active settings deviate from the standard set-
tings.
Function o"M: the next time the vehicle is started
the A drive program is set automatically. The
ECO start/stop function is activated automati-
cally.

Select Individual .Select and set a category.
Setting the H drive program
Select Hybrid.Select Route Based or Standard .
If route guidance is active and the Route
Based option has been activated, the electri-cal energy is distributed intelligently over the
entire route. In built-up areas, electric mode is
preferred, while on the freeway the combus- tion engine is used.
With the Standard option, the vehicle drives in
its standard drive program (

\bThe actual (maximum) values that can be ach-
ieved for engine output and engine torque
may deviate from the certi"Ned values within
the country-speci"Nc guidelines for permissible
tolerances (basis: UN-ECE No. 85 or country-
speci"Nc guidelines).
Variables that can in"Ouence this are, for
example:
= Sea level
= Fuel quality
= Outside temperature
= Operating temperature of the engine
Adjust your driving style accordingly.
The U warning lamp in the driver\bs display
is on until the engine has reached operating
temperature.\bThe values displayed serve only as orienta-
tion. The values for engine output and engine
torque shown on the central display may devi- ate from the actual values.\bThe U warning lamp to show the power
output limitation a"ser starting the vehicle is

If the engine speed is higher than the idle
speed and you engage the transmission posi-
tion [ or ^, the vehicle may accelerate
sharply.
If you engage the transmission position
[ or ^ when the vehicle is at a stand-
still, always depress the brake pedal
"Nrmly and do not accelerate at the same
time.&WARNING Risk of accident and injury due
to children le"s unattended in the vehicle
If you leave children unattended in the vehicle,
they could, in particular:
= open doors, thereby endangering other
persons or road users.
= get out and be struck by oncoming tra"Pc.
= operate vehicle equipment and become
trapped, for example.
In addition, the children could also set the
vehicle in motion by, for example:
= releasing the parking brake.
= changing the gearbox position.
= starting the vehicle.
Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle.Keep the key out of reach of children.222Driving and parking

Use the DIRECT SELECT lever to switch the trans-
mission position. The current transmission posi-
tion will be shown on the driver\bs display.]Park position^Reverse gear\\Neutral[Drive position
q Engaging reverse gear RDepress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT
SELECT lever upwards past the "Nrst point of
resistance.

q Engaging neutral N
Depress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT
SELECT lever up or down to the "Nrst point of
resistance.\bTo shi"s into neutral \\ with the vehicle
switched on, push the selector lever up or
down for several seconds to the "Nrst point of
resistance.
Subsequently releasing the brake pedal will allow
you to move the vehicle freely, e.g. to push it or
tow it away.
Proceed as follows if you want the automatic transmission to remain in neutral \\, even if the
vehicle is switched o"M or the driver\bs door is
opened:
Depress the brake pedal and engage neutral
\\ when the vehicle is at a standstill.Release the brake pedal.Switch o"M the vehicle.The Risk of Vehicle Rolling Away N Activated
Manually No Automatic Change to P message
appears in the driver\bs display.\bIf you then exit the vehicle leaving the key in the vehicle, the automatic transmission
remains in neutral \\.
The park position ] is automatically re-engaged
as soon as one of the following conditions is met:
= You switch to transmission position [ or ^.
= You press the button ].

*NOTE Damage due to engaging park posi-
tion ] while the vehicle is rolling
If you shi"s the transmission into park position
] while the vehicle is rolling, the transmis-
sion may be damaged.
If the vehicle is rolling, do not open a
door.Only engage park position ] when the

