Activating/deactivating the acoustic lo cking

Changing the unlocking settings
Po ssible unlocking functions of the SmartK ey:

RUn locking the driver's door and fuel filler flap
#To switch between settings: pressthe
% and& buttons simultaneously for
appr oximately six seconds until the battery
ch eck lamp flashes twice.
If th e unlocking function forth e driver's door
and fuel filler flap has been selecte d:
RPressingthe% button a second time cen‐
trally unloc kstheve hicle.
RVe hicles with KEYLESS-GO: Ifyo uto uch
th e inner sur face of the door handle on the driver's door, only
the driver's door and fuel

Re ducing the energy consu mption of the
SmartK ey
Allvehicles: ifyo u do not use theve hicle or a
SmartK eyfor an extended pe riod of time, you
can reduce the energy consum ption of the
re spective SmartK ey.To do so, deactivate the
SmartK eyfunctions.
#To deactivate: pressthe& button on the
SmartK eytwice in rapid succession.
The battery check lamp of the SmartK ey
fl ashes twice brief lyand lights up once.
#To activate: press any button on the Smart‐
Ke y.
% When theve hicle is star ted with the Smart‐
Ke yin thestow age compartment of the cen‐
te r console, the SmartK eyfunctions are
au tomatical lyactivated (
→page 167).
Ve hicles with KEYLESS-GO: Automatic deacti‐

To activate the SmartK eyfunctions:
RPress any button on the SmartK ey.
RMo vethe SmartK ey.
RStart theve hicle with the SmartK eyinthe
stow age compartment of the center console

→page 167).
Inser ting/ removing the mechanical key
#To remo ve:press release knob 1.
Mechanical key2 is pushed out slight ly.
#Pull ou tme chanical key2 until it en gage s in
th e intermediate position.

#Press release knob 1again and fully

Re placing the SmartK eybattery

th e mechanical key,firs t press the button for
locking from the inside while the driver's
door is open. Then proceed tolock the driv‐
er's door using the mechanical key.
#Insertthe mechanical keyas far as it will go
into opening 1inthe co ver.
#Pull and hold the door handle.
#Pull the co ver on the mechanical keyas
st ra ight as possible away from theve hicle
until it releases.
#Re lease the door handle.

Opening the trunk lid

WARNING Risk ofexhaust gas poisoning
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
ga ses such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
ga ses can enter theve hicle interior if the
trunk lid is open when the engine is running,
especially if theve hicle is in motion.
#Alw ays switch off the engine before
opening the trunk lid.
#Ne ver drive with the trunk lid open.

The trunk lid swings upwards when it is
opened.
#Therefore, make sure that there is suf fi‐

ing: With th e trunk lid stopped in an inter‐
mediate position, pull the trunk lid upwards
and release as soon as it begins toopen.

#Pull trunk lid remo teoperating switch 1.

#Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS: move

Ve hicles with trunk lid co nvenience closing:
If an object restricts the trunk lid during the
automatic opening process, the obs tacle de tec‐
tion sy stem stops the trunk lid. The obs tacle
de tection function is only an aid and is not a
substitute foryo ur attentiveness.
Plug-in hybrid: obser vethe no tes in the Supple‐
ment. Otherwise, you may not recognize dan‐
ge rs.
Closing the trunk lid
&
WARNING Risk of injury from unsecured
items in theve hicle
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured
or not secured suf ficientl y,they could slip,
tip ove r or be throw n around and thereby hit
ve hicle occupants.
There is a risk of injur y,particularly in the
ev ent of sudden braking or a sudden change
in direction.
#Alw aysstow objects in such a wayth at
th ey cannot be thro wn around.
#Before the journe y,secure objects, lug‐
ga ge or loads against slipping or tipping
ove r.

WARNING Risk of becoming trapped
duri ng au tomatic closing of the trunk lid
Pa rts of the body could become trapped dur‐
ing automatic closing of the trunk lid. More‐
ove r,people, e.g. children, may be standing
in the closing area or may enter the closing
area during the closing process.
#Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity
of the closing area during the closing
process.
#Use one of thefo llowing options tostop
th e closing process:
RPress thep button on the
SmartK ey.
RPress or pull there mo teoperating
switch on the driver's door.
RPress the closing or locking button
on the trunk lid.
RPull the trunk lid handle.
Ve hicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS: It is also
possible tostop the closing process bymoving
yo ur foot in a kicking motion under there ar
bumper.

If an object restricts the trunk lid during the
automatic closing process, the trunk lid opens again automaticall
y.The automatic reve rsing
function is only an aid and is not a substitute for
yo ur attentiveness.
#When closing, make sure that no body parts
are in the closing area.

WARNING Risk of becoming trapped
despite there ve rsing function
The reve rsing function does not react:
Rto soft, light and thin objects, e.g. fingers.
Rove rth e last Óin (8 mm) of the closing
path.
In these situations in particular, there ve rsing
function cannot pr event someone being trap‐
ped.
#When closing, make surethat no body
parts are in the closing area.
#If someone is trapped, use one of the
fo llowing options:
