Notes on loading the vehicle
&DANGER Risk of exhaust gas poisoning
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the tail-
gate is open when the engine is running, espe-
cially if the vehicle is in motion.
Always switch o"M the engine before
opening the tailgate.Never drive with the tailgate open.Objects in the deployment area of an air bag may prevent the air bag from functioning correctly.Observe the notes on protection provided by the
air bag .&WARNING Risk of injury from unsecured
items in the vehicle
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured su"Pciently, they could slip, tip
over or be thrown around and thereby hit vehi- cle occupants.
There is a risk of injury, particularly in the
event of sudden braking or a sudden change
in direction.
Always stow objects in such a way that
they cannot be thrown around.Before the journey, secure objects, lug-
gage or loads against slipping or tipping
over.&WARNING Risk of injury due to objects
being stowed incorrectly
If objects in the vehicle interior are stowed
incorrectly, they can slide or be thrown around
and hit vehicle occupants. In addition, cup
holders, open storage spaces and mobile
phone receptacles cannot always retain all
objects within.
There is a risk of injury, particularly in the
event of sudden braking or abrupt changes in
direction.
Always store objects such that they can-
not be thrown around in such situations.Always make sure that objects do not
protrude from storage spaces, parcel
nets or storage nets.Close the lockable storage spaces before
starting a journey.Stow and secure objects that are heavy,
hard, pointed, sharp-edged, fragile or too

&WARNING Risk of accident from objects in
the driver\bs footwell and front-passenger
footwell
Objects in the driver\bs footwell and front-
passenger footwell may impede pedal travel or
block a depressed pedal.
This jeopardizes the operating and road safety
of the vehicle.
Stow all objects in the vehicle securely so that they cannot get into the driver\bs
footwell or front-passenger footwell.Always install the "Ooor mats securely
and as prescribed in order to ensure that
there is always su"Pcient clearance for
the pedals.Do not use loose "Ooor mats and do not
lay multiple "Ooor mats on top of one
another.
Vehicles with automatic front-passenger air bag
shuto"M: objects trapped under the front-
passenger seat may interfere with the function of
the automatic front-passenger air bag shuto"M or
damage the system. Please observe the notes on
the function of the automatic front -passenger air bag shuto"M ( page 51).&WARNING !

cigarette lighter
You can su"Mer burns if you touch the hot heat-
ing element or the hot socket of the cigarette
lighter.
In addition, "Oammable materials can catch "Nre
if:
= you drop the hot cigarette lighter.
= children e.g. hold the hot cigarette lighter
to objects.
Always hold the cigarette lighter by the knob.Always make sure that the cigarette
lighter is out of the reach of children.Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.&WARNING Risk of burns from the tailpipe
and tailpipe trims
The exhaust tailpipe and tailpipe trims can
become very hot. If you come into contact
with these parts of the vehicle, you could burn
yourself.
Always be particularly careful around the tailpipe and the tailpipe trims and super-
vise children especially closely in this
area.Allow vehicle parts to cool down before
touching them.\bLeather is a natural product. It exhibits natural
surface properties such as di"Merences in
structure, marks caused by growth and injury or subtle color di"Merences. These surface
properties are characteristics of leather and not material faults. Leather is also subject toa natural aging process during which the sur-
face properties change.The handling characteristics of your vehicle are
dependent on the distribution of the load within the vehicle. You should bear the following in mind
when loading the vehicle:
= Do not exceed the permissible total mass or
the gross axle weight rating of the vehicle
(including load and occupants). The values are
speci"Ned on the vehicle identi"Ncation plate on
the vehicle\bs B-pillar.
= The load must not protrude above the upper
edge of the seat backrests.
= Always use the partition net when transporting
objects in the cargo compartment.
= Always place the load behind unoccupied
seats if possible.
= Secure the load using the cargo tie-down rings
and distribute the load evenly.
Notes on driving with a roof load = Distribute the roof load and the load inside the
vehicle evenly, placing heavy objects at the
bottom. Also comply with the notes on loading the vehicle.Seats and stowing121

=Drive attentively, and avoid abrupt starts, brak-
ing and steering as well as rapid cornering.
= When transporting roof loads and when the
vehicle is fully loaded or fully occupied, select
drive programs  and $ . These are

&WARNING Risk of becoming trapped when
adjusting the seats
When you adjust a seat, you may trap yourself
or a vehicle occupant.
When adjusting a seat, make sure that no one has any body parts in the sweep
of the seat.&WARNING Risk of accident if the seat and
seat backrest are not engaged
The seat and seat backrest can fold forwards.
There is a risk of the following, in particular: = The vehicle occupant may be pressed
against the seat belt. The seat belt cannot
protect as intended and could cause addi- tional injury.

