No steering support is provided from STEER
CONTROL, if:
RESP®is malfunctioning.
Rthe lighting is faulty.
Power steering will, however, continue to
function.
Theft deterrent locking system
Immobilizer
XTo activate with the SmartKey:remove
the SmartKey from the ignition lock.
XTo activate with KEYLESS-GO:switch the
ignition off and open the driver's door.
XTo deactivate:switch on the ignition.
The immobilizer prevents your vehicle from
being started without the correct SmartKey.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.
Anyone can start the engine if a valid
SmartKey has been left inside the vehicle.
iThe immobilizer is always deactivated
when you start the engine.
In the event that the engine cannot be
started when the starter battery is fully
charged, the immobilizer may be faulty.
Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz
Center or call 1-800-FOR-MERCedes (in the
USA) or 1-800-387-0100 (in Canada).
ATA (anti-theft alarm system)
XTo arm:lock the vehicle with the SmartKey
or KEYLESS-GO.
Indicator lampCflashes. The alarm
system is armed after approximately
15 seconds.
XTo deactivate using the SmartKey:
unlock the vehicle with the SmartKey.
or
XInsert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
XTo deactivate using KEYLESS-GO:unlock
the vehicle with KEYLESS-GO.
or
XPress the Start/Stop button on the
dashboard. The SmartKey must be inside
the vehicle.
A visual and audible alarm is triggered if the
alarm system is armed and you open:
Ra door
Rthe vehicle with the mechanical key
Rthe tailgate
Rthe hood
XTo turn the alarm off with the
SmartKey:press the6or7button
on the SmartKey.
The alarm is switched off.
or
XInsert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.

SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of

GWARNING
If persons, particularly children are subjected
to prolonged exposure to extreme heat or
cold, there is a risk of injury, possibly even
fatal. Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.
GWARNING
If you attach heavy or large objects to the
SmartKey, the SmartKey could be
unintentionally turned in the ignition lock. This
could cause the engine to be switched off.
There is a risk of an accident.
Do not attach any heavy or large objects to
the SmartKey. Remove any bulky key rings
before inserting the SmartKey into the
ignition lock.
!Keep the SmartKey away from strong
magnetic fields. Otherwise, the remote
control function could be affected.
Strong magnetic fields can occur in the
vicinity of powerful electrical installations.
Do not keep the SmartKey:
Rwith electronic devices, e.g. a mobile
phone or another SmartKey
Rwith metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal
foil
Rinside metallic objects, e.g. a metal case
This can affect the functionality of the
SmartKey.
Do not keep the KEYLESS-GO key in the
temperature-controlled cup holder.
Otherwise, the KEYLESS-GO key will not be
recognized.

The SmartKey now functions as follows:
XTo unlock the driver's door:press the
6button once.
XTo unlock centrally:press the6
button twice.
XTo lock centrally:press the7button.
The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as
follows:
XTo unlock the driver's door:touch the
inner surface of the door handle on the
driver's door.
XTo unlock centrally:touch the inner
surface of the door handle on the front-
passenger door or the rear door.
XTo lock centrally:touch the outer sensor
surface on one of the door handles
(Ypage 81).
XTo restore the factory settings:press
and hold down the6and7buttons
simultaneously for approximately six
seconds until the battery check lamp
flashes twice (Ypage 83).
Mechanical key
General notes
If the vehicle can no longer be locked or
unlocked with the SmartKey, use the
mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm
system will be triggered (Ypage 77).
There are several ways to turn off the alarm:
XTo deactivate the alarm with the
SmartKey:press the6or7button
on the SmartKey.
or
XInsert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
or
XTo deactivate the alarm with KEYLESS-
GO:press the Start/Stop button in the
ignition lock. The SmartKey must be in the
vehicle.
or
XLock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey must be outside the
vehicle.
If you unlock the vehicle using the mechanical
key, the fuel filler flap will not be unlocked
automatically.
XTo unlock the fuel filler flap:insert the
SmartKey into the ignition lock.
Removing the mechanical key
XPush release catchCin the direction of
the arrow and at the same time remove
mechanical keyDfrom the SmartKey.

a sudden change in direction.
Always store objects so that they cannot be
flung around. Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tipping before the
journey.
You should preferably place luggage or loads
in the cargo compartment. Observe the
loading guidelines (Ypage 340).

