While depressing the brake pedal,
move the selector lever through
the gate.Move the selector lever through
the gate.:ARN,NGz Always depress the brake pedal when
shifting the selector lever into the otherposition from the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
Never put your foot on the accelerator
pedal while shifting the selector lever from the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEU-
TRAL) position.NOTEz To avoid erroneous operation, move the se-
lector lever firmly into each position and
briefly hold it there. Always check the posi- tion shown by the selector lever position dis-
play after moving the selector lever.
z If the brake pedal is not depressed and held,
the shift-lock device activates to prevent the selector lever from being moved from the “P” (PARK) position.When the selector lever cannot
be shifted from the “P” (Park)position
When the selector lever cannot be shifted from the “P” (PARK) position to another po-
sition while the brake pedal is pressed and
held down with the ignition switch or the op- eration mode in ON, the battery may be flator the shift-lock mechanism may be malfunc-
tioning. Immediately have your vehicle checked by a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Au-
thorized Service Point.

If you need to move the vehicle, shift the se- lector lever as follows.
For LHD vehicles
1. Make sure the parking brake is applied. 2. Stop the engine if it is running.

3.Insert a straight blade (or minus) screw-
driver with a cloth over its tip into notch (A) of the cover. Pry gently as shown to
remove the cover.
4. Depress the brake pedal with the right
foot.
5. Insert a straight blade (or minus) screw-
driver in the shiftlock release hole (B).Shift the selector lever to the “N” (NEU-
TRAL) position while pressing the straight blade (or minus) screwdriver
down.
For RHD vehicles
1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
2. Stop the engine if it is running.
3. Depress the brake pedal with the right
foot.
4. Insert a straight blade (or minus) screw-
driver in the shift-lock release hole (A).
Shift the selector lever to the “N” (NEU-
TRAL) position while pressing the straight blade (or minus) screwdriver
down.

Selector lever position display
When the ignition switch is turned to the
“ON” position or the operation mode is put in
ON, the position of the selector lever is indi- cated in the multi-information display.
When the selector lever positiondisplay blinks
:ARN,NGz To avoid unintended vehicle movement,
keep the brake pedal applied with your
right foot and do not depress the accelera- tor pedal, while the selector lever position
display is blinking.If the ambient temperature is low, the selector
lever position display on the multi-informa- tion display may blink when the selector lev-er is placed in the “D” (DRIVE), “Ds”
(DOWNSHIFT & SPORTY DRIVING), “L”
(LOW), “M” (MANUAL) or “R” (RE-
VERSE) position immediately after the en- gine has been started. This indicates that the
transmission requires warming up.
While the display is blinking, the vehicle will
not move, because the transmission keeps disengaging until the warm up is completedeven if the selector lever is placed in the “D”,
“Ds”, “L”, “M” or “R” position.
When the selector lever position display is blinking, perform the following procedure: 1. Depress the brake pedal with your right
foot and place the selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position for several
seconds.
2. Keep depressing the brake pedal and
then place the selector lever in the “D”
(DRIVE), “Ds” (DOWNSHIFT & SPORTY DRIVING), “L” (LOW), “M” (MANUAL) or “R” (REVERSE) posi-
tion. If the selector lever position display stops blinking, the warm-up is comple-
ted and the transmission will function
normally.
3. If the display is still blinking, repeat
steps 1 and 2 above.NOTEz While the selector lever position display is
blinking, a buzzer will sound intermittently.Selector lever positions
“P” PARK
This position locks the transmission to pre-
vent the vehicle from moving. The engine
can be started in this position.
“R” REVERSE
This position is to back up.
CAUT,ONz Never shift into the “P” (PARK) or “R” (RE-
VERSE) position while the vehicle is in mo- tion to avoid transmission damage.
“N” NEUTRAL
At this position the transmission is disengag-
ed. It is the same as the neutral position on amanual transmission, and should only be used when the vehicle is stationary for an ex-
tended length of time during driving, such as
in a traffic jam.