=A child restraint system will no longer be
properly supported or positioned and will
no longer ful"Nll its function as intended.
= The seat backrest will not be able restrain
objects or goods in the cargo compart-
ment.
Always ensure that the seat and seat backrest
are engaged, in particular:
= Before persons travel in the vehicle while
sitting on a seat with the easy entry and
exit feature
= A"ser the seat has been adjusted.
= A"ser the easy entry and exit feature has
been used
= A"ser the cargo compartment enlargement
has been folded forwardsAlways ensure that all vehicle occupants have
their seat belts fastened correctly and are sitting
properly. Particular attention must be paid to chil- dren.If you no longer require the folded-down rear seat
backrest as a load area, fold the backrest back into place.
Make sure that the red marking of the lock veri"N-
cation indicator is no longer visible. Otherwise,
the seat backrest is not locked.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, a message
will be displayed on the instrument cluster instead
of the red lock veri"Ncation indicator.
Folding the rear seats forwards mechanically
Depending on the vehicle equipment, you can fold
the outer seat backrests forwards mechanically.Move the driver\bs or front passenger seat for-
wards, if necessary.To fold the le"s and right seat backrests for-
wards: if necessary, insert the head restraints
for the seat backrests (  page 110).Pull release lever 1.Fold the corresponding seat backrest for-

Fold the rear seat armrest back if necessary.To fold the center seat backrest forwards: press release catch 3.Fold seat backrest 2 forwards.
Observe the following recommendations:
= If you wish to fold only one of the outer seat
backrests forwards, it is recommended thatyou fold the right seat backrest forwards.
= If you wish to fold one of the outer seat backr-
ests forwards together with the center seat backrest, it is recommended that you fold thele"s and center seat backrests forwards.
Folding the rear seats forwards electrically
If a seat in the second row of seats is not engaged
and locked, this will be shown on the multifunc- tion display on the instrument cluster.Ensure that the center seat backrest is in an
upright position.To fold the le"s or right seat backrest for-
wards: brie"Oy press one of buttons 1.
The head restraint in the rear passenger com-
partment will move into a suitable position.
The rear seat will fold forwards. The center
seat backrest will fold forwards together with

Observe the following recommendations:
= If you wish to fold only one of the outer seat
backrests forwards, it is recommended thatyou fold the right seat backrest forwards.
= If you wish to fold one of the outer seat backr-
ests forwards together with the center seat backrest, it is recommended that you fold thele"s and center seat backrests forwards.
q Folding the rear seat backrest back*NOTE Damage caused by trapping the
seat belt when folding back the seat back-
rest
The seat belt could become trapped and thus
damaged when the seat backrest is folded
back.
Make sure that the seat belt is not trap-
ped when folding back the seat backrest.Folding back the rear seat mechanicallyMove the driver\bs or front passenger seat for-
wards, if necessary.Swivel seat backrest 1 back until it engages.Make sure that the red marking of the lock
veri"Ncation indicator is no longer visible. Oth-

The rear seat will fold back. The center seat backrest will fold back together with the le"s-
hand seat backrest.

seats forwards
Requirements: = The seats and the seat backrests on the sec-
ond row of seats have been moved forwards
su"Pciently.Pull release catch 1 for the seat backrest
forwards.Fold the seat backrest forwards.q Folding back the seat backrest on the third row
of seats
Requirements: = The seats and the seat backrests on the sec-
ond row of seats have been moved forwards
su"Pciently.Swing the seat backrest back until it audibly
engages.
EASY-PACK cargo compartment cover and parti-
tioning net cassette
q Notes on the cargo compartment cover
&WARNING Risk of injury or death due to
poorly secured objects
The cargo compartment cover alone cannot
secure or restrain heavy objects, items of lug-
gage or heavy loads.
You could be hit by an unsecured load, partic-
ularly in the event of abrupt changes in direc-
tion, sudden braking or an accident.
Always stow objects in such a way that
they cannot be thrown around.Secure objects, luggage or loads against
slipping or tipping over, e.g. by using tie
downs, even if you are using the cargo
compartment cover.*NOTE Damage to the cargo compartment
cover when loading the vehicle
The cargo compartment cover may be dam-
aged when the vehicle is being loaded.
Do not place any objects above the
lower edge of the side windows or on the

qExtending/retracting the cargo compartment
cover
ExtendingPull the cargo compartment cover back by grab handle 1 and hook it into brackets 2
on the le"s and right.RetractingRemove the cargo compartment cover from
the brackets on the le"s and right.Guide the cargo compartment cover forwards
using grab handle 1 until it is fully retracted.
The rolled-up cargo compartment cover can be
used in two positions:
= Folded 45° upwards for loading (fold down
before commencing your journey)
= Horizontal position
q Installing/removing the cargo compartment
cover
Requirements
= The cargo compartment cover is rolled up.
Removing the cargo compartment coverPress end cap 1 on the le"s or right inwards.Pull out the cargo compartment cover back-
wards.
Stowing the cargo compartment cover
Depending on the vehicle variant, the cargo com-
partment cover can be stowed under the cargo "Ooor.

Open the cargo "Ooor .To insert: place the cargo compartment cover
in brackets 1, "Nrst on the le"s and then the
right. Comply with the instructions on the
vehicle to ensure it is seated correctly.To remove: push the cargo compartment
cover slightly to the le"s using grab handle 2.Remove the cargo compartment cover from
brackets 1, "Nrst on the right and then on the
le"s.Installing the cargo compartment coverInsert the cargo compartment cover in brack-
ets 1 on the le"s and right.
The end caps of the cargo compartment cover
will engage audibly.q Installing/removing the partitioning net cas-
sette
Requirements: = The partitioning net has been rolled up.
