Continue to turn ratchet wrench 3 until the
tire is raised a maximum of 1.2 in (3 cm) o"M
the ground.Loosen and remove the wheel (  page 379).
Removing a wheel
Requirements
= The vehicle is raised (  page 377).

You could otherwise fail to recognize
dangers.
When changing a wheel, avoid applying any force
to the brake discs, as this could impair the level of
comfort when braking.
*NOTE Damage to threading from dirt on
wheel boltsDo not place wheel bolts in sand or on a
dirty surface.Completely unscrew the wheel bolts.Remove the wheel.
Installing a new wheel
Requirements
= The wheel that is to be replaced is removed
(  page 379).

You could otherwise fail to recognize
dangers.&WARNING Risk of accident from losing a
wheel
Oiled, greased or damaged wheel bolt/wheel
nut threads or wheel hub/wheel mounting
bolt threads can cause the wheel bolts/wheel nuts to come loose.
Never oil or grease the threads.In the event of damage to the threads,
contact a quali"Ned specialist workshop
immediately.Have the damaged wheel bolts or dam-
aged hub threads replaced.Do not continue driving.Observe the information on the choice of tires
(  page 371).
For tires with a speci"Ned direction of rotation, an
arrow on the side wall of the tire indicates the cor-
rect direction of rotation. Observe the direction of rotation when installing.
Place the wheel to be installed on the wheelhub and push it on.&WARNING Risk of injury from tightening
wheel bolts and nuts
If you tighten the wheel bolts or wheel nuts
when the vehicle is raised, the jack could tip.
Only tighten wheel bolts or wheel nuts
when the vehicle is on the ground.Wheels and tires379

Observe the instructions and safety notes on
"Changing a wheel" (  page 371).For safety reasons, only use wheel bolts which
have been approved by Mercedes-Benz and
for the wheel in question.*NOTE Damage to paintwork of the wheel
rim when screwing in the "Nrst wheel bolt
If the wheel has too much play when screwing
in the "Nrst wheel bolt, the wheel rim paint can
be damaged.
Press the wheel "Nrmly against the wheel
hub when screwing in the "Nrst wheel
bolt.Tighten the wheel bolts evenly in a diagonal pattern in the order indicated until they are "Nnger-tight.If the collapsible spare wheel has been instal-
led, in"Oate the collapsible spare wheel
(  page 384).Lower the vehicle (  page 380).Lowering the vehicle a"ser a wheel change
Requirements:
= The new wheel has been mounted
(  page 379).
Observe the information on tire pressure
(  page 353).
Place the ratchet wrench onto the hexagon
nut of the jack so that the lettering "AB" is visi-
ble.To lower the vehicle: turn the ratchet wrench
of the jack counter-clockwise.Tighten the wheel bolts evenly in a diagonal pattern in the order indicated 1 to 5 with a
maximum of 59 lb-"s (80 Nm).Then tighten the wheel bolts evenly in a diago-
nal pattern in the order indicated 1 to 5 to
the speci"Ned tightening torque of 111 lb-"s
(150 Nm).&WARNING Risk of accident due to incor-
rect tightening torque
The wheels could come loose if the wheel
bolts or wheel nuts are not tightened to the
prescribed torque.
Ensure that the wheel bolts or wheel
nuts are tightened to the prescribed
tightening torque.If you are not sure, do not move the vehi-
cle. Contact a quali"Ned specialist work-
shop and have the tightening torque checked immediately.Check the tire pressure of the newly mounted
wheel and adjust accordingly.380Wheels and tires

\bThe following does not apply if the new wheelis an emergency spare wheel.Vehicles with a tire pressure loss warning sys-tem: restart the tire pressure loss warning sys-

Emergency spare wheel
Notes on the emergency spare wheel
&WARNING Risk of accident caused by
incorrect wheel and tire dimensions
The wheel or tire sizes and the tire type of the
emergency spare wheel or spare wheel and
the wheel to be replaced may di"Mer. The emer-
gency spare wheel or spare wheel can signi"N-
cantly impair driving characteristics of the
vehicle.
To prevent hazardous situations:
Drive carefully.Never install more than one emergency
spare wheel or spare wheel that di"Mers
in size.Only use an emergency spare wheel or spare wheel brie"Oy.Do not deactivate ESP n
.Have the emergency spare wheel or
spare wheel of a di"Merent size replaced
at the nearest quali"Ned specialist work-
shop. The new wheel must have the cor-
rect dimensions.\bThe emergency spare wheel is fastened in the
load compartment under the load compart-
ment "Ooor.
Observe the following notes on installing an emer-
gency spare wheel:
= The maximum permissible speed with an
emergency spare wheel installed is 50 mph
(80 km/h).
= Do not install the emergency spare wheel with
snow chains.
= Replace the emergency spare wheel a"ser six
years at the latest, regardless of wear.
= Use the wheel bolts that are included with the
emergency spare wheel.
= Check the tire pressure of the emergency
spare wheel installed. Correct the pressure as
necessary.\bThe speci"Ned tire pressure is stated on the
label of the emergency spare wheel.\bVehicles with a tire pressure monitoring sys-
tem: if an emergency spare wheel is installed,
the tire pressure monitoring system cannot
function reliably. For a few minutes a"ser an
emergency spare wheel is installed, the sys- tem may still display the tire pressure of the
removed wheel. Only restart the system again when the emergency spare wheel has been
replaced with a new wheel.

housing and a"Px it to the instrument cluster
within the driver\bs "Neld of vision.Remove the tire in"Oation compressor from the
stowage space under the trunk "Ooor.

