Reading lights (ECLIPSE SPYDER only, if so
equipped)

Push the reading light switch to turn on the light. This light
produces a spot beam for convenient use as a map light.
Push the reading light switch again to turn the light off.(ON) - The reading light comes on.
(DOOR) - The reading light comes on when any door is opened.
When all the doors are closed, the reading light is
dimmed gradually for 30 seconds then goes out. How-
ever, the light goes out immediately without being
dimmed if:

The ignition switch is turned to the “ON” posi-
tion.

All the doors are locked using the power door
lock switch, or the remote control switch of the
keyless entry system.
NOTE
If the ignition key is removed with the doors
closed, the reading light comes on for 30 seconds
and then goes out.

Dome light (Rear) (ECLIPSE only)

The dome light can be turned on by sliding the dome light
switch.
Cargo area light (ECLIPSE only)

The cargo area light comes on when the rear hatch is opened.
When the rear hatch is closed, the cargo area light goes off.
1 ( ) -
The dome light comes on.
2 ( ) -The dome light comes on when any door or rear hatch is
opened. When all the doors (including the rear hatch)
are closed, the dome light is dimmed gradually for 30
seconds then goes out. However, the light goes out
immediately without being dimmed if:

The ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position.

Interior light auto-cutout function (dome light
and other lights)

If any of the interior lights are left on with the ignition switch
in the “LOCK” position, the lights go out automatically after
about 30 minutes.
The lights come on again if the ignition switch is turned to the
“ON” or “ACC” position, any door or the rear hatch
(ECLIPSE) is opened and closed, or the keyless entry system is
operated.

Floor console box

To open the console box, lift the lever (A) and raise the arm
rest (B).NOTE
The Auxiliary Audio connector (mini-jack) is located in
the floor console box. For details, refer to “To use the
external audio input function” on page 5-63.
WA R N I N G
!
An open glove compartment door can cause a seri-
ous injury or death to the front passenger in an acci-
dent, even if the passenger is wearing his/her seat
belt. Always keep the glove compartment door
closed when driving.

When closing the rear hatch, make sure no luggage
touches the rear shelf panel. If you close the rear hatch
with the rear shelf panel pressing against luggage, the rear
shelf panel could break.
Remove the rear shelf panel when loading large items of lug-

4 Vehicle preparation before driving

For a safer and more enjoyable trip, always observe the follow-
ing: Seat belts and seats
Before starting the vehicle, make certain that you and all
passengers are seated and wearing their seat belts properly
(with children in the rear seat, in appropriate restraints),
and that all the doors and the rear hatch are locked.

Move the driver’s seat as far backward as possible, while
still keeping good visibility, and good control of the steer-
ing wheel, brakes, accelerator, and controls. Check the
instrument panel indicators for any possible problem.

Move the front passenger seat as far back as possible.

Make sure that infants and small children are properly
restrained in accordance with all laws and regulations.Floor matAlways properly position floor mat and assure it does not inter-
fere with operation of the pedals.
Always use retaining clip on the driver’s floorboard to secure
the Mitsubishi genuine floor mat. When used, this clip will
help prevent the floor mat from moving forward and possibly
interfering with the operation of the pedals.
To prevent the floor mat from moving forward and possibly
interfering with the operation of the pedals, Mitsubishi genuine
floor mats are recommended.
WA R N I N G
!
Always properly position floor mat and assure it
does not interfere with operation of the pedals.
Always use retaining clip on the driver’s floorboard
to secure the Mitsubishi genuine floor mat.
Always install the mat with the correct side facing
down.
Never install a second mat over an existing floor
mat.

Parking with the engine runningNever leave the engine running while you take a short
sleep/rest. Also, never leave the engine running in a closed or
poorly ventilated place.Where you parkYour front bumper can be damaged if you scrape it over curbs
or parking stop blocks. Be careful when traveling up or down
steep slopes where your bumper can scrape the road.When leaving the vehicleAlways remove the key from the ignition switch and lock all

Always try to park your vehicle in a well lit area.
Loading information

It is very important to know how much weight your vehicle can
carry. This weight is called the vehicle capacity weight and
includes the weight of all occupants, cargo and non-factory-
installed options. The tire and loading information placard
located on the driver’s door sill of your vehicle will show how
much weight it may properly carry.
It is important to familiarize yourself with the following terms
before loading your vehicle:

Vehicle maximum load on the tire: load on an individual
tire that is determined by distributing to each axle its share
of the maximum loaded vehicle weight and dividing by
two.

Vehicle normal load on the tire: load on an individual tire
that is determined by distributing to each axle its share of
the curb weight, accessory weight, and normal occupant
weight and dividing by two.

Maximum loaded vehicle weight: the sum of -
(a) Curb weight;
(b) Accessory weight;
(c) Vehicle capacity weight; and
(d) Production options weight.

Leaving the engine running risks injury or death
from accidentally moving the gearshift lever (man-
ual transaxle) or the selector lever (automatic tran-
saxle) or the accumulation of toxic exhaust fumes in
the passenger compartment.

Do not park your vehicle in areas where combustible
materials such as dry grass or leaves can come in
contact with a hot exhaust, since a fire could occur.

Cargo load precautionsTo determine the cargo load capacity for your vehicle, subtract
the weight of all vehicle occupants from the vehicle capacity
weight. For added information, if needed, refer to “Step for
Determining Correct Load Limit” on page 4-10.
DO NOT USE the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and Gross
Axle Weight Rating numbers listed on the safety certification
label (A) located on the driver’s side door pillar as the guide for
passengers and/or cargo weight.
WA R N I N G
!
To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, the
combined weights of the driver, passengers and
cargo and must never exceed the vehicle capacity
weight.
Exceeding the vehicle capacity weight will adversely
affect vehicle performance, including handling and
braking, and may cause an accident.
Do not load cargo or luggage higher than the top of
the seatback. Be sure that your cargo or luggage
cannot move when your vehicle is in motion.
Having either the rear view blocked, or your cargo
being thrown inside the cabin if you suddenly have
to brake can cause a serious accident or injury or
death.
Put cargo or luggage in the cargo area of your vehi-
cle. Try to spread the weight evenly.

Blower speed selection dial

When the ignition key is in the ON position, select the blower
speed by turning the blower speed selection dial. The blower
speed will gradually increase as the dial is turned to the right.
When the blower speed selection dial is set to the “OFF” posi-
tion, all fan-driven airflow will stop.
Temperature control dial

Turn the temperature control dial clockwise to make the air
warmer. Turn it counterclockwise to make the air cooler. NOTE
While the engine coolant temperature is low, the tempera-
ture of the air from the heater will be cool/cold until the
engine warms up, even if you have selected warm air with
the dial.

For instructions on how to use the “MAX A/C” position
(A), see “Cooling” on page 5-10.

NOTE
If a problem is detected in the air conditioning compres-
sor, the air conditioning indicator light (A) blinks. Press
the air conditioning switch once to turn it off, then once
more to turn it back on. If the air conditioning indicator
light (A) does not blink, there is no problem. If it does
blink, have it checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors
dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

Sometimes, for example after using a high-pressure car
wash, the condenser can get wet, and the air conditioning
indicator light (A) blinks temporarily. In this case there is
nothing wrong. Wait for a while, press the air conditioning
switch once to turn the system off, then once more to turn
it back on. Once the water evaporates, the blinking will
stop.
Operating the air conditioning system

Heating Set the mode selection dial to the “ ” position and set the air
selection switch (A) to the outside position.
Turn the temperature control dial clockwise or counterclock-
wise to the desired temperature. Select the desired blower
speed.