Observe the notes on parking the vehicle
(  page 244).Depress the brake pedal until the vehicle
comes to a standstill.When the vehicle is stationary, press button ] .
When the transmission position display shows
] , the park position is engaged. If the trans-
mission position display ] does not appear,
apply the parking brake and secure the vehicle
to prevent it from rolling away.\bDepending on the situation, it may take a short time until ] is engaged. Therefore,
always pay attention to the transmission posi-
tion display.
Park position ] will be engaged automatically if
one of the following conditions is met:
= You switch the stationary vehicle o"M in trans-
mission position [ or ^.
= You open the driver\bs door when the vehicle is
stationary in transmission position [ or ^.
=
When the vehicle is rolling, you switch if o"M in
transmission position [ or ^ and bring it to
a standstill.
= When the vehicle is rolling, you shi"s to trans-
mission position \\, bring the vehicle to a
standstill and open the driver\bs door when the
vehicle is stationary.
= Engaging park position ] automatically is
required by the vehicle.\bTo maneuver with an open driver\bs door, open
the driver\bs door while the vehicle is station-
ary and engage transmission position [ or
^ again.

qEngaging drive position D
Depress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT
SELECT lever down past the "Nrst point of
resistance.
When the automatic transmission is in transmis-
sion position [, it will shi"s gears automatically.
This depends, among other things, on the follow- ing factors:
= The selected drive program
= The position of the accelerator pedal
=The driving speed
Manual gearshi"sing

You could otherwise fail to recognize
dangers.\bFor plug-in hybrids, observe the information
regarding the regenerative brake system
(  page 214).
When the automatic transmission is shi"sed to
position [, you can manually shi"s it with the

steering wheel paddle shi"ser. If permitted, the
automatic transmission will shi"s to a higher or
lower gear depending on the steering wheel pad- dle shi"ser being pulled.
You have two options for manually shi"sing the
automatic transmission:
= Temporary setting
= Permanent setting
The gears will shi"s automatically when manual
shi"sing is deactivated.
Temporary setting: To activate: pull steering wheel paddle shi"ser
1 or 2.
Manual shi"sing will be activated for a short
time. The transmission position display will
show c and the current gear.\bHow long manual shi"sing stays activated
depends on various factors.
Manual shi"sing can be deactivated automati-
cally in the following cases:
= When the drive program is changed
= When the vehicle is restarted=When transmission position [ is engaged
again
= Driving styleTo shi"s up: pull steering wheel paddle shi"ser
2 .To shi"s down: pull steering wheel paddle
shi"ser 1 .To deactivate: pull and hold steering wheel
paddle shi"ser 2 .
The transmission position display will show
[ .\bYou can also activate or deactivate manual
shi"sing permanently in the multimedia sys-
tem.

Driving
Permanently activate or deactivate the func-
tion.Gearshi"s recommendation
The gearshi"s recommendation assists you in
adopting an economical driving style.
If gearshi"s recommendation 1 appears next
to the transmission position display, shi"s to
the recommended gear.
Using kickdown
Maximum acceleration: depress the accelera-
tor pedal beyond the point of resistance.
To protect against excessively high engine speeds,
the automatic transmission will shi"s up to the

next gear when maximum engine speed has beenreached.
Glide mode function
With an anticipatory driving style, glide mode
helps you to reduce fuel consumption.
Glide mode is characterized by the following:
= The combustion engine is disconnected from
the drivetrain and is still running in neutral.
= The transmission position display [ is shown
in green.
= Vehicles with 48 V on-board electrical system:
the combustion engine can be switched o"M.
All of the vehicle functions remain active.
Glide mode will be activated if the following condi-
tions are met:
= Drive program  is selected.
= The speed is within a suitable range.
= The road\bs course is suitable, e.g. no steep
uphill or downhill gradients or tight bends.
= You do not depress the accelerator or brake
pedal (except for light brake applications).
\bGlide mode can also be activated if you have
selected the "Eco" setting for the drive in drive program .
Glide mode will be deactivated again if one of the
conditions is no longer met.
Glide mode can also be prevented by the following
parameters:
= Incline
= Downhill gradient
= Temperature
= Height
= Speed
= Operating status of the engine
= Tra"Pc situation
Function of 4MATIC
4MATIC ensures that all four wheels are driven. Together with ESP n
and 4ETS, 4MATIC improves
the traction of your vehicle whenever a driven wheel spins due to insu"Pcient traction.
If you fail to adapt your driving style, 4MATIC can
neither reduce the risk of an accident nor override
the laws of physics. 4MATIC cannot take account
of road, weather and tra"Pc conditions. 4MATIC is
only an aid. You are responsible especially for
maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front, for vehicle speed, for braking in good time
and for staying in lane.\bIn wintry road conditions, the maximum e"Mect
of 4MATIC can be achieved only if you use
winter tires (M\fS tires), with snow chains if
necessary.
Refueling
Refueling the vehicle
&WARNING Risk of "Nre or explosion from
fuel
Fuels are highly "Oammable.
Fire, open "Oames, smoking and creating
sparks must be avoided.Before refueling, switch o"M the vehicle
and, if installed, the stationary heater,226Driving and parking

