%
This function is an on-demand feature
( pag

e 26).
The rear axle steering is an electromechanical
auxiliar
y steering on the rear axle which adjusts
the steering of the rear wheels according to the
position of the front wheels, depending on the
speed. This results in greater manoeuvrability and
improved driving stability, e.g. when cornering.
Rear axle steering has the following characteris-
tics:
= reduced steering eMort and turning circle
resulting in reduced parking eMort
= improved driving stability, e.g. when cornering
= more direct steering resulting in improved
handling of the vehicle
Observe the notes on snow chains and snow
chain mode ( page 469). ECO start/stop function
ECO start/stop function
%
Depending on the engine, the ECO start/stop
function is no
t available in all drive programs.
Observe the status display on the driver's dis-
play concerning this.
% Plug-in hybrid: t
his function is not available.
The engine will be switched oM aut
omatically in
the following situations if all vehicle conditions for
an automatic engine stop are met:
= You brake the vehicle to a standstill in trans-
mission position h or i.
= Vehicles with a 48 V on-board electrical sys-
tem: you depress the brake pedal when travel-
ling at a low speed.
If the system has detected one of the following
situations, the engine will not stop:
= You stop at a stop sign and there is no vehicle
in front of you.
= The vehicle that stopped in front of you starts
up again. =
Y
ou manoeuvre, turn the steering wheel
sharply or engage reverse gear.
% If the system detects an intelligent stop inhibi-
t

or, e.g. a stop sign, the engine will not stop.
If you activate the HOLD function or engage
the park position j, the engine can be
switched oM in spite of an intelligent stop
inhibitor.
The engine will restart automatically in the follow-
ing cases:
= Y

ou engage transmission position h or k.
= You depress the accelerator pedal.
= The vehicle requires an automatic engine
start.
= You release the brake pedal.
= Vehicles with a 48 V on-board electrical sys-
tem:
- You release the brake pedal on a downhill
gradient and the vehicle does not roll.
- The vehicle rolls on a downhill gradient and
does not automatically enter glide mode at
20 km/h. 218

Displaying the ECO start/stop function on the
dr iver's display:
= The è symbol (green) appears when the
vehicle is at a standstill: the engine was
switched oM by the ECO start/stop function.
= The ç symbol (yellow) appears when the
vehicle is at a standstill: not all vehicle condi-
tions for an engine stop have been met.
= Neither the è symbol nor the ç symbol
appears when the vehicle is at a standstill: an
intelligent stop inhibitor, e.g. a stop sign, has
been detected.
= The s symbol appears: the ECO start/stop
function is deactivated or there is a malfunc-
tion.
If the engine was switched oM by the ECO start/
stop function and you leave the vehicle, a warning
tone will sound and the engine will not be restar-
ted. In addition, the following display message will
appear on the driver's display:

situation. This enables you to check the ePciency
of your driving style and adjust it if necessary. The
ECO display menu shows a ball 2 that will roll
forwards or backwards on a stylised road in the
direction of travel according to the driving charac-
teristics. Driving and parking

green if it is rolling within these lines. Outside the
lines, the ball will light up in orange.
The ECO display assesses the following criteria for
an economical driving style:
= coasting at the right times
= consistent speed
= moderate acceleration
The overall assessment of your driving style "from
start" is indicated using stars 1. It starts with
Nve empty stars, which you can Nll one aser the
other if you drive ePciently. When all Nve stars are
Nlled, a glow will appear in the background.

tion ( pag

ECO Assist is active only in drive pro-
g

rams and A.
ECO Assist analyses data for the vehicle's expec-
t
ed route. This allows the system to optimally
adjust the driving style for the route ahead, save
fuel and recuperate. If the system detects an
event ahead and the vehicle nears the event, ECO
Assist will calculate the optimum speed for maxi-
mum fuel economy and recuperative energy
based on the distance, speed and downhill gradi-
ent.
If the deceleration provided by ECO Assist is not
suPcient, you must also brake with the service
brake. This is especially the case if, for example,
you pull away again in slow-moving traPc and the
distance to the vehicle in front is very short. 1

2 Route event ahead
If a route event that can be dealt with more eP-
cientl
y by adjusting your driving style is detected
ahead, corresponding symbol 2 and the ý
symbol will be displayed in grey.
If you release the accelerator pedal, the ý
symbol will turn green and recuperation in over-
run mode will be initiated. If the deceleration is
not suPcient, also apply the service brake.
The display will disappear as soon as ECO Assist
cannot identify any further recommendations
from the route ahead. 220

guidance is active, ECO Assist will operate with
greater accuracy. The basic function is also availa-
ble without active route guidance. Not all informa-
tion and traPc situations can be foreseen. The
quality depends on the map data.
ECO Assist is only an aid. The driver is responsible
for keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in
front, for vehicle speed and for braking in good
time.
The system may be impaired or may not function
in the following situations:
= If visibility is poor, e.g. due to insuPcient illu-
mination of the road, highly variable shade
conditions, rain, snow, fog or heavy spray.
= If there is glare, e.g. from oncoming traPc,
direct sunlight or reOections.
= If there is dirt on the windscreen in the vicinity
of the multifunction camera or if the camera is
misted up, damaged or obscured.
= If the traPc signs are hard to detect, e.g. due
to dirt, snow or insuPcient lighting, or
because they are covered. =
If t he information in the navigation system's
digital map is incorrect or out-of-date.
= If signs are ambiguous, e.g. road signs in road-
works or in adjacent lanes. Regenerative brake system (plug-in hybrid)
Function of the regenerative brake system
Depending on t
he selected recuperation level, the
electric motor is operated as an alternator when
in overrun mode and during braking in order to
charge the high-voltage battery while driving. As
soon as you take your foot oM the accelerator
pedal when the vehicle is in motion and in trans-
mission position h, recuperation in overrun
mode is initiated.
The higher the recuperation, the more sharply the
vehicle is braked when coasting and the more
electrical energy is fed into the high-voltage bat-
tery.
The deceleration in overrun mode may not be suf-
ficient depending on the driving conditions.
Decelerating to a standstill is not possible. Also
brake with the service brake if necessary. Always Driving and parking

adapt your speed to the driving conditions and

eep a suPcient distance.
The recuperative brake system has the following
characteristics: = supports braking with electronically controlled
brake force boosting
= converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into
electric energy
% If you brake hard, the mechanical brake is
also used. This means t
hat the maximum
recuperative energy cannot be recovered. The
more you drive and brake in an anticipatory
manner, the more ePciently energy can be
recuperated.
System limits
The br
aking eMect of the electric motor during
recuperation in overrun mode may be reduced or
may not be available at all in the following situa-
tions:
= when the high-voltage battery charge level
increases
= if the high-voltage battery is not yet at a nor-
mal operating temperature In these cases, the desired deceleration is set by
t

he brake control system.

If the function is active, data on the further course
of t
he route is evaluated. This includes e.g. road
type, speed limitations and altitude data.
The hybrid system then adapts the operating
strategy to the further course of the route:
= Use of electrical energy and the combustion
engine are adapted.
= State of charge of the high-voltage battery is
controlled accordingly.
= Electrical energy is reserved especially for
electric mode, e.g. urban route sections.
= The vehicle automatically selects the operat-
ing mode. Function of the haptic accelerator pedal (plug-in
