Notes on loading the vehicle

Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
g
ases such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the boot
lid is open when the engine is running, espe-
cially if the vehicle is in motion. 
Always switch oM t
he engine before
opening the boot lid. 
Never drive with the boot lid open. Objects in the deployment area of an airbag may
pr
event the airbag from functioning correctly.
Observe the notes on protection provided by the
airbag ( page 55).
Vehicles with rear airbag: also observe the notes
on the rear airbag (  page 62). &

items in the vehicle
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
no
t secured suPciently, they could slip, tip
over or be thrown around and thereby hit vehi-
cle occupants.
There is a risk of injury, particularly in the
event of sudden braking or a sudden change
in direction. 
Always stow objects in such a way that

hey cannot be thrown around. 
Before the journey, secure objects, lug-

age or loads against slipping or tipping
over. &

If objects in the vehicle interior are stowed
incor
rectly, they can slide or be thrown around
and hit vehicle occupants. In addition, cup
holders, open stowage spaces and mobile
phone brackets cannot always retain all
objects they contain.
There is a risk of injury, particularly in the
event of sudden braking or a sudden change
in direction. 
Always stow objects in such a way that

hey cannot be thrown around in such
situations. 
Always make sure that objects do not
pr

otrude from stowage spaces, luggage
nets or stowage nets. 
Close the lockable stowage spaces

point ed, sharp-edged, fragile or bulky
objects in the boot. Observe the notes on the cup holders.
Vehicles with automatic front passenger airbag
shut

and tailpipe trims
The exhaust tailpipe and tailpipe trims can
become v
ery hot. If you come into contact
with these parts of the vehicle, you could burn
yourself. 
Always be particularly careful around the

ailpipe and the tailpipe trims and super-
vise children especially closely in this
area. 
Allow vehicle parts to cool down before
t
ouching them. The driving characteristics of your vehicle are
dependent on t

he distribution of the load within
the vehicle. You should bear the following in mind
when loading the vehicle:
= never exceed the permissible gross mass or
the permissible axle loads for the vehicle
(including occupants).
Information can be found on the vehicle identi-
Ncation plate ( page 487).
= the load must not protrude above the upper
edge of the seat backrests.
= always place the load behind unoccupied
seats if possible.
= secure the load using the luggage net hooks.
Distribute the load on the luggage net hooks
evenly.
Notes on driving with a roof load
= Evenly distribute the roof load, and place
heavy objects at the bottom. Also comply with
the notes on loading the vehicle
( page 149). =
Dr ive attentively, and avoid suddenly pulling
away, braking and steering as well as rapid
cornering.
= When transporting roof loads and when the
vehicle is fully loaded or fully occupied, select
drive programs  and A. These are
designed to focus on stability ( page 225).

Depending on the equipment installed, the boot

overloaded, the box Ooor will lower onto the boot
Ooor when the load reaches approximately 5 kg. 
To remove: pull handle 2 on t
he box. 
To increase the load capacity: push t
he centre
of Ooor 1 downwards to the desired position
and box size. 
To reduce the load capacity: pr
ess button 3. 
To stow: push t
he box in completely using han-
dle 2 until it locks in place. Seats and stowing
