Economical driving
For economical driving, there are some tech-
nical requirements that have to be met. The prerequisite for low fuel consumption is a properly adjusted engine. In order to achievelonger life of the vehicle and the most eco-
nomical operation, we recommend you to have the vehicle checked at regular intervals in accordance with the service standards.
Fuel economy and generation of exhaust gas
and noise are highly influenced by personal driving habits as well as the particular operat-
ing conditions. The following points should be observed in order to minimize wear of
brakes, tyres and engine as well as to reduce environmental pollution.
Accelerating and decelerating
Drive according to the traffic conditions and avoid sudden starts, sudden acceleration and
sudden braking, as they will increase fuel consumption.
Shifting
Shift only at an appropriate speed and engine speed. Always use the highest shift position
possible.
Selecting the 4WD drive mode
(4WD vehicles)
The drive mode-selector should be set to
“2WD” when driving on normal roads and
express ways to obtain best possible fuel
economy.
City traffic
Frequent starting and stopping increases the
average fuel consumption. Use roads with smooth traffic flow whenever possible. When driving on congested roads, avoid use of a
low shift position at high engine speeds.
Idling
The vehicle consumes fuel even during
idling. Avoid extended idling whenever pos- sible.
Speed
At higher vehicle speed, more fuel is con- sumed. Avoid driving at full speed. Even a
slight release of the accelerator pedal will save a significant amount of fuel.
Tyre inflation pressure
Check the tyre inflation pressures at regular
intervals. Low tyre inflation pressure increa-ses road resistance and fuel consumption. In addition, low tyre pressures adversely affect
tyre wear and driving stability.
Cargo loads
Do not drive with unnecessary articles in the
luggage compartment. Especially during city
driving where frequent starting and stopping is necessary, the increased weight of the vehi-
cle will greatly affect fuel consumption. Also
avoid driving with unnecessary luggage or carriers, etc., on the roof; the increased air re- sistance will increase fuel consumption.
Cold engine starting
Starting of a cold engine consumes more fuel.
Unnecessary fuel consumption is also caused by keeping a hot engine running. After the
engine is started, commence driving as soon
as possible.
Air conditioning
The use of the air conditioning will increase the fuel consumption.

Driving after drinking alcohol is one of the most frequent causes of accidents.

Running-in recommendations
During the running-in period for the first 1,000 km (620 miles) it is advisable to drive your new vehicle using the following precautions as a guideline to aid long life as well as future economy and performance.
z Do not race the engine at high speeds.
z Avoid rapid starting, accelerating, braking and prolonged high-speed running.
z Keep to the running-in speed limit shown below.
Please note that the legal speed limits displayed must be adhered to.
z Do not exceed loading limits.

Parking brake
To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com- plete stop, fully apply the parking brake lever
sufficiently to hold the vehicle.
To apply
1- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal,
then pull the lever up without pushing
the button at the end of hand grip.
CAUT,ONz When you intend to apply the parking brake,
firmly press the brake pedal to bring the ve-hicle to a complete stop before pulling theparking brake lever.
Pulling the parking brake lever with the ve-
hicle moving could make the rear wheels lock up, thereby making the vehicle unsta-
ble. It could also make the parking brake malfunction.NOTEz Apply sufficient force to the parking brake
lever to hold the vehicle stationary after the foot brake is released.
z If the parking brake does not hold the vehi-
cle stationary after the foot brake is released,
have your vehicle checked immediately.To release
1- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal,
then pull the lever up slightly.
2- Push the button at the end of hand grip.
3- Lower the lever fully.

CAUT,ONzBefore driving, be sure that the parking
brake is fully released and brake warning lamp is off.
If you drive without the parking brake fully
released, the warning display will appear on the information screen in the multi-informa-tion display.
If a vehicle is driven without releasing the
parking brake, the brake will be overheated, resulting in ineffective braking and possible

guish when the parking brake is fully re- leased, the brake system may be behavingabnormal.
Have your vehicle checked immediately.

To park the vehicle, fully engage the parking
brake, and then move the gearshift lever to 1 st
or “R” (Reverse) position for vehicles equip- ped with M/T, or set the selector lever to “P”
(PARK) position for vehicles equipped with
CVT.
Parking on a hill
To prevent the vehicle from rolling, follow these procedures:
Parking on a downhill slope
Turn the front wheels towards the kerb and move the vehicle forward until the kerb sidewheel gently touches the kerb.
On vehicles equipped with M/T, apply the
parking brake and place the gearshift lever into the “R” (Reverse) position.
On vehicles equipped with A/T, CVT, apply
the parking brake and place the selector lever into the “P” (PARK) position.
If necessary, apply chocks to wheels.
Parking on an uphill slope
Turn the front wheels away from the kerb and
move the vehicle back until the kerb side
wheel gently touches the kerb.
On vehicles equipped with M/T, apply the
parking brake and place the gearshift lever
into the 1 st
position.
On vehicles equipped with CVT, apply the
parking brake and place the selector lever in- to the “P” (PARK) position.
If necessary, apply chocks to wheels.
NOTEz If your vehicle is equipped with CVT, be
sure to apply the parking brake before mov-
ing selector lever to the “P” (PARK) posi- tion. If you move the selector lever to the
“P” (Park) position before applying the park-
ing brake, it may be difficult to disengage
the selector lever from the “P” (Park) posi-
tion when next you drive the vehicle, requir- ing application of a strong force to the selec-
tor lever to move from the “P” (Park) posi- tion.