Automatic locking feature
XTo disarm:press and hold buttonCfor
about five seconds until a tone sounds.
XTo arm:press and hold buttonDfor about
five seconds until a tone sounds.
iIf you press one of the two buttons and
do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected.
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the wheels are
turning.
You could therefore be locked out if:
Rthe vehicle is being pushed.
Rthe vehicle is being towed.
Rthe vehicle is on a roller dynamometer.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board
computer (Ypage 284).
Power closing
Power closing pulls the doors and trunk lid
into their locks automatically even if they are
only partly closed.
XTo power close a door:push the door into
the lock up to the first detent position.
Power closing will pull the door fully closed.
XTo power close the tailgate:lightly press
the tailgate downwards.
Power closing will pull the tailgate fully
closed.
Unlocking the driver's door
(mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm
system will be triggered (Ypage 77).
XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Ypage 82).
XInsert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go.
XTurn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
to positionG.
The door is unlocked.
XTurn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
Locking the vehicle (mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
XOpen the driver's door.
XClose the front-passenger door, the rear
doors and the tailgate.
XPress the locking button (Ypage 87).
XCheck whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rear doors
are still visible. Press down the locking
knobs by hand, if necessary.
XClose the driver's door.

Rpress the closing or locking button on the
tailgate.
Rpull the handle on the tailgate.
GWARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. If the tailgate
is open when the engine is running,
particularly if the vehicle is moving, exhaust
fumes could enter the passenger
compartment. There is a risk of poisoning.
Turn off the engine before opening the
tailgate. Never drive with the tailgate open.
!The tailgate swings upwards and to the
rear when opened. Therefore, make sure
that there is sufficient clearance above and
behind the tailgate.

Opening the tailgate automatically
You can open the tailgate automatically with
the SmartKey or the handle in the tailgate.
XPress and hold theTbutton on the
SmartKey until the tailgate opens.
or
XIf the tailgate is unlocked, pull the handle
and let it go again immediately.
Closing the tailgate automatically
GWARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped
during automatic closing of the tailgate.
Moreover, people, e.g. children, may be
standing in the closing area or may enter the
closing area during the closing process. There
is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the
closing area during the closing process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
Rpress theTbutton on the SmartKey.
Rpress the remote operating switch on the
driver's door.
Rpress the closing or locking button on the
tailgate.
Rpull the handle on the tailgate.
Closing and locking button (example: vehicle withKEYLESS-GO)
XTo close:press closing buttonCon the
tailgate.
or
XPress and hold theTbutton on the
SmartKey until the tailgate closes.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: you can
simultaneously close and lock the tailgate.
XPress locking buttonDon the tailgate.
If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected outside
the vehicle, the tailgate closes and locks.
All the doors must be shut and the
SmartKey located in the vicinity of the
tailgate.
iThe tailgate cannot be opened and closed
with the SmartKey if there is a SmartKey in
the ignition.
If the tailgate touches an object while
closing, the closing procedure is
interrupted and the tailgate reopens.
iIf a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
cargo compartment, the tailgate will not
lock.

Opening/closing automatically from
inside
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped
during automatic closing of the tailgate.
Moreover, people, e.g. children, may be
standing in the closing area or may enter the
closing area during the closing process. There
is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the
closing area during the closing process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
Rpress theTbutton on the SmartKey.
Rpress the remote operating switch on the
driver's door.
Rpress the closing or locking button on the
tailgate.
Rpull the handle on the tailgate.
GWARNING

and unlocked.

Limiting the opening angle of the
tailgate
Important safety notes
!Make sure there is sufficient clearance to
open the tailgate fully when setting the
opening angle. The tailgate could otherwise
be damaged. Ideally, set the opening angle
outside.
Activating
You can limit the opening angle of the
tailgate. This is possible in the top half of its
opening range, up to approximately 4 in
(10 cm) before the stop.
This could be useful, for example, if there is
insufficient space above the tailgate.
XTo open the tailgate:pull the handle on
the tailgate.
XTo stop the opening procedure at the
desired position:press the closing button

XMake sure that the SmartKey is in position
1or2in the ignition lock.
XTo open fully:press switchCand release.

