DOOR LOCKS - POWER & KEYLESS ENTRY
1998 Mitsubishi Montero
1998 ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT
Mitsubishi - Keyless Entry & Power Door Locks
Montero & 3000GT
DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
On 3000GT, power door locks are controlled by driver or
passenger switches which send signals to Electronic Timer Alarm
Control System (ETACS) ECU. ETACS-ECU sends appropriate signals to
individual door lock actuators through individual relays.
The following features are incorporated in power door lock
systems that have an ETACS-ECU:
* Once locked door is closed, system will unlock door if key
remains in ignition switch.
* Continuous switching between lock and unlock of door will
disable system for about one minute.
On Montero, power door lock actuator receives signal from
individual control relay that is operated by a switch incorporated in
actuator. On all models, all door locks are actuated with operation of
one lock.
Montero and 3000GT offer optional keyless entry system. Use
of a 2-button portable remote control operates door locks within a
range of 13 ft. (4 m). Dome light flashes twice when doors are locked
and illuminates for 3 seconds when doors are unlocked. If, after 30
seconds, door(s) have not been opened when unlocked with keyless entry\
system, doors will relock.

functioning properly, replace unit with a known-good keyless
entry control unit and retest.
POWER DOOR LOCK CONTROL UNIT
Montero (W/O Remote Keyless Entry)
1) Remove power door lock control unit. See
COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Apply battery voltage to control unit terminal
No. 8 (Red/Yellow wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS.
2) Jumper control unit terminals No. 4 (Black wire), No. 5
(Blue/White wire), and No. 7 (Black/Yellow wire) to battery negative\
terminal. Connect an analog voltmeter between ground and terminal No.
3 (Blue/Red wire). Set voltmeter to DC volts.

6) Check if voltage is present between battery ground and
control unit terminals No. 2 (Black/Blue wire) and No. 6 (Black/Red
wire). Battery voltage should be present. If circuits do not test as
specified, replace door lock control unit.
BACK DOOR (LIFTGATE) LOCK ACTUATOR
Montero
Access door lock actuator. See DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR R & I under
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect back door actuator harness
connector. Remove actuator if needed. Connect positive lead of 12-volt
power source to actuator connector. Actuator should operate when
negative lead contacts actuator housing. Replace actuator as needed.

E - THEORY/OPERATION
1998 Mitsubishi Montero
1998 ENGINE PERFORMANCE
Mitsubishi - Theory & Operation
Diamante, Eclipse, Galant, Mirage, Montero, Montero Sport,
3000GT
INTRODUCTION
This article covers basic description and operation of engine
performance-related systems and components. Read this article before
diagnosing vehicles or systems with which you are not completely
familiar.
AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM
NON-TURBOCHARGED ENGINES
Mirage equipped with 1.5L engine uses a Manifold Absolute
Pressure (MAP) sensor instead of a Volume Airflow (VAF) sensor.
Filtered air is ducted to a plenum-mounted throttle body.
All other models use same basic air induction system using a
remote air filter (with VAF sensor) connected to a plenum-mounted
throttle body.
TURBOCHARGED ENGINES
In addition to basic air induction system, turbocharging
system components include turbocharger(s), charge air cooler(s), air\
by-pass valve(s), wastegate actuator(s), wastegate control solenoid
valve(s) and intake duct(s).
Wastegate Control Solenoid Valve(s)
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) energizes solenoid valve(s)\
,
controlling bleed-off rate of turbocharger pressure by wastegate
actuator(s).
COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS
Sequential Fuel Injection (SFI) is a computerized engine
control system, which controls fuel injection, ignition timing, idle
speed and emission control systems.
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
PCM, also known as Engine Control Module (ECM), receives and
processes signals from input devices. Operating conditions such as
cold starting, altitude, acceleration and deceleration affect input
device signals. Based on signals received, PCM sends signals to
various components, which control fuel injection, ignition timing,
idle speed and emission control systems. For PCM location, see
PCM LOCATION table.

remote vacuum regulator. The internal solenoid is normally open, which
causes the vacuum signal to be vented off to the atmosphere when EGR
is not controlled by the Electronic Control Module (ECM). The solenoid\
valve opens and closes the vacuum signal, controlling the amount of
vacuum applied to the diaphragm. See Fig. 12.
The electronic EGR valve contains a voltage regulator, which
converts ECM signal and regulates current to the solenoid. The ECM
controls EGR flow with a pulse width modulated signal based on
airflow, TPS and RPM. This system also contains a pintle position
sensor, which works similarly to a TPS sensor. As EGR flow is
increased, the sensor output increases.
Verify EGR valve is present and not modified or purposely
damaged. Ensure thermal vacuum switches, pressure transducers, speed
switches, etc., (if applicable) are not by-passed or modified. Ensure
electrical connector to EGR valve is not disconnected.

F - BASIC TESTING
1998 Mitsubishi Montero
1998 ENGINE PERFORMANCE
Mitsubishi - Basic Diagnostic Procedures
Diamante, Eclipse, Galant, Mirage, Montero, Montero Sport,
3000GT
INTRODUCTION
The following diagnostic steps will help prevent overlooking
a simple problem. This is also where to begin diagnosis for a no-start
condition. The first step in diagnosing any driveability problem is
verifying the customer's complaint with a test drive under the
conditions the problem reportedly occurred.
Before entering self-diagnostics, perform a careful and
complete visual inspection. Most engine control problems result from
mechanical breakdowns, poor electrical connections or
damaged/misrouted vacuum hoses. Before condemning the computerized
system, perform each test listed in this article.
NOTE: Perform all voltage tests with a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter
(DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless
stated otherwise in test procedure.
PRELIMINARY INSPECTION & ADJUSTMENTS
VISUAL INSPECTION
Visually inspect all electrical wiring, looking for chafed,
stretched, cut or pinched wiring. Ensure electrical connectors fit
tightly and are not corroded. Ensure vacuum hoses are properly routed
and are not pinched or cut. See M - VACUUM DIAGRAMS article to verify
routing and connections (if necessary). Inspect air induction system
for possible vacuum leaks.
MECHANICAL INSPECTION
Compression
Check engine mechanical condition with a compression gauge,
vacuum gauge, or an engine analyzer. See engine analyzer manual for
specific instructions.
WARNING: DO NOT use ignition switch during compression tests on fuel
injected vehicles. Use a remote starter to crank engine.
Fuel injectors on many models are triggered by ignition
switch during cranking mode, which can create a fire hazard
or contaminate the engine's oiling system.
Check engine compression with engine at normal operating
temperature, all spark plugs removed and throttle wide open. See
COMPRESSION SPECIFICATIONS table.

depending on model. Left/right switch directs current to desired
mirror. Horizontal/vertical switch directs current to electric motor
in mirror assembly, controlling up/down and left/right adjustment.
Heated mirrors are controlled by defogger relay.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