in"Oation compressor housing.Insert plug 7 of "Nller hose 1 in the socket
on the tire in"Oation compressor and then turn
it until plug 7 engages.Unscrew the cap from the valve on the emer-
gency spare wheel.Screw union nut 2 of "Nller hose 1 onto the

Press the start/stop button once to switch on
the power supply (  page 151).Press On/O"M switch 4 on the tire in"Oation
compressor to I.
The tire in"Oation compressor is switched on.
The tire is in"Oated. The tire pressure appears
on manometer 5.Pump the tire to the speci"Ned tire pressure.\bThe speci"Ned tire pressure is stated on the

When the speci"Ned tire pressure has been
reached, press on and o"M switch 4 on the
tire in"Oation compressor to 0.
The tire in"Oation compressor is switched o"M.Press the start/stop button to switch o"M the
power supply.If the tire pressure is higher than the speci"Ned
pressure, press pressure release valve button
6 until the correct tire pressure has been
reached.Unscrew union nut 2 of "Nller hose 1 from
the valve.Screw the valve cap of the emergency spare
wheel onto the valve again.Stow "Nller hose 1 and plug 3 in the lower
section of the tire in"Oation compressor hous-
ing.Stow the tire in"Oation compressor in the vehi-

Notes on the collapsible spare wheel
&WARNING Risk of accident caused by
incorrect wheel and tire dimensions
The wheel or tire sizes and the tire type of the
emergency spare wheel or spare wheel and
the wheel to be replaced may di"Mer. The emer-
gency spare wheel or spare wheel can signi"N-
cantly impair driving characteristics of the
vehicle.

The collapsible spare wheel is an emergency
spare wheel which is only suitable for use for a
limited period of time and in a restricted manner in the event of a "Oat tire (e.g. until the nearest
workshop).
The tire sidewalls are folded when in transport
mode. Before use, the collapsible spare wheel has
to be in"Oated with the accompanying compressor.
Check the tire pressure of the collapsible spare
wheel once installed. Correct the pressure as
necessary.
The maximum permissible speed with a collapsi- ble spare wheel installed is 50 mph (80 km/h).
Do not install the collapsible spare wheel withsnow chains.
Replace the collapsible spare wheel a"ser six years
at the latest, regardless of wear.

\bVehicles with a tire pressure loss warning sys-tem: if a collapsible spare wheel is installed,
the tire pressure loss warning system cannot function reliably. Only restart the system
again when the collapsible spare wheel has been replaced with a new wheel.
Vehicles with a tire pressure monitoring sys-
tem: if a collapsible spare wheel is installed
the tire pressure monitoring system cannot
function reliably. For a few minutes a"ser an
emergency spare wheel is installed, the sys- tem may still display the tire pressure of the
removed wheel. Only restart the system again when the collapsible spare wheel has beenreplaced with a new wheel.

Removing the collapsible spare wheel
The collapsible spare wheel is located under the
cargo compartment "Ooor.
Observe the information on mounting tires
(  page 371).Open the tailgate.Open the cargo compartment "Ooor.Remove the collapsible spare wheel.

Requirements:
= Mount the collapsible spare wheel as descri-
bed (  page 379).
= Remove the tire in"Oation compressor from the
storage space under the trunk "Ooor
(  page 333).
*NOTE Damage to the collapsible spare
wheel when lowering the vehicle
Lowering the vehicle without previously in"Oat-
ing the collapsible spare wheel can damage its
rim.
*n"Oate the collapsible spare wheel using
the tire in"Oation compressor before low-
ering the vehicle.*NOTE Overheating due to the tire in"Oation
compressor running too longDo not run the tire in"Oation compressor
for longer than ten minutes without inter- ruption.Pull connector 4 and the hose out of the
housing.Unscrew the cap from the valve on the col- lapsible spare wheel.Screw union nut 1 of the hose onto the

Make sure on and o"M switch 3 of the tire
in"Oation compressor is set to 0.Insert connector 4 into the cigarette lighter
socket or into a 12 V socket (  page 124) in
your vehicle.Switch on the power supply (  page 151).Press on and o"M switch 3 on the tire in"Oation
compressor to I.
The tire in"Oation compressor is switched on.
The tire is in"Oated. The tire pressure is shown
on manometer 2.Pump the tire to the speci"Ned tire pressure.\bThe speci"Ned tire pressure is printed on the
yellow label of the collapsible spare wheel.When the speci"Ned tire pressure has been
reached, press on and o"M switch 3 on the

&WARNING Risk of accident due to
improper work on two-way radios
If two-way radios are manipulated or retro"Nt-
ted incorrectly, the electromagnetic radiation
from the two-way radios can interfere with the vehicle electronics and jeopardize the operat-
ing safety of the vehicle.
You should have all work on electrical
and electronic components carried out
at a quali"Ned specialist workshop.&WARNING Risk of accident due to
improper operation of two-way radios
If you use two-way radios in the vehicle
improperly, their electromagnetic radiation
can disrupt the vehicle\bs electronics. This is
the case in the following situations, in particu-
lar:
= The two-way radio is not connected to an
exterior antenna.
= The exterior antenna is installed incor-
rectly or is not a low-re"Oection antenna.
This could jeopardize the operating safety of
the vehicle.
Have the low-re"Oection exterior antenna
installed at a quali"Ned specialist work-
shop.When operating two-way radios in the
vehicle, always connect them to the low-
re"Oection exterior antenna.*NOTE Invalidation of the operating permit
due to failure to comply with the instruc-
tions for installation and use
The operating permit may be invalidated if the instructions for installation and use of two-wayradios are not observed.
Only use approved frequency bands.Observe the maximum permissible out-put power in these frequency bands.Only use approved antenna positions.386Technical data
