Test No. 1
1) Loosen throttle cable. Turn ignition on for more than 15
seconds. DO NOT start engine. Turn ignition off. This should fully
retract ISC motor plunger.
2) On 2.0L Galant (VIN V), connect jumper wire between
ignition timing adjustment connector and ground. See IGNITION TIMING
ADJUSTMENT CONNECTOR LOCATION table under IGNITION TIMING.
3) On all models, disconnect harness connector(s) from Idle
Speed Control (ISC) motor. Ensure ISC plunger is in fully retracted
position. Unscrew fixed Speed Adjusting Screw (SAS) until throttle
valve is fully closed. See Fig. 1.
CAUTION: When cleaning throttle body, plug air by-pass hole in
throttle body to prevent solvent from entering passage.
4) Start engine. Check basic idle speed. See IDLE SPEED
SPECIFICATIONS table. If basic idle speed is within specification, go
to step 7). If basic idle speed is not within specification, remove
air intake hose and clean throttle body. Reconnect air intake hose.
Recheck basic idle speed.
5) If basic idle speed is still not within specification
after cleaning throttle body, adjust basic idle speed by turning idle
speed adjusting screw. See Fig. 1. After adjusting basic idle speed,
turn fixed SAS screw clockwise until engine speed begins to increase.
6) Turn fixed SAS screw counterclockwise until engine speed
decreases. Turn fixed SAS screw counterclockwise an additional 1/2
turn from point at which engine speed no longer decreases. Turn off
engine.
7) Adjust throttle cable. Reconnect harness connector(s) at
ISC motor. Start engine. Operate engine for about 5 minutes. Ensure
engine idles within curb idle speed specification. See IDLE SPEED
SPECIFICATIONS table.
8) Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable for
at least 10 seconds to clear diagnostic trouble code. Reconnect
negative battery cable. Operate engine at idle for about 5 minutes to
ensure engine idles smoothly.
Test No. 2
1) Locate ignition timing adjustment connector. See IGNITION
TIMING ADJUSTMENT CONNECTOR LOCATION table under IGNITION TIMING.
Connect jumper wire between ignition timing adjustment connector and
ground.
2) Locate diagnostic connector under instrument panel.
Connect jumper wire between diagnostic connector terminal No. 10
(White wire) and ground. See Fig. 3. Start engine. Check basic idle
speed. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table. If basic idle speed is
within specification, go to step 9). If basic idle speed is not within
specification, go to step 3).
3) Remove air intake hose. Check throttle body. If throttle
body contains deposits, go to next step. If throttle body is clean,
disconnect jumper wires connected in steps 1) and 2). On all models
except Eclipse, Galant and Mirage, go to step 6). On Eclipse, Galant
and Mirage, go to step 5).
CAUTION: When cleaning throttle body, plug air by-pass hole in

Exhaust System Backpressure
Exhaust system can be checked with a vacuum or pressure
gauge. Remove O2 sensor or air injection check valve (if equipped).
Connect a 1-10 psi pressure gauge and run engine at 2500 RPM. If
exhaust system backpressure is greater than 1 3/4-2 psi, exhaust
system or catalytic converter is plugged. If a vacuum gauge is used,
connect vacuum gauge hose to intake manifold vacuum port and start
engine. Observe vacuum gauge. Open throttle part way and hold steady.
If vacuum gauge reading slowly drops after stabilizing, exhaust system
should be checked for a restriction.
FUEL PRESSURE
Basic diagnosis of fuel system should begin with determining
fuel system pressure.
FUEL INJECTED ENGINES
WARNING: ALWAYS relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel
injection-related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact
engine or electrical components.
Fuel Pressure
1) On all models except Colt and Mirage, disconnect fuel pump
harness connector at fuel tank. On Colt and Mirage, remove rear seat
cushion to disconnect fuel pump harness connector.
2) On all models, start engine. Let engine run until it
stops. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
Connect fuel pump harness connector.
WARNING: Before disconnecting high pressure fuel hose at fuel delivery
pipe, cover fuel hose connection with a rag. Some residual
fuel pressure may still be in system.
3) On Galant 2.0L (DOHC), remove brace for access to high
pressure fuel delivery pipe. On all engines, disconnect high pressure
fuel hose at fuel delivery pipe.
4) Connect fuel pressure gauge with adapter between fuel
delivery pipe and high pressure hose. See Fig. 1. Connect negative
battery terminal. Connect battery voltage to fuel pump test terminal.
See FUEL PUMP TEST TERMINAL LOCATION table. Ensure no fuel leaks are
present. Disconnect battery voltage to fuel pump test terminal.