and leave them switched o"M during refu-
eling.&WARNING Risk of injury from fuels
Fuels are poisonous and hazardous to your
health.
Do not swallow fuel or let it come into
contact with skin, eyes or clothing.Do not inhale fuel vapor.Keep children away from fuel.Keep doors and windows closed during
the refueling process.
If you or other people come into contact with
fuel, observe the following:
Immediately rinse fuel o"M your skin with
soap and water.If fuel comes into contact with your eyes, immediately rinse them thoroughly with
clean water. Seek medical attention
immediately.If you swallow fuel, seek medical atten-
tion immediately. Do not induce vomit-
ing.Change immediately out of clothing that has come into contact with fuel.&WARNING Risk of "Nre and explosion due
to electrostatic charge
Electrostatic charge can ignite fuel vapor.
Before you open the fuel "Nller cap or
take hold of the pump nozzle, touch the metallic vehicle body.To avoid creating another electrostatic
charge, do not get into the vehicle again
during the refueling process.*NOTE Damage caused by the wrong fuel
Vehicles with a gasoline engine:
Even small amounts of the wrong fuel could
result in damage to the fuel system, the
engine and the emission control system.
Only refuel with low-sulfur spark-ignition
engine fuel.
This fuel may contain up to 10% ethanol. Your vehicle is suitable for use with E10 fuel.
Never refuel with one of the following fuels: = Diesel
= Gasoline with more than 10% ethanol by
volume, e.g. E15, E85, E100
= Gasoline with more than 3% methanol by
volume, e.g. M15, M30, M85, M100
= Gasoline with additives containing metal
If you have accidentally refueled with the
wrong fuel:
Do not switch on the vehicle.Consult a quali"Ned specialist workshop.Driving and parking227

with a gasoline engine
If you have accidentally refueled with the
wrong fuel:
= Do not switch on the vehicle. Otherwise
fuel can enter the engine.
Even small amounts of the wrong fuel
could result in damage to the fuel system and the engine. The repair costs are high.
Consult a quali"Ned specialist workshop.Have the fuel tank and fuel lines drained
completely.*NOTE Damage to the fuel system due to
over"Nlling the fuel tankOnly "Nll the fuel tank until the pump noz-
zle switches o"M.
If too much fuel has been added due, for
example, to a faulty "Nlling pump:
Do not switch on the vehicle.Consult a quali"Ned specialist workshop.*NOTE Fuel may spray out when you
remove the fuel pump nozzleOnly "Nll the fuel tank until the pump noz-
zle switches o"M.
Requirements
= The vehicle is unlocked.
= Plug-in hybrid with gasoline engine: The fuel
tank was vented before refueling (  page 229). This function is country-
dependent.
Observe the notes on service "Ouids and fuel.
Refuel only with fuel that has at least the octane
rating speci"Ned in the information label in the fuel
"Nller "Oap. Otherwise, engine output may be
reduced and fuel consumption increased.
