oM
The automatic front passenger airbag shutoM is
able to detect whether the front passenger seat is
occupied by a person or a child restraint system.
The front passenger airbag is enabled or disabled
accordingly. &
WARNING Risk of injur
y or death due to
objects under the co-driver seat
Objects trapped under the co-driver seat can
int
erfere with the function of the automatic
co-driver airbag shutoM or damage the system.
Do not store any objects under the co-
dr
iver seat.
When the co-driver seat is occupied,
mak
e sure that no objects are trapped
under the co-driver seat. When Ntting
a c
hild restraint system to the front
passenger seat, observe the vehicle-speciNc infor-
mation ( page 85). Also, always observe the
notes on rearward-facing or forward-facing child
restraint systems on the front passenger seat
( page 84).
A person on the front passenger seat must
observe the following information:
= Fasten seat belts correctly ( page 48).
= Sit in an almost upright seat position with their
back against the seat backrest. =
Sit wit
h their feet resting on the Ooor, if possi-
ble.
The front passenger airbag may otherwise be dis-
abled by mistake, for example, in the following sit-
uations:
= The front passenger transfers their weight by
supporting themselves on a vehicle armrest.
= The front passenger sits in such a way that
their weight is raised from the seat surface. &
WARNING Risk of injur
y or death due to a
disabled front passenger airbag
The front passenger airbag is disabled when
t
he PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
is lit.
A person in the front passenger seat could
then, for example, come into contact with the
vehicle interior, especially if the person is sit-
ting too close to the cockpit. 58

If the front passenger seat is occupied, always
ensur e that:
= the classiNcation of the person in the front
passenger seat is correct and the front
passenger airbag is enabled or disabled in
accordance with the person in the front
passenger seat.
= the front passenger seat has been moved
as far back as possible.
= the person is seated correctly.
Both before and during the journey,
ensur

e that the status of the front
passenger airbag is correct. If the front passenger seat is occupied, the classi-
Ncation
of t

he person or child restraint system on
the front passenger seat takes place aser the
front passenger airbag shutoM self-test. The
PASSENGER AIR BAG indicator lamps display the
status of the front passenger airbag.
Always observe the notes on the function of the
PASSENGER AIR BAG indicator lamps
( page 59). Function of the PASSENGER AIR BAG indicator

ps Self-test of automatic front passenger airbag shut-
oM When t

he vehicle is switched on, a self-test is per-
formed during which the two PASSENGER AIR
BAG ON and OFF indicator lamps light up simulta-
neously. The status of the front passenger airbag is dis-
pla

yed via the PASSENGER AIR BAG indicator
lamps aser the self-test:
= ON is lit: the front passenger airbag may
deploy during an accident.
The indicator lamp goes out aser 60 seconds.
= ON and OFF are not lit: the front passenger
airbag may deploy during an accident.
= OFF is lit: the front passenger airbag is disa-
bled. It will then not be deployed in the event
of an accident.
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON indicator lamp is
oM, only the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp shows the status of the front passenger air-
bag. The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
may be lit continuously or be oM.
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
and the 6 restraint system warning lamp light
up simultaneously, the front passenger seat may
not be used. Also in this case, do not Nt a child
restraint system to the front passenger seat. Have

tem to the front passenger seat: PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF must be lit continuously. &
WARNING Risk of injur
y or death when
using a rearward-facing child restraint sys-
tem while the front passenger airbag is
enabled
If you secure a child in a rearward-facing child
r
estraint system on the front passenger seat
and the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is oM, the front passenger airbag can
deploy in the event of an accident.
The child could be struck by the airbag.
Always ensure that the front passenger
airbag is disabled. The P

ASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF indicator lamp must be lit.
NEVER use a rearward-facing child
r
estraint system on a seat with an ENA-
BLED FRONT AIRBAG. This can result in
the DEATH of or SERIOUS INJURY to the
CHILD. When Ntting
a c
hild restraint system to the front
passenger seat, observe the vehicle-speciNc infor-
mation ( page 84).
Depending on the child restraint system and the
stature of the child, the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
indicator lamp may be oM. In this case, do not Nt
the rearward-facing child restraint system to the
front passenger seat.
Instead, Nt the rearward-facing child restraint sys-
tem to a suitable rear seat.
Aser Ntting a forward-facing child restraint sys-
tem to the front passenger seat: depending on the
child restraint system and the stature of the child,
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF may be lit continuously or be oM.
Alw
ays observe the following informa-
tion. &
WARNING Risk of injur
y or death due to
incorrect positioning of the forward-facing
child restraint system
If you secure a child in a forward-facing child
r
estraint system on the front passenger seat
that is positioned too close to the cockpit, in
the event of an accident, the child could:
= come into contact with the vehicle interior
if the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is lit, for example
= be struck by the airbag if the PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp is oM.
Always move the front passenger seat as
f

ar back as possible and fully retract the
seat cushion length adjustment. While
doing so, always make sure that the
shoulder belt strap is correctly routed
from the seat belt outlet of the vehicle to
the shoulder belt guide on the child
restraint system. The shoulder belt strap
must be routed forwards and downwards 60

from the seat belt outlet. If necessary,
adjus t the seat belt outlet and the front
passenger seat accordingly.
Always comply with the child restraint
sy

stem manufacturer's installation
instructions. When Ntting
a c
hild restraint system to the front
passenger seat, observe the vehicle-speciNc infor-
mation ( page 84).
If a person is sitting on the front passenger seat:
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF may be lit continuously
or be oM, depending on the person's stature.
A person on the front passenger seat must always
observe the following information:
= If the front passenger seat is occupied by an
adult or a person with a stature corresponding
to that of an adult, the PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF indicator lamp must be oM. This indicates
that the front passenger airbag is enabled.
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is lit continuously, an adult or person
with a build corresponding to that of an adult
must not use the front passenger seat. Instead, they should use a rear seat.
= If t

he front passenger seat is occupied by a
person of smaller stature (e.g. a teenager or
small adult), the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
indicator lamp is either lit continuously or
remains oM, depending on the classiNcation.
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is oM move the front passenger seat
as far back as possible, or the person of
smaller stature should use a rear seat.
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is lit continuously: the person of
smaller stature should not use the front
passenger seat. &
WARNING Risk of injur
y or death when
the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is lit
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lam
p remains lit aser the self-test, the front
passenger airbag is disabled. If the front passenger seat is occupied, always
ensur
e that:
= The classiNcation of the person in the front
passenger seat is correct and the front
passenger airbag is enabled or disabled in
accordance with the person in the front
passenger seat.
= The person is seated properly with a cor-
rectly fastened seat belt.
= The front passenger seat has been moved
as far back as possible. Be sure to also observe the following further rela-
t
ed subjects:

Information on the rear airbag
Points to remember when the rear seat is occu-
pied
The r
ear airbag oMers the occupants on the outer
rear seats additional occupant protection in the
event of certain types frontal impacts. When trig-
gered, the rear airbag deploys between the rear
seat occupant and the front seat. The rear airbag
can help prevent the occupants on the rear seats
from coming into contact with parts of the vehicle
interior in the event of an accident.
To avoid the risks resulting from the deployment
of an airbag, observe the following information:
= Inform persons on the rear seats about the
rear airbag in the front seat.
= A person sitting on the rear seat must adopt
the correct seat position and sit as far back
from the rear airbag as possible. Adjust the
front seats when necessary so that vehicle
occupants are sitting as far back from the air-
bag as possible and at an equal distance to
them.
= Observe the notes on airbag protection
( page 55). To avoid risks resulting from the deployment of
t
he airbag, vehicle occupants on the outer rear
seats must observe the following information in
particular:
= The occupants must always keep their feet on
the Ooor. Otherwise, feet and legs of occu-
pants may be in the deployment area of the
rear airbag.
If an occupant's feet cannot reach the Ooor,
they must adopt the correct seat position and
let their legs hang down the front of the seat.
= The feet or legs of the person on the rear seat
must not rest against the seat backrest of the
front seat, for example. Otherwise, their feet
and legs are in the deployment area of the
rear airbag. This should be taken into consid-
eration especially if you are travelling with a
child on the rear seat.
If you are travelling with a child in the les or
right rear seat, observe the vehicle-speciNc
information: ( page 78). Also, always
observe the notes on rearward-facing or
forward-facing child restraint systems on the
les and right rear seats. =
Mak e sure that the covers for the rear airbags
are not damaged.
= Observe the notes on limitations to the protec-
tion provided by airbags ( page 57). &
WARNING Risk of injur
y due to a damaged
rear airbag cover
If a rear airbag cover is damaged, the rear air-
bag can no long
er function correctly and can
even cause additional injuries when deployed.
Before starting a journey, make sure the
co