pump. If fuel pressure drops slowly, fuel injector is leaking or fuel
pressure regulator valve seat is leaking. Check for faulty fuel
injector or fuel pressure regulator. Repair as required.
11) When fuel pressure test is complete, repeat fuel pressure
release procedure in steps 1) and 2) before disconnecting fuel
pressure gauge. Install new "O" ring at end of high pressure hose.
Check for fuel leaks.

Control Relay
Multipurpose relay switches power to vehicle sensors and
actuators including airflow sensor, crank angle sensor, idle speed
control, injectors and fuel pump. When ignition switch is turned to ON
position, ECU energizes coils controlling injectors, airflow sensor
and idle speed control. When ignition switch is turned to START
position, ECU energizes coils (through inhibitor switch on A/T models)\
to supply power to fuel pump. Relay failure will cause a no-start
condition. For testing procedure, see SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING
article.
IGNITION CHECKS
SPARK
Check for spark at coil wire (if applicable) and at each
spark plug wire using a high output spark tester. Check spark plug
wire resistance on suspect wires. For wire resistance specification,
see C - SPECIFICATIONS article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
CRANK ANGLE SENSOR
For crank angle sensor testing procedure on all models except
Ram-50, Stealth, Eclipse, Laser, Pickup and 3000GT, see TEST NS-5:

Colt, Colt 200, Mirage & Summit
Remove defogger timer from junction block under left side of
instrument panel. Connect a battery and test light to defogger timer
terminals. See Fig. 3. Apply battery voltage to terminal No. 7 for 5-7
seconds. Ensure test light illuminates for approximately 10 seconds.
Reapply battery voltage to terminal No. 7. Test light should go off
when voltage is applied again.
Colt Vista
With ignition switch in ON position, apply battery voltage to
terminal No. 2 of defogger timer. Timer should operate for
approximately 11 seconds then stop. See Fig. 3.
Eclipse & Galant
Remove defogger timer from interior relay block. Connect
battery voltage and test light to timer. See Fig. 3. Ensure test light
illuminates for approximately 11 seconds when battery voltage is
applied to terminal No. 4. Reapply battery voltage to terminal No. 4
and observe test light. Test light should go off.

GRID TEST
1) Start engine and operate at 2000 RPM. Ensure battery is
fully charged. Turn defogger switch to ON position. Using a voltmeter,
check voltage at center section of each grid wire. If voltage is
approximately 6 volts, grid wire is okay. If voltage is approximately
12 volts, an open is present in the negative circuit. Move probe
slowly toward the negative terminal to determine location of open
circuit.
2) If voltage is zero volt, an open is present in the
positive circuit. Move probe slowly toward the positive terminal to

WIRING DIAGRAM COMPONENT LOCATIONS
When trying to locate a component in a wiring diagram and you
don't know the specific system where it is located, use this handy
component locator to find the system wiring diagram in which the
component is located. Then, go to that system and locate the component
within the wiring diagram.
For example, if you don't know the specific system in which
the ignition switch is located, look up ignition switch in the wiring
diagram component location tables and go to the appropriate wiring
diagram(s) which contain either full or partial views of the ignition
switch. The full view of the ignition switch is located in Power
Distribution.
The first listing for the component will be the full or most
complete view of the component. Additional listings will be partial
views of the component. Not all components are used on all models.
All components will have a partial view in Ground
Distribution and Power Distribution. Data Link Connectors show
connecting circuits between modules. Alternate names for components
may be listed in wiring diagram component locations tables.

