&WARNING Risk of accident due to Active
Speed Limit Assist adapting the vehicle\bs speed
The speed adopted by Active Speed Limit
Assist may be too high or incorrect in some
individual cases, such as:
= at speed limits below 12 mph (20 km/h)
= in wet conditions or in fog
= when towing a trailer
Ensure that the driven speed complies
with tra"Pc regulations.Adjust the driving speed to suit current
tra"Pc and weather conditions.
qFunction of route-based speed adaptation
When Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is activa-
ted, the vehicle speed will be adapted accordingly
to the route events ahead. Depending on the drive program selected, the vehicle negotiates a routeevent ahead in an economical, comfortable or
dynamic manner. When the route event has been
passed, the vehicle accelerates again to the stored speed. The set distance to the vehicle in
front, vehicles detected ahead and speed restric-
tions ahead are taken into account.
You can activate and deactivate route-based
speed adaptation in the multimedia system ( page 204).
The following route events are taken into account: = Bends
= T-intersections, tra"Pc circles and toll stations
= Turns and exits
= Tra"Pc jams ahead (only with Live Tra"Pc Infor-
mation )\bWhen the toll station is reached, Active Dis- tance Assist DISTRONIC adopts the speed asthe stored speed.
Also, the speed is reduced if the turn signal indi-
cator to change lanes is switched on and one of
the following situations is detected:
= Turning at intersections
= Driving on slowing-down lanes
= Driving on lanes adjacent to slowing-down
lanes
The driver is responsible for choosing the rightspeed and observing other road users. This
applies in particular to intersections, tra"Pc circles
and tra"Pc lights because route-based speed
adaptation does not brake the vehicle to a stand-
still.
When route guidance is active, the "Nrst speed
adjustment is carried out automatically. If the turn signal indicator is switched on, the selected route
is con"Nrmed and further speed adjustment is acti-
vated.
Speed adaptation is canceled in the following
cases:
= If the turn signal indicator is switched o"M
before the route event.
= If the driver depresses the accelerator or
brake pedal during the process.
System limits
Route-based speed adaptation does not take right
of way regulations into account. The driver is
responsible for complying with road tra"Pc regula-
tions and driving at a suitable speed.Driving and parking203

The speed adaptation made by the system maynot always be suitable, particularly in the following
situations:
= the road\bs course not clearly visible
= Road narrowing
= varying maximum permissible speeds in indi-
vidual lanes, forexample at toll stations
= wet road surfaces, snow or ice
= when towing a trailer
In these situations the driver must intervene
accordingly.&WARNING Risk of accident in spite of
route-based speed adaptation
Route-based speed adaptation can malfunc-
tion or be temporarily unavailable in the fol-
lowing situations:
= If the driver does not follow the calculated
route
= If map data is not up-to-date or available
= In the event of roadworks
=
In bad weather or road conditions
= If the accelerator pedal is depressed
= In the event of electronically displayed
speed limitationsAdapt the speed to the tra"Pc situation.

qFunction of Active Stop-and-Go Assist
Active Stop-and-Go Assist helps you when in traf- "Nc jams on multi-lane roads with separate road-
ways by automatically pulling away within up to
60 seconds and with moderate steering maneu-
vers. It orients itself using the vehicle in front and
lane markings. Active Stop-and-Go Assist auto-
matically maintains a safe distance from the vehi- cle in front and vehicles cutting in.
Active Stop-and-Go Assist requires you, as the driver, to keep your hands on the steering wheel
at all times so that you are able to intervene at any time to correct the course of the vehicle and
keep it in lane. Observe the notes on driving sys- tems and your responsibility; you may otherwise
fail to recognize dangers ( page 186).

qFunction of Active Steering Assist
Active Steering Assist is available up to a speed of
130 mph (210 km/h). The system helps you to
stay in the center of the lane by means of moder- ate steering interventions. Depending on the
speed at which you are driving, Active Steering Assist uses the vehicles ahead and lane markings
as a reference.
\bDepending on the country, Active Steering
Assist can use the surrounding tra"Pc as a ref-
erence in the lower speed range. If necessary, Active Steering Assist can then also provideassistance when driving outside the center of
the lane to form an emergency corridor, for
example.
If the detection of lane markings and vehicles ahead is impaired, Active Steering Assist switchesto passive mode. The system provides no support
in this case.

ing wheel" prompt\bDuring the transition from active to passive
status, the Ø symbol is shown as enlarged
and "Oashing. When the passive state is
reached, the Ø symbol is displayed in
gray.\bDepending on the selected vehicle settings,
Active Steering Assist may be unavailable.
Steering and touch detection
The driver is required to keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times and be able to inter-
vene at any time to correct the course of the vehi-
cle and keep it in lane. The driver must expect a change from active to passive mode or vice versa at any time.

If the system detects that the driver has not
steered the vehicle for a considerable period of time or has removed their hands from the steeringwheel, display 1 appears. If the driver still does
not steer the vehicle, a warning tone sounds in
addition to the visual warning message.
If the driver does not react to the warning for a
considerable period, the system may initiate an emergency stop ( page 209).
The warning is not issued or is stopped as soon as
the system detects that the driver is touching the
steering wheel or steering.
Touch detection may be limited or may not func-
tion if there is no direct contact between hand
and steering wheel, e.g. when you are wearing
gloves or if there is a steering wheel cover on the steering wheel.
If Active Steering Assist detects that a system limit has been reached, a visual warning is issuedand a warning tone sounds.
Observe the notes on driving systems and your
responsibility; you may otherwise fail to recognize
dangers ( page 186).
System limits
Active Steering Assist has a limited steering tor- que for lateral guidance. In some cases, the steer-
ing intervention is not su"Pcient to keep the vehi-
cle in the lane or to drive through exits.
The system may be impaired or may not function
in the following instances:
= There is poor visibility, e.g. due to snow, rain,
fog, heavy spray, highly variable light condi-
tions or strong shadows on the road.
= There is glare, e.g. from oncoming tra"Pc,
direct sunlight or re"Oections.
= *nsu"Pcient illumination of the road.=
The windshield is dirty, fogged up, damaged or
covered in the vicinity of the camera, e.g. by a
sticker.
= No, or several, unclear lane markings are pres-
ent for one lane, or the markings change
quickly, such as in a construction area or at
intersections.
= The lane markings are worn away, dark or cov-
ered up, e.g. by dirt or snow.
= If the distance to the vehicle in front is too
short and thus the lane markings cannot be
detected.
= The road is narrow and winding.
= There are obstacles in the lane or projecting
out into the lane, such as object markers.
The system does not provide assistance in the fol-
lowing conditions:
= On tight bends and when turning.
= When crossing intersections.
= At tra"Pc circles or toll stations.
= When towing a trailer.
= When the tire pressure is too low.208Driving and parking