Both hinged side windows open fully.
iIf the hinged side windows are blocked
when closing, the closing procedure is
interrupted and the hinged side windows
open again fully.
Convenience opening
General notes
You can ventilate the vehicle before you start
driving. To do this, the SmartKey is used to
carry out the following functions
simultaneously:
Runlock the vehicle
Ropen the side windows
Ropen the hinged side windows
Ropen the sliding sunroof or the panorama
roof with power tilt/sliding panel and the
roller sunblinds
Rswitch on the seat ventilation for the
driver's seat
iThe convenience opening feature can
only be operated using the SmartKey. The
SmartKey must be close to the vehicle. For
vehicles without KEYLESS-GO, the
SmartKey must be near the driver's door
handle.
Convenience opening
XVehicles without KEYLESS-GO:point the
tip of the SmartKey at the door handle on
the driver's door.
XPress and hold the6button until the
side windows and the sliding sunroof or the
panorama roof with power tilt/sliding
panel are in the desired position.
If the roller sunblinds of the panorama roof
with power tilt/sliding panel are closed, the
roller sunblinds are opened first.
XPress and hold the6button again until
the panorama roof with power tilt/sliding
panel is in the desired position.
XTo interrupt convenience opening:
release the6button.
Convenience closing feature
Important safety notes
GWARNING
When the convenience closing feature is
operating, parts of the body could become
trapped in the closing area of the side window
and the sliding sunroof. There is a risk of
injury.
Observe the complete closing procedure
when the convenience closing feature is
operating. Make sure that no body parts are
in close proximity during the closing
procedure.
When you lock the vehicle, you can
simultaneously:
Rclose the side windows
Rclose the hinged side windows
Rclose the sliding sunroof or the panorama
roof with power tilt/sliding panel
On vehicles with a panorama roof with power
tilt/sliding panel, you can then close the
roller sunblinds.

Proceed as follows if someone is trapped:
RRelease the7button to interrupt the
closing procedure.
RPress and hold the6button to open.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO:
RRelease the sensor surfaces on the exterior
door handle to interrupt the closing
procedure.
RTo open, pull the same door handle
immediately and hold it firmly. The door
windows and the sliding sunroof will open
for as long as the door handle is held but
the door is not opened.
iNotes on the automatic reversing feature

Rthe side window (Ypage 94)
Rthe sliding sunroof (Ypage 99)
Using the SmartKey
The SmartKey must be in the vicinity of the
vehicle, on vehicles without KEYLESS-GO the
SmartKey must be near the door handle.
XVehicles without KEYLESS-GO:point the
tip of the SmartKey at the door handle on
the driver's door.
XPress and hold the7button until the
side windows and the sliding sunroof or the
panorama roof with power tilt/sliding
panel are fully closed.
XMake sure that all the side windows and the
sliding sunroof or panorama roof with
power tilt/sliding panel are closed.
On vehicles with a panorama roof with power
tilt/sliding panel:
XPress and hold the7button again until
the roller sunblinds of the panorama roof
with power tilt/sliding panel close.
XTo interrupt convenience closing:
release the7button.
Using KEYLESS-GO
The KEYLESS-GO key must be outside the
vehicle. All the doors must be closed.
XTouch recessed sensor surfaceCon the
door handle until the side windows and the
sliding sunroof or the panorama roof with
power tilt/sliding panel are fully closed.
iMake sure you only touch recessed
sensor surfaceC.
XMake sure that all the side windows and the
sliding sunroof or panorama roof with
power tilt/sliding panel are closed.
On vehicles with a panorama roof with power
tilt/sliding panel:
XTouch recessed sensor surfaceCon the
door handle again until the roller sunblinds
of the panorama roof with power tilt/
sliding panel close.
XTo interrupt convenience closing:
release recessed sensor surfaceCon the
door handle.
Resetting the side windows
If a side window can no longer be closed fully,
you must reset it.
XClose all the doors.
XTurn the SmartKey to position1or2in the
ignition lock.

Resetting
!If the sliding sunroof still cannot be
opened or closed fully after resetting,
contact a qualified specialist workshop.
Reset the sliding sunroof if it does not move
smoothly.
XTurn the SmartKey to position1or2in the
ignition lock.
XRaise the sliding sunroof fully at the rear
(Ypage 99).
XKeep theVswitch pressed for another
second.
XMake sure that the sliding sunroof can be
fully opened and closed again (Ypage 99).
XIf this is not the case, repeat the steps
above again.