MODEL IDENTIFICATION
VIN LOCATION
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is located on the
left side of the dash panel at the base of the windshield. The VIN
chart explains the code characters.
VIN CODE ID EXPLANATION
Numbers preceding the explanations in the legend below refer
to the sequence of characters as listed on VIN identification label.

remains on (light may flash) during vehicle operation, cause of
malfunction must be determined by using DIAGNOSTIC FAULT CHARTS (if
testing with voltmeter) or diagnostic CODE CHARTS (if testing with
DRB-II). If a sensor fails, ECU will use a substitute value in its
calculations to continue engine operation. In this condition, vehicle
is functional, but loss of good driveability may result.
INTERMITTENT FAILURES
Intermittent failures may cause CHECK ENGINE light to flicker
or illuminate and go out after the intermittent fault goes away.
However, the corresponding trouble code will be retained in ECU
memory. If related fault does not reoccur within a certain time frame,
related trouble code will be erased from ECU memory. Intermittent
failures may be caused by a sensor, connector or wiring related
problems. See INTERMITTENTS in H - TESTS W/O CODES article.
PRETEST INSPECTION
Before proceeding with diagnosis, the following precautions
must be followed:
* Vehicle must have a fully charged battery and functional
charging system.
* Visually inspect connectors and circuit wiring being worked
on.
* DO NOT disconnect battery or ECU. This will erase any fault
codes stored in ECU.
* DO NOT cause short circuits when performing electrical tests.
This will set additional fault codes, making diagnosis of original
problem more difficult.
* DO NOT use a test light in place of a voltmeter.
* When checking for spark, ensure coil wire is NO more than
1/4" from ground. If coil wire is more than 1/4" from ground,
damage to vehicle electronics and/or ECU may result.
* DO NOT prolong testing of fuel injectors. Engine may
hydrostatically (liquid) lock.
* When a vehicle has multiple fault codes, always repair lowest
number fault code first.
* If DRB-II is being used to diagnose system, always perform
verification test after repairs are made.
ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS (USING VOLTMETER)
1) Before entering on-board diagnostics, refer to PRETEST
INSPECTION in this article. Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
Locate self-diagnostic connector. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TEST CONNECTOR
LOCATION table. Using an analog voltmeter, connect voltmeter positive
lead to self-diagnostic connector terminal No. 1 and negative lead to
terminal No. 12 (ground). See Fig. 6.
2) Turn ignition switch to ON position and disclosure of ECU
memory will begin. If 2 or more systems are non-functional, they are
indicated by order of increasing code number. Indication is made by
12-volt pulses of voltmeter pointer. A constant repetition of short
12-volt pulses indicates system is normal. If system is abnormal,
voltmeter will pulse between zero and 12 volts.
3) Signals will appear on voltmeter as long and short 12-volt
pulses. Long pulses represent tens; short pulses represent ones. For
example 4 long pulses and 3 short pulses indicates Code 43. See

Figs. 1 and 2. After recording abnormal code(s), perform necessary
repair.
4) After repair, turn ignition off and disconnect negative
battery cable for 10 seconds to erase ECU memory. Reconnect power
supply and repeat self-diagnostics to confirm repair.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Removal
1) Remove negative battery cable. Remove transfer case skid
plate (if equipped). Scribe alignment marks and remove both drive
shafts. Drain oil from transfer case. Disconnect wiring harness from
back-up light switch, all 4WD switches and any other electrical
connectors (if equipped).
2) Disconnect speedometer cable from drive. Unclip cable from
case. Place transfer case shifter in "2H" position and transmission in
Neutral. Remove 6 bolts holding control lever assembly. Remove control
lever assembly and gasket.
3) Remove select plunger bore plug at right side of case.
Remove select spring and plunger. Remove change shifter spring pin.
Remove change shifter. Remove transfer case mount. Remove 4 bolts and
2 nuts holding transfer case to adapter. Remove transfer case from
vehicle.
