur-
rently applicable maximum permissible speed
(e.g. due to a lack of signs), the following display appears on the driver\bs display:
TraPc Sign Assist is not available in all countries.
If the vehicle is in a country where TraPc Sign
Assist is not supported, this is displayed continu-
ously.
\bAlso observe the information on display mes- sages in TraPc Sign Assist ( page 409).
Warning when the maximum permissible speed is
exceeded
The system can warn you if you unintentionally exceed the maximum permissible speed. To do
this, you can specify in the multimedia system by how much the maximum permissible speed can
be exceeded before a warning is issued. You can
set the warning to visual only (the traPc sign
Oashes three times on the driver\bs display) or vis-
ual and acoustic, including a warning tone.
Additional functions of TraPc Sign Assist (coun-
try-speciNc)
Warning for no-entry signs: TraPc Sign Assist can
warn you if you drive the wrong way down a sec-
tion of road, e.g. on freeway slip roads or one-way
streets.
Warning at pedestrian crossings: if you approach
pedestrian crossings and pedestrians are in the
danger zone or are moving towards it, TraPc Sign
Assist can warn you up to a speed of approx-
imately 44 mph (70 km/h).
Warning at stop signs: TraPc Sign Assist can warn
you up to a speed of approximately 44 mph
(70 km/h) if you are about to drive through a stop sign unintentionally. For this to be possible, thesigns must be clear, e.g. if the system detects
more than one stop sign or can conNrm a stop
sign using the digital navigation map. No warning
can be issued if several diMerent signs are detec-
ted.Driving and parking243

Warning at red lights: TraPc Sign Assist can warn
you up to a speed of approximately 44 mph
(70 km/h) if you are about to drive through a red
light unintentionally.
The following conditions must be fulNlled:
= Several traPc lights have been detected.
= All traPc lights detected are red.
= At least one of the red traPc lights detected is
on the front passenger side beside the vehi-
cle\bs own lane.
= The traPc lights are in the following sequence
(from top to bottom): red, yellow, green.\bIf the function is available, you can activate or deactivate the warnings at pedestrian cross- ings, stop signs and red lights in the TraPc
Sign Assist menu under Further Warnings
( page 244).
System limits
The system may be impaired or may not function
in the following situations in particular:
= If visibility is poor, e.g. due to insuPcient illu-
mination of the road, highly variable shade
conditions, rain, snow, fog, swirling dust or
heavy spray.
= If there is glare, e.g. from oncoming traPc,
direct sunlight or reOections.
= If there is dirt on the windshield in the vicinity
of the multifunction camera or if the camera is fogged up, damaged or obscured.
= If traPc signs are diPcult to detect, e.g.
because they are dirty, covered, faded, cov-
ered with ice, damaged, badly positioned,
poorly lit or twisted.
= Active traPc signs with LED displays may not
be detected correctly or at all due to technical
factors, such as transmission frequency.
= If the information on the navigation system\bs
digital map is incorrect, incomplete or out of
date.
= If signage or the road layout is ambiguous, e.g.
traPc signs in roadworks, at exits and ramps,
in neighboring lanes or parallel roads.
= If signs do not conform to the standard.
= If signs or road layouts are speciNc to the
country and deviate from the route guidancein the navigation system, e.g. at or beyond construction sites.
= Aser sharp turns and on tight bends, when
you pass traPc signs that are outside the
camera\bs Neld of vision.
= If you overtake vehicles with traPc signs that
are aPxed or attached to them.

on the following functions:
= A turn signal is set= A lane is recommended during active
route guidance
If neither function is active, the remaining time until the next green phase for the lane
straight ahead is displayed.\bUse of the traPc light information service
requires the regular transmission of vehicle
positions and driving directions to Mercedes-
Benz. The data is immediately anonymized by Mercedes-Benz and forwarded to the providerof the traPc light information service. The
vehicle positions and driving directions are
deleted aser a very short time (a few sec-
onds) and are not permanently saved.
If you do not want to transmit the vehicle
positions and driving directions, you have the following options:
= You deactivate the service in the
Mercedes me portal.
= You have the service deactivated at an
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.\bThis traPc light information service is only
available in certain cities and regions. The function is supported under the following con-
ditions:
= The vehicle is equipped with a multimedia sys-
tem featuring navigation and a communication
module with an activated, integrated SIM card.
= You have a user account for the Mercedes me
Portal.
= The vehicle has been connected with the user
account.
= The navigation services option is available,
subscribed to and activated in the Mercedes me Portal.
= The traPc light information service is within
the scope of the navigation service.
The current vehicle position and the direction of travel are transmitted via the communicationmodule and aligned with the data from the traPc
light information service provider. The provider gathers data from traPc lights which transmit
their changing phases. When the vehicle approaches an inter-section with networked traPc
lights, data is transmitted to the vehicle.246Driving and parking
