Parking the vehicle

caused by an insuPciently secured vehi-
cle rolling away
If the vehicle is not securely parked suP-
ciently, it can roll away in an uncontrolled way
even at a slight downhill gradient.
On uphill or downhill gradients, turn the
front wheels so that the vehicle rolls
towards the curb if it starts moving.Apply the parking brake.Switch the transmission to position ].&WARNING Risk of Nre caused by hot
exhaust system parts
Flammable materials such as leaves, grass or
twigs may ignite.
Park the vehicle so that no Oammable
material can come into contact with hot
vehicle components.In particular, do not park on dry grass- land or harvested grain Nelds.&WARNING Risk of accident and injury due
to children les unattended in the vehicle
If you leave children unattended in the vehicle,
they could, in particular:
= open doors, thereby endangering other
persons or road users.

gases such as carbon monoxide. Inhaling
these exhaust gases is hazardous to health
and leads to poisoning.

auxiliary heating running in an enclosed
space without suPcient ventilation.&WARNING Risk of injury by becoming
trapped when opening and closing a garage door
When you operate or program a garage door
with an integrated garage door opener, per- sons can become trapped or struck by the
garage door if they stand within its range of movement.
Always make sure that nobody is withinthe range of the garage door\bs move-
ment.Only operate the following doors using the garage
door opener:
= Doors with a safety stop and reversing func-
tion
= Doors which conform to the current U.S.
safety standardsBefore programming the garage door opener, park
the vehicle outside the garage. Make sure that the
vehicle is switched on but not started.
Requirements
= The vehicle has been parked outside the
garage or outside the range of movement of
the door.
= The vehicle is switched on.
= The vehicle has not been started.\bThe garage door opener function is always
available when the vehicle is switched on.Check if the transmitter frequency of the
remote control has the frequency range of
280 to 868 MHz.

Press and hold button 1, 2 or 3 that you
wish to program.
Indicator lamp 4 Oashes yellow.\bIt can take up to 20 seconds before the indi-
cator lamp Oashes yellow.Release the previously pressed button.
Indicator lamp 4 continues to Oash yellow.Point remote control 5 from a distance of
0.4 in (1 cm) to 3 in (8 cm) towards button
1 , 2 or 3.Press and hold button 6 of remote control
5 until one of the following signals appears:
= Indicator lamp 4 lights up green continu-
ously. Programming is complete.
= Indicator lamp 4 Oashes green. Program-
ming was successful. Additionally, syn-
chronization of the rolling code with the
door system must be carried out.If indicator lamp 4 does not light up or Oash
green: repeat the procedure.Release all of the buttons.\bThe remote control for the door drive is not
included in the scope of delivery of the garage
door opener.

q Synchronizing the rolling code
Requirements
= The door system uses a rolling code.
= The vehicle must be within range of the garage
or door drive.
= The vehicle as well as persons and objects are
located outside the range of movement of the door.
Press the programming button on the door
drive unit.
Initiate the next step within approximately
30 seconds.Press previously programmed button 1, 2
or 3 repeatedly until the door closes.
When the door closes, programming is com-
pleted.\bPlease also read the operating instructions for
the door drive.
q Troubleshooting when programming the remote
controlCheck if the transmitter frequency of remote
control 5 is supported.Replace the batteries in remote control 5.Hold remote control 5 at various angles from
a distance of 0.4 in (1 cm) to 3 in (8 cm) in
front of the inside rearview mirror. You should
test every position for at least 25 seconds
before trying another position.Hold remote control 5 at the same angles at
various distances in front of the inside rear-
view mirror. You should test every position for
at least 25 seconds before trying another
position.On remote controls that transmit only for a
limited period, press button 6 on remote
control 5 again before transmission ends.Angle the antenna line of the garage door

the door opens or closes.
q Clearing the garage door opener memoryPress and hold buttons 1 and 3.

The entire memory has been deleted.

