Tire pressure monitoring system
Features and controls 5-33
5
The tire pressure monitoring system may not work normally in the following circum- stances: A wireless facility or device using the same frequency is near the vehicle. Snow or ice is stuck inside the fenders and/or on the wheels. The tire inflation pre
ssure sensors’ battery
is exhausted. Wheels other than Mitsubishi Motors gen- uine wheels are being used. Wheels that are not fitted with tire infla- tion pressure sensors are being used. Wheels whose ID codes are not memo- rized by the vehicle are used. A window tint that affects the radio wave signals is installed.
N00532900182
If you use new wheels with new tire inflationpressure sensors, their ID codes must be pro- grammed into the tire pressure monitoring system. Have tire and
wheel replacement per-
formed by a certified i-MiEV dealer to avoid the risk of damaging the tire inflation pres- sure sensors.
N00533000207
Your tire pressure monitoring system oper- ates on a radio frequenc
y subject to Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) Rules(For vehicles sold in
 U.S.A.) and Industry
Canada Rules (For vehicles sold in Canada). This device complies wi
th Part 15 of the FCC
Rules and RSS- Gen of the Industry Canada Rules. Operation is subject to the following two con- ditions. This device may not
cause harmful inter-
ference. This device must ac
cept any interference
received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
Do not use an aerosol puncture-repair spray on any tire. Such a spray could damage thetire inflation pressure sensors. Using the tire repair kit may damage the tire inflation pressure sensor. The vehicle mustpromptly be inspected and repaired by a cer- tified i-MiEV dealer after using the tire repair kit.NOTE
NOTE
Tire inflation pressures vary with the ambi- ent temperature. If the vehicle is subjected tolarge variations in ambient temperature, thetire inflation pressures may be under-inflated (causing the warning light to come on) when the ambient temperature is relatively low. Ifthe warning light comes on, adjust the tire inflation pressure.
Whenever the tires and wheels are replaced with new ones
CAUTION The use of non-genuine wheels will prevent the proper fit of the tire inflation pressure sensors, resulting air
leakage or damage of
the sensors.
General information
CAUTION Changes or modifica
tions not expressly
approved by the manufacturer for compli- ance could void the user
’s authority to oper-
ate the equipment.

Move the driver’s seat as far backward as possible, while still
keeping good visibil-
ity, and good control of the steering wheel, brakes, accele
rator, and controls.
Check the instrument panel indicators forany possible problem. Move the front passe
nger seat as far back
as possible. Make sure that infa
nts and small children
are properly restrained in accordance with all laws and regulations.
Check these by selecti
ng the defroster mode,
and set the blower swit
ch on high. You should
be able to feel the air blowing against the windshield. (Refer to “Defrosting or defogging the wind- shield and door windows” on page 7-9.) Check all the tires for heavy tread wear or uneven wear patterns.
Look for stones, nails,
glass, or other objects
stuck in the tread. Look
for any tread cuts or sidewall cracks. Check the wheel nuts for tightness, and the tires for proper pressures. Replace your tires beforethey are heavily worn out.
As your vehicle is equi
pped with a tire pres-
sure monitoring system, there is a risk ofdamage to the tire inflation pressure sensors when the tire is replaced on the rim. Tire replacement should, th
erefore, be performed
only by a certified i-MiEV dealer. Have someone watch while you turn all the exterior lights on and off. Also check the turn signal indicators and
high-beam indicators on
the instrument panel. Check the ground under the vehicle after parking overnight, for wa
ter, oil, or other
leaks. Make sure all the fluid levels are cor- rect.
N00629200124
Even this vehicle’s safety equipment, andyour safest driving, cannot guarantee that youcan avoid an accident or injury. However, if you give extra attention to the following areas, you can better protect yourself andyour passengers:
Drive defensively. Be aware of traffic, road and weather conditions. Leave plentyof stopping distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead. Before changing lanes, check your mir- rors and use your turn signal light. While driving, watch the behavior of other drivers, bicyc
lists, and pedestrians.
 Always obey applicable
 laws and regula-
tions. Be a polite and alert driver. Always leave room for unexpected events, such as sudden braking.

Tire repair kit
For emergencies 8-5
8
If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge, after the electric motor unit has beenstarted by using jumper
cables, it can cause
the anti-lock braking sy
stem warning light to
illuminate. This is only due to the low batteryvoltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this happens, fully charge the 12V starter battery and ensure the charging system is operating properly.

N00939700170
The following maintenance steps are recom- mended: Check tire pressures regularly. Have regular maintenance done on the wheel balance and front
 and rear suspen-
sion alignment.
N00939800214
Tread wear indicators are built into the origi-nal equipment tires on your vehicle to helpyou know when your tires should be replaced. Many states have la
ws requiring that you
replace your tires at this point. These indicators are molded into the bottom of the tread grooves and will appear when the tire tread is worn down to 1/16 inch(1.6 mm). When the bands appear next to one another in two or more places,
replace your tires.
N00939900518
Because the front and
rear tires and wheels
are not the same size, do not rotate the front and rear tires.
N00940000359
In some areas of the country, snow tires arerequired for winter driving. If snow tires arerequired in your area, you must choose snow tires of the same size
and type as the original
tires provided with your
vehicle. Snow tires
should also be
installed on all four wheels.
Otherwise your safety
and vehicle handling
can be reduced.Even where laws may permit it, snow tires should not be operated
 at sustained speeds
over 75 mph (120 km/h).
Only Mitsubishi Motors genuine wheels should be used, beca
use your vehicle is
equipped with a tire pr
essure monitoring sys-
tem. Use of another type of wheel risks air leaks and sensor damage, as it
 will not be possible
to install the tire pressure sensor properly.

NOTE
 Tire wear indicators ca
n have different marks
and locations depending on the tire manufac- turer.
Tire rotation
WA R N I N G Rotating tires would compromise the sta- bility and drivabilit
y of the vehicle and
could lead to a
serious accident.