:ARN,NGzNever move the selector lever to the “N”
(Neutral) position while driving. A seriousaccident could occur since you could acci-dentally move the lever into the “P”(Park) or “R” (Reverse) position or you
will lose engine braking.
z On a gradient the engine should be star-
ted in the “P” (Park) position, not in the
“N” (Neutral) position.
z To prevent rolling, always keep your foot
on the brake pedal when the vehicle is in
“N” (Neutral) position, or when shifting into or out of “N” (Neutral) position.
“D” DRIVE
This position is used for most city and high-
way driving. The transmission will automati- cally and continuously change its gear ratio
depending on road and driving conditions.
CAUT,ONz To prevent transmission damage, never shift
into the “D” (Drive) position from the “R” (Reverse) position while the vehicle is in motion.
“Ds” DOWNSHIFT SPOR-
TY DRIVING*
Except for vehicles equipped with shift pad-
dles, use when engine braking is needed, or for high-power sport drive.
“L” LOW*
Except for vehicles equipped with shift pad-
dles and vehicles equipped with shift paddles
(type 1), this position is for driving up very
steep hills and for engine braking at low speeds when driving down steep hills.
:ARN,NGz This position can be used for maximum
engine braking.
Be very careful not to shift into “L” (Low)
suddenly.
Sudden engine braking may cause the tyres to skid.
Select this position according to the road conditions and vehicle speed.
“M” MANUAL*
Vehicles equipped with shift paddles (type 2),
use this position when selecting the sportsmode.
Sports mode (for vehicles
equipped with shift paddles)
Sports mode can be selected as follows: z While the vehicle is stopped or being
driven with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position, pull one of the shiftpaddles towards you.
z Move the selector lever to the “M”
(MANUAL) position.
In sports mode, rapid shifting is possible sim-
ply by operating the shift paddle.
Unlike the manual transmission, sports mode
allows shifting with the accelerator pedal de- pressed.- (SHIFT DOWN)+ (SHIFT UP)
+ (SHIFT UP)
The transmission shifts up once by each oper-
ation.
- (SHIFT DOWN)
The transmission shifts down once by each
operation.
To return to “D” (DRIVE) operation when
the selector lever is in the “D” (DRIVE) posi-
tion, pull the shift paddle on the + (SHIFT UP) side for longer than 2 seconds.

To return to “D” (DRIVE) operation when
the selector lever is in the “M” (MANUAL) position, move the selector lever to the “D” (DRIVE) position.
When returning to “D” (Drive) operation, the
selector lever position display will change to “D” (Drive) position.CAUT,ONz In sports mode, the driver must execute up-
ward shifts in accordance with prevailing road conditions, taking care to keep the en- gine speed below the red zone.
z Repeated continuous operation of the shift
paddles will continuously switch shift posi-
tion.
z Do not use the left- and right-hand shift pad-
dles at the same time. Doing so could cause a shift of gear ratio that you do not expect.NOTEz The upward shift may be made automatical-
ly in sports mode when the engine revolu-
tions rises and approaches the tachometer

Sports mode display
In sports mode, the currently selected posi-
tion is displayed on the multi-information display.
NOTEz If the currently selected position is blinking
on the multi-information display when theselector lever is in the “M” (MANUAL) po-sition, the shift paddles may be malfunction-
ing.
In this case, move the selector lever to the
“D” (DRIVE) position to continue driving. Have the vehicle inspected by aMITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Serv-
ice Point as soon as possible.When a malfunction occurs in
the CVTor
When the warning display ap-
pears
There could be a system malfunction if the
warning display or the warning display is
displayed on the information screen in the
multi-information display.
CAUT,ONz If malfunction occurs in the CVT while driv-
ing, the warning display or the warning
display will appear on the information screen in the multi-information display.
In this case, follow these procedures:

warning display is showing@
The CVT fluid is overheating. The engine control may activate to lower the CVT fluid
temperature, causing the engine revolutions
and vehicle speed to decrease. In this case, take one of the following measures.