Parking with the engine run-ning
Never leave the engine running while you
take a short sleep/rest. Also, never leave the engine running in a closed or poorly ventila-
ted place.
:ARN,NGz Leaving the engine running risks injury
or death from accidentally moving the
gearshift lever ( M/T) or the selector lever
(CVT) or the accumulation of toxic ex- haust fumes on the passenger compart-ment.
Where you park
:ARN,NGz Do not park your vehicle in areas where
combustible materials such as dry grass
or leaves can come in contact with a hot exhaust, since a fire could occur.
Do not keep the steering wheel
fully turned for a long time
More effort could be required to turn the
steering wheel.
Refer to “Electric power steering system (EPS)” on page 6-38.
When leaving the vehicle
Always carry the key and lock all doors and
the tailgate when leaving the vehicle unatten- ded.
Always try to park your vehicle in a well lit
area.

1. Release the lever while holding the
steering wheel up.
2. Adjust the steering wheel to the desired
position.
3. Securely lock the steering wheel by pull-
ing the lever fully upward.

:ARN,NGz Do not attempt to adjust the steering
wheel while you are driving the vehicle.Inside rear-view mirror
Adjust the rear-view mirror only after making
any seat adjustments so you have a clear
view to the rear of the vehicle.
:ARN,NGz Do not attempt to adjust the rear-view
mirror while driving. This can be danger-
ous.
Always adjust the mirror before driving.

Adjust the rear-view mirror to maximize theview through the rear window.
To adjust the vertical mirror position
It is possible to move the mirror up and down to adjust its position.
To adjust the mirror position
It is possible to move the mirror up/down and left/right to adjust its position.
To reduce the glare
Type 1
The lever (A) at the bottom of the mirror can be used to adjust the mirror to reduce the
glare from the headlamps of vehicles behind you during night driving.

Type 2
When the headlamps of the vehicles behindyou are very bright, the reflection factor ofthe rear-view mirror is automatically changed
to reduce the glare.
When the ignition switch is turned to the
“ON” position or the operation mode is put in
ON, the reflection factor of the mirror is au- tomatically changed.
NOTEz Do not hang items on, or spray glass cleaner
on the sensor (1), as reduced sensitivitycould result.Outside rear-view mirrorsTo adjust the mirror position
The outside rear-view mirrors can be operat-
ed when the ignition switch or the operation
mode is in ON or ACC.
:ARN,NGz Do not attempt to adjust the rear-view
mirrors while driving. This can be dan-
gerous.
Always adjust the mirrors before driving.
z Your vehicle is equipped with convex type
mirrors.
Please take into consideration, that ob- jects you see in the mirror will look small- er and farther away compared to a nor-
mal flat mirror.
Do not use this mirror to estimate dis- tance of following vehicles when changing lanes.1. Place the lever (A) to the same side as

Retracting and extending theoutside mirrors
The outside mirror can be folded in towards the side window to prevent damage when
parking in narrow areas.
CAUT,ONz Do not drive the vehicle with the mirror fol-
ded in.
The lack of rearward visibility normally pro-
vided by the mirror could lead to an acci- dent.

Push the mirror towards the back of the vehi- cle with your hand to retract it in. When ex-
tending the mirror, pull it out towards the front of the vehicle until it clicks to lock in
place.
>For vehicles equipped with the mirror re-
tractor switch@
Retracting and extending the
mirrors using the mirror retrac- tor switch
With the ignition switch or the operation mode in ON or ACC, push the mirror retrac-
tor switch to retract the mirrors.
Push it again to extend the mirrors to their
original positions.
After turning the ignition switch to the
“LOCK” position or putting the operation
mode in OFF, it is possible to retract and ex- tend the mirrors using the mirror retractor
switch for about 30 seconds.
CAUT,ONz It is possible to retract and extend the mir-
rors by hand. After retracting a mirror using
the mirror retractor switch, however, you
should extend it by using the switch again, not by hand. If you extended the mirror by
hand after retracting it using the switch, it
would not properly lock in position. As a re- sult, the mirror could move because of thewind or vibration while you are driving, and
this may limit the driver