vers for the rear airbags are not dam-
aged. If a rear airbag cover is damaged,
disable the rear airbag. Have a damaged
rear airbag cover replaced at a qualiNed
specialist workshop as soon as possible. You can disable or enable the rear airbag via the
multimedia sy

stem ( page 64).
Objects behind the front seat
Objects in the deployment area of the rear air-
bags may prevent the rear airbags from function-
ing correctly. 62

&
WARNING Risk of injur y due to objects
placed in front of the rear airbag cover
Objects in front of the rear airbag cover can
hinder or pr
event the correct deployment of
the rear airbag which is integrated into the
front seat.
The rear airbag can potentially deploy in an
uncontrolled manner and can cause additional
injury to the person on the front seat.
Always stow and secure objects cor-
r
ectly. Observe the notes on loading the vehicle
(
 pag

e 149).
Disabling/enabling the rear airbag
If, aser consideration of the notes and instruc-
tions in this Owner's Manual, you deem the addi-
tional occupant protection provided by the rear
airbag unnecessary, the rear airbag can be disa-
bled. The rear airbags should be disabled in the follow-
ing situations in par

ticular:
= A rearward-facing child restraint system is
secured on the les or right rear seat.
= The person in the rear seat, for example a
child, cannot sit in the correct seat position.
Their feet and legs are potentially in the
deployment area of the rear airbag.
= Due to the position of the front seats, an
occupant's legs, for example, are in the
deployment area of the rear airbag.
= Objects are stored behind the front seat which
are in the deployment area of the rear airbags.
You can disable or enable the rear airbag via the
multimedia system ( page 64). Function of the REAR SEAT AIR BAG indicator

ures independently of each other:
= Tightening the seat belts on the driver's seat
and front passenger seat.
= Closing the side windows.
= Vehicles with sliding sunroof: closing the slid-
ing sunroof. =
V
ehicles with memory function: moving the
front passenger seat to a more favourable seat
position.

US can detect certain impacts, par-
ticularly an imminent rear impact, and take pre-
emptive measures to protect the vehicle occu-
pants. These measures cannot necessarily pre-
vent an imminent impact.
PRE-SAFE n
PLUS can implement the following
measures independently of each other:
= Tightening the seat belts on the driver's seat
and front passenger seat.
= Activating the rear hazard warning lights at a
higher Oashing frequency. =
Incr
easing brake pressure when the vehicle is
stationary. This brake application is cancelled
automatically when the vehicle pulls away.
If an accident did not occur, the pre-emptive
measures that were taken are reversed.
System limits
The system will not initiate any action in the fol-
lowing situations:
= when reversing
or
= when the vehicle is towing a trailer and there
is a risk of a rear impact
The system will not initiate any braking application
in the following situations:
= whilst driving
or
= when entering or exiting a parking space while
using Active Parking Assist Function of PRE-SAFE

Impulse Side can pre-emptively move the
front seat vehicle occupant's upper body towards
the centre of the vehicle. It does this by rapidly
inOating an air cushion in the outer seat side bol-
ster of the seat backrest on the side on which the
impact is anticipated. This increases the distance
between the door and the vehicle occupant.
Vehicles with E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL: the body
can also be slightly raised.

aser an accident
Depending on t
he type and severity of the acci-
dent, and depending on the vehicle's equipment,
the following measures can be implemented, for
example:
= automatic braking (post-collision brake) Occupant safety
65

=
activ ating the hazard warning lights
= triggering an automatic emergency call
( page 414)
= switching oM the engine
To start the vehicle again, switch the vehicle
oM and on once more ( page 210). Depend-
ing on the type and severity of the accident,
you may no longer be able to start the vehicle.
= switching oM the fuel supply
= vehicles with hybrid drive: switching oM the
hybrid system and high-voltage on-board elec-
trical system
= unlocking the vehicle doors
= lowering the side windows
= displaying the emergency guide in the central
display
= switching on the interior lighting
Function of the post-collision brake
Depending on the accident situation, the post-col-
lision brake can minimise the severity of a further
collision or even avoid it. If an accident is detected, the post-collision brake
can im plement automatic braking. When the vehi-
cle has come to a standstill, the electric parking
brake is automatically applied.
The driver can cancel automatic braking by taking
the following actions:
= braking more strongly than automatic braking
= fully depressing the accelerator pedal with
force Safely transporting children in the vehicle
Always observe when children are travelling in the
v
ehicle %
Also strictly observe the safety notes for the
speciNc situation. In t

his way you can recog-
nise potential risks and avoid dangers if chil-
dren are travelling in the vehicle
( page 67).
Be diligent
Bear in mind t
hat negligence when securing a
child in the child restraint system may have seri- ous consequences. Always be diligent in securing
a c

hild carefully before every journey.
Never allow babies and children to travel sitting
on the lap of another vehicle occupant.
To improve protection for children younger than
12 years old or under 1.50 m in height,
Mercedes-Benz recommends you observe the fol-
lowing information:
= Always secure the child in a child restraint sys-
tem suitable for this Mercedes-Benz vehicle.
= The child restraint system must be appropriate
to the age, weight and size of the child.
= The vehicle seat must be suitable for Ntting a
child restraint system ( page 71).
Accident statistics show that children secured on
the rear seats are generally safer than children
secured on the front seats. For this reason,
Mercedes-Benz strongly advises that you Nt a
child restraint system to a rear seat. 66
Occupant safety

The generic term child restraint system
The g eneric term child restraint system is used in
this Owner's Manual. A child restraint system is,
for example:
= a baby car seat
= a rearward-facing child seat
= a forward-facing child seat
= a child booster seat with a backrest and seat
belt guide
Mercedes-Benz recommends using a child
booster seat with a backrest.
The child restraint system must be appropriate to
the age, weight and size of the child.
Observe laws and legal requirements
Always observe the legal requirements when
using a child restraint system in the vehicle.
Make sure that the child restraint system is
approved in accordance with the valid test speciN-
cations and guidelines. Further information can
be obtained at a qualiNed specialist workshop.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you use a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre for this purpose. Only use approved child restraint systems
Onl y child restraint systems that meet the follow-
ing UNECE standards are permitted for use in the
vehicle:
= UN-R44
= UN-R129 (i-Size child restraint systems)
Information on child restraint system approval
categories and details on the approval label on
the child restraint system ( page 72). Detecting risks, avoiding danger
Securing systems for child restraint systems in
t
he vehicle
Only use the following securing systems for child
restraint systems:
= the ISOFIX or i-Size securing rings
= the vehicle's seat belt system
= the Top Tether anchorages
Fitting an ISOFIX or an i-Size child restraint sys-
tem is preferred. Simply attaching to the securing rings on the vehi-
cle can r
educe the risk of Ntting the child restraint
system incorrectly.
When securing a child with the integrated seat
belt of the ISOFIX or i-Size child restraint system,
always comply with the permissible gross weight
for the child and child restraint system
( page 75).
Advantage of a rearward-facing child restraint sys-
tem
It is preferable to transport a baby or a small child
in a suitable rearward-facing child restraint sys-
tem. In this case, the child sits in the opposite
direction to the direction of travel and faces back-
wards.
Babies and small children have comparatively
weak neck muscles in relation to the size and
weight of their head. The risk of injury to the cer-
vical spine during an accident can be reduced in a
rearward-facing child restraint system. Occupant safety
