Start-oM
assist Function of the s
tart-oM assist
The start-oM assist enables optimal vehicle accel-
eration from a standstill. For this, a suitably high-
grip road surface is required, the tyres and vehicle
must also be in good condition.
Do not activate the start-oM assist on public
roads.
Be sure to observe the safety notes and informa-
tion on ESP n
( page 233).

wheels could spin and you could lose control
of the vehicle.
If ESP n
is deactivated, there is a risk of skid-
ding and accident!

. ATTENTION ASSIST
Function of ATTENTION ASSIST
A

TTENTION ASSIST assists you on long, monoto-
nous journeys, e.g. on motorways and trunk
roads. If ATTENTION ASSIST detects indicators of
fatigue or increasing lapses in concentration on
the part of the driver, it suggests taking a break.
ATTENTION ASSIST is only an aid. It cannot
always detect fatigue or lapses in concentration in
time. The system is not a substitute for a well-res-
ted and attentive driver. On long journeys, take
regular breaks in good time that allow for ade-
quate recuperation.
You can choose between two settings:
= Standard: normal system sensitivity.
= Sensitive: higher system sensitivity. The driver
is warned earlier and the attention level detec-
ted by ATTENTION ASSIST is adapted accord-
ingly.
If drowsiness or increasing lapses in concentra-
tion are detected, the ATTENTION ASSIST Take
a break! warning appears in the Instrument Dis-
play. You can acknowledge the message and take 238
Driving and parking

a break where necessary. If you do not take a
br eak and ATTENTION ASSIST continues to detect
increasing lapses in concentration, you will be
warned again aser a minimum of 15 minutes. You can have the following status information for
A

TTENTION ASSIST displayed in the assistance
menu of the on-board computer:
= The length of the journey since the last break.
= The attention level determined by ATTENTION
ASSIST:
- the fuller the circle, the higher the atten-
tion level determined -
as y
our attention wanes, the circle in the
centre of the display becomes smaller
If ATTENTION ASSIST is unable to calculate the
attention level and cannot issue a warning, the
System suspended message appears.
If a warning is given in the Instrument Display, the
multimedia system oMers to search for a rest
area. You can select a rest area and start naviga-
tion to this rest area. This function can be activa-
ted and deactivated in the multimedia system.
If ATTENTION ASSIST is deactivated, the Û
symbol appears in the assistance graphic in the
Instrument Display. Aser the vehicle is started,
ATTENTION ASSIST is automatically activated. The
last selected sensitivity level remains stored.
System limits
ATTENTION ASSIST is active in the 60 km/h to
200 km/h speed range.
Particularly in the following situations, ATTENTION
ASSIST only functions in a restricted manner and
warnings may be delayed or not occur:
= If you have been driving for less than approx-
imately 30 minutes. =
If t he road condition is poor (uneven road sur-
face or potholes).
= If there is a strong side wind.
= If you adopt a sporty driving style (high corner-
ing speeds or high rates of acceleration).
= If Active Steering Assist is activated and active
( page 251).
= If the time has been set incorrectly.
= If you change lanes and vary your speed fre-
quently in active driving situations.
The ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness or alertness
assessment is reset and restarted when continu-
ing the journey in the following situations:
= If you switch oM the vehicle.
= If you unfasten your seat belt and open the
driver's door (e.g. to change drivers or take a
break). Driving and parking

Function of cruise control
Cr

uise control regulates the speed to the value
selected by the driver.
If you accelerate to overtake, forexample, the
stored speed is not deleted. If you remove your foot from the accelerator pedal

vertaking,
cruise control will resume speed regulation back
to the stored speed.
You can store any speed above 20 km/h up to the
maximum design speed or up to the set winter
tyre limit.
Observe the notes on driving systems and your
responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognise
dangers ( page 230).

You can limit the speed as follows:
= V
ariable: for a short-term speed restriction,
e.g. in built-up areas
= Permanent: for a longer-term speed restric-
tion, e.g. in winter tyre mode
You can store any speed above 20 km/h up to the
maximum design speed or up to the set winter
tyre limit. You can also perform settings while the
vehicle is stationary if the vehicle has been star-
ted.

Information on the permanent limiter
If t
he vehicle should never exceed a speciNc
speed (e.g. for driving in winter tyre mode), you
can set this speed with the permanent limiter.
You do this by limiting the speed between
160 km/h and 240 km/h in the multimedia sys-
tem ( page 243).
Shortly before the set speed is reached, it
appears in the Instrument Display. When you con-
Nrm the message, display messages no longer
appear until you switch oM the vehicle. The speed
will only be displayed again once the vehicle has
been restarted or if the set speed is changed.
The permanent limiter does not switch to passive
mode even during kickdown and the driven speed
remains below the set speed. Setting the limit speed for winter tyres

Function of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
DIS
TRONIC Active Distance Assist maintains the
set speed when driving freely. If vehicles are
detected ahead, the set distance is maintained, if
necessary until the vehicle comes to a standstill.
The vehicle accelerates or brakes depending on
the distance to the vehicle in front and the set
speed. The speed and distance to the vehicle in
front are set and saved using the steering wheel.
Available speed range: = Vehicles without Driving Assistance Package:
20 km/h - 200 km/h

selected drive program (fuel-saving, comforta-
ble or dynamic)
= Initiates acceleration to the stored speed if the
turn signal indicator is switched on to change
to the overtaking lane
= Vehicles with Driving Assistance Package:
- Reacts to stationary vehicles detected in
urban speed ranges (except bicycles and
motorcycles)
- Takes one-sided overtaking restrictions
into account on motorways or on multi-
lane roads with separate carriageways
(country-dependent)
Vehicles with Driving Assistance Package and
Parking Package: if the vehicle has been braked to
a standstill on multi-lane, separate carriageways
by Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, it can auto-
matically follow the vehicle in front when driving

If a c

hange in the speed limit of 20 km/h or more
is detected and automatic adoption of speed lim-
its is activated, the new speed limit is automati-
cally adopted as the stored speed ( page 261).
The driven speed is adjusted when the vehicle is
level with the traPc sign at the latest. In the case
of signs indicating entry into an urban area, the
speed is adapted according to the speed permit-
ted within the urban area. The speed limit display
in the Instrument Display is always updated when
the vehicle is level with the traPc sign.
If there is no speed restriction on an unlimited
stretch of road (e.g. on a motorway), the recom-
mended speed is automatically adopted as the
stored speed. The system uses the speed stored
on an unlimited stretch of road as the recommen-
ded speed. If you do not alter the stored speed on
an unlimited stretch of road, the recommended
speed is 130 km/h.
If Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC has been put
into passive mode by pressing the accelerator
pedal, only speed limits which are higher than the
set speed are adopted. Driving and parking