CAUT,ONvice to activate. We recommend that youhave your vehicle inspected immediately.Operation of the CVTCAUT,ONz Before selecting a position with the engine
running and the vehicle stationary, fully de-
press the brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from creeping.
The vehicle will begin to move as soon as the CVT is engaged, especially when the en-
gine speed is high, at fast idle or with the air conditioning operating, the brakes should
only be released when you are ready to drive
away.
z Depress the brake pedal with the right foot at
all times.
Using the left foot could cause driver move- ment delay in case of an emergency.
z To prevent sudden acceleration, never race
the engine when shifting from the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
z Operating the accelerator pedal while the
other foot is resting on the brake pedal will affect braking efficiency and may cause pre-
mature wear of brake pads.CAUT,ONz Use the selector lever in the correct shift po-
sition in accordance with driving conditions.
Never coast downhill backward with the se-
lector lever in the “D” (DRIVE), “Ds” (DOWNSHIFT & SPORTY DRIVING),
“L” (LOW) position or “M” (MANUAL) position or coast forward with the selector
lever in the “R” (REVERSE) position.
The engine may stop and the unexpected in- crease in brake pedal effort and steering
wheel weight could lead to an accident.
z Do not race the engine with brake pedal
pressed when the vehicle is stationary.
This can damage the CVT.
Also, when you depress the accelerator ped- al while holding down the brake pedal withthe selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) posi-
tion, the engine revolutions may not rise as high as when performing the same operation
with the selector lever in the “N” (NEU-
TRAL) position.Passing acceleration
To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE)
position, push the accelerator to the floor.
The CVT will automatically downshift.
NOTEz In “Sports mode”, downshifts do not take
place when the accelerator is depressed all
the way to the floor.Uphill/downhill driving
DRIVING UPHILL
The transmission prevents unnecessary up-
shifts even when the accelerator pedal is re- leased and ensures smooth driving.
DRIVING DOWNHILL
According to the conditions, the transmission
will automatically shift to a lower gear ratio to achieve stronger engine braking. This may
help reduce your need to use the service
brake.
Waiting
For short waiting periods, such as at traffic signals the vehicle can be left in selector lev-er position and held stationary with the serv-
ice brake.
For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place the selector lever in the “N”
(NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake.
CAUT,ONz Never hold the vehicle stationary while in
CVT on a hill with the accelerator, always
apply the parking brake and/or service
brake.

Parking
To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com-
plete stop, fully engage the parking brake, and then move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position.
If you are going to leave the vehicle unatten-
ded, always switch off the engine and carry the key.
NOTEz On a slope, be sure to apply the parking
brake before moving the selector lever to the
“P” (PARK) position. If you move the selec-
tor lever to the “P” (PARK) position before applying the parking brake, it may be diffi- cult to disengage the selector lever from the
“P” (PARK) position when next you drive
the vehicle, requiring application of a strong
force to the selector lever to move from the “P” (PARK) position.When the CVT makes no speed
change
If the transmission does not change speeds
while driving, or your vehicle does not pick
up enough speed when starting on an uphill slope, it may be that there is something un-usual happening in the transmission, causing a safety device to activate. We recommend
that you have your vehicle inspected immedi- ately.
Electronically controlled
4WD system*
The electronically controlled 4WD system is
a 4-wheel drive system that allows one of
three drive modes to be selected with aswitch, in accordance with the driving condi-tions.

The following drive modes are available.Drive modeFunction

This mode is for econom-
ical driving on normal dry
roads and motorway.
Driving in front-wheel

4WD AUTO
The default mode.
This mode is for automat-
ically controlling the dis-
tribution of driving torque
to all four wheels accord-
ing to the driving condi-

This mode is for driving
in slippery conditions
such as on snow-covered
roads or sand.
The large amount of driv-
ing torque that is applied
to the rear tyres enables
getting out of slippery
areas and powerful driv-
ing is possible across all
ranges.
4-wheel drive operation requires special driv- ing skills.
Carefully read the “4-wheel drive operation”
on page 6-32 and take care to drive safely.
NOTEz The drive mode becomes “4WD AUTO”
when you turn on the ignition switch or the
operation mode.
For some models, the state of the drive mode is maintained even if you turn off the igni- tion switch or the operation mode.

Drive mode-selector
The drive mode can be changed by pressing
the drive mode-selector while the ignition switch or the operation mode is in ON.
By pressing the drive mode-selector, the
drive mode can be changed in order of “2WD”, “4WD AUTO” and “4WD LOCK”.
The drive mode is displayed as an interrupt
display on the information screen in the mul- ti-information display when the drive mode ischanged.
After a few seconds, the information screen
will then return to its prior display.

the front wheels spinning on a snowy road or
in similar conditions. The vehicle could
lunge in an unexpected direction.
z Driving on dry, paved roads in “4WD
LOCK” mode causes increased fuel con-
sumption, noise and vibration.
z Do not drive with the tyres spinning in
“2WD” mode.
Doing so could generate heat in the drive-
system components.NOTEz Even if a drive mode other than “4WD AU-
TO” was selected before turning the ignition
switch to the “LOCK” position or putting the operation mode in OFF, the drive mode
will be set to “4WD AUTO” when the igni-
tion switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON again.
However, for some models, the state of the
drive mode is maintained even if you turn off the ignition switch or the operationmode.NOTEz The drive mode can be switched while driv-
ing or stopped.
Drive mode indicator
Normally the indicator illuminates when the
ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position
or the operation mode is put in ON, and then
the drive mode is displayed a few seconds af- ter the engine is started.

CAUT,ONzIf the selected drive mode indicator is blink-
ing, the vehicle switches automatically to front-wheel drive in order to protect thedrive-system components, and drive mode
selection is no longer possible with the drive mode-selector.
The warning display is also displayed in the
information screen in the multi-information display.
Reduce speed, and if the indicator goes out after driving a while, resume driving as be-fore.
z If the warning display on the information
screen in the multi-information display, a
problem has occurred with the electronically
controlled 4WD system and the safety de-
vice has activated. Have your vehicle in-
spected immediately by a MITSUBISHI
MOTORS Authorized Service Point.
CAUT,ONz Always use tyres of the same size, same
type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences. Using tyres that differ in
size, type, brand, or wear amount may acti-
vate the protection of the drive-system com- ponents, causing the drive mode in “4WD
AUTO” mode to lock or the “4WD” and “LOCK” indicators to blink alternately.4-wheel drive operation
Your vehicle has been designed primarily for
use on paved roads.
But its unique 4-wheel drive system allows you to occasionally travel on unpaved roads,
to campgrounds, picnic sites, and similar lo-
cations.
Not only does this ensure better handling on dry, paved roads but also permits better trac-
tion when driving on slippery, wet or snow- covered roads and when moving out of mud.
But it is not suitable for heavy off road use or
towing in rough conditions.
It is particularly important to note that 4-
wheel drive may not give sufficient hill climbing ability and engine braking on steep
slopes. You should try to avoid driving on steep slopes.
Also, you must exercise caution when driving
on sand and mud and when driving through
water because sufficient traction may not be available in certain circumstances.
Please avoid driving the vehicle through
areas where the tyres may get stuck in deep
sand or mud.:ARN,NGz Do not over-rely on the 4-wheel drive ve-
hicles. Even 4-wheel drive vehicles have
limits to the system and ability to main- tain control and traction. Reckless driving may lead to accidents. Always drive care-
fully, taking account of the road condi- tions.
z Improperly operating this vehicle on or
off-paved roads can cause an accident or rollover in which you and your passengers
could be seriously injured or killed.