In the following situations, the electric parking
brake is also applied: = The HOLD function is keeping the vehicle sta-
tionary.
= Active Parking Assist is keeping the vehicle
stationary.
= Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is bringing
the vehicle to a standstill.
= In addition, one of the following conditions
must be fulNlled:
- The vehicle is switched oM.
- The seat belt tongue is not inserted in the
seat belt buckle of the driver\bs seat and
the driver\bs door is opened.
- There is a system malfunction.
- The power supply is insuPcient.
- The vehicle is stationary for a lengthy
period.
When the electric parking brake is applied, the

Vehicles with automatic transmission: Do not dis-
connect the 12 V battery even if the vehicle is les

Standby mode (extension of the starter battery\bs
period out of use)

q Standby mode function
\bThis function is not available for all models.
If standby mode is activated, energy loss will be
minimized during extended periods of non-opera-
tion.
Standby mode is characterized by the following:
= The starter battery is preserved.
= The maximum non-operational time appears
on the media display.
= The connection to online services is interrup-
ted.
= The ATA (anti-thes alarm system) is not availa-
ble.
= The interior protection and tow-away alarm
functions are not available.
= The function for detecting collisions for a
parked vehicle is not available.
If the following conditions are fulNlled, standby
mode can be activated or deactivated using the multimedia system:
= The vehicle is switched on.
= The vehicle has not been started.
Exceeding the vehicle\bs displayed non-operational
time may cause inconvenience; i.e. it cannot be
guaranteed that the starter battery will reliablystart the vehicle.
Charge the starter battery in the following situa- tions:
= The vehicle\bs non-operational time must be
extended.
= The state of charge of the starter battery is
insuPcient for standby mode.\bStandby mode is automatically deactivated
when the vehicle is switched on.

Driving and driving safety systems
Driving systems and your responsibility
Your vehicle is equipped with driving systems that
assist you in driving, parking and maneuvering thevehicle. The driving systems are only aids. Theyare not a substitute for you paying attention to
your surroundings and do not relieve you of your
responsibility pertaining to road traPc law. The
driver is always responsible for maintaining a safe
distance to the vehicle in front, for vehicle speed, for braking in good time and for staying in lane.Pay attention to the traPc conditions at all times
and intervene when necessary. Be aware of the

limitations regarding the safe use of these sys-tems.
Driving systems can neither reduce the risk of an accident if you fail to adapt your driving style nor
override the laws of physics. They cannot always take into account road, weather or traPc condi-
tions.\bSome driving systems can regulate or limit the speed to a previously set value. Draw atten-tion to the stored speed when changing driv-
ers.
Information on vehicle sensors and cameras
Some driving and driving safety systems use cam- eras as well as radar or ultrasonic sensors to
monitor the area in front of, behind or next to the vehicle.

If the area around vehicle sensors or cameras
is covered, damaged or dirty, certain driving
and safety systems cannot function correctly.
There is a risk of an accident.
Keep the area around vehicle sensors or
cameras clear of any obstructions and
clean.Have damage to the bumper, radiator
grille or stone chipping in the area of the
front and rear windows repaired at a
qualiNed specialist workshop.
Keep the areas around the sensors and cameras
in particular free of dirt, ice and slush (  page 294). The sensors and cameras must
not be covered and the detection areas around them must be kept clear. Do not attach additional
license plate bracket, advertisements, stickers, wraps or stone chip protection Nlms in the detec-
tion range of the sensors and cameras. Make sure

that there are no overhanging loads protruding
into the detection area.
If there is damage to a bumper or the radiator grille, or aser an impact, have the function of the
sensors checked at a qualiNed specialist work-
shop. Have damage or stone chipping around the cameras on the front and rear passenger com-
partment windows repaired at a qualiNed special-
ist workshop.

Functions of ABS
The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) regulates the
brake pressure in critical driving situations:
= During braking, for instance, at maximum full-
stop braking or if there is insuPcient tire trac-
tion, the wheels are prevented from locking.
